The first Nintendo Direct of 2014 is down and, at this stage, it's tricky to digest and 'grade'. On the surface it was actually packed with announcements — some unique between North America and Europe — with a number of new titles shown, while footage was revealed for major titles such as Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2 and Monolith Soft's X; oh, there was a new challenger revealed for Super Smash Bros., too.
There were also, it must be said, issues with the streams, perhaps the worst we've seen to date. Those focused on the North American broadcast had a solid alternative with Nintendo's YouTube channel, but gamers in Europe were stuck with Ustream and what was the shoddiest performance to date — whether trying to view in the lowest resolution here on Nintendo Life or Nintendo's official page, performance was either choppy or non-existent. We missed large swathes of information and had to catch up with the YouTube video that was posted at the end, but it certainly sucked some of the enjoyment out of the experience. Whether the fault of Nintendo or Ustream, the big N will hopefully resolve the issues for next time.
But still, quite a lot actually happened, even if all-important release windows were excluded and there may have been a lack of Hyrule Warriors-style shocks. As there were actually so many details and stories have already fallen well off the front page, here's our usual summary with all of the links you need; the broadcasts are also included at the end, including the Japanese version.

Really great showing this time!
Not a bad direct, but now that I know Peppy might be in Steel Diver, I feel the need to support Star Fox.
Although I enjoyed the insane level of hype in the 5 minutes before the broadcast, it was almost exactly as I expected with the Bayonetta 2 and X trailers being a bonus because I thought they'd be saving late 2014 games for e3. Hopefully the next few NDs will have some nice surprises.
Definitely could have been better, but not that bad overall. Started out strong, but slowly came down. I'm hoping they're still working hard on stuff that they didn't show.
Quite horrible direct I thought - did they show us a single new thing? Why did they even have a direct, when most of what they showed were trailers anyway? The first 5 minutes were good, then came a boring 20 or so minutes, and then some Wii U trailers.
I am disappoint, but that's only cause I expected a new reveal. The bayonetta 2 trailer actually made me less excited for that game, and the female voice-actress in the X clip drove me insane.
watching the direct made me think are nintendo even aware they have a problem with the wii u ? do they even care ! when you think how long it has been out and the poor game support for it you think they would have some actual NEWS .
@alistairstrogg I think they dont have anything to show right now - maybe it's a good strategy actually, since the slow drip-drip of games so far has failed to sell a lot of machines. Maybe they are gearing up for a knock-out, which is sorely needed - one can hope
@warbeard , that's nintendos' luck really as nintendo fans are a very patient/tolerant and hopeful set of people. To much emphasis on the 3ds for me.
@Warbeard Actually yes they did show new stuff
@alistairstrogg - I agree - also part of the reason they released the GBA VC on WII U I think.
I'm from Europe, so naturally I watched that direct, but just saw a bit of the one from America, and it's a lot better I think.
@Unca_Lz besides the submachine-thing and a new NES Remix?
Little Mac and GBA games are the only thing I cared for. Everything else had either been know about for a while or I don't care for it.
Thanks for the summary article, makes it easy to find everything, even if there isn't a lot for my tastes.
Mario Golf on May 2... my wallet might be safe until then though. Maybe Pokemon Trozei, or if we ever got any real release dates for those indy eshop titles.
@Warbeard Still new stuff
@Warbeard think it this way
Not every people know about all that is shown in direct. Of course I know because I am frequent reader but normal player will have no knowledge over these
But of course I really want to have new games announced and if can, Will fill gap before Mario kart
@Unca_Lz - touché
@divinelite That's true.
@2Sang lol I love your profile pic.
My 2 highlightes:
-Little Mac confirmed for Smash
-Some X Gameplay
That's it. The final DK trailer was nice too.
my fav. highlight was new info & trailer for Bayonetta 2! PlatinumGames.Inc RULE!! little mac for smash bros. & X gameplay were good too.
I went into the ND with expectations for Nintendo to underwhelm, even though this would have been a make or break ND. In a time when I would expect them to bring in their full force, it seems underwhelming still. The very little new stuff shown will not change people's attitudes towards Wii U and certainly not generate the much needed sales.
In all honesty, I didn't expect them to throw out any new retail games. Every direct can't throw in something new, so fans need to be conditioned to stop expecting ridiculous things.
Its great direct but after it i was just sorry for WiiU, nothing new (what we didnt already knew) and if that is all for WiiU, for this year, and looks that way shame ...
It's really sad that the first Nintendo Direct of 2013 brought us huge new announcements and the first one of 2014 brought nothing exciting to the table. Their main focus is on the 3DS which isn't a smart business move since the 3DS is having no problems selling. The amount of games coming to PS4/Xbone in 2014 compared to Wii U is such a huge gap. Come on Nintendo... I defended you the first year the console was out but now it's just sad.
I liked it....although I was disappointed they didn't have a late March early April item for Wii U......even Remix 2 being released earlier would have made the gap between DKTF & MK8 seem less lengthy. Overall though I enjoyed it.
I kind of think they are quiting on Wii U for this fiscal year in hopes of pushing bigger numbers from April on?
