We have some wildly vivid memories of playing a demo for the original Little Big Adventure included with a copy of Official PlayStation Magazine in the UK before getting our hands on the full game. It was such a uniquely weird title. You could switch your stances depending on the situation; so if you want to whallop a guard, you'd toggle the 'aggressive' stance and throw a few punches before hightailing it with the 'athletic' stance. So good.
Now, in Fall 2024, a full remake titled Little Big Adventure - Twinsen's Quest will be making its way to the Nintendo Switch from Microids and studio [2.21], boasting completely revamped visuals, a modernised control system, and numerous quality-of-life improvements.
The game aims to appeal to both newcomers and veteran players, retaining as much of original's charm as possible while (hopefully) losing some of its antiquated design choices. Original composer Phillipe Vachey is also back to revamp the in-game music.
Let's check out the official key features:
- Plunge into a unique universe enhanced by a brand new look.
- The Magic Ball brought into 2024, promising a range of challenges against the clones.
- Redesigned controls.
- Travel across the entire planet and discover reimagined islands in an open world.
- An action-adventure game mixed with exploration.
- A brand-new soundtrack by the original composer, Philippe Vachey
We'll have more information on Little Big Adventure - Twinsen's Quest, including its release date and price, in the coming weeks and months.
For now, let us know in the comments what you make of this latest Switch remake. Did you play the original?

Ah, this is such a wonderful and weird game. One of those rare curios that I actually played through twice back in the day. I recall some of the line readings being slightly odd - Twinsen! - but there is so much charm here.
"Now, what have you to bargain then?" I played this game only once on a friend's Playstation in 1994/5 where this came on a Demo disk. I don't know why, but that line from the merchant is forever seared in my brain. Like @Krull said. I think it is the delivery of line reading! Haha.
This game was a huge hit back in the day. Very strange title. I played through a fair bit of it.
Then the sequel tanked. Likely due to the ground adventure games lost to FPS titles.
If I had the time to play through this, I would buy.
Never heard of this before but I'm curious : )
One of the games of my youth. This remake is looking really cute and true to the original. Well done to the developers.
antiquated design choices.
They replaced the main character.
This game was miles ahead of it's time when it came out and very influential, but when I tried replaying it a few years ago it was a bit of a slog. That was mostly control issues though, so this could be great
Interesting, will consider giving it a try at some point now that it's coming to Switch thanks to this remake!
I hope this would lead to a remake of the second game which is way better IMO due to the usage of 3D outdoor environments and more variety of locations. The first game is decent but it has some odd control issues like the stance system and running into objects would drain your health.
Absolutely loved this game, hopefully the remake moves away from tank controls
Never even heard of this one. Must have been living under a rock.
I had totally forgotten about this game! Think I must've played the demo on PC before it came out, don't think I ever purchased the full game however even though I remember being quite keen to play it
Great game, but the sequel is the real masterpiece. To this day one of my favorite games of all time, and I´ve played through it 10+ times. A bit sad that they didn´t do both of them in one package, I guess compared to most games today they are both a bit on the shorter side so it would sort of make sense.
But I will of course support this game if it means there will be a chance for them to make the sequel too.
whatwhatWHAAAT!?
These are some of my favorite games, and I'd given up on thinking EA would allow the franchise to be picked back up!
Very cool to hear that Philippe is back to update the already amazing soundtrack, though I wonder where and if the original writer/designer/programmer Frederick Reynal is to be found in this project.
@kfflscnt
Replaced him?
How to you mean?
@Krull
The Frenglish is noticable in the first game.
Let's see if dialogue lines are rewritten / rerecorded for this release.
I remember this one, good to have more games from French studios remastered. Beyond Good and Evil being another example. Maybe a Syberia remaster is in the pipeline?
There's something appealing about French games, that's what I'm trying to say.
what? This is crazy. I am aging myself but I loved this game back in the day. Hopefully they remake the second one. I am getting this for sure.
I saw PS5 version in physical from the trailer and I'm happy. 🙂
the original gives me the creeps in the best way!
I'd love if they let us have the og soundtrack, too, but at least they knew well enough to get the original composer back for the remake 👍
one question I have, is if they leave the "tank controls*," people will complain, but if they change them, will it make the game too easy?
really looking forward to playing this with my wife. ✌️
*I can't stand this term but I'm using it here for clarity. "avatar-relative controls?" idk what to call it. but theres a distinctive way that tanks control that isnt this so it bugs me. for example, Katamari Damacy has actual "tank controls," in my opinion.
