When Dark Souls launched back in 2011, it ushered in a new era of lore-filled and inscrutable combat-focused games that gave players the freedom to follow their own path and play style, but steadfastly refused to 'go easy' on them. Every encounter in FromSoftware's series, no matter how minor, has the potential to end in tears; if you blunder in mindlessly mashing buttons, you will be punished.
What defines a 'Soulslike', though? It's not just difficulty, although that's a part of it. Games that exhibit Dark Souls-style elements demand concentration and intent if you want to overcome the challenges they present. They can be 3D or 2D (side-on or top-down), but they typically include exacting combat against unforgiving enemies, large boss fights, the loss of reclaimable 'essence' or similar currency on death, and the freedom to explore different areas of the map, with your skill often being the only gate to progress down a specific path. Bonfires — or equivalent 'safe' zones that offer respite and restoration — are another key part of the Souls experience; that tension of risk vs. reward while inching through an enemy-filled environment on just a sliver of health, desperately hoping to find a bonfire around the next corner.
For the list below we've stuck to games which feature as many of those elements as possible, although several incorporate other systems and styles, or not-quite-all of the facets described above. Some inclusions are primarily associated with another genre (Metroidvania or roguelike, for example) but they feature Soulslike gameplay in some capacity. They might not fit the Souls mould perfectly, but everything below has a Soulslike flavour to a greater or lesser degree.
As with any sub-genre definition (again, see Metroidvania), there will be debate both healthy and circuitous over whether a given title qualifies for the category of Soulslike — which is fine. You may not totally agree with the list below, but rest assured that if you enjoy Dark Souls, you'll almost certainly enjoy these games thanks to shared ideas, elements and systems.
So, let's take a look — in no particular order — at the games on Switch that'll force you to git gud or go home.
Dark Souls: Remastered (Switch)
Ah yes — the Dark Souls of Dark Souls, if we're not mistaken.
Dark Souls: Remastered is a faithful remaster of a touchstone in video game design that improves overall performance of the original release while preserving all of the character traits that made it such a memorable experience. While it’s no less forgiving — and its menus are a little fiddly — this slick Nintendo Switch iteration offers an excellent way to experience Lordran’s ultra-challenging odyssey in true handheld form.
Plus, it's got Solaire of Astora amiibo compatibility that you won't find in any other version of the game. Praise the Sun, indeed.

Ashen (Switch eShop)
Ashen doesn't try to hide the fact that it's a Souls clone through-and-through. However, where many before it unwisely try to out-do FromSoftware in terms of difficulty or obtuse systems and lore, A44 has taken its game in a more refreshing, community-focused direction. This is a slightly more relaxed take on a Souls-like; it gets you into its action and gameplay rhythms quickly, isn't interested in punishing you particularly unduly and doesn't outstay its welcome. Its story and setting are enchanting and the sense of togetherness and companionship that it creates as its plot unfolds sets it apart in a genre much better known for relentless loneliness and isolation.
Salt and Sanctuary (Switch eShop)
All told, Salt and Sanctuary is just about what you’d expect it to be: it’s more or less a 2D Dark Souls, but with a little more emphasis on less. Salt and Sanctuary does an admirable job of hitting all the right beats that it needs to provide a challenging and fun action adventure that will no doubt provide a solid bang for your buck, but it doesn’t do a whole lot to stand on its own two legs; this is a game that can only thrive on the scraps generated by the overwhelming popularity of a much better game series. Therefore, we’d give this one a recommendation to Dark Souls aficionados who just can't get enough — those who’ve never been interested won’t find much new here to entice them.
Mind you, you're reading the wrong list if you're not interested in Dark Souls, hmm?
Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights (Switch eShop)
Not only does the combat in Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights take cues from Dark Souls, but the way the story is drip-fed via notes and environmental storytelling is very similar to the FromSoftware classic.
A very fine Metroidvania, Ender Lilies boasts excellent visuals throughout, with bursts of colour lighting up the otherwise dreary kingdom, and a wonderful soundtrack that we guarantee will live rent-free in your head for hours. All of this is held together by strong gameplay, with a particular focus on customisable load-outs via the spirit abilities. It’s a tough game at times, and minor frame rate dips hold it back from true greatness, but it's an experience you’ll be glad you stuck with.