Sort of disappointed that X was going to use the Xenoblade gameplay... I'm sure it has its fans out there, so good for them. But that means I have to hope that a more traditional turn based rpg comes to Wii U. (How many I wonder were hoping for X to be more like Xenogears/Xenosaga? ) Then again, if X was like Xenosaga... there would be people in my position... disappointed that it wasn't Real Time. (Why can't Monolith be awesome and do what Fallout 3 did... allow for both.)
Maybe we could get a Golden Sun or Radiant Historia on WiiU ?
IMO it started out really strong with Little Mac's reveal then it went down hill from there, only to be lifted back up at the end
I can see why they didn't reveal a lot of new games, perhaps they weren't ready to be shown? I mean remember all the hate Hyrule Warriors got despite them being clear that a lot of things were going to be changed/improved, so I say, reveal when its ready, but hopefully in march
GBA titles being a WiiU-only thing is an awful idea in my opinion.
I'll warm up to the mere thought of a GBA VC on WiiU once it becomes available on 3DS as well.
@bloodycelt - I love turn based, but I still greatly enjoyed Xenoblade and I feel like those of us who prefer turn based are in the minority. I would love to see a Golden Sun though for Wii U.
I liked it because I kept my expectations at a modest level.
I enjoyed the direct but I've got to ask... Is there a single game coming out on Wii U in March or April? I'm sure there will be some Indie and VC releases but even the Indie games seem to be coming later...
It delivered, it was a nice Direct. I was expecting some big new game announcements, especially for Wii U and that 3 month drought between DKC: Tropical Freeze and MK8. 3DS once again filling with lot's of variety and cool games coming literally each week from now until May with Mario Golf and Kirby Triple Deluxe. I was kinda dissapointed that X still has that vague window release from 2014, and that still doesn't even have an official name. Bayonetta 2 same, but oh my god that new Bayo 2 trailer was AMAZING!
I've been reading that people are dissapointed that Wii U once again is going to have a big drought of games or huge gaps between 1st party games considering Wii U has any 3rd Party support anymore, but hey! There would be more Nintendo Directs coming and of course THE DAMN E3! When the all-might Zelda U would be finally revealed! It's not like we need to have a big retail game every 3 weeks, I'm still need to finish Wind Waker HD, New Super Mario Bros U, trying to 100% Super Mario 3D World and next week the awesome DKC: Tropical Freeze would arrive. Plus, I have like 4 or 5 Wii games that I haven't played yet! So yeah not complains here for that 3 month drought without big retail release. There's always something available already to play, lot's of great indie games on the eShop, Virtual Console stuff, etc.
What stuck w/ me - Kirby and Mario Golf both May 2nd. Does the 3DS have that many games they need to share a date?
Otherwise about what I expected.
whilst I liked the extra footage of the upcoming wii u games, from tropical freeze on 21st Feb to Mario Kart on the 30th May is a LOOOONG wait with no big releases. Verging on ridiculous really.
@Gerbwmu,
I do agree turn-based gamers are a minority, but I think a sizable minority. Pokemon, and Civilization both do very well in terms of sales. I hear Child of Light is turn-based and inspired by Grandia's battle system.
And yeah... they could fill the drought via high profile VC releases, I am surprised they haven't put up N64, or gotten Genesis/Neo-Geo back on there.
I wish I knew how much it really cost to put a VC title on the WiiU, because it seems like that should be their short term strategy... explode on that in between retail titles.
"The Little Mac reveal punched me in the heart." - MixMasterMudkip, Valentines Day 2014
@MixMasterMudkip
Aaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwww <3
I thought the Direct was quite solid. I loved the Little Mac reveal. His mechanics seem very interesting and I'm interested in Smash for the first time. I am an old-school fighting game fan but could never really get into Smash before.
I'm glad Inazuma Eleven arrived in North America and I love when they announce a game on Direct and it's available a few minutes later. I downloaded Inazuma despite being hooked on Bravely Default.
Mario Golf is looking good; I'm excited for Pokemon Trozei. X is looking amazing and Bayonetta 2 looks interesting. I was interested in NES Remix but I'll wait for the next title. GBA games on Wii u is pretty cool but 3DS would have been better. Still, the Retron 5 will be out soon so I don't know if I'm rebuying any of my massive GBA library.
The japanese Direct has some interesting stuff to show! You guys might wanna take a look at it as well.
I was very disappointed.no wiiu announcements until the 25 minute mark or so. The whole time I asked myself,ok when's the U news? They are building hype on U with 30 year old games.. I'm very disappointed..as a day one adopter Ill I can do is wait... And waiting is hard when your sitting on a 300$plus machine ,and your 3ds gets al the love
All the footage was great, but I found it disappointing in light of how bad the sales situation is. I already knew I was going to buy that stuff. I want the Wii U to take off, but clearly very few people are interested in it. If someone did not care about the Wii U before this direct, nothing changed to make them care about it now. I understand they're not going to reveal all their new games now with E3 four months away, but they have to do something. If they just trundle along until May/June, then it will be 7-8 straight months of being outsold by the PS4 and Xbone, and devs are going to completely stop bothering making Wii U games.