I played the PC version of this back in the day. I have been following the remasters of 1&2 since they were announced a few years ago, at the same time that a reboot was announced (which looked awful, went nowhere, and was cancelled before or even began).
The lack of focus and tumultuous journey so far on these games leaves me uncertain what is or isn't being released, and in what form. Here's the blog post where they acknowledge the problem and try to explain what they're making: https://www.littlebigadventure.com/en/reboot-remaster-or-remake-the-answer/
Consider me cautiously interested.

@Qwiff One thing I remember about the sequel is that there was a cheat whereby if you made a crotch-thrusting gesture at the rear end of a cow then it would drop endless extra lives.
This is what happens when you let the French sense of humour creep into computer games.
I would never have thought this would be chosen for a remake. I enjoyed the 2nd one as a kid, but tried to play the first one as an adult and found the controls frustrating (and I’m not talking about the tank controls). So I’m definitely interested in this!
I remember LBA. If I am not mistaken I had played a demo of it, as kid when we had CDs from computer magazines. I liked it but I hadn't the chance to play the full version. From what I am reading from the previous users, it must be a wonderful game!
I have vague recollections of greatly desiring to play this game, but having trouble forcing my PC to run it without crashing.
*watching closely
Ah I thought this was twinsen’s odyssey but apparently that’s the sequel. That game is amazing and played it a lot as a kid. Will definitely check this one out and hopefully they remake the sequel
@Kruegerino I might be wrong, but I think that was discussed at one point, but was considered too big of a project for them. I have been subscribed to their newsletters and in the Discord channel since the team announced a few years back their intentions to revive the series. Unfortunately it has been a rocky road and they have struggled to attract a suitable publisher to come on board. They have had to change the project a few times. There was talk originally of LBA3, which sadly was scrapped in favour of a reboot, which then got cancelled, so they continued with plans for a remaster of both games. It seems like they finally have a publisher on board and we are getting a remake of the first game. I just hope it's successful enough for at least a LBA2 remake, if not LBA3 to finally happen.
@Reprise
Ah, thanks for the answer. I vaguely remember the different announcements during the years, but have kind of stopped hoping. From at least 97-07 I just wanted LBA3, more than any other game. Then just completely gave up hope.
But seeing this trailer, even if it´s "just the first game" (which to me is far from being as good as the second game, even if it certainly is fine), is kind of surreal. Really hope it turns out great and that it sells well enough to warrant them making the second game and maybe finally that third one as well...
Loved this game on the Playstation, and just read a massive write up about it in Retro Gamer this month.
Also as its Microids, therefore physical incoming, oh look at the end of the trailer, there it is YEY!!!
@Bunkerneath I just read that feature in Retro Gamer last night. Had never heard of it before, so seeing it in the news was quite a shock.
I remember playing the sequel on the family pc back in the day, but not the original. It was quite good.
For a second there I thought we would be getting a SackBoy game on Switch. Oh well, this is a fine game too even though I had only ever heard myths about it. Would definitely check it out soon.
I hope it's released for more platforms. I remember that @NEStalgia mentioned this project years ago and I'm happy to see that it's nearly finished now.
What a great surprise! Always wanted to play it, saved for it and then my pc wouldn’t run the game So I’m glad I’ll finally be able to catch up
@Kruegerino I was much the same. To be honest, I was incredibly disappointed when they announced that they were abandoning their plans for LBA3 in favour of a reboot, particularly since their reasoning was that they felt LBA3 would only appeal to a niche audience and that they would struggle to attract a wider modern audience. I felt they were a bit naive. They might pick up the odd impulse buyer or curious person with a reboot (or indeed this remake), but let's face it, 99% of people buying this will be fans of the original game. And then if it flops or "fails to meet expectations", where will that leave LBA3?
Feel like the change in graphics style makes the game look worse. It used to have really high res (for the time) pixel art isometric levels, and these flat-shaded 3D models just look simpler and change it to be very cartoony...guess we'll see how it progresses.
Hoooo boy this is a nice surprise!
Aren't Microids known for absolutely ruining games? I hope the other studio involved can stop them from doing the same with this one.
Wow, one of the best games from my teen year's that I completely forgot about, until reading this! I can't remember if it was LBA 1 or 2 that I loved so much though 🤔
