sure, but it was beside the point of my OG post entirely. I personally dont care to circumvent the block function nor do I care to discuss it here. If y'all want to talk about that, please make another thread for it and hold your breath it doesn't get locked.

I agree that this is an open forum, not social media, and I don't like the block function itself either, for the reasons you say. ✌️

There actually is a thread both on that topic and your topic with almost 500 replies. Part of the reason I was surprised when this thread got temporarily locked for saying things that were discussed a lot in the other thread.

In that other thread there was a lot of discussion about how some people treat this like a social media site and that might relate to their use of the block button. So it did seem somewhat relevant to your thread.

Generally this thread has been less heated and more polite which is nice.

What if instead of hiding their posts a block just removed the reply and quote buttons. If it did that I would have far less of an issue because clearly the only reason to do it is to say you don't wish to engage with that person. Hell, make this a function of the ignore and don't have two tiers at all!

That honestly a great idea. That way you can still follow the conversation.

@Tasuki

I agree! @skywake 's idea is a really good one, and would be a much better system than what we've got.

@FishyS @-wc- I think that's what the biggest problem with this ignore/block feature. It's that that's a feature for social media sites like Facebook or Twitter and this is not that but for some reason the staff here feels that it is.

You guys do know you don’t need those buttons to reply and quote… right?

They’re just shortcuts, not the function itself.

I just don't really see the need for block, when Ignore does the same thing as a block- aside from blocking members from seeing your messages.

@Eel
Of course, but if the intent of this feature is to make it harder for the other person to interact with you then why not just remove those shortcuts? I mean sure, you can just type them out but by removing the shortcut you're just adding a bit more friction. They can get around it if they want but if you're not seeing their replies anyways who cares?

I mean if your argument is that removing the reply/quote shortcuts is not a good idea purely on the basis that the target would be able to easily circumvent this restriction then......

@skywake I mean, a few of the blocked people already get a bit obsessed about it as is, the moment they do notice the other person still exists.

Now imagine if they could still see every post, but with a glaring badge of “you’re the problem”/“don’t talk to me” invisibly taunting them.

I know of at least one user who would take every opportunity to reply to the people blocking them, like a digital Don Quijote.

And no, I won’t say who 😉

@Eel I mean... you could reply but the other person wouldn't see your reply. And this is already possible anyways. Not having a button to press seems less intrusive then receiving a ping from NL saying there is a new response and then looking and seeing nothingness.

Ha! That was going to be my thoughts on the matter. Replying to someone who has you on ignore then wondering why they have not replied.
But I saw that as more of a devil's advocate comment.
One way or doing it would be a to replace the blocked / ignored post with an option to view it?

Just discovered a second user who has me blocked.

Almost positive I've never even talked to them ever before (didn't even really recognize the username) so it's no big loss, but it also makes it all the more confusing, lol.

I don’t think anyone has really blocked me except for one person, but I don’t know if it’s the site bugging or something. The weird thing is, I never interacted with the person that possibly blocked me. I think he did block me because his comments and posts don’t show up on my end but appear when I’m logged out. There isn’t a way to check if someone has put you on their ignore list or not.

I don’t particularly care, but I’m confused and wonder what was his reason for doing it. Was it something I said that he quietly disagreed with? Am I sometimes too negative? Does he not like my game tastes? I don’t know his reason and never will, but I feel it’s the latter, since prior to making an account in this site, I read that he said he dislikes mature games (or games with inappropriate content) and my most favorite game is aimed towards older audiences. His opinion I absolutely respect and can understand, and I even don’t disagree with it despite playing mature games. It’s fine if someone can’t handle stronger material or prefer to see none of it. I did rate some kid games a bit lower on my game collection actually, so that maybe has something to do with it.

However, it sort of hurts me for some reason… I don’t know why since I don’t even know the person personally, but I think it’s because I don’t like giving people bad impressions or arguing with others. I like to get social on this site and want to talk to everyone and hold conversations with them on pretty much anything.

Whenever I see a comment or opinion on Nintendo Life or any of their sister sites that I might disagree with, I still respect them in the end and just keep on scrolling. It’s only happened once, but if I do state an opinion that someone disagrees with and responds to, we have civil and respectful discussion about it. There was this pretty ignorant opinion I made on game emulation weeks ago that someone disagreed with and replied to with some rebuttals, but it never culminated in anyone arguing or getting ignored, and I thought the person who replied to me brought up good points and widened my perspective a bit.

I never press the ignore button because I like to hear opinions from each side and hearing what everyone is up to. I feel it doesn’t make sense for me to do it, but when someone does it to me, it makes me feel bad, like I did something wrong. I probably need to be understanding with the possible reasons about it.

@Pastellioli Ahhh the person you got blocked by is someone who tends to block most users for no real reason. Got blocked by them a while back as well. Probably because my PFP is from an M rated game or something.

"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."

Pastellioli

@VoidofLight That’s strange, because a lot of people seem to have been blocked by him because they argued with him and he heavily disagreed with their opinions. I still think he did block me because he likely noticed that I really like an M-rated game that I mention almost everywhere on forum discussions and me rating some more family-friendly games lower than it. I think the family-friendly games I rated are actually ones he mentions too and likes a lot, so maybe he did disagree with me and that’s fine. Though I did rate other family-friendly games higher than the M-rated game, and I should add that I don’t really play M-rated games, and that game I like a lot is pretty much one of the few exceptions. I just really like the game a lot because it had an important message I connected with and because I was going through a difficult time, so the intentional stupidity of the game helped a lot.

Oh well. There isn’t anything I can do about it unfortunately. I still wouldn’t have minded talking to him as he was nice and friendly but I think at this point I never will.

@Pastellioli If we got a dollar every time we worried about what issues others may or may not have with us, it might be worth doing. But we don't, so it's not. Their issues are mostly outside of our bounds of control, so best to just let go...

You guys had me at blood and semen.

@gcunit Yeah, maybe I should. I’m getting into it too much. I have a bad tendency to latch onto small things that bother me, and when I think about them a lot, I can’t stop going on about it and worrying, but it just makes me feel worse the more I do it, which doesn’t help since I have bad self-esteem. If the person feels better blocking me, then that is fine, because I do hate bothering people in some way or making them uncomfortable. Thank you for telling me.

@Pastellioli

Hey, you are in good company, here! I made this thread because I was feeling similarly, and user @gcunit and others here were quick to offer soothing words and advice to help me through it 😊 I am apparently blocked by a few users, one of which I am acutely aware of the offending conversation, another I know who they are but I have no idea what I did to offend or annoy. I do miss them both, and they arent the only ones 😬 though I don't know who the others are exactly.

it feels a bit like a mini break up, and when I see other users' replies to these people, it is a little bit like seeing your ex at the food court hanging with new (or old) friends. 😂

anyway, I really like what you said:

"If the person feels better blocking me, then that is fine, because I do hate bothering people in some way or making them uncomfortable."

this is wise, ai think, and it helps me further process what happened. I sometimes can be opinionated, here, and I don't usually back down if I know I have facts on my side or someone is violating my sensibilities, but I've been more careful to not alienate others either directly or indirectly, in hopes that I don't collect more ghosts around here. 👍

anyway, thanks for joining the conversation ✌️