Death's Door (Switch eShop)
Death's Door is nothing less than a modern classic, utilizing old gameplay ideas in a new setting to make for a short and sweet experience you won’t want to miss. The snappy combat, rewarding exploration, and relaxing music will stick with you once you've finished, and while it may not have anything 'new' to offer, Death’s Door is so high quality that you’ll hardly have time to think about it's lack of innovation. Developer Acid Nerve crafted an experience that’s absolutely worth your time and money of any fans of Zelda or Soulslike games.
Blasphemous (Switch eShop)
Blasphemous is a beautifully crafted Soulslike/Metroidvania action game set in a delightfully unhinged, deliriously gory world filled with well-designed enemies, satisfyingly meaty combat and some truly memorable and grotesque boss battles. Platforming sections are uniformly well-crafted and the whole thing comes together to create one of the most visually arresting and solidly enjoyable action titles currently available on Switch.
Spanish developer The Game Kitchen created a nightmare world in Cvstodia, one that will truly test your combat and platforming skills and leave you begging for more come that final bloody battle.
Furi (Switch eShop)
With a focus on boss fights, Furi presents a series of daunting challenges which are capable of turning all but the most committed of player into a gibbering wreck. It's a deceptively clever game that combines shooter and and beat-'em-up mechanics, all wrapped up in a stylish anime-influenced shell. It's not for everyone, with numerous difficulty spikes and an over-reliance on repetition. But it's refreshing to see a game rewards patient observation and persistence, as well as mastery of a carefully calibrated control system. While it's lacking several elements of a Souls game, it still feels very much of that ilk.
3000th Duel (Switch eShop)
3000th Duel is a highly enjoyable Metroidvania that some would argue borrows a bit too much from Dark Souls. With engaging combat bolstered by lots of unlockable weapons, a decent progression system, and some truly memorable boss fights, it can stand proud amongst the many examples of the genre currently available on Switch, even if it doesn't quite do enough to feel truly unique.
Still, if you loved FromSoftware's Souls series and fancy some more of the same — albeit a very specific slice of the same — you could do a lot worse.

there's nothing harder than dark souls as dark souls.
i like challenge so maybe i'll get one of these games?
Dark Souls 1&3 are two of my favorite games ever. But I find "Souls-like" games pretty much always disappoint me 😒
I've bought Ashen, Hellpoint, Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption, Salt & Sanctuary, Tails of Iron, Momodora, Vigil: The Longest Night, Eldest Souls, Furi, Dead Cells, 3000th Duel, etc.
These are all varying levels of decent, but every single one I get part way through, decide I'd rather be playing a real Souls game, and then I never come back to it.
But Hollow Knight is obviously phenomenal. 😁
I’ve been looking at getting Ashen for a while. I heard the Switch port isn’t good, but it looks like Nintendo Life have it an 8
Suprised to not see Morbid The Seven Acolytes on here.
Been playing Dark Souls again, recently picked it up on sale. The difficulty can throw me into an absolute blind rage at times, but yet I just keep coming back for more. I just love the atmosphere of the world, and it is incredibly satisfying when you actually succeed. I suppose that's a big part of the appeal.
That being said my fav game on this list is Hyper Light Drifter. The combat is also quite challenging, but it just really clicks with me. I feel like a badass playing HLD, whereas in Dark Souls I'm always just surviving by the skin of my teeth.
@Link81578 Morbid's great. Lovecraftian Hyper LIght Drifter.
Why aren't any of the Monster Hunter titles on here?
Those are the original 'Soulslike" games.
I've been curious about Salt and Sanctuary and Blasphemous. I know Blasphemous has an eShop demo.
The closest game to a Souls-like on this list is Hyper Light Drifter. The rest are pretty much totally unrelated.
Furi is really all about that skill. Not gaining any abilites throughout the game at all, it is one of my favorite games and i can't recommend it enough if you search for a fast paced boss rush game, it is no soulslike though as most others from this list. I would recommend Katana Zero as well, if we are talking about "git gud" games.
In general i recommend changing the title from soulslike games to something else as people might get the wrong idea in what they are expecting.
That said, i really love this list in general!
Is Dark Souls really a souls-LIKE? Isn't it just...souls? Asking for a friend...
@BloodNinja This comment is very funny to me considering that Dark Souls is on the list.
The best Souls / Souls like games?
1. Dark Souls
2. Dark Souls 2
3. Bloodborne
4. Dark Souls 3
5. Sekiro
6. Demon Souls
7. Nioh
8. Nioh 2
The rest are either more metroidvania than souls like or they are just not in the same league. No other so called souls like has impressed me.
