Happy Pride, everyone! We're updating and republishing this list of some of Switch's best and most inclusive games in celebration of Pride month. Enjoy!
The games industry has not always been good at portraying LGBTQ+ relationships and identities, but thanks to the efforts of small studios, indie developers, and LGBTQ+ creators, that's beginning to change. Not only do we have enough games with strong LGBTQ+ themes on the Nintendo Switch that we can actually make a list, but all of these games are exceptionally good. We're spoiled for choice!
But what exactly constitutes an "LGBTQ+ game", anyway? Beyond games that simply have some representation, we're talking about games that are proudly representative — games that celebrate queer characters and wear their queerness on their sleeve.
For example, we're not counting games like Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, which features the wonderful Vivian, or Overwatch, which has LGBTQ+ representation in characters like Tracer and Soldier 76 but who were both confirmed to be gay in material outside of the game.
Before we begin, please be aware that, for many of these games, their LGBTQ+ content is a plot point, and so there are a lot of spoilers in here. Happy spoilers, but spoilers nonetheless!
Night In The Woods (Switch eShop)
Although Night in the Woods' plot is predominantly about the mysterious goings-on in Possum Springs, and protagonist Mae Borowski's own personal demons, the actual day-to-day of the game involves Mae and her friends being gay and doing crimes. No, literally — that's their catchphrase: "Be gay, do crimes". With a portrayal of a loving gay relationship between Gregg and Angus, plus Mae's own pansexuality, Night in the Woods paints a picture of a group of friends who aren't afraid to be their most authentic selves.
Ikenfell (Switch eShop)
Imagine a game like Harry Potter, but set in a world that's both welcoming and proud of its trans, pansexual, non-binary, gay and queer characters, and you've got Ikenfell, a Chrono Trigger-style RPG about saving the world from magic gone wrong.
The teens at Ikenfell's wizarding school range from "discovering their sexuality" to being out-and-out flirts, which is a refreshing take on the "all teens are nervous about kissing" trope. It's also one of the only games we've ever played to feature neo-pronouns, with one of the teachers using ze/zir.
Undertale (Switch eShop)
Undertale's most overt LGBTQ+ reference is the "best ending", which — spoilers — involves the absolutely WONDERFUL lesbian relationship between Alphys and Undyne, which you can easily miss unless you're doing a pacifist run.
Various other low-key queer representations abound, from Mettatron's gender presentation to the main character's use of they/them pronouns.
Celeste (Switch eShop)
Celeste is a brilliant, punishingly-hard platformer by many of the folks who worked on Towerfall. Its story is mostly concerned with protagonist Madeline's mental health struggles as she attempts to climb a mountain, despite her self-doubt.
Not only does the team that worked on it represent many of the letters in the LGBTQ+ acronym, but Maddy Thorson — the game's director and designer, who is non-binary — confirmed that Madeline herself is trans. In fact, it was the making of Celeste that helped Maddy come to terms with their own gender feelings!

Stardew Valley (Switch eShop)
The Story of Seasons games and Harvest Moon games have historically been more than a little bad at representing same-sex relationships. Many of them will let you have same-sex marriages, but the fact that these are known as "best friend ceremonies" in Japan gives you an idea of just how progressive this really is.
Stardew Valley, a game heavily inspired by Harvest Moons of the past, is less shy about its LGBTQ+ representation.
Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town (Switch)
The Story of Seasons series has not always been great at same-sex relationships — but the Friends of Mineral Town remake on Switch is a step in the right direction that bins the 'Best Friends' label for same-sex partners. Not only is it a solid update of one of the best games in the series, but it also offers a veritable cornucopia of potential marriage candidates to woo, including the Harvest Goddess herself. Brandon and Jennifer are two new romanceable characters added to the list for the remake, as well!
Gone Home (Switch eShop)
Gone Home is one of the first narrative games that is told almost entirely by found objects, as Katie Greenbriar returns home to her family's empty house. By walking around and finding various diary entries, cassette tapes, and pieces of paper, Katie can put together what happened to her sister, Sam.
While we never get more information than what the game tells us in snippets of text, and Sam's story is never expanded upon, Gone Home is a delicately told, surprisingly heartwarming tale despite seeming, at first, like a horror game.
A Normal Lost Phone (Switch eShop)
What would you do if you found a locked phone belonging to a stranger? If the answer is "I'd go through all the texts and emails, but I'd feel REALLY bad about it," then perhaps you can indulge your curiosity harmlessly with A Normal Lost Phone.
You find the phone of Sam, a teenager whose life you slowly unwrap as you go through their correspondence with friends and family. Eventually, it will become clear why Sam has abandoned the phone: to start a new life away from their homophobic and transphobic family, and live authentically.
The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition (Switch eShop)
The House in Fata Morgana begins in an abandoned house, as you — an amnesiac mystery person — explore the memories of the mansion. Travelling through time, you watch stories of abuse, grief, heartbreak, murder, and at the centre of it all, a witch's curse — but eventually you'll come to the truth of the whole thing. Fata Morgana is a tragic story of rejection, othering, and discovering one's true identity, even if it means losing everything else.
Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator (Switch eShop)
Dream Daddy is, on the surface, a fluffy, heartwarming tale of dads dating dads in a dad-friendly utopian suburb. Dig a little deeper, though, and you'll find themes of what it means to be a gay dad, a black dad, a trans dad, a plus-size dad, a closeted dad, and a self-loathing dad.
Body types, race, diversity, and the struggles of raising young women are all intertwined with the Dream Daddy's marshmallowy dating-game exterior, and that depth is what skyrocketed this short narrative-focused experience into massive popularity.
If Found... (Switch eShop)
If Found... is a visual novel centred on the life of Kasia, a transgender woman, as she writes in her diary about her experiences in early '90s Ireland. You can only interact with the game through erasing Kasio's words, discovering her story of trying to fit in by not fitting in as you delete it from the world.
With a punky, hand-drawn zine-like art style, If Found... is all about how sometimes building new bridges means burning the old ones down.

