Following on from the render spotted within the source code on the European Nintendo website, Nintendo has now revealed Version 3.0 of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will arrive in the US today on 17th April and tomorrow in the UK on 18th April. Alongside this update is the release of Joker, the first paid DLC fighter. You can find everything you need to know about this Persona 5 character in the above video.
Apart from Joker's release, the free Version 3.0 update will include the previously rumoured Stage Builder mode, a video editor and Smash World - a new service in the Nintendo Switch Online app. Below are the full details, directly from the press release:
Stage Builder: Players with big ideas for a personalized Super Smash Bros. Ultimate stage can let their creativity run wild with the new Stage Builder mode. By using in-game tools, players can add moving platforms, spinning traps and other unique features to their customized stages. By playing in Handheld mode, budding designers can even use the touch screen to freely draw and create, and use front and back layers to further decorate their stages. Designed stages will be available to play in a new tab on the Stage Select screen and can be shared online via the new Smash World service for the Nintendo Switch Online app.
Video Editor: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate video content that has been saved to a Nintendo Switch system can now be spliced together into a fun timeline presentation. Subtitles and sound effects can also be added to personalize the video, which can be exported and shared with the world through the new Smash World service for the Nintendo Switch Online app.
Smash World: Players can view shared videos and download stages created in Stage Builder to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in Smash World, a new service in the Nintendo Switch Online app. In Smash World, players can view recommended videos and even download custom stages shared by others online, giving players more ways than ever before to share their Super Smash Bros. Ultimate experience with friends.
The first round of Mii Fighter costumes will also be released alongside Version 3.0. These costumes are based on Persona 5, Persona 4, Persona 3 and Sonic The Hedgehog. It's worth noting these costumes are not included with the Fighters Pass.
If you're interested in trying out Joker, the first Challenger Pack containing this fighter, the Mementos stage (see below) and 11 Persona music tracks can be purchased for $5.99 / £5.39. Alternatively, you can purchase a Fighters Pass for $24.99 / £22.49, which will give you access to this character and four other Challenger Packs. If you do end up purchasing the first pack, you'll receive a Joker route in Classic Mode and open up a special version of the Spirit Board.
Are you ready for Version 3.0? Have you purchased Joker's Challenger Pack? How about the Fighters Pass? Tell us down below.

Never saw that coming.
New stage builder looks good, can't wait to save other people's creativity. Surprised and pleased to see the P4 and P3 inclusions.
I can't wait to see what cool and creative stages people make with stage builder and the sharable miis!...... Y'all gonna see my Dexter!
Tomorrow can't come sooner! (I wonder if it'll be midnight release)
Ugh, I have classes tomorrow. Whhhhhy...
Joker on Wednesday and Cuphead on Thursday? Pretty nice week.
He has a Gun dudes, watch out.
Beyond excited, with this AND Cuphead this weekend is going to be so fun. Glad I just finished the messenger yesterday!! (Amazing game may I add)
I can still hope for Smash Run in a future update...that stage builder does look really good though!
This is a paid DlC, correct? Is there a way to buy just him?
I didn't see this coming, that's for sure.
Now I'm doubting the direct rumours even more
@MattFox Yep, for $6
@Octane Maybe you can practice on this before heading back into Dreams. 😂
@MasterJay Thanks! I was waiting on his release date to buy Smash seeing as he`ll be my new main, so now`s the time. Dragon`s Dogma and Final fantasy will have to wait a month.
The sharing through the app may be a way that Mario Maker will offer sharing. If only Labo VR garage had that!
I’ll tinker with this builder. But I’m still going to wait it out on the fighter pass.
Looks better than Wii U 😊 I wonder what other objects there are besides the ladders? They seem to not have revealed everything in this regards.
Stage Builder looks way better than previous iterations. Way better.
Cool, glad for the update but still not sold on the fighters pass just yet. Joker looks dope but I'm not a persona fan so it's not enough to get me to buy in yet. Stage builder sounds fun though.
They just basically made Super Smash Maker holy crap
AHHHHHHHHH, THE WHOLE P5 GANG IS HERE!!!!!!!
Im glad WE NEVER SAW IT COMIIIIING rather than an expected date of the Persona concert. It would have felt off and felt that they are excluding fans who wont/yet to play Persona. Im happy it wasnt so.
Joker is looking real good here. Looking forward to to this update.
Well, I was gonna play the splatfest this weekend...but uh...
Stage builder looks shockingly amazing!
His final smash and victorious results screen is perfect!
Sharing through the app, how wonderful... garbage.
The way they say 'April 17th' in that video makes me think this was originally supposed to be Nintendo Direct content. Hmm.
Well whatever the case, I'm excited! Joker looks great, Mementos looks great, Stage Builder looks great, video editor looks great... but whatever on the Mii Fighter costumes though. Can we actually get new costumes for characters we care about for once please?
Forget about Joker; the new Stage Builder is where it's at!
@Yosher I wouldnt blame you as we STILL dont know when that Starlink update is coming
This is pretty impressive!
@MattFox No one didn't really clarify this, Joker and his stage are paid DLC, $6 like someone has already said. Everything else is free.
Japanese Nintendo Twitter said the 18th in the morning (AM) for their release so probably 17th PM for the USA
Joker really looks like Cloud 2.0 just from the inclusion of the rebellion meter alone lol. I do like the inclusion of Persona music though and stage builder is looking a lot better than in Wii U
i really hope we get toon zelda as a dlc fighter
@Malcrash
But with everyone’s favorite super original move the counter!
I told you we would never see it coming.