@RendoFonzarelli I am sure the author would have put them there if those games were on Switch.
Personally i like Nioh and Sekiro over the Dark souls games though
What consists of being a Soulslike game? I’m playing Deaths Door at the moment. That game has Zelda elements…but Soulslike?
@Solaine I know, I get that. I'm just trying to make the point that if you want a souls like experience, you need to play a From Software game. Lol with the exception of the Nioh games, which for me are they only ones that either got as close or as good as the From Software games. All the rest just don't have that magic feeling and I've always been left disappointed after playing them.
You know, Dark Souls is basically the SMT of action games. If you enjoy RPGs and games like Dark Souls, SMT V and III (and Tokyo Mirage Sessions) are probably right up your alley.
This isn't really a souls game, but I always thought monster hunter is a great game series for people who love a challenge. I always liken dark souls to the sprint and MH to a marathon. Nothing more frustrating than spending 40 minutes soloing alatreon then dying and having to start over 🥴 Love them both though
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen is absolutely for the masochists that love souls-like games, especially on hard difficulty.
The controls and combat skills are very tight and if you get hit, it's totally on you, not the controls. I couldn't really get into Dark Souls on my Switch, but Dragon's Dogma is over 100 hours because the combat never really got old for me and the story imploded my mind when I uncovered it, while still maintaining a great sense of humor.
I can't stand Dark Souls, and I love Hollow Knight, Blasphemous and Death's Door nevertheless XD. So no real need of looking for a similar experience to enjoy those games.
Actually, the two first ones are more like the Castlevanias, and the last one like Zelda ALttP, imo.
I like some of the features of Souls-like games, and have played my share. Interestingly, I have never played a single game from the original 'Souls' series. Maybe one day.
As far as this list goes, Salt and Sanctuary, 3000th Duel and Blasphemous are my picks.
I love Furi too, but I'm not sure it belongs on this list. Punishing combat is pretty much the only thing it has in common...
@3rdStrongestMole I tend to agree with you there, I thought what made the Souls games great was that the combat was very complex, very tight, and often very time consuming and skill demanding to defeat enemies and accomplish goals. That sense of failing repeatedly and wasting time so that when you finally achieve something, it's 10x the feeling you get from casual games because you know you earned it is definitely a big part of the mainline MH games (not MH Stories).
@Kyloctopus The Switch port of Ashen is pretty bad. It's blurry and hard to see what's going on.

@Astral-Grain Dragon's Dogma is great, but it's not a Soulslike.
@Thumbsofsteel This is actually a pretty good definition of a Soulslike:
https://gamicus.fandom.com/wiki/Soulslike_video_games
Death's Gambit is a WAY better "2D Souls" than Salt & Sanctuary. It has the same "dying cursed city where nobody can die" vibe of Lordran, but with a twist; a very similar freeform progression system and zany equipment options, and pretty much if Blasphemous is "Soulslike Metroidvania with more Castlevania in the mix", this is "Soulslike Metroidvania with more Souls in the mix".
If old games are fair game, Demon's Crest, from the Switch Online SNES library, is also an okay fit.
Punishing combat, the occasional kaizo trap, gothic ruination, a run-down world that some (censored) is all to willing willing to burn half to the ground just to put himself on its throne. Except that (censored) is you.
Throw in giant pattern-recognition bosses and ability absorption (as this game is pretty much Mega Man X: Dark Fantasy Edition) and you get most of what makes a soulslike tick that is obtainable from a januwine 16-bit game rather than a modern throwback. Except, you know, sort of permadeath.
@MisterMan I would suggest you to read what people say before you tell them they are wrong. I never called Dragon's Dogma a Souls-like, I just said people that like Souls-like will probably also like DD.
Also, from the very article you linked in another of your replies: "Soulslike games generally have common elements like high difficulty, high-risk combat with hard-hitting enemies, sparse checkpoints, and enemies dropping souls"
If you don't think Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen has high-difficulty, high-risk combat, with hard hitting enemies, then I don't believe you have even played Dragon's Dogma, especially not on Hard Mode. Maybe I'm taking the bait by even acknowledging your reply, but your opinion isn't nearly as important as you may think.
Edit: Dragon's Dogma is also listed in the 'Examples of Souls-like games' section in the article you mentioned.
