Updated with Mario Strikers: Battle League. Enjoy!
Since the dawn of humankind we homo sapiens have sought to prove ourselves with competitive feats of skill, dexterity or sheer strength. This has taken many forms, but usually involves performing some task in the quickest time, besting your opponent(s) in a physical bout, or scoring the most goals or points or something, usually with a ball of some description.
In these enlightened digital times, it's possible for almost anybody to get off the spectator's bench and start participating in their favourite sport via the wonder of video games, and Nintendo Switch has a host of sports games enabling you to play from the comfort of your couch, regardless of your ability or skill. Yes, you too can be a tennis champ, a pro baller or a wind..., err, jammer.
Below we've picked out — in no particular order — the best sports games on Switch. We've eliminated autosport racers from the lineup here, so if you prefer sports with two or more wheels, best head over to our list of the best racing games on Switch. If you're down with ball games, though, or fancy yourself as an Olympian, you've come to the right place.
So, let's head to the first tee, get on our marks and kick off the best sports games on Switch...
Mario Tennis Aces (Switch)
On the face of it Mario Tennis Aces is a fun, arcade-y take on on of the world's most popular racket sports. However, under its colourful facade lies deep mechanics that enable you to employ a variety of strategies to outplay and/or outwit your opponent on the opposite side of the court, whether it be a Mario brother, an anthropomorphic celestial body or a fire-breathing plant with teeth. Alternatively, you can switch to Swing Mode and experience again the glory of Wii Sports, not to mention the infamous 'Wii elbow' that families across the globe endured on Boxing Day 2006.
With lovely presentation and a roster of players that has only grown since launch, this is a thoroughly charming rendition of a thoroughly charming sport that also delivers for Waluigi fans. Game, set and match.

Rocket League (Switch eShop)
You could say that this is the best football game on Switch and you wouldn't hear any arguments from us, although it may aggravate some football fans. That said, people tend to get aggravated over the tiniest things, like using the word 'football' instead of 'soccer', for example. You just can't win sometimes.
That is unless you play Rocket League where everyone's a winner, even when you lose as much as we tend to. Combining an accessible arcade-style car experience with a floaty, giant rendition of the beautiful game, its large amount of pop culture DLC might draw people in (a certain demographic will find cars like the Back to the Future DeLorean, Ghostbusters' Ecto-1 and Knight Rider's KITT irresistible), but it's the raucous gameplay and adrenaline hit when your team bundles the ball over the line that keeps us coming back.
So there we are. Rocket League - the best football game on Switch. *runs*
NBA 2K22 (Switch)
NBA 2K22 is another fine entry in the franchise that continues the developer's habit of delivering satisfyingly solid ports of their basketball sims on Nintendo Switch. Yes, most of the modes don't try anything massively new — beyond MyCareer's revamped Neighbourhood setting — and the loading screens will have you pulling your hair out from time to time, but refined core gameplay and enough content to keep you playing until the end times make this one an easy recommendation for b-ball fans.
Alternatively, the previous entry in the series (NBA 2K21, of course) does much of what this game does, and probably far cheaper if you can still find it.
Windjammers (Switch eShop)
If you're after some mean, disc-slingin' two-player action, Data East's cult classic Windjammers is just the game you're looking for. Featuring the same fast and addictive gameplay that had us hooked in 1994, you'll need a second player to really get the best out of this, and fortunately Switch makes playing with a friend a breeze.
This was the premier disc-based competitive sports game on the console and well worth (re)discovering, although there's also the sequel to investigate...
Windjammers 2 (Switch eShop)
With Windjammers 2, Dotemu has taken the fiendishly addictive core formula of the Neo Geo classic and improved upon it in every way. The core gameplay here remains as immediately endearing as ever whilst being enhanced and given a real strategic kick by a bevvy of new moves and skills that add to the fun without detracting from or overcomplicating proceedings. Yes, there's not much in the way of modes, but this is another banger from Dotemu — an all-time classic improved upon, an arcade classic refined for a new generation.
Super Mega Baseball 3 (Switch eShop)
Sony has stated that MLB The Show will no longer be platform-exclusive to PS4, but with the Switch version of MLB The Show 22 not quite hitting it out of the park for us, baseball devotees should be investigating Super Mega Baseball 3. What it lacks in hyperrealism and officially-licensed teams it more than makes up for with a carefully adjusted set of physics that are deep enough to cater to RBI Baseball players while offering up the welcome addition of some improved modes. Franchise mode alone feels like a proper extension of the brand, with its irreverent sense of humour lending a welcome nuance to an otherwise content-heavy sports simulation. Super Mega Baseball 2: Ultimate Edition is still great, but the sequel improves on it and is the best baseball game on Switch as a result — definitely worth a swing if you're into that sort of thing.