I completely agree they can not announce a big new game at every Direct, but this wasn't just any old Direct, it was the first one after terrible December sales, and one the biggest reduction in sales projections the industry has ever seen. Wii U is quite a bit behind the Gamecube in sales, and unlike the Cube, Nintendo are losing heaps of money on this console so this should have been a pull out all the stops Direct. I'd even say it's more important to make a splash now than at E3, because you can't let these sales continue til the last day of May when MK arrives.
@zeldagaymer93 Thing is, there's hardly anything decent coming to PS4/Xbox One in the first three quarters of the year bar indies, ports of games on PS3/360 and a handful (literally) of games. The Wii U only line up (as barren as it is) is the superior line up thus far. Problem is at E3 both Sony and Microsoft could announce amazing things out in the second half of the year while Nintendo, sadly, likely won't.
The Direct was great of you werent expecting a huge surprise. I loved the eshop announcements and footage of upcoming stuff like MH4, X and MK8.
My biggest complaint is MK8's release date. May 30?! That means there will only be two meaningful Wii U games in the first 6 months of 2014, which is just as awful for the console as 2013's first half. As someone who is currently looking to justify my decision to own a WiiU over a PS4, this isnt helping much. In fact, were it not for Smash Bros and X and the eventual Zelda WiiU game, i'd probably be trading it in by now.
The 3DS, on the other hand, keeps impressing. The eshop games coming look great and affordable, and stuff like Smash Bros, Mario Golf and Kirby TD look like a lot of fun. 3DS is my favorite gaming machine i've owned since the Gamecube/PS2 days.
As it was a direct focused on games releasing before the end of spring, i didn't expect any new retail games. So i enjoyed it, the ssb4 reveal was awesome, the 3ds section sucked and dragged, and then an awesome tropical freeze and mk 8 trailer to finish up. Nintendo will obviously be saving its reveals for e3 when the rest of the world, and not just Nintendo fans will be watching. I think its going to be like last year tbh, a sparse first half of the year and then a slightly packed holiday season. Nintendo are lucky that microsoft and sony's release schedule is only abit better.
Not bad at all!
Is it just me or have you missed the Wii Sports Club Wii U Bundle for Japan news?
Wow, japan is still on the better end! Here's what I (kinda) understood:
That stuff was interesting, sadly I could barely understand a thing. But some of that stuff was nice to look at.
The comment section here is extremely optimistic. Very unlike the rest of the internet regarding this Nintendo Direct.
For Wii U owners, it was pretty disappointing. Overall, it was great. However, the lack of attention given to the Wii U was very disheartening.
Decent Direct, it didn't disappoint, but it didn't knock my socks off either.
As for the game drought between DK and MK?
It's kind of a drag, but I urge you all to check out some upcoming indie titles like Shovel Knight, and for god's sake...get Wonderful 101 if you own a Wii U! Support and enjoy this masterpiece while it's still on store shelves since it's already been discounted and it will provide many hours of amazing, innovative gameplay.
Stop reading this and complaining about a game drought! I know like 5% of you bought Wonderful 101...so go...go...get it already!
@rjejr i thought the same thing i feel like they screw themselves in releasing the Games same day, even releasing then a week apart will Benefit them, this us the second time they release two games on the same day stupid imo
Still nothing on Dragon Quest VII making it west. Come on Square/Nintendo!!
I want GBA on the 3DS. (Might get Super Star Saga but that is all ever.)
Whereas I would probably get 80% or more (From the Japan list) if it was on the 3DS. (The reason might be 3DS games are not much better (And they are worse in terms of difficulty whereas GBA is still from the reasonable time) than GBA ones when it comes down to it but they cost much more).
Kirby looked pretty jerky to me. (When compared to the Wii one which I really liked). Yoshi's Island looked smooth by comparison. (Could have been the video I dunno).
PC Engine on 3DS would have made me happy as well.
@stephbm6 Suspect if it does it will be iOS only (Android in Japanese). Is the Playstation version on PSN ? I want it lots as well. (Not as much as the Super Famicom version of III though).
Or any of the other pure gold ones that were never translated from the best Square and Enix years.
Almost bought Attack of the friday monsters a couple weeks ago but decided to wait a bit, so was very pleased about the discount; bought it last night.
"Lots of games, few major surprises" my exact thoughts. Also don't wanna brag but I may be psychic since the moveset Little Mac has is the exact same moveset I thought up for him down to the counter move. Also when Iwata said that there would be new MK 8 racers you wouldn't expect the koopalings were the first thing to pop into my head. Yes I know what you're thinking impressive right? XD
I'm waiting for the day when Wii U news and announcements take up as much time or more than 3DS news in the Nintendo Direct. Wii U got like what? 10-15 minutes out of a one-hour presentation?
Again i'll echo what others have said by saying how daft it is to have GBA games coming to the Wii U and not GBA. Granted they're trying to get more sales but most won't care and it won't do much for sales. While there are some indie titles coming to the Wii U, there's two major releases between now and end of May and will only be of any interest to the many who own the console but have no internet connection. X reminds me of crisis core's mechanics and Bayonetta 2 looks like it'll be great fun.