Still no Birdo the OG trans gaming character!
Thought @kategray was back there for a second.😃
Commend you guys on leaving the comments open.🌈👍
Even as someone falling under 2 umbrellas of the LGBTQ+, I never understood the focus of some (some doesn’t mean all) people on LGBTQ+ friendly content.
Yes I avoid places that are not friendly, but I don’t require media, games or even cafes to have “that label”, but I know some people in the community that only care about stuff if they have a label.
They would never play The Witcher 3 or Persona because those lack one in their opinion.
My small rant aside, what I do find interesting about these list is that 9 out of 10 times they contain games that have such label, while I didn’t even know they had one.
Maybe because I care more about a game being good, no matter the labels.
(I just hope nobody does understand this comment wrong, a lot of people have a wrong image of the LGBTQ+ community because stories like this one, often get removed by the same community)
I am not against these lists or labels, it’s just that some people go a bit too far with them (=labels).

There's gonna be a lot of people being jerks here in the comments. So to whoever's reading this and needs it: Happy pride month. Glad you're here with us, everyone.
@Mauzuri I agree. Celeste is absolutely brilliant!
I've been chipping away at Murder by Numbers myself for the past few months (very close to finishing it!) and I can absolutely confirm that it's LGBTQ+ representation definitely feels like it came from a very personal place with how it's handled (K.C my beloved).
I always do like a good LGBTQ+ romance story in media (as if my PFP didn't give that away immediately XD) so I'll definitely be checking out a bunch of the ones listed here (namely Celeste, If Found and VA-11 HA11-A) whenever possible. Happy Pride Month everyone! 😊🏳🌈

Happy Pride, and remember that it’s a protest first and foremost, not a celebration. Make sure to join your local march!

Celest and harvest moon is amazing! They are both on par with triple A games! And I haven’t even compleated them! I just come back to harvest moon once in a wile, and Celeste gameplay is just fantastic, and the soundtrack, ooooooh, the soundtrack! Don’t get me started!
Also the amount of deleted comments in such a short time, is saddening.
I'm a little surprised that Unpacking didn't get a mention here considering it actually won awards for how it portrayed a LGBTQ+ relationship in a very subtle and beautiful way.
My choices for LGBT games:
SoS Friends of Mineral Town
SoS Pioneers of Olive Town
The Sims games
Wow these games are gay (very cool)