Neo Turf Masters (Neo Geo)
A classic arcade-style golf sim from SNK, Neo Turf Masters (or Big Tournament Golf in the US) was a winner on the Neo Geo and it continues to be hugely enjoyable on Switch over two decades on. Hamster's port perfectly replicates the addictive gameplay of the original which grabs you whether you're a fan of spoiling your walks or not.
If you're happy with a more abstract take on whacking a tiny white ball into a distant hole, Golf Peaks is a nice little puzzler that's worth a look and the critically acclaimed What The Golf? is coming to Switch soon. Neo Turf Masters is one of the best ‘pure’ golf games on Switch. Of course, if you want a little more RPG with your golf game, you'll probably want to investigate our next pick...
Golf Story (Switch eShop)
If you remember Mario Golf from the Game Boy Color, you'll have a good idea of the sort of experience RPG Golf Story tees up. Fan of deep, realistic simulation might want to steer clear as Golf Story will have you putting your ball skills to use in a wider range of contexts than belting your Titlelist 2 down a boring old fairway. You'll be called upon to feed hungry alligators, knock things off high surfaces and also relax with the occasional round of pitch 'n' putt. Not every game has to be a make-or-break round at Augusta or St Andrews, you know.
Golf Story is lighthearted RPG nonsense of the highest calibre, with a good helping of golf thrown in. It's a very fine indie Switch exclusive and we can't recommend it enough if you're a fan of RPGs, golf or video games in general.
NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 (Switch)
If you reckon realism is overrated in sports-based video games, NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 might be just what you're looking for in a basketball game. Of course, it still features microtransactions and it will take you a while to grind out every player (this is still a 2K title, after all), but the core hoop-shooting experience is a strong one. It's not the NBA Jam-beater 2K positions it as, but if you get a buzz from big heads and a more arcade-y approach on the court, Playgrounds 2 is definitely worth a dunk.
FIFA 19 (Switch)
FIFA on Switch is an odd one. If you've never played a modern FIFA game and picked up any of the Switch entries, you'd likely think it's a fine game. You wouldn't be wrong — the base footy experience here is very solid and enjoyable — but veterans of the series will find it hard to overlook the cut corners and caveats of the 'Legacy' Switch versions. These games are missing key modes from their counterparts on PS4 / PS5 and Xbox One / Xbox Series X|S, so if you're FIFA enthusiast with access to those, it's hard to recommend these versions.
If you're not comparing like-for-like, however, and you're just looking for a decent kickaround on Switch, FIFA 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22 deliver a decent game, although the latter two literally updated the kits and player rosters for their respective years and nothing else. Frankly, we've lost patience with EA's cynical attitude to Switch-owning series fans, so we'd hunt down a copy of 19.

Super Blood Hockey deserves to be here for any fans of NES ice hockey:
Nice list, though I'd add Tennis World Tour to the list!
...nah, just kidding. It's awful.
We need a Mario soccer!!! Gamecube and wii versions were incredible.
Mario Golf please! I'm talking about like the N64 version or Cube version. The 3ds one was ok but not good enough.
@Roam85 agreed, sheer ignorance and not a definitive list. To be honest, the Switch has not been blessed with many contemporary or simulated sports games. Most are either arcade or abstract games. I wish there was more licensed games or sport capable indie dev's.
What about Madden? Oh...wait.
Street hoop is pretty good especially in multiplayer
Why the hell is one of those terrible Fifa ports here.
How can you not mention the best sports game on the switch, Mutant Football League? Oh that's right, the game totally went over this site's head.
Me and my son have regular matches on Neo Turf Masters an absolutely fantastic multiplayer game
Golf Story is brilliant, still one of my favourite eShop games. Don't really care about the rest of the list though. A few like Rocket League are decent but then a lot of them are just mediocre to bad. Mario Strikers when?
I can't find (Neo Turf Masters) on the U.S.A Eshop @dartmonkey??? The article says it's hugely enjoyable on Switch over 2 decades on. was it just released in the U.K. or something? Oh yea you also left out the V in over 2 decades on.
Edit: Someone answered my question in comment #15 so no need to respond @dartmonkey.
I see way more benefit in playing something like Ring Fit Adventure (track, rowing, and such are sports) actually making the player move and getting fit as opposed to just watching it happen to someone else.
That said, the usual sports games are great for young kids to learn rules and tactics before getting out there to do the real thing in a team environment. I think. Should be!
@CurryPowderKeg79 is it under the name of big tournament golf it’s the same game the original Neo geo game has different names in different regions
I almost threw up when I saw Mario Tennis Aces lead off the list. God, I hated that game!