@Noelemahc I disagree. Death's Gambit is a good game, but it's not a better Soulslike. SnS captures the feeling of gloom and loneliness of Dark Souls much better than Death's Gambit. Death's Gambit is more cartoony. SnS has better weapon/build variety, maps, loot, enemy variety, bosses (way more than DG), and better level design.
Alright this is gonna sound crazy but hear me out on this one folks: Resident Evil. Yeah, yeah Resi and Souls are obviously different but they have more similarities than you might think too. Monsters, finite healing items, an assortment of weapons, and pushing through areas to survive until the next safe area. Just a thought.
Removed - disrespecting others
Nothing comes close to hallow knight.
@MisterMan
Listen man, you have an opinion and I have an opinion, and neither one is right or wrong.
However, in the article you yourself mentioned:
https://gamicus.fandom.com/wiki/Soulslike_video_games#Examples it lists Dragon's Dogma as an example of a Souls-like game. So it would appear there are several others that agree with my opinion, which again, is not right or wrong, but has substantial arguments that it could be considered a Souls-like.
It would serve you well to realize your opinion is exactly as much value as everyone else's here. Making back to back comments calling people out for having "wrong" opinions is not how you have a discussion, you just appear abrasive and disrespectful.

One of the best is Decay Of Logos, a game which got demolished in a terrible review on this site but which has a lot of great, unique qualities. While the combat isn't on the level of Dark Souls, almost everything else is better. The setting, the story, the art style, the atmosphere, and the characters are all better. It's intoxicating and addictive. Sadly, no reviewer had much to say about it, and so it will probably always be a hidden gem.
@MisterMan Aaaah that makes more sense thanks.
I always assumed Soulslike games were solely based on losing “currency/souls” when you died.
@MisterMan here is yet another example of not reading what others are saying and doubling down and making assumptions. You really gotta stop doing that. But me telling you that will only make you worse, wont it? I can't say I didn't try.
I mentioned I couldn't get into Dark Souls on Switch and I played DD on Switch significantly more, but I never said I've never played a Dark Souls game or any other souls-like game. Dark Souls has been around long before the Switch my dude.
It appears you are in the minority with your opinion here, and you can disagree all you want, that's your opinion, of course, you have every right to state your opinion. And so does everyone else.
@TheWingedAvenger has the game been patched? It wasn't just this site that gave that game a bad review - almost every site did and it looks like it runs horribly on the Switch.

Imo Zelda 2 is better than any Souls game. For someone truly disliking any of the Souls entries, I’ll admit this is a list of fantastic titles. Hollow Knight, Hyper Light Drifter, Dead Cells, etc. Nearly perfect games.
Almost makes me wonder if I’m mistaken about having a distaste for the series and genre. Almost.
@MisterMan Looks like Christmas comes early for me.
Seeing this list just makes me want the rest of the dark souls series to get ported over to switch, yesterday. My son and I are on our 6th playthrough as it is. I ended up getting another ps3, and both dark souls 2 and demons souls for us to play after.
Ashen is ok, but nothing else on switch compares to dark souls.
@NoxAeturnus I figured people would be able to infer that Dark Souls is covered.......
@BloodNinja Yes, sorry, online text isn't clear I was just joking around. I knew what you meant, it was just funny to think about it as if you didn't.
Alternative titel for this list: Dark souls and a few games from other genres.
@NoxAeturnus I should have said, “what’s a Dark Souls?”
I would also include Dragons Dogma on here.
I'm surprised to see Zelda II on this list. I don't like Souls-like games but I do like Zelda II. I can see the similarities but it's different? I mean, in some of these descriptions, it seems like you could stretch the genre to include Celeste, which I also love. I'm not disputing the inclusion of Zelda II btw. Just gave me pause to think.
Erm…. Hate to be this person but why isn’t Dark Devotion on this list?!
If Dead Cells is on here, Dark Devotion should be. I bought it and had my fun with it and I can safely say it’s not … perfected… but it is really really good if anyones interested.
I like many souls-like games but I don't actually like dark souls. Is there a different list for that? 🤔 This list specifies it is souls-likes 'if You Like Dark Souls'.
Cyber Shadow?
there's also Death's Gambit, Eldest Souls, Tails of Iron and Blue Fire. All excellent variations
I just beat two separate files of Sekiro So I’m taking a break but this list is solid. Really enjoyed Dark Souls, Hollow Knight, Furi, Hyperlight Drifter, etc.