Counting the deleted comments under an article isn't the most exciting Friday evening I've ever had, but it'll do for my current situation.
Not really sure what my sexuality is. I like both but never did anything with a girl, but I (F) have a 'type' in women, I look at them in the street more than I do men overall and I'm really attracted to anime girls and not so much guys, but then most of my celebrity crushes have all been males other than Hayley Williams of Paramore. Ultimately it doesn't really matter, it doesn't define me and I've been with my male partner for 11 years and want to spend the rest of my life with him.
Anywayyy...
Really appreciate the Story of Seasons games being LGBT-friendly, it sucked being forced to play as a boy to date a girl, can't wait to play as a girl in AWL and go for Nami all over again I never got Another Wonderful life so I never got the chance before.
@RetroGames Our governments are not introducing legislation to remove access to healthcare based on hair color, legally bar the mere acknowledgement of the existence of people with different hair in K-12 classrooms, prevent them from adopting children, threatening their marriage status, categorizing their hair color as a threat to children, or terrorizing them to the point they feel compelled to uproot their lives and move.
Equity is not a contest. Another group’s journey and the challenges they face in a volatile political space isn’t the type of attention anyone wants. Sure, people can be rude about hair color. Until your government threatens you for an immutable trait, just be glad you don’t need a “pride” or “history” day, month, etc.
Anyway, yay for queer video games
Also, could be considered a bit of a cheat depending on how you look at it but the main campaign of Shovel Knight does have the body swap mode where you can change the body types and pronouns of most of the major characters.

Want to know a fun fact? LGBTQ+ people in concentration camps were marked with a pink triangle. After the Allies liberated these camps towards the very end of the war, you know what happened to people marked with a pink triangle? They were re-imprisoned. Left to rot in the newly formed Allied-backed state’s prisons. It’s easy to moan about Pride if you don’t actively see persecution of these people on a daily basis but it’s baked into the fabric of every single country on the planet, even the ones that appear to be supportive. Empathy doesn’t cost you a thing.
Why do people always pick the day of the parade to rain.
Isn’t it hypocritical to celebrate a month for being outspoken and true to oneself but deleting other voices you don’t agree with? Wasn’t that what has/was happening to the LGBTQ community for years? If you feel the comments are bigoted, why not leave them and let everyone see? Silencing others you dislike and disagree with is never a good thing. Last time visiting this site. ✌🏻
This list is banned in much of the southern U.S. 🙄
Thanks for posting, N.L! I’m trans and have enjoyed many of these games.
The representation is greatly appreciated this year, especially, when so many conservative folks seem hell bent on erasing us.

@nessisonett And gingers used to get literally burned at the stake and accused of being witches. This is a historical fact.
DISCLAIMER: I have nothing against people in the LGBTQ+ community*. Naver had and never will.
WARNING: You might find this comment offensive, so stop reading now.
DISCLAIMER: This comment is purely my opinion. Which isn't going to change, ever.
Start of opinion
A lot of companies in the western world take this "pride" month to make a token out of everyone in this* community. Without actually meaning any of it. Like companies changing their social media avatars to include the pride-flag. But only in western countries.
They don't openly support the community in countries that either have religious or legal standings against the community. Meaning they don't support the community, but they actually only want to gain woke points from the community that they say they support. (Which is gaslighting)
My problem here is that they force it upon the rest of the people in the countries that already have decent legislation to support people from this community. Which basically removes a lot of representation of the larger group that doesn't fit within this community. (or other 'woke' communities) This is something you see a lot of in modern movies and games. For example removing the "male and female" options from character creators. Or forcing "they/them" on all player characters in game - without giving an option. Which is not inclusive at all, it's purely an exclusivity for a very loud (and proud) minority. Some games do this better than others, for example "Life is Strange: True Colors" gives you an option. Which, honestly, every game - where it fits the gameplay - should have.
Which to me is what it should be like. Represent everyone. Not just people in a community. Or a few people from a community. Also don't blame others for your problems. Fix them and learn to get along.
End of opinion
If you actually feel offended by this comment, again, this comment is not about you.
Eh. Nothing against LGBTQ+ folks but I always think it's silly to wear one's sexuality on their sleeve. It's just something you are, and not something really to be "proud" of, in my eyes. I certainly don't play games just because they happen to have an LGBTQ+ theming or whatever.
That said, the celebrations can be nice to see, but only because it brings people together and the colors are nice and all that. But I don't really care much if it's too celebrate that whole shebang.
Also Celeste is still one of my top favorite games of all time and I'm glad that they're not afraid to make the main character trans. Amazing game that I can never give enough praise to!
So glad to see Fata Morgana on this list! That game’s queer character was amazingly written and left quite an impact on me. Similarly, I’d love to see Umineko in a list like this someday if the Switch port ever comes to the west.
Happy pride everyone! 🏳️🌈