In a way, i'm disappointed because they've had all this time yet nothing new has been announced bar the new smash bros character. Again people are still wondering where the account based system is and it really is looking like flipnote 3d has well and truly been canned in the west which is a massive shame. It seems like they haven't done much but we all know this part of the year is quiet so i'm hoping that's the reason.
I'm not buying GBA games on my Wii U. Period.
I am very excited for Superstar Saga being a downloadable game on the Wii U and I already download the new Steel Diver game (I haven't played the first game in the series) and see what the fuss is about.
I hope people give it a chance, it did seem fun for the half hour that I played of it; a bit slow, but that's to be expected from submarines, right?
Not much going on there really. Over 3 months between major releases is very poor at the best of times let alone when your console is struggling. X looks great but the lack of any kind of date is worrying. It's astonishing that such a major developer is so far behind with development for their own console. They must have known years ago the Wii U was going to be HD and should have been preparing accordingly.
GBA games on Wii U is strange. This was the perfect opportunity to launch a working Account system with Cross Buy for GBA games on both 3DS and Wii U but Nintendo prefer to keep on gouging long-term fans with this scattershot approach. Also, still no N64 games. The VC is a mess and I'm losing patience.
There was a direct yesterday?
I'm lucky enough to have watched the NA Direct on their YouTube channel so I had no problems at all.
I was quite pleased with the Direct. I enjoyed the Little Mac reveal right off the bat, and how they finally showed new updates and game footage for both X and Bayonetta 2, plus MK8 and Mario Golf. It may have seemed a little all over the place, but I think they really tried to put something for everyone in it.
As a Wii U owner (not a 3DS owner), I wasn't at all excited or impressed by that. Granted, the streaming issues didn't help - and they need to look into that for future broadcasts - but it didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know. OK, there was another NES remix, which shows Nintendo are pretty much desperate to get anything out for the Wii U right now, but that was it.
A broadcast like that should be a monthly, predictable, affair, not something following a two month silence. The 24 hour notice thing worked well to build hype when these first started but now it's just tiresome. I honestly didn't expect much from this, so I wasn't disappointed, but I think in future Nintendo should schedule a regular date for these and then maybe pull the 24 hour trick to hype something exceptional.
I liked the X & Bayonetta2 trailers and that, I was hoping for a release date for Bayonetta2 but it wasn't to be. I agree with some other that the 3DS seems to be getting more focus, I thought more focus would have been on the Wii U this direct but hopefully next time.
I was pretty dissapointed. Nothing new about 3DS, not only one thing...
@Peach64 Spot on. They're putting a lot of trust and faith in Mario Kart and SSB right now. Frankly, I think we need a Bayonetta 2 level surprise.
Why on earth doesn't NoE have a Youtube channel to put their stream on? They are freakin useless!
I also agree with others that GBA games on Wii U seems an odd fit compared to 3DS. I think they've done that as the Wii U lineup is looking a bit sparse.
Seems like they've been using the same content over and over again in these Directs since the beginning. It just goes to show how incredibly sparse and non-existent their line-up is/will always be. I'm sooo glad i never bought a WiiU.
All i've been waiting for with the past 10 of these things is a SMT IV release date. Why must they continually ignore this game?
My problem with this ND was that i believed there wouldnt be another big gap between great releases, so i expected them to anounce some stuff for march and april to fill the space between DK and kart. Turns up march will be indie only and april will depend on VC GBA until nes remix and child of light come at the end of that month. On top of that, may will be likewise until 30th.
But what they DID show was kinda awesome. Im just sad the whole semester comes down to only MK (in terms of big retail games)
Thank goodness for the YouTube alternative (in the US). Nintendo needs to fire Ustream.
As for the content of the Direct, I thought it was great. I don't understand the negativity. Oh well. Can't make everyone happy, I guess.
I was pretty pleased. They announced when GBA games would show up. Showed more "X" footage. Just wish they would have a release date for it.
There were a few neat tidbits of info for already released games, but aside from that, it was disappointing. They need to start giving people reasons to buy a Wii U now, people are starting to lose interest.
Nothing really new, I liked the look of X and Bayonetta 2. Not sure about GBA games on the Wii U VC, if I want GBA games on the big screen all I need is the game boy player for my old Cube. Hopefully at some point Nintendo will transfer the Wii VC across to the Wii U, and downloads linked to your account not to the hardware. Like I said I like to be hopefull
This gave no incentive for someone to invest in the WiiU. The only unannounced game is a sequel to NES Remix, hardly a system seller. The potential for the WiiU is dwindling lower and lower, to the point where it almost seems Nintendo has given up on the system. One thing is for sure, they Cannot skip the E3 press conference this year if they want any hope of the WiiU not failing completely. They have to utterly knock it out of the park at E3, or else the console truly is doomed. Publishers are pulling support left and right, and so far there's only been 5 first party games announced for this year, with only 2 having firm release dates, one of which is coming next week. If Zelda does not come this year, I fear the WiiU will be too far gone for even that to save it. There's no hype for the system anymore, and the deeper the perception is that the system is a failure, the more likely it will become one.