But this list is mostly painfully predictable (I wouldn't have guessed Windjammers or Neo Turf Masters). They left out the Switch's truly greatest sports game, and no one even knows about it... PENGUIN WARS!! It's dodgeball with an extra layer of stupid, but it's so much fun.
Thanks for the info @Gs69 much appreciated.
Super Mega Baseball is absolutely great. Not only are the mechanics tight, fun and satisfying, but there's an insane amount of customization you can do with it. Every team name, 4 logos for each club, every player look/name/stats, seasons, game length, 99 different levels of difficulty... One of my favourite games on Switch. I love it
Forgot one, the outstanding Mutant League Football.
It’s a travesty that NHL and Madden are not on Switch
Dont mind the odd sports game but I must admit that I dont even own one on the switch. I had NBA playgrounds 2 for a while but it went from being addictive to repetitive over a couple of weeks. Only other one I fancy that on the list is Golf story but I've never took the plunge. Wind hammers is ace but I have that on my bar top arcade.
We need an NFL game on the Switch badly. A football game on a hybrid console would sell like hotcakes.
I have been enjoying Olympics 2020. The Japanese/Asian release has had complete English support since launch. Frankly, I don't understand why Sega has been delaying the Western release for as long as they have, unless they want all of the patches to be included on a cartridge.
Slim pickings eh?
@Roam85 Super Blood Hockey is very fun. Wish they had online multiplayer
I'd like to second NBA 2K Playgrounds 2! We've had it for over a year now and it's great fun especially for a group
ARMS (Boxing)
I really wish Nintendo or 3rd party developers want to revive Boxing / Kickboxing games like K-1 World GP PS2 / K-1 Pocket GP GBA as the Boxing / Kickboxing sport is not really popular sport.
@Spoony_Tech You totally got me. I actually read your comment and jumped straight to Google to lookup 'Mario Gold', thinking "Wow, how have I never even heard of that before - what even is it?"
@gcunit Stupid autocorrect....
Super Mega Baseball 2 is super mega awesome! Brilliant difficulty levelling built around an “ego” mechanic to take it from dead simple to technical.
Golf Story is great too - can’t wait for Sports Story!
The microtransactions based games aren’t best suited to a Nintendo platform
Football Manager?
Mario Kart?
Ring Fit?
Football Heroes Turbo - Love it! Well worth the money!
@CurryPowderKeg79 I've added the alternative name into the entry
The switch really needs a football game
Slow day at the office, guys?
Fifa 19 isn't even the last one (even thought FIFA20 is probably the same game reskinned);
Mario Tennis for Switch is the worst in the series so far;
and Golf Story is more an RPG than a golf game.
Also, Windjammers is cool and all but is that even an actual sport?
Switched out Super Mega Baseball 2 for Super Mega Baseball 3
Subbed NBA 2K20 for 2K21 and added PGA Tour 2K21.
FIFA being in this list is a joke.
Rocket League is amazing. After I looked up Rocket League tips, who kicks off, defense, the game really opened up. Ranked has the more even matching system; that's where it's at. I still play some casual matches. Drop Shot mode is great fun too.
@tonyhoro False. Mario Tennis Ultra Smash for Wii U was far far worse.
When you need FIFA legacy edition to complete the list, it should be a sign that a list is not needed.
The Japanese only release of Pro Baseball Spirits 2021/2022 is by far my favourite sports game on Switch. It would be nice to see Konami make an MLB game with the same engine because it plays much better than The Show 22. Both Pro Yakyuu Famista games are really good too.
What about The Show 22?!?!
Where is Nintendo Switch Sports? Definitely the best
Nice list! Pure Pool is great and relaxing. Nice to see some smaller titles on the list. 😎
Err.. I thought this was going to be a Switch Sports love fest, and it isn’t even included on your list. What gives?
@Wesker I bought Switch Sports, but agree with NL’s review score and criticism (6/10). It is lacking in variety. I wouldn’t put it on a list of best sports games for Switch.
When Golf is added, that should help some.
@Tandy255 I don’t know buddy. I love playing bowling with family, friends or online. It’s a staple in my household.
@Anti-Matter ARMS and Splatoon 2. Neither one made the cut. Which is fine for Splatoon 2. It already gets lots of recognition.
Lonely Mountain is much better than Descenders.
Rocket League is the best sports game, period.
I can understand wanting some other games to mix it up though. Everyone love cart racers and some of us enjoy a relaxing game like pool or golf.
I'll admit, making a "Best Nintendo Switch Sports Games" list and not including Nintendo Switch Sports is a bold move.