@RetroGames In your specific case, you were transparently sea-lioning. By all means, if you really care so much about Ginger representation, advocate for it!
But do so in good faith, rather than as a foil to LGBTQ+ celebration/acknowledgement.
@nessisonett It's definitely also become a celebration, but hell yeah
Removed - flaming/arguing
I have always felt many video games and specifically developers were careful to make characters gender ambiguous in order to appeal to more players. There are also games specifically targeted towards masculine and feminine inclined players. If we are to all get along why not just accept each other regardless and not try to beat each other up with our choices.
I hate bringing attention to the discourse, but my god, can we get one article without some gamers (and Nintendo fans, no less) embarrassing us??
Reactionaries are so exhausting...
"A Normal Lost Phone" is a great piece of storytelling.
@RetroGames There’s no talking to that fella, to be honest. He’s best ignored.
@RetroGames
I was not aware of the prevalence of this. My son has/had red hair but it is more of a muted tone. He did face bullying as a child but we taught him to look beyond physical features and respect a persons character. He is a very well adjusted person now and we were proud of him then and even more so now. I am sorry if you suffered because of this.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@RetroGames Yeah, I get what you mean. It’s a shame a few others don’t also see it that way.
Celeste has nothing to do with LGBTQ and Story of Seasons just allows romancing with everyone
@RetroGames can you cut it out with this disingenuous crap? nobody is burning gingers at the stake (at least not any time recently enough for it to be an active concern), just as nobody's passing laws about whether gingers can play sports or get married. I'm sorry you got recast in a few movies (which happens to all sorts of characters by the way, absolutely not just redheads), but my god, it's nowhere near the plight queer folks are actively facing.
@ComfyAko the creators of Celeste would very much disagree with you. https://maddythorson.medium.com/is-madeline-canonically-trans-4277ece02e40
@JonLeeSTD Hey there
Just to clarify from a moderation side of things
We have a set of Community Rules which apply to all articles & users who use our sites
If a comment goes against them it will be removed, this article included
https://www.nintendolife.com/rules
@DTFaux
I find your comment to be triggering. Why say anything if it is not constructive?
@ComfyAko Celeste definitely counts, the main character is trans and the creator even said it help them come to terms with there feelings, plus the whole game literally revolves around it.
@ComfyAko Madeline is literally trans. The entire point of the game is her struggle with herself and it contextualises the Badeline plot.
where is gay bowser >
On a less frivolous note, happy pride month guys! And remember that before you challenge someone's opinions, please put yourselves in their shoes in a moment to try to understand their perspective.
@JonLeeSTD I agree
As someone who is lebian and transgender I learned two things from being part of the community (and before someone comments, this is my experience in my country, be happy if you only know nice people)
ALSO the following is about the T part of the community here, not the rest of it (those are chill)
One is that if someone really want to hurt you bulls-eye, the community know better where to hit than regular people because they know where it hurts.
Second thing and that is the main reason of this comment, at least the community in my country online and offline has "unwritten rules" to how you should act as a transgender or part of the community.
I mean I don't go to any prides, I don't like busy places like that and I don't celebrate that day, I do respect others doing it though.
But saying that out loud in the community is a no go, they don't accept that here, and you get the people "higher up on the ladder" of the community against you if you do.
That does hurt and annoy me the most, here they want to take but not give, and you must act "like a transgender" if you are one.
Well SORRY that I have the luxury of the world not seeing me as one, SORRY because I know some people that went through hell because of their looks.
But should I be punished for it? well here some think you should.
Anyhow I do have some friends from around the world and it seems this is a issue here, in other countries the LGBTQ+ community, especially the T part is way more friendly.
Also to people that feel offended, please don't and understand that this must be said, a lot of people don't know how it is to be part of it. And a lot of them think all communities of the big umbrella are equal, THEY ARE NOT.