I feel ashamed that I haven't commit to Blasphemous and Dead cell enough to finally finish them ☹️
Why there is no 3 Animus games they seem the most accurate games to Dark Souls. Yet we have Zelda 2 ....
If Zelda II is "Soulslike", then the subgenre needs to be renamed "Zelda II-like".
Gun Gun Pixies
@Kyloctopus Ashen is quite patched and runs smooth as a 30 fps game does. In my opinion it definitely deserves an 8. One of my favorites! You should give it a try. There's always this Christmas sales coming up.
@iaLgan Animus gets a lot of flak as a mobile phone game. Is it actually any good? I don't think I've seen a single review looking past that.
@Noelemahc I haven't tried the third one which i guess is the best but the first two was fun and since the article compares souls like games it's the most similar to it. Also for 3.59eur price it sure is worth it. Ah and if you didn't like dark souls than no no for animus also.
Dragon's Dogma is a great title!
@Aezetz It's not listed in here also but i highly recommend this game. Either way it's a strange list. Games are good or some decent but why would some1 make such a list comparing with Dark Souls.. There are nowhere near similar
all I'm saying is we need DS2 on switch already, absolute favorite game in the series
is salt and sanctuary good? most of the footage i've seen hasn't particularly impressed (both in terms of visual style and gameplay)
Death's Gambit Afterlife is one of the best. Easy.
@RendoFonzarelli I see, you might be right there. Did you play Code Vein as well and if so, how are your thoughts on that one?
@Thumbsofsteel it’s usually the mechanic of dropping experience (or souls) that are used to level up, when you die and you have to go back and pick it up or die again and lose it forever.
I’ve got a lot of these games on the list, salt and sanctuary, dead cells, hollow knight, hyper light drifter, blasphemous, plus cleared all the souls games from demons to Sekiro. But two games I’m really intrigued by are Tails of Iron and Death’s Door. I think I’m gonna get deaths door regardless, but unsure about dropping £20 on tails of iron. Anyone played it through that’s into fromsoft games and can tell me how it is? Review videos give away too much so haven’t watched any
@Solaine furi is amazing. I got it on ps plus when it was released, now got it on switch too. An amazing game, the atmosphere is just incredible.
@somebread in my opinion it’s a good game but something is missing. I can’t put my finger on it, but there’s something stopping this from being great and being just alright instead.
As a long time experienced gamer, I’ve never played a soulslike game. But bought Dark Souls Remastered on sale recently for switch, and actually really looking forward to the challenge. I hope I don’t get as frustrated as some commenters have been in the 250 comments on the review section for this game. As soon as I finish Dread this is next, wish me luck!
@StandardCabrera That’s what I originally thought too. That’s why I thought it was weird to apply that term to Deaths Door because you keep everything when you die in that game
Apparently the term ‘Soulslike’ is applied to other aspects of a game like combat.
I got this link on this thread that helps explain. Using this explanation, now I can relate to Deaths Door being on this list.
https://gamicus.fandom.com/wiki/Soulslike_video_games
Wait Blasphemous is good? I assumed it sucked because it was always on sale (like there’s no way Thief Simulator is good)
@MisterMan Yes, Decay Of Logos got patched and plays well now. I recommend it to any fan of Dark Souls or action RPGs as there is nothing else like it.
@Solaine Ah of course Code Vein, I forgot about that one. It was pretty decent, and at first I thought it might be great, but I never finished it and started to get a bit bored after about 15 hours. However I was playing it on gamepass on my razer mobile, maybe if it was on switch or on a bigger screen I would have persivered. Lol that's a point, I might just double check the eshop in case it ever did release on switch.
Ah Furi... Awesome game. Not mentioned a lot but one of those games without a pixel out of place, one of my favourites in the switch for sure. Ashen is great, really atmospheric, so is hyperlight drifter. Sinner sfr, I guess only if your're really craving some more tough fights but I enjoyed it.
Grimvalor needs to be added:
https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/grimvalor-switch/
@BloodNinja Hyper Light Drifter has absolutely nothing in common with Dark Souls. No stats, no similar dying mechanic, no stamina management, no different equipment or builds and the whole gameplay is completely different.
Ashen and Salt & Sanctuary are actually the only two other Souls like games on this list.