My opinion of sports games has been irreversibly tarnished by EA.
Windjammers 2's lack of proper tutorial and modes really got under my skin.
Switch Sports is the only sports game I need, and if you're looking for a game that plays Tennis like Wii Sports, there is no alternative. Mario Tennis is just disappointing if that's what you're looking for. And the Bowling is better and faster than Clubhouse Games 2, and these have rollback netcode, so it's a million times better than Sports Club's laggy experience, or the offline games. As good as the CPU is, it's never going to be comparable to playing real opponents, and the weekly costumes, titles, emojis, etc. make it hard to stop playing. I'm kind of surprised it's not listed here.
@Nintendo_Thumb the problem there is a tip you can hit 300/300 points in Switch Sports Bowling always. Online it´s a big draw 300/300 people. No fun...
Fell for the hype on Mario Strikers and I DEEPLY regret it. No 4v4 online?! What the what. Fun enough mechanics but brought way, way down by some bare bones essentials not being included.
@dartmonkey Kick out FIFA and put Trials Rising there instead.
I'm the kind of gamer who would like to play sports games on the Switch but I think the genre isn't served too well on the console. I have enjoyed all the Mario Sports type games on the Switch but admittedly have moreso on previous Nintendo consoles (yet to play Strikers Switch though).
Golf Story, Pure Pool, Windjammers 2, Mario&Sonic Olympics & Descenders are all good to varying extents.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater "collection" stands out as excellent in particular
The Super Mega Baseball 3 blurb reads like MLB The Show isn't out on Switch yet, it really should be on this list, it's a great game. Very underappreciated
Kinda surprised that Mutant Football League didn't make this list.
@antisumo even worse. It refers to smb2… they really should clean up thiese lists.. and kick out fifa aswell.
@romanista I'll let them off with mentioning smb2 as they're just saying it's still good but smb3 improves on it. But to completely miss The Show?? I've sunk over 200hrs into it, it's just so good!
@dartmonkey Might want to mention Fifa 22 alongside 20 and 21...you know, in case the unsuspecting reader sees it exists and thinks it might be different.
Definitely big on Mario Sports games, though. I really enjoyed Super Rush and Aces, and I'm definitely looking at Battle League. It'll be my first Strikers game, assuming you don't count Sports Superstars on 3DS.
This article needs some serious updating. Much of the text is years old, making the whole article feel like the EA approach to FIFA. Print it once and then reprint forever with minor updates. (Which is sort of ironic no?)
Oh, and Retro Bowl isn't good. Super repetitive, no running game and defense is CPU run. Football Heroes Turbo is a dramatically better game.
Just buy fifa 18 then update the squads manually yourself
@Rykdrew Why don't you just play offline then? The lag-fest on Sports Club online wasn't any better (if you could find an opponent), and the Wii games didn't even have online. It would have been better if they had more options than just the 1 vs 30, but it's still far as I can tell the best Bowling game on the console.
@Nintendo_Thumb Unfortunately, the Switch doesn't have good bowling games.
Switch Sports bowling has a way of making you strike 100% of the time, which totally takes away the fun.
The Clubhouse games 51 bowling alley also has a trick that allows you to make 100% strikes.
So...they are two games with no meaning to exist. Because there will always be a 300x300 tie...or, if you play with people without knowledge of the trick, you will have to miss on purpose, and it won't be fun either.
What is a shame!
If I can play online, I'd rather play online. For example, here 3 people play online co-op against hundreds of people at the same time on Just Dance!
I don't think we've ever played Just Dance offline.
I think I would hardly play Switch Sports offline, because the situations where I would play with more people offline, these people prefer to play Mario Kart or Just Dance (online coop).
That's just how bowling is, in real life or not. Some people know how to get strikes. You can't make a bowling game where it's not possible to get strikes, it's not like golf where there's varying wind or player interactivity like soccer or tennis, a game of bowling should be the same on the first frame as it is on the last. There's no element of chance involved in bowling, it's all skill, so if you've got the skills and know how it's done, you should be able to do it 100% of the time.
Seems like a problem that's plagued bowling games since the invention of the genre. I guess you could bowl outside with a wind meter or force you to use random weighted balls to add a little bit of RNG but it's not very realistic.
@YoshiFlutterJump I’ve added a mention of 22 and updated a couple of other entries. For anyone wondering where Switch Sports and MLB The Show are, we scored them both 6/10. While enjoyable, they don’t quite make the cut for the best Switch sports games. Check out our reviews for more details. 👍
SNK's Baseball Stars 2 should be here.
Including EA's no effort FIFA legacy edition on this list and not Switch Sports is a disgrace