@Chaotic_Neutral Trans people fought for your rights! Stonewall was a riot led by black trans folks. The communities are inherently linked.
@Rayquaza2510
I appreciate your comments as they feel sincere and from your heart. While we may not see things the same I hope that things get better for you and you have people that love you and support you because that is really what life is about.
Removed - inappropriate
@Zidentia thank you
Luckily I have people around me that love and accept me for who I am.
But it does hurt that the one place you should feel safe at, is the one you probably should stay away from.
And 15 years later that still didn't change much, it got worse.
Enough said, don't want to go too much off topic so for others reading this.
Never lose hope, you are who you are and never give up being yourself.
@Chaotic_Neutral lol. this whole thing is a dumpster fire, and the whole movement just a product of late corporate globalist ideology. But i mean, people need this to think they are 'winning' the 'culture war' or whatever. But yeah, some people now want to separate the T from the LGB, even though it was the LGB that created it. Open pandoras box and guess what happens.
@Chaotic_Neutral aside from your comment
It is true that in the LGBTQ+ community (my personal experiences ignored) people do sometimes clash with each other, but every individual is different.
That's all I have to say.
@Zidentia Calling out reactionaries and pointing out how they're arguing in bad faith is about as constructive as it gets; it's crucial for internet literacy, and ideally helps keep folks from making bigger fools of themselves than they already are.
For example: Reactionaries love to lob around familiar words with next to no sincerity, and you saying I "triggered" you without getting into what exactly bothered you makes it pretty clear you're not talking in good faith.
I don’t understand why the LGBTQ+ group gets so much coverage these days when other groups aren’t “allowed” to. When is Nintendo Life going to publish a list recognizing all the bigots and awful people in video games? We need to represent all communities, dang it!
Terrible ideas aside, Fata Morgana and Hades are my top picks from this list. Happy Pride Month!
@Rayquaza2510 great comment and point of view.
@Chaotic_Neutral Sorry but again I just want to clarify here, your comment was removed as it contained a highly inappropriate line containing adult themes
I had forgotten about Gone home. What a great game!!
Happy pride month. I hope we see a peaceful acceptance of one another in the immediate future rather than this endless hatred and violence.
✌️ ✌️ ❤️❤️
Samurai maiden is a great yuri game
I just don't particularly like it that sex is a subject, full stop. I can't help but feel that these articles and lots of 'things' do that too much , and I would much prefer than in general we view people for who they are and not what they are.
@Tobiaku Akai Ito & Aoi Shiro too (remaster came out a week ago on the Switch and PC)
But even on it's own it has a solid story for a VN from that time, that's the main reason I got into it few years ago when the fan patch came out for the latter one (never finished the game though)
(I didn't even know about the whole Yuri concept back then, as I just got into VN's, also I never cared but that aside)

@DreamlandGem fair enough and I didn't mean any offense.
@jump I hope you are being sarcastic because Birdo being trans is just fan fiction.
What a great list of games! I can definitely recommend VA-11 HALL-A and Murder By Numbers. They're both brilliant!! And whilst I've only played a bit of Haven so far I'm really digging it, and the soundtrack is god-tier! I've still to play Celeste, Spiritfarer, and Hades, but I'm getting to them.
@Chaotic_Neutral You didn't mean offense by delegitimizing trans identities?
I'd probably give a nod to the AI: The Somnium Files games for this. Both games have multiple LGBTQ characters and both games have Mizuki give impassioned speeches in defense of the community, with the one in the second game very obviously being directed at people who complained about the one in the first.
To everyone wondering why pride exists and why we're so loud about it - silence is literally the first step to erasure. There's nothing that would make homophobes happier than us being quiet and keeping it to ourselves, because that's how they overtake us and begin to outlaw our existence. We have to make ourselves known if we want to survive. If nobody's speaking up for us, how do we earn our rights? Because that doesn't just happen naturally.