@IronTruth Hyper Light Drifter is pretty commonly compared to Dark Souls, might want to check yourself. I'm assuming from your name that you're stubborn though, so I'll just leave you to your silence.
Shout-out to Last Hero of Nostalgia. It's a pretty solid souls-inspired game with some decent humor and countless references to other games.
You forgot Dark Devotion! Although that one didn't really hit me the way the others did, it's still deserving to be on this list nonetheless.
A LOT of bangers on this list!!! You can't go wrong with pretty much any game here!!
@sketchturner
I seem to be in disagreement with nintendo life on this, as they've slipped over it twice on lists where it should probably show up, but my favorite is still Remnant: From the Ashes.
While it is better on pc (I've sunk nearly 500 hours into the pc one, hunting secrets or playing and replaying with friends), I've dumped a fair amount of time into the switch version as well.
If none of those games scratched your itch, I can't guarantee this one will, as my friends have been quite polarized on the game, but if you like experimenting with item builds as you "git gud," is definitely encourage it.
The sheer depth of the game is surprising, and doesn't truly become obvious until one has had some time with it.
Like I said, it's been polarizing in my friend group, so if you're not interested, I don't blame you, but if you're still searching for the right game to fill the itch, this might do it.
"When Dark Souls launched back in 2011, it ushered in a new era of lore-filled and inscrutable combat-focused games..."
why does the whole world ignore the first game?
Demon's Souls was the game that introduced the world to the Souls games, years before Dark Souls came out and was essentially an iterative follow up.
Can someone who has kept up with the series explain this to me?
how is zelda 2 a soulslikes game or am i missing something?
Would like to mention two 2d soulslike I really like (wow, is this an awkward rhyme?)
MORBID: nice soulslike gameplay, very good pixel art graphics, excellent macabre story
LUCAH: great soulslike gameplay with excellent customisation, graphics is "interesting" (I like it though), story is meh (it's one of those oh-so-serious crap)
@RendoFonzarelli Elden Ring?
Never thought Hollow Knight was a souls like game. So maybe it's the only game of this genre I've played. Out of this list it's sure the only one. I wanted to 100% it, but when I reached 92%, everything I had to do from that point on was so hard that I preferred to gave up, but it was a wonderful experience. Everything in the game is so good that it never goes away from you after you stop playing it.
@-wc- Mostly because it was Dark Souls and not Demon Souls the one that started the cult following of this series. Demon Souls had many unfortunate events that led to it not being as known during its release. While it was the one who started the trends, they were pretty much nailed on Dark Souls (to the point that going backwards from Dark Souls to Demon Souls is a bit harsh).
@Wisps
thanks for the explanation! i kind of figured this was the case.
as a Demon's Souls early adopter who didnt go on to play the many followups and sequels (you can thank shoddy hardware for that 😖 im not investing good money into a playstation ±3 again) i guess i just have a relatively rare perspective, valid as it may be.
however, i think if theres a game that "started it all" its very weird to pretend it's not the first one. it was critically praised at the time IIRC and specifically has all of the criteria to be a Souls game.
it's also a great game, btw. i hadnt played anything quite like it, and i evangelized it to anyone that would listen for a couple years, until Dark Souls came out and it got hype and the "git gud" people kind of ruined the vibe for me.
anyway thats my yelling and you're a cloud now. ✌️
Bleak Sword is great, if not a little grindy. At least I found I needed to grind a bit in order to stand a chance in the later stages.
Remnant: From the Ashes is incredible although much cheaper on the other platforms.
@Kiwi_Unlimited Thanks for the recommendation! I'll look into it.
@-wc-
I see where you’re coming from, and whilst I’d certainly argue that Dark Souls was the game that really launched the ‘genre’ popularity… Demons Souls was absolutely the launch pad for Dark Souls.
I’ve played an beat both, Inc PS5 remake, and really think FromSoft learnt a lot of lessons from Demons - -> Dark.
IMO - Demons Souls is almost ‘too’ obtuse in its structure and side quests, and the World Tendency system is executed v poorly (great idea in concept, but the application just doesn’t work for me)
The ‘mission’ structure of Demons is a bit odd as well, and doesn’t seem to work as well as the inter-connected world of Dark Souls.
But yeah I guess you could say that Demons Souls walked so that Dark Souls could run…
I never played either game at release though, and can’t imagine how rock hard a truly blind playthrough would have been! (Especially DeS)
Imagine not having Fextra at your fingertips to research builds etc?!
