Every decade or so, something big happens to bring zombies back into our lives. Whether it was the release of George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead in 1978, the publication and subsequent adaptation of The Walking Dead, the hugely popular 'Zombies' mode in the Call of Duty series, or the meteoric rise of The Last of Us, we love a date with the undead.
This fascination with these brain-munching beings has inspired games by the boatload. Yes, there are the two aforementioned series, but the list of great zombie games goes on. The Switch, for the most part, has steered clear of these big titles. There are a lot of zombie games on the console for you to sink your teeth into, but the number of them that we would actually recommend playing? That's a much shorter list.
A zombie invasion is all about preparation work, so we are going to hammer up the following boards across the doorway before we bunker down. Firstly, what do we mean by a 'zombie game'? There was a lot of debate on this one, but we decided that we were only going to include games where the zombies are the focus. If we started banging every game with zombie-like creatures onto the list then we would be here for days and we couldn't, with good conscience, go saying that something like Minecraft is one of the best zombie titles on Switch now, could we?
This leads us on to our second board: what do we mean by 'zombie'? We can't just focus on the green, peeling skin kind, but, again, if we were to add anything that staggers after you with its arms stretched out front then we could go on forever. So, we have chosen to focus only on titles where the enemy is indisputably zombified. Reanimated corpses or infected living hosts, we need to look at these guys and say, undeniably, "yep, that's a zombie"
With the bunker prepared, it's time to dive right into the crème de la crème (or should that be 'braín de la braín'?) of zombie games on Switch:
The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season (Switch eShop)
The Walking Dead might just be the most prominent piece of zombie media of the past decade. Between the comics and the series, the franchise has long held the genre in the palm of its decaying hand. While the Telltale series of games may have always seemed like the younger brother of the trio, they are no worse because of it. Set in the same universe as Robert Kirkman's Rick Grimes, The Complete First Season is awash with fantastic storytelling, voice acting and character development and it plays beautifully on the Switch. Based on the technically-improved version that came to PS4 and Xbox One, this is the best version of where the Telltale series all began, and what a ride it turned out to be.
Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville Complete Edition (Switch)
Who says zombies can't be fun for kids? Well, give them a novelty weapon and send them into a war against a team of plants (the zombies that is, not the kids) and we dare you not to have a good time. The online shooter model wasn't the first expansion that sprung to mind when we were playing the original Plants vs. Zombies mobile game back in the day, but hey, if the shoe fits. The game plays about as well as you would expect it to on the Switch, but with heaps of content and customisation options, this is a great choice for those who want to see zombie games from the other side of the line.
Dying Light Platinum Edition (Switch)
Dying Light Platinum Edition is one of those Switch ports that you never thought would be possible. While it might not play quite as well as some of the bigger boys in console gaming, it does work on the Switch and it is still great. The world is absolutely packed full of zombies, making it a genre entry unlike any other on the console. Whether you are fleeing from a hoard or using any blunt object imaginable to maintain an element of stealth, there is a real tactility to the undead on display and a masterful feat of bringing a big ol' game to a portable device.

Zombie Army 4: Dead War (Switch)
You know exactly what you are getting with Rebellion Switch ports and Zombie Army 4: Dead War is no exception. This is yet another port that feels like it shouldn't work on the Switch, but actually runs remarkably well. You'll be taking on hoards of zombies from all angles in any method that you see fit. There is guts and gore a-plenty so this isn't one for the faint hearted. If, however, you wanted to boil the genre down to its basic components (zombies and killing them) then you need look no further.
The Walking Dead: The Final Season (Switch eShop)
It seems only fitting that this list should cover both where the Telltale TWD series starts and where it ends. The Final Season might not pack quite the same punch as its predecessors, but it still serves as a clear reminder that when it comes to all-things zombie, in Kirkman's material we trust. This last entry continues the choice-driven gameplay to the bitter end and it therefore lacks some of the trigger-mashing action that many look for in the zombie genre. If, however, you are in for a story about life in the apocalypse, then this series is a must-play.
Death Road To Canada (Switch eShop)
This is yet another example of a game that lets you live through a zombie apocalypse rather than simply just shoot your way out of it. Death Road To Canada is all about making a life for yourself as you attempt to escape the zombie-infested country. There will be supermarket dashes and human clans to negotiate with, but where the game really succeeds is how it lets you shape the narrative to your satisfaction. With an endless number of possibilities in character perks and team builds, this is one for those who want to see the apocalypse from all angles.