@Bret She's not trans in the game and believe me I do not skip cutscenes.
@Snatcher again, I have played it and it's absolutely not about it.
@nessisonett and as a hat trick - no. Badeline plot and Celeste had nothing to do with trans
@Cashews i don't want to live in a world where every decision depends on whether someone's "feelings could be hurt." that's not an argument.
I've said it before, but I'm a Christian with a more "traditional" view on things like marriage and gender. I feel I would be doing the LGBT+ community a great disservice by not communicating with then what I earnestly believe is right and wrong. Ultimately, the choice to believe must be left to each individual, but I cannot in clean conscience be an enabler to a lifestyle that--in my world view--does not lead to salvation.
With that said, I want to make one thing explicitly clear: Jesus commands us to love our neighbors. Those who would harass you with slurs and insults or threaten you with bodily harm do not embody the teachings of Christ. You deserve to be loved. You're life is valuable; please never take it. The world needs your unique talents. I am no better than you--I struggle with plenty of my own imperfections. Whether you are gay or trans, I would be honored to serve you at my dinner table and have an earnest conversation with you.
I do not believe most trans people are groomers. I am disgusted whenever a gay bar or night club is the victim of a violent mass shooting. However, I hope we can acknowledge the double-standard. Do not generalize all religious folks like myself as groomers either, and I hope we can all agree the lives of Christian children who were lost at the hands of a trans school shooter was sickening.
Your feelings are valid, but so are mine. We are not so different. I spent years concealing my faith--"closeting" it, so to speak. I was afraid of bullying and harassment. I didn't want to be doxxed and harassed and canceled and threatened with violence. Look at what happened to the creator of FNAF. None of us should have to hide what is important to us. My religion is as much a part of my identity as your sexuality is to you. I will no longer keep it to myself, just as I don't expect you to keep yours in the bedroom.
We need to start being real with each other and talk these things out. As I said, we are not so different. I used to be in a very dark place and struggled with thoughts of self-harm. Lots of popular media nowadays portrays adherents of Abrahamic religions as the bad guys; we are all bigoted, homophobic, cultists, hypocritical, sexist, racist, the byproduct of European colonialism, etc. It's propaganda, and it leads to a lot of negative internalized feelings and depression.
Christians may not be oppressed under law in the Western world at present, but power dynamics constantly shift. There are many countries around the world where people cannot freely practice their religion without retaliation. I acknowledge gay people--as well as ethnic minorities--were treated abysmally throughout American history. But from my perspective as a straight, white, religious male, I've witnessed a lot of animosity swinging from the other direction nowadays. Let us strive for true equality and inclusion. I'll lift you up if you will offer me the same courtesy.
The division has to stop.
We need to quit accusing each other of having a persecution complex or victim mentality. I've experienced the looming fear of a genocide against people like me, just as you have. We MUST stand together as one people and work toward the common good. We must all acknowledge prejudice and discrimination when we see it--whether the victim is straight and white, or a gay person of color. All groups are capable of hatred. We mustn't forget that.
Much love. God bless. ❤️
@iDidSomething Because only a handful of games actually feature LGBTQ+ characters, so if somebody wants to see themselves represented in a game, this is a convenient and well-researched list to assist them in that effort. Just because it provides no value to you doesn't mean it's not valuable.
@Slowdive yes, and dont worry, you have a whole corporate and instututional machine to amplify and finance your narratives. being vocal isnt some brave, defiant act lol, it is literally the machine operating
@Bret You cannot choose your sexuality. It is just as nonsensical to be proud of your sexuality as it is to be proud of your nationality. I don't like the framing.
@nessisonett
Source? (Concentration camps)
@RedXIII Then the Lists name is wrong.
@The-Chosen-one Relativizing National Socialism is repulsive.
Happy gaming
@iDidSomething I didn't make an argument. I said the site is being dumb. They know what they are doing. Complicit.
I try to go through life not hurting other people's feelings. I dont want to change social structures but I'm not actively going out of my way to hurt someone. Like this topic is doing right now at this very second. Creating ill-will between fellow human beings.