Nintendo needed to blow us away with this one, turn that negative perception around, and show what potential the future has in store for the WiiU. This direct did none of that.
@Assassinated Zelda will sell Wii U's no matter what. Out of my friends / family who have grown out of games the only one they care about is Zelda and they will buy it and whatever system it needs day one period. (At RRP).
I think Nintendo expect Wii u owners to have a 3ds. That way there should always be a game to play.
May and Mario Kart 8 is not that far away if you have Mario golf and Yoshi to play while waiting.
It was a really good direct. Showing the trailer and release date of MK8 was fun, and the X gameplay trailer and the Bayonetta 2 trailer were awesome.
Oh, speaking of release dates, how insulting was it that Kirby Triple Deluxe isn't going to be released until May. Japan already has the game and we have to wait an extra 4 months. WTF Nintendo, why are you making us wait so long for a core franchise to be localized?
@Bolt_Strike I suppose we will see depending on how many copies are sold Japan verses elsewhere.
@unrandomsam Yup,I bought a wii day one for twilight princess.I waited outside a target for six hours on launch day. When Zelda hits the u it's all I'll be playing until its beat.
@rastamadeus Not including indies the Wii U has Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Smash, X, Bayonetta, Watch Dogs, and Hyrule Warriors slated to release this year.
Playstation 4 has Watch Dogs, Infamous, Drive Club, The Witcher 3, Game of Thrones Telltale, The Order 1886, Metal Gear Solid 5, Deep Down, Dying Light, Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor and maybe Uncharted. So far... To say Wii U has a stronger lineup is hilarious.
@Assassinated Some of your points are a little harsh and exaggerated but for the most part I agree with you. I have been defending Nintendo and the Wii U for so long now but after yesterdays Direct and looking at the 2014 Wii U line up compared to PS4... It's really sad that Nintendo didn't surprise us with something. Most of the Direct was focused on the 3DS which isn't a smart business decision since the 3DS is already selling and already has many great games.
I have to say I was disappointed with yesterday as well. I think if they are out to fix the Wii U problem, they didn't do a very good job. I will agree it was heavy on 3DS. Of course, Nintendo did say to the shareholders that 3DS was going to drive profits. Honestly, I think that entire direct was for the benefit of the shareholders.
If they truly do want to turn the fortunes of the Wii U arouond, I would suggest they blow everyone's doors off at the E3. If they are not working on multiple first party games they better start. Don't get me wrong, I love the Wii U. I will continue to buy first party, and it will be my go to console for all the family games. However, it would be nice for others to jump on board.
Would have been nice to see more Wii U and less 3DS, but overall not too disappointed, just got my Wii U for Christmas, have 12 games so far (gotta love ebay) but I've mostly just played 3 or 4 of them so I still have plenty to get to, not to mention several other titles I still need to buy... DK:TF sure is looking pretty I might add...
@zeldagaymer93 Three of those are exclusives (one of which almost NO-ONE will buy as it'll be free with PS+) and the rest will be available on other consoles and in a few cases older consoles. So my point still stands. Thanks for helping prove it though. By the way, I own a PS4 (turning it on for the third time in two and a half months today) and don't have a Wii U.
is the lag gone yet?
I think the issue is Nintendo's development teams are stretched way to thin.Id imagine that developing hd games is new for Nintendo, and I'm sure much more work is needed to make a wii u game versus a wii game.So it seems they are understaffed and trying to juggle wiiu&3ds with little to no third party support on the u to fill in the gaps. They are in a tight spot no doubt about it.Will Mario kart 8 push enough units to turn this around. Will people holding off on the system change their mind once smash bros is out?Do nintendo's first party games have enough pull to fix things like in previous generations? The wii had some great hardcore games like mad world that got great reviews, but didn't sell well,so will the same be said for games like Bayonetta or x?Bayo looks great but do games like that or devil may cry have a wide enough audience to make a difference?Zeldagaymer93 showed a comparison between upcoming games on ps4&wiiu and it doesnt look good.Any early advantage wiiu had is long gone,so let's hope big n has more in store at e3.On a lighter note I'll be getting tropical freeze next week so keep the games coming Nintendo.
Meh. It was alright. Kind of lacking in the surprise category as we already knew most of this information already. Mario Kart 8 was the only big Wii U game that had a launch date. No "release windows" for any other games such as Bayonetta 2, Super Smash Bros. and X. On the other hand I liked that GameBoy Advance games are finally coming to Wii U but I would like to see some Pokemon titles finally come over to the VC for Wii U or 3DS. The future of the Wii U looks bright. However when is that future going to happen?
Y is bayonetta taking so long!!? It was shown like in 2012 wasnt it? They really need to get on the ball with wiiU. The focus on the 3ds is upseting me now
I'm surprised the Koopa Kids aren't in Smash.
@rastamadeus The point is most of the games are coming to PS4/Xbone (and yes a few to PS3/360) but none of them are coming to Wii U or Wii. Yeah Nintendo has a few really good exclusives coming out this year. But it's not enough to win people over. And the fact that PS4 sales have almost caught up to Wii U shows that.
And I own a Wii U and PS4. So I can tell you the Wii U is pretty barren.