Enjoyed Death's Gambit way more than I was expecting. That game hit every spot for me and my brother. Artstyle, music, VA and level design I love thoroughly.
A bit out of subject, but I've had it with indie games. I've been disappointed to almost all of the most popular ones.
Dead Cells was so boring I never got too far in it.
Guacamelee 1 was decent but nowhere close to the best Metroidvania's. Guacamelee 2 is almost the same game except with a worse story. It's bad imo.
Hollow Knight was good while it lasted. Not a masterpiece, but a good game.
Celeste just plain sucks. The most overrated game I've played.
Ori and the Blind Forest. It's got nice visuals but I felt like I've played the same game a million times before. It's hard to put my finger on why it was so boring.
Axiom Verge is like Metroid 1 for NES. Except with better controls and a really bad writing. I couldn't force myself to finish it.
That's just a few examples. The only indie game I'm waiting is Hollow Knight Silksong, hoping it would improve the first one a lot.
As for Soulslike games, the only good ones are from From Software.
@Cia
i agree with you about most of these, but IMO Enter the Gungeon, Steamworld Dig and Shovel Knight are awesome! 👍👍
@CJD87
i appreciate your input!
i cant compare to the later ones (maybe i should go ahead and get dark souls for switch, eh?) but i will say that the crypticness of demons really matched the foul dankness of the game in general, and i was happy at the time to kind of "feel around in the dark" as it were for progress of any kind. the game really creeped me out and the opaqueness of it all really added to that feeling!
i will also say that im quite good at games, but i often stop short of "mastery" with most games, and rarely beat the really big ones. i intended to keep going with Demon's Souls when my PS3 DIED☠️ and i became a full time wii gamer, and stuck with nintendo exclusively ever since for new consoles. 👍
i like what you said, Demon's walked so Dark could run. I think it deserves alot more credit. modern gamers are too quick to "update" the classics and leave them in the dust. you cant improve the new experience without destroying something of the old one. OTOH i should test my theory and just play the damn second game lol!
thanks again! 🤘
I appreciate the clarification on what constitutes a "Souls-Like" game at the start of this article. I see the term used so often, but didn't really know what it meant other than "being difficult". This gave a little more insight, thank you!

Ah so you’re now 100% Nintendo? If so, I would really highly recommend the Dark Souls remaster on Switch. It runs pretty great (as you’d hope, considering the age!) and IMO it levels up massively from its predecessor.
You’ll also be at an advantage, having played DeS you’ll know what to expect… and also I think you’ll be really pleasantly surprised with how much better DS is (mechanically, lore, build diversity, world building etc)
Additionally, and assuming you’re still into ‘Souls-y’ titles - my absolute favourite non-FromSoftware title on Switch is called “Salt and Sanctuary”. Essentially this is 2D Dark Souls, with vast skill trees and epic boss battles. Nearly always on sale in EShop also!
So yeah definitely 100% get Dark Souls, as it really is an amazing experience … nothing quite like it. Such a shame that the sequels haven’t been ported to Switch (yet?) as they would sell massively
To be fair if you're really into Souls like games, i doubt The Switch is your only console and you'll likely just play Dark Souls on other consoles.
I've played DS1, DS3 and Elden Ring, i find the formula to be actually kinda boring now, FromSoftware the people behind the games, they found this gameplay formula in 2009 for a game called Demon Souls, they then used that same gameplay formula with minor tweaks and slapped a new skin on and literally released 1 game every 2.5 years using the same formula and they somehow became industry darlings for it.
Demon Souls - 2009
Dark Souls - 2011
Dark Souls 2 - 2014
Bloodborne - 2015
Dark Souls 3 - 2016
Sekiro - 2019
Elden Ring - 2022
7 games in 13 years and i haven't even included Demon Souls Remastered. If EA or Activision or Bethesda or literally ANY other developers done the same thing, which many of them do, they'd have been bashed and dragged through the mud for it and they do get bashed and dragged through the mud for it, Assasins Creed literally did EXACTLY this and got totally ripped apart for it.
The fact that Fromsoftware did the same thing and became industry darlings shows how bias gamers can be, it's really bad.
Best alternative to dark souls to play?
Based off difficultly probably Celeste, but I don’t mean just a normal play through, I mean a complete max% playthrough, have fun getting 20 nearly impossible golden strawberries and 1 that is certainly impossible! (Farewell Deathless Strawberry)