@Cashews This topic does nothing to create ill will. It's just a list of games that feature queer characters. No different from a list of games that feature a minority in a lead role, or a list of games that fall into a certain genre. The ill will comes from people who have something against queer folks.
@DTFaux Agreed. My Facebook is locked down to only people I care to interact with and I’ve left all other social media. Sadly, Hookshot Media comment sections are essentially the only place on the Internet that exposes me to hate speech and these juvenile, half-baked, bad faith arguments. That being said, props to the folks at Nintendo Life, Pure Xbox, and Push Square. They do their best.
@Bret sigh...christ almighty.
do you think maybe I wasn't talking about the article? BUT THE COMMENTS THAT WERE SURE TO FOLLOW.
My point was to maybe not allow comments at all. Which are creating ill-will. Obviously. I thought obviously.
Man, this thread. Jeez. Gotta be careful with words.
Ok, so I’ll be honest with my opinions on Celeste’s inclusion. I do think Celeste counts for multiple reasons, but the trans element, not so much. This was added retroactively due to said creator realising their own gender identity when the DLC was finalised (as stated in one of the links in a post above).
Madeline then got placed into in an odd position due to their character’s retcon over their sexuality (which I remember causing a stir for a lot of players at the time).
My personal read on Madeline was that she was not trans (the element of sexuality never once occurred to me at all during gameplay). To me her journey was overcoming her self doubts as an individual with her own demons and anxieties, it was a broad scope that encompassed what a lot of people experience these days.
So to be honest, the change to her sexuality didn’t sit particularly well with me at first when it was announced, but not for anti-trans reasons.
When I played Celeste I identified with her struggles in my own personal way (after all, the game expects the player to reflect on their sense of self through the character avatar) and since I had my own anxieties at that specific time of playing Celeste, this game was incredibly lethargic to experience, battle through and win with her.
So while I understand it’s meaningful for Madeline’s creator and the community, suddenly changing this aspect of her post game release felt like this limiter/barrier was then placed around a character I had identified and bonded with.
However, although I do continue to feel it was better when their sexuality was left open to interpretation… on reflection it does make sense and is actually a sweet change that contextualises their story in a wholesome way. And honestly, it hurts nobody or their experience with the games actual journey up that goddamn mountain.
@Cashews I know what you're trying to say. But what I'm saying is the comments would have been perfectly civil if no bigots decided to post their little bigoted thoughts. No ill will was created here, it already existed.
@Bret this is true. Gamers especially love to lob grenades at each other they always have.
anyway, take it easy and keep being who you are friend.
@Yosher A quick explanation about the "pride" thing: it's not about being proud of your sexuality, it's about being proud of yourself, regardless of your sexuality, and the point is that many people are being taught from early age by people around them and by society to be ashamed of themselves. The "pride" thing is just that: you, too, can feel pride, just like everybody else.
I'm curious to know what was added to this list since last year? I guess I can look at the release dates but were other games added that were missed previously?
Night in the Woods is still on my list and I keep forgetting about it. I know I've read this article and I think last year I said I'll move it up in the queue since it was included in this list, but then other things happened. So many things. And then TotK and it was all over.
Final note: comment sections like these are great reminder why we still need pride, why it's called pride, why it's a protest and why the first pride was a riot.
Another example that comes to mind is Fire Emblem Three Houses considering that both Byleths have a few same-sex S-support options (though admittedly Bylass was favored here with 5 options compared to Bylad's 3).
@Strumpan Yeah. That makes sense. Never really think about it that way when this kind of thing comes up.
@The-Chosen-one Basically any Holocaust museum worth their salt? With specifics to the ongoing persecution of gay people after the war had ended, Paragraph 175 is a documentary that touches on those people. That law was never repealed after the war and so the ones that didn’t make it out the camps weren’t even included as victims. It took until 1994 for that article which was introduced by the Nazi Party to be repealed. Rudolf Klimmer tried to fight for the rights of those with pink triangles to be recognised but was shut down in the 50s, he didn’t live to see them given reparations much much later on in 2017.