Darkwood (Switch eShop)
Darkwood is perhaps the scariest game on this list. The number of jump scares and disturbing images are kept to a minimum, but where this game really succeeds is in getting under your skin and sitting there throughout the entire playtime. You will be peering into dark corners (did something just move over there?) and listening to painful silences that come in-between the moments of tension. Don't get us wrong, when Darkwood gets disturbing it really goes whole hog, but it's the chills that make this one to remember.
Dead Or School (Switch)
It is true, the mutant antagonists in Dead Or School might not be your typical zombies through and through, but with their stumbling hoard movements, bite-y tendencies and physical appearance, they very much give off the zombie vibes that we are after. Combine this with a combat system that is all about taking these monsters out head-on and you have a title which can easily fall into the category of 'zombie games' without much hesitation. The game itself is janky and suffers with some performance issues it is true, but the fun that can be had with this one makes its shortcomings easy to overlook.
Resident Evil (Switch eShop)
You didn't think we'd forget this one, did you?
For many, the first Resident Evil is the definitive zombie game. This 2019 Switch port (leaning heavily on 2002's GameCube 'REmake') has all the hallmarks of a classic survival horror and that's arguably because it invented them in the first place. Long corridors, quick-solve puzzles, B-movie vibes and an overwhelming number of zombies make this a prime candidate for the Granddaddy of the genre. Yes, the tank controls are still tricky to get your head around and some hair-pulling inventory management may be more off-putting than the zombies themselves to many, but it's worth bearing in mind that this isn't a modern game. It is a product of its time and we love it all the more because of it.
There are, of course, a number of games that deserve an honourable mention in this category. 2022's brilliant survival horror Signalis has all the hallmarks of a great zombie game, albeit with a focus on robots rather than flesh and bone. On the other end of the spectrum sits Inside, a title which has zombified sections with the best of 'em, but there is too little there for it to be a 'zombie game'. Then we have the likes of Dark Souls and Minecraft. which are both packed with zombies and the undead. We cannot pretend, however, that either one fits the bill of a 'zombie game'.
Well there you have it, our rundown of the very best zombie games on Switch. While the console might not be the first port of call for spending some time with the undead, there remain plenty of titles that you can enjoy nonetheless.

This reminds me I need to start dying light! My backlog is so big I sometimes forget what games I even own without lists like this to remind me. 🤦♂️🤦♂️
How can you forget 'Zombies Ate My Neighbors'?!! That game is an absolute Masterpiece!
I'm at the point where I start believing that the countless hours I think I spent playing the excellent World War Z on Switch were just a fever dream or something. Because it seems like no one else knows this incredible port of a great co-op zombie shooter on Switch exists.
But then who was I playing with? And what is this box and cartridge? And why does Nintendo's "year in review" say it was my most played game that year? I think it does not simply belong on this list, it belongs with the best ports, it belongs with Zombie Army 4, PvZ, and Dying Light (and I may be less enthousiastic about some of the other games because I played them on other platforms). But if you want to kill MANY, MANY, MANY zombies, (or get completely overrun by them and annihilated with no chance to recover) there is probably literally no better game for that than World War Z. It even had a graphical upgrade, gyro aim, extra chapter and modes, all added post release, and the extra chapter has a very unique part as well, in complete darkness, where only 1 player has a light, the other 3 don't.
I also really like Zombie Night Terror, but I can understand that one not being listed among the best.
All of a sudden I’m missing Zombi U.
I’m probably one of few that was well bought into the Wii U, my daughter still has it her house now and plays now and again on it.
@Dezzy70 Zombi u was one of my favourite games on the system. Always wished it was ported to the switch but I've got dying light now so it's not all bad!
World War Z, Dying Light and Zombie Army 4 are my top three zombie games.
Just wished the developer of World War Z hadn’t abandoned supporting it and released the updates that other consoles have.
Also think both World War Z and Dying Light needed better media coverage for Switch as the online community are few.
The Walking Dead also allows you the option to romance a man or a girl. Just try not to get your love killed though.
@HandheldHaunter
It that dying light on switch?
Is that a cloud game?
What is it like please?
@NintendoEternity
I would love a remake or 2D-HD remaster of ZAMN!
@Dezzy70
https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/nintendo-switch/dying-light-platinum-edition
I haven't played it but Nintendo life's review sounds very positive
I feel like Dark Souls really should fit the criteria for a zombie game. You're undead, nearly all your friends are undead, and most of your enemies are either undead or horrifically mutated things that used to be people.
@Classic603 that would be Incredible
@Classic603
Just watched and DF analysis, thank you.
@Dezzy70 No it's NOT a cloud game. There's some pop in but after playing for 10 hours you just don't notice. There hasn't been any frame drops, it all just runs very smooth. Highly recommend it! As a side note if your in a PAL area like Europe or Australia you'll have to hunt down a physical cart. It's not available on the eShop.