@zeldagaymer93 I wasn't dismissing that just saying the Wii U exclusives are much better than the other two consoles have at the moment and for the rest of the year. My PS4 at the moment is just a paperweight. The Wii U at least has games on it. I know ten people with a Wii U, none regret the purchase. I know six with a PS4 and none are truly impressed yet. The one guy I know with an Xbox One loves it but he supports Man U so what does he know about anything? The Wii U is struggling badly, we all know that, but at least it has stuff (dripping slowly) coming whereas the supposedly next gen machines have long barren months ahead, third party support or not.
@TruenoGT I don't know why a 3ds would lack enough power to effectively run 16-bit games. No I'm not a tech guy,but with games like resident evil revelations that look console quality I'd think 3ds is at the very least on par with the wii and that system emulated 8,16,64 bit roms no problem.
Heh, My 3ds is getting spoiled. Tis a shame the WiiU doesn't get this much attention this direct especially since this console's days are cloudier and cloudier by the day. Come Nintendo if not WiiU retail releases, how about patches and updates for the little console that could.
@AlexSora89 That's pretty stupid TBH. You will only warm up to it when GBA titles are on 3DS? Then what's the point of buying them on Wii U? Would you rather them NOT bring GBA titles to either Virtual Console?
More crappy looking kiddie games for 3DS... My cash will be going towards Wii U indie and 1st/3rd party games again this year
Pretty abysmal installment. Nintendo know the Wii U is in trouble but, after Donkey Kong, there are no major first party titles coming out until May.
Mario 3D World was not a system seller, DK certainly won't be. X and Bayonetta out "sometime in 2014". Not good enough.
I thought the direct was okay, wasn't superb but was okay in terms of seeing things. I guess I'm wondering what else will be coming along via some other third parties.
i liked it but i agree with everyone else who is wondering why we'll have ANOTHER wii u draught on our hands. i'm passing on dk. so from nov of 2013 to may of 2014 i have no new content to play on the console. aside from a gba vc release or 2 and nes remix 2. i thought they would touch on discounts or whatever they referred to for their loyal fans. as someone whos filled up their 3ds's 16gb sd card and a nice chunk of my 500gb external harddrive for wii u i was interested to know whats what. ppl may not be flocking to the wii u but i love the machine and my wallet is BEGGING to be opened!
Little Mac's reveal, the free-to-play Steel Diver Sub Wars, and the Koopalings being in MK8 were the highlights for me. Fairly good Direct overall, nice to know what's definitely coming soon.
Hard to say if I am disappointed as I have got lots of Wii-U games that are worthy of my attention, however if Nintendo announced F-Zero yesterday everyone would have stood up to take notice. I'm hoping that MK8 will feature retro tracks!
Also dare I say it Nintendo or Mario rather, celebrates 30 Years next year! I totally trust Nintendo that they will keep Wii-U alive.
Hey people, think for a moment. I'm sure all of you noticed how there's only two major Wii U games out in the first half of 2014, while the 3DS is getting a ton of games. You guys are frustrated and disappointed, right?
Well, take a look at the 2nd half of 2014 and you might be surprised. The 3DS only has two major games lined up: Smash Bros and Sonic Boom in North America/Europe (with Japan getting Monster Hunter 4G over Sonic), while the Wii U has tons of games lined up. The Wii U has Smash Bros, Bayonetta 2, Sonic Boom, Hyrule Warriors, and Monolith Soft's X all lined up for the 2nd half of 2014.
I just wanted more news on Mario Golf WT, I got that and more so I'm satisfied. Sorry I sound like a broken record when it comes to the game, but I love the Mario Golf series and the new game really has me excited.
Gotta love how people scream dissapointment when nintendo said before the direct even aired that it would only cover stuff to be released in spring. And really complaining about a game drought. Boo hoo. Have you got nothing better to do with your life then sit in front of a tv playing games every month of the year?
@boynerdrambling Say that to anyone who works as a gaming journalist for a major website or magazine.
If its any consolation Europe, I started watching halfway through and had to go back to youtube too. I was so ticked lol.
Guess I'm only one who not happy with 3ds from direct? Only Kirby and Mario golf and slew of indie
On the other hand vita got Tokiden danganroppa Ffxhd project diva demon gaze conception deception Sly collection God of war hd Borderlands 2 until may
I mean I love Bravely default but after that... I don't have anything to play on 3ds until dunno when
@boynerdrambling 2 game over 6 months is a drought. Face it. I do work so my play time is very limited but I really want to play to
I still cannot justify a reason for wii u yet, but well maybe e3 can? If ps4 is re-hyping again in e3 instead... I'll just buy that then
I thought it was a good Direct. I still don't expect it to sell Wii U units, but I'm happy that they have these games coming out.
I'm just glad we have a date for Kirby Triple Deluxe and Mario Kart 8. Can't wait for May to finally roll around.
Little Mac's looking pretty cool too!
This Nintendo direct was disappointing. Sorry, but only two Wii u retail releases for the first six months of 2014 just doesn't cut it. That's what you call a gaming drought. The Wii U is struggling for games and GBA games aren't what is needed. It's great that there are some awesome Indie games coming out but these games should enhance Wii U retail releases not supplement them. And as for Mario Kart coming out at the end of May, it needed to be released earlier.