I wonder why all the people who say stuff like "we don't need this list, we should only care if a game is good or not" don't also make a fuss over every single game list. I strangely don't see them complaining in the "best games with cats" or "best pixel art games" articles, for some reason. (I know why.)
On a more positive note, this list is great, I'm definitely checking out some of these. Let's hope it keeps growing.
Happy Pride!
I really enjoyed Haven after the couples update and even without it Yu has two mothers. The ending was a bit of a downer (I am talking the good ending) though. I enjoyed that the dialogue wasn’t just “change the pronouns” (because if that stopped sexism and hatred of homosexuals then the world would have an easy/nonsensical fix) which I am not a fan of but had each character actually have script changes that reacts as their biological sex. I’m also a fan of the SoS remake games as they finally open up the social aspects of those games for me. I know so many people would rather homosexuals vanish from sight or be forced to be heterosexual and I am grateful to any game that instead simply acknowledges that we exist and gives us an option to game on equal terms. Especially games/stories where homosexual characters fully exist rather than being flavor text.
Storme started it.

@RetroGames
I speak as a fellow ginger when I say to you: stop embarrassing us.
@Slowdive nah, its cool you have billions pouring in from corporations, and a corporate media and whole institutional framework to drive and spread your narratives/ideology. Just dont pretend that 'speaking out' is some kind of revolutionary defiant act against the system or something. you literally are supported and carried by 'the system'.
A lot has happened since last pride month.
For starters, I came out.
But anyways, Happy Pride Month everyone.
Let’s hope the comments aren’t too bad.
-octokid the bisexual demigirl
Cringe over the idea of playing a game as a same couple experience after the update. Also… don’t repress my sexuality & make money out of it afterwards. ✊✊✊🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
Does Kate get paid for this article even though she has left?
@octokid HELL YEAH, CONGRATS
Lovely background story to „Celeste“.
Best wishes to Maddy and the team, even if I didn’t enjoy the game as much as the critics did.
It’s almost as if being LGBT myself takes a backseat, when it comes to gameplay. Shocking if you’re a bigot, I know
@DTFaux the reply your non constructive comments triggered me is clear in my opinion. What is not clear is why you have decided to personally attack me by calling me names and others as well. People are entitled to their opinions regardless of how they line up with yours. Trying to silence people on the internet because you feel you have the only correct opinion is not constructive and is also destructive in today’s societal climate. Perhaps in the future try to be empathetic towards others outlooks and opinions and contribute positively instead of negatively.
I'm just glad they don't point anything out in Celeste so I can still enjoy it without the Rowling style "oh by the way it was actually progressive the whole time I just didn't want to lose money by actually being inclusive but it totally still counts right??" drivel.
@Slowdive i think you will find it is your world that has peaked, and is dying. a slow death spiral of the globalist-progressivisit paradigm. Too many people are waking up, and it wont go so easy . But sure, if it makes you feel better about being 'on the right side of history' and all that kind of moralistic head up high kind of stuff, go for it. But i would like to have this convo 10 years down the line and we will see who won out.
Shovel Knight is missing.
I really don’t understand why so many people feel the need to come to this comment section and express opinions that have little to do with the actual games in the list. If it upsets you then just don’t click on the article, NL is a free service, they don’t owe you anything and you always have the choice of not visiting the website if you find its contents unpleasant. No need to start arguments that go way beyond games.
@smithyo Relax. There’s no agenda/narrative/conspiracy. We’re just as much a part of nature as you are, no better or worse.
Might wanna start judging people by their character and actions, rather than skin pigments or sexual orientation.
I wonder why you’re so driven and upset about this topic though. Who hurt you?
@Gryzor my whole point, my singular point, was about LGBT pretending they are having their voices silenced and that speaking out it is some defiant act that risks life and limb, and literally a revolutionary act. It is not, not even close. there is a whole corporate machine driving this. billions are pumped in. A corporate media drives and spreads these narratives, along with a global institutional framework. Thats fine and cool, but just dont pretend you are competing in the oppression Olympics.
As gay since long time I have seen how this movement evolved from really important things to be just a new target for ads and media, kinda tired of seeing this pointless stuff every year. LGBTQ+ in media it's always used to sell stuff, I wish I could at least get a discount or something free lol. I hope next year things get honest and just add the $ to the LGBTQ+ acronym.
@smithyo Yup, personally, I don’t feel too oppressed at all, but in stark contrast to you, I do have a strong empathy for people in less civilized parts of the world, who are being murdered simply for who they naturally are.
Also, lay off the “corporate machine” and “media narratives” lingo already. Like what are you even harping on about? O_o
By definition of capitalism, corporations are interested in nothing else than profit and media only want you to click on their article.
I'm pro-LGBT but Dream Daddy is outright pandering and written like a bad joke. There's also a drama with that game, but this isn't the place for that.
It’s great to see the support for the LGBTQIA+ community. I remember growing up and it was “cool” to be homophonic. I would have never seen a list of games that cater to the community. Very happy to see the change. There’s still a long way to go, but nice to see we are heading in the right direction. Happy Pride month!
@ComfyAko You clearly didn't play the DLC chapter.

no thanx , not for me
Thanks to everyone who contributed positively here. It's 5pm in our part of the world, so we'll be closing comments for now. Have a great weekend everyone. 🙂
@Rayquaza2510 Totally agree. As a completely ANTI-political vegan straight edge anarchist I don't need game protagonists to represent that. I just don't want games that promote politics/ violence towards animals/drug abuse/hierarchy/war/slavery/tiranny/totalitarianism... from a clear point of propaganda, not just part of the story and world creation. When it's done right, as part of a setting, without pushing it, I can really appreciate it even (take Disco Elysium for example, one of the best rpg's Iever played - admittedly, I played it animal friendly, anti-political, and straight edge on the first run, but went all out violently policing, drug abusing,... Because it suits the main character and the story is dystopian anyway).
Given that the norm is set by what most accept as such within a society, "heteronormative" is just how nature works. Two sexes, attracted to each other, to procreate. All else should be respected and individually accepted, not normalised while demonising children for the crimes of a handful of people they share some arbitrary traits with.
Living as a hermit myself basically,a "gipsy" or whatever, I see both "left" and "right" reacting with pure hatred towards some of the basic, harmless birthrights set inthe Universal Declaration of Human Rights, especially when you enter the field of individual sovereignty, traveling in a mobile-home without license (right to choice ofhome, right to travel,...) or insurrance (innocent until proven guilty in an actual crime with a victim and motive),... Or when I apply basic rights to ALL living beings, as a "vegan", or refuse drugs and policies pushed by politicians and pharma cartels and such.
That said, I don't need a pride month, I rather remain humble when left in peace, and I just need to NOT be shamed and blamed for living in sobriety, forgiveness and innocence, in grace and honour and conscience, physical and spiritual sovereignty and free connection of the soul, in a society where guilt and debt are socialised, profit monopolised, the spirit controled, the soul denied, agenda's of organised criminals confused with "justice", corporate policies confused with "law", and the monetary systems backed by "human resource" or "natural persons" on the global market - slaves, in other words.