@Classic603 I highly recommend Dying Light
@HandheldHaunter
Yes have seen it in the shops.
That’s a bit lame I’m all digital apart from Bayonetta 3. And don’t really want another cartridge.
Well they can loose my sale if they Can’t be bothered to make it digital in the UK.
@NintendoEternity Yep! Even if the port itself was said to have some weird faults to it...c'mon..still Zombies Are My Neighbours! It is a stone cold classic.
@Classic603 You are probably aware, but you should def check out the spiritual sequel DAMN when that eventually comes to life. That will be for Steam and Switch. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1372650/Demons_Ate_My_Neighbors/?utm_source=twitter
@Dezzy70 Not the developers fault. It got banned in Germany where Nintendo Europe is located and as such all PAL territories were banned from a digital release too.
@Mana_Knight
I've never heard of this. Is it actually similar? If so that'd be a fun game I'd jump on
@Classic603 Very! They are very much aiming for that. Follow them on Twitter if you are on there for updates. It is co-produced by Greg Johnson's company (TJ and Earl creator) if that means anything for you! https://twitter.com/Watch
Surprised dead rising isn't on it it's an Xbox 360 game & got ported to PS4 & Xbox one would be great if that was portable
From this list I own Dead Or School; it's a cute little game
However in general I don't think the Switch is the best platform for zombie games. I'm personally not a huge fan of super gritty hyper-realistic games, but I feel like those lend themselves to the zombie genre but not to Switch graphics.
.
@HandheldHaunter
Why is that then?
I guess it didn’t suit the Nintendo e shop.
Resident Evil Remake is amazing but the Switch port has annoying load times.
Nope it was the German rating board. But since the Nintendo Europe headquarters are in Germany it seems to have affected all pal regions for some weird reason.
I will have to get Zombie Army 4 as I have the excellent Zombie Army Trilogy and loved it.
@Dezzy70 No it’s not cloud and it’s the full game with all the DLC. The only thing it didn’t get were the seasonal events.
It’s one of those ports you hear people say shouldn’t be possible.
Lastly I think that the game was banned in Germany and so isn’t on the EU e-shop so the physical copies are now also hard to find.
i still need to beat dead or school love this game.
@Dezzy70 I was a big Wii U guy too - I really appreciated that system. I had Zombie U too, though I was not very good at it!
@Mana_Knight news to me. Thanks a lot! On my wishlist 😁
I have a physical copy of Dead or School somewhere, I should check it out.
All of the Resident Evil games feel right at home on Switch (except the cloud ones). Really good to play pick up and go.
Dang, can't believe Capcom hasn't brought Dead Rising to Switch yet. At least 1 and the Fortune City series (Case Zero, 2, Case West, Off The Record) would be great.
Isn't DOOM considered a zombie game? All entries are better than most of this list.
"Hey Joe, you wanna play a zombie game?"
Ugh, why is Plants vs Zombies on here? EA ruined that series, only the first original game and the first Garden Warfare game is any good.
...Well, at least Death Road is on here, one of the very few rogue games that I actually like.
I am just gonna rant about how the Walking Dead series almost never goes on sale on the US eshop.
I remember playing the original RE on Playstation and it blew my mind. Those dogs through the windows, even though I knew it was going to happen made me jump everytime.
Then got the Gamecube remake, it was good, but could never get past the shark tank, just couldn't work it out.
@Dezzy70 I bought the Zombi U deluxe bundle at launch, and it still is on top of my launch day console / game bundle purchases satisfaction scale. Too bad that it never got the recognition it deserves.
Death Road to Canada!
@Shambo
I really enjoyed the game and with the Wii U Pad being used a bit, it felt sort of good at the time.
@NintendoEternity The game is great, but the collection on Switch had some very noticeable input lag when I first played it. Not sure if they fixed it yet or not. But the other big buzzkill was they blocked the BCDF code for the Day of the Tentacle level from working. You lose a potential bonus life, and it’s not normally accessible otherwise I think so no harm no foul. But it’s a shame the game isn’t 100% intact due to licensing.
@Dezzy70 I got Dying Light when it came out on Switch and it runs excellent. You can buy the physical version pretty much anywhere.
Zombie Night Terror is a good one too, only thing is since it's a port of the mobile and Steam game, you could only play it via handheld mode with the touch screen. It's basically similar to Lemmings, Lost Vikings, or King Arthur's World but with zombies instead of those other things. An update to use the joycons were discuss but I'm not sure if it ever got patch into the game. Maybe I'll return to it again soon.