I thought it was a good direct. The only thing I wish was that they had games for next year, or at least some third party we don't already know, because the Wii U looks pretty barren after these games come out this year. I guess they are saving what they have for E3
Why is Capcom taking so long for a US release? By the time it gets here Japan will have moved on to another game. Should have been a world wide release.
Bayonetta looks as messy as Wonderful 101. Ick. Would prefer to play Metroid Fusion on my 3DS, but it is what it is. I WILL have it either way. Peppy caught my attention immediately. WHAT A TEASER!!! Will have to look into the game, but I'm not into Pay as you Play, unless of course it's Moon Chronicles. THAT looks like fun!
It was mostly 3DS stuff. Since i don't have a 3DS there wasn't much for me.
@unrandomsam Of course Zelda will sell systems, but if it comes too late, it may be too late to save the system. I no longer feel as though Mario Kart and Smash Bros can turn the system's fortunes around, and while Zelda potentially could, it has to come before the WiiU is given up on (by the general populace) as a lost cause.
Was kinda hoping for some DragonQuest stuff. Maybe at E3 then.
When it's DS, and now GBA games, coming to the Wii U Virtual Console, and NOT the 3DS one, something's SERIOUSLY wrong with Nintendo.
Aside from the free Steel Diver sequel, and full online multiplayer that came with it, the rest of the announcements were absolute CRAP.
GIVE US A DATE FOR THE NEXT SMASH BROS. GAME!!!
Calm down people, we all knew what was going to be on the ND.
E3 is when Nintendo is gonna pull the big guns, right...RIGHT??? I mean, they have to.
Disappointing. Can't believe I watched it live.
The new X footage has actually dissuaded me from buying it. X doesn't look interesting to me now.
No Metroid, no starfox, no fzero.
Out of desperation I can say the moon game for 3ds seemed of interest.
@Senario - Perfectly stated.
" People need to stop concerning themselves with the Wii Us state and just play the dang games."
This is a symptom of what Microsoft, EA, Call of Duty and it's clones, and Hollywood have done to ruin much of what used to be great about gaming.
In the past, games came out, you bought them, you played them, you read about them in magazines, and you heard about them from friends and family. Budgets weren't bloated, development cycles were shorter, and you didn't have every doofus on the internet pretending to be a market analyst.
In the past, great games were made and they lasted for the life of a console, now we soak up months(sometimes years) of hype, argue over which paid-off hipster reviewers gave it the score we wanted, and then refuse to buy the game or entertain it's existence a month after it's release.
Call me old fashioned or whatever...but I'm so tired of these day-by-day, minute-by minute financial analysis and super whiny entitled gamers expecting every new announcement to live up to the daily diet of empty hype they eagerly allow to be forced down their throats.
@Action51 Yeah, this industry wide problem only reared its ugly head with the birth of the PSBOX fanboy and internet site clickbait traffic advert payment subsidiary... Also forgot about the typical run-of-the-mill two-faced western company CEO ↓
Gba vc? On wiiu but not 3ds? And still no n64,megadrive,dreamcast,neo geo or gamecube vc! COME ON NINTENDO! What the eff man! I mean ok,it'l be "nice" to play gba games again, but on wiiu? 8th gen super hd hardware and the best you can give me is gba games and a new eshop game featuring nearly 30year old nes games?!
Serious question: Do you think nintendo are professional trolls?
I was a bit let down with it, the stuff they showed was great but the emphasis was really on 3DS announcements which is doing fine sales wise I really thought they would have begun the wii u hype train early this year. I wanted some eshop games to get reveals such as Fast Racing Neo (though that's obviously not Nintendos fault it didn't). Hyrule Warriors would have been nice to see again over more Donkey Kong, GBA games are all well and good coming to the Virtual Console, but no official DS announcement was a missed opportunity. On the topic of VC, Japan has had releases for other systems such as PC engine games, is the rest of the world getting these? Lots of answers could have been given to lots of questions but instead as far as Wii U went we got the same games, different day; which doesn't really set the year up for being a great one quite like last years did.
@Action51 Could not agree more mate. I think the reason I loved gaming so much in the 90's,and why gaming feels tired and stale, is because of the internet. Too much exposure before the game is actually out. I mean think about it. Bythe time smash is released we will know pretty much 90% of the entire game. Imagine if 1 trailer was released then nothing till the game was released. How awesome would it be to discover little mac is in the game,or this new mode or that new feature. Its why people rate ff so highly. We had mag screenshots before the game was released and that was it. And it became amazing finding out the story yourselve rather than being spoonfed trailer after trailer after spoiler filled trailer! The internet sucks!
All you need to know about the current state of Wii U right now is that it took up less than half of a 40 minute Direct that focused on Spring 2014 line up, and half of THAT time was spent talking about 2 games not even launching in Spring (2 games that we've also all known about for over a year). Unbelievable, the Wii U situation. Nintendo deserves every ounce of crap they're receiving for this fumble of a console. At this rate, comparing it to the GCN is simply doing that console a disservice.
This is poor. Nothing in the first two months, retail or virtual console, except for donkey kong? They are now lauding titles such as Mariokart, smash and X? That are not system sellers, they are guaranteed hits with Nintendo fans, don't get me wrong, by these games do not compete in the mass market. They are supporting titles, subsidiaries that feature cross franchise party play, they are not the main pedigree stable titles that characters headline.
Nintendo need to only mention:
Zelda 9, F-Zero 4, New Metroid or Mario Galaxy 3 and that will show the gaming world that Nintendo are serious about drawing in gamers. Just dishing out the party titles is appalling. Nintendo are almost half way into ther second year with Wii U and nobody has heard of a single top draw first party game even being made, apart from Zelda getting mentioned every once in a while over the last 4 years. That Zelda Wii u tech demo turned heads. To not follow up with that by now is ludicrous. If Nintendo get as far as E3? And haven't announced a real first party game blockbuster then they're done with no way to come back, they can't make another 12 months trying to pass of second string games to a market that want to see the big guns.
@stephbm6 You mean come on ENIX/Nintendo! jeez i'm a nitpicker
@gatorboi352
Should I throw my Wii U in the trash, or just unplug it and stick it in the back of my closet? Must I stop enjoying the games on it, delete all my Miiverse posts, and stop looking forward to any upcoming games?
Am I allowed to say I had fun with it, or must I retroactively denounce any enjoyment the console and games have brought me?
I am so glad you are here to chime in on every article with the same generic, negative, comments. I was enjoying my console purchase and the many hours of gaming...but you have pointed out that this one marketing video only devotes twenty of forty minutes to a console, and that means everything is bad and we should feel bad.
Still no Zelda Wii U info means 2015 or a spectacular holiday 2014 surprise. Probably the former, I'm sure Hyrule Warriors is there to bridge the gap this year.
Anyway, Bayonetta, DK and MK8 look amazing. I just hope they have something unannounced for March-April but I think its already too late for that, they would've used this ND to reveal it. (especially with the NDs focus on spring releases)
Edit: Why for the love of cookies are there hardly any worthwhile VC releases?! I just don't understand...There are lots of SNES and N64 games I would love to play on my Wii U. (Oh and DS VC this year would be swell, easy way to fill in the gaps...)
I was really hoping for some sort of suprise or surprises for the wii u due to the fact that the wii u is in dire straights right now but alas we got nothing. I love nintendo and i know the wii u has the potential to be a commercial success but releasing two games in the first 6 months just ain't gonna get you there. Lack of games, lack of third party support and minimal advertising are really hurting the system. I understand the bigger games are slated for later in the year but doesn't this seem to be more counterproductive than anything? Nintendo knows the wii u is doing really bad but it seems the emphasis was on 3ds more than anything. I don't mean to sound like a pessimistic cantankerous fanboy or anything, let's just hope the latter part of the year yields better results in the software department for the wiu u than the former.
@Action51 : thank you! This gatorboi user is one nasty dude. He drilled me on the forums a few times. Otherwise, I'd like to see Nintendo fill in some gaps between games. Either VC, DS or GBA are all good. But what about Bayonetta 1 or RE:4 PC Edition, RE 5 or 6, or Batman Arkham Asylum. Dropping these games on the eshop with slight tweaks would be great, and would fill any gaps. The PS4 and Xbox one are doing the same thing, so why not Nintendo?
@Cyberbotv2 :
Yup, people like him are just negative and want to stir up resentment and ill-will. Usually the response then is they play the victim and say "Why can't I have my opinion, you're just a nintendrone...".
Of course the difference is what you did. Obviously you weren't thrilled with the direct, but you explain why and your criticism is constructive, where Gatorboi guy is just hating and tossing around general doom and gloom without having anything to add to the conversation.
I'd love to see Bayonetta 1 come to the E-shop...but there may be licensing concerns we aren't aware of, and Platinum and Nintendo's relationship is pretty low key and they don't come out and talk about other projects much. Oh well.
I am both hoping for and predicting Mario Party 10 at E3 2014.
Well the good news is all the footage for WiiU looks really great. SSB X,MK8,B2,DKTR all look just amazing and shouid put to rest fears that WiU can't produce some nearly next gen looking games. The bad news is Nintendo just can't seem to ramp up WiiU with a steady flow of titles that it so badly needs and they just seem to blow one opportunity after another to make a splash, to suprise, or delight us. So many people didn't even mention Chiod of Light but that is my most anicipated title until X or SMTxFE. I think it is an important title because it is Ubi doing a smaller scale game with digital only release.....if it goes well it could mean more projects like that from majors which could be a new model that produces quality results. I think we have to look at the long term with Nintendo and understand they are just cutting their teeth in HD with WiiU. Iwata's recent comments on Nintrndo migrating to a universal development platform (like ios, android) is the right move and they are also expanding their teams and looking to aquire new/other dev teams. I think by 2015 all this ramping up will start to be evident.
If only there's Yoshi Island for SNES VC, that'll be great, but I don't want in GBA version personally. Not a wise decision.