@MattFox Can't remember if it's Best Buy or who was having a sale on Smash, but Cheapa$$gamer had mentioned it (it's down at the moment, so maybe some other site might mention the sale if you're in a rush).
Looks like a dress rehearsal for Super Mario Maker 2.
A solid update with quality free content! Really excited to see what they anticipate with the upgraded stage builder. Finally we can add some depth into our creations, going beyond standard layouts!
Not too excited about Joker. Though always more than appreciated to have more unique characters to choose from, but seeing I have 0 affinity with him or his games, and his gameplay doesn't baffle me, I don't think I'll use him much.
Great update, satisfied customer right here!
I bought the Fighters Pass months ago! If I’m correct on the time, midnight is just 1 minute away!
Have to say that Joker looked good. Also the fact we got music from 3 different games plus that the stage chances depending on the music is a nice touch. Still why do I get the feeling the next character for dlc will be announced and dropped at e3
ITS AN ENEMY STAND!
I love how we have music from different games one the Personal series. And it's cool with the Mii outfits!
....glares at Cloud and Square Enix
Still not my dream update which would include unlocking the whole My Music/Playlists to the entire game, but the editor and sharing features look nice, best part is that you can see all of them in the game itself, no need for the app.
@KingBowser86 I appreciate the info, but I live in another country. The best price I found here is about 75 US Dollars. If I would buy it at a retail store, in person, it would be 100 Us Dollars lol. I wont get into the politics of it, I`m just glad I have the money lol.
Everything looks great, but pretty upset the Mii Fighter costumes are not included in the fighter pass. I absolutely will not pay $0.75 per costume... why would they not include these with the pass?
Anyone else think Joker looks OP lol
Guess I'm playing smash all night tomorrow.
@MattFox Well, thought I'd try! Still might come in handy for anyone else that was waiting, too!
@Dayton311 Almost feels like nickel and diming tbh
@Dayton311 This. I did my part on the Wii U by buying Geno and Megaman.EXE in hopes of nudging Nintendo a bit ahead of this entry. And it looks like neither will happen.
I really hate to be this guy especially since I was giddy through every minute of Joker gameplay footage, but weren't we supposed to know about the next DLC fighter BEFORE Joker was released? I'm buying him first thing tomorrow, but I really thought we would have the 2nd DLC fighter revealed by now.
There's my Friday gone.
And the next two weeks...
@Dayton311 Exactly. They could've at least had a costume pass or something. They aren't worth buying individually.
@AshFoxX It will probably be one of their surprises at E3 this year.
good news- Joker will be awesome. Stage builder will be awesome. Music awesome.
bad news- There goes all hope for the April direct? The mii costumes cost extra??(- tbh I guess I don’t care as I intentionally never unlocked the mii fighters bc i feel like they kinda mess up the ultimate roster)
Not that excited about Joker (sorry not a big Persona fan, I'm more into the main series, not the spinoff) but the stage builder seems fun, I will be having a solid good times with that.
So it looks like it’ll release at 1am in the UK on April 18th if I’ve got my timezones correct...
That Stage builder and Share feature really gets me excited about Super Mario Maker.
@sanderev
That’s a really good point - we can assume it will have a similar share feature I suppose!
@SetupDisk
You didn't watch the video, right? 🙄
I'm happy with the music from the main 3 games!
The comment sections on any Smash-related Youtube video are so embarrassing. Here's my favorite gem:
"Thank you Mr. Sakurai!!!! You give us so much and we respect you so much for it! Please don't push yourself too hard. Thank you for this update, now please rest well. You deserve it and surely need it!"
The way Sakuraidolizers talk about the man (and heck, the way he talks about himself), you'd think that he was physically building these characters in a mine shaft, carving them out of stone with a butter knife.
The guy sits down at a laptop, writes a character treatment, then points at his developers and tells them to write lines of code.
@Joeynator3000 not everything else is free as you also have the MTX aka Mii costumes .75€ a piece...
Not interested in this particular character, so that's 1 out of 5 that I don't want. It would be nice to not have to wait until the 5 are announced in order to decide whether the fighers pass is worth it. I guess it'll be if you're interested in 4 characters, not so sure about 3. Anyway, I hope this one is the weakest of all planned.
A stagebuilder that isn't just a waste of everybody's time, you say?!
Color me intrigued!
And COME ON, what's with Joker's stage resembling a Break the Targets challenge to that degree, and just disappointing me?
@SetupDisk No, you can also share through the game itself. The app just gives you an alternate way to look up and share without booting up the game.
@Pod I know right? For the Smash Bros that has everything, Break the Targets and Board the Platforms is glaringly absent. Maybe in a free update? Be even crazier if they had unique setups for every character like on N64. It's a daunting task, but for the Ultimate Smash Bros, I'd expect no less.
@MattFox You can always buy the game digitally. Is the standard retail price on the eShop also that expensive in your country?
@AshFoxX They need to give us Event Matches before either of those two modes.
It's time to make history today
New hobby - building stages!
@Yosher I tought the same thing man... idgf to mii costumes, just give me alternate costumes for the characters I play.. just give me Peach tennis player, Peach kart driver costume...
@AshFoxX
I'm sure it will return eventually.
They can bust it out as an awareness re-ignition whenever they need one.
@Lizuka I have never played P5 (fingers crossed to April 25th) but I simply LOVE the OST... rivers in the desert is a blast.. but yes.. it makes no sense, they presented joker (when he was revealed) with life will change, didn't they??
I'm glad I decided to give Persona a try when I bought and played through Persona 3 a couple years ago, and blasted through Persona 5 after. I'm more in love with this Fighter Pack then I ever would've.
Now if only I could force myself to play Persona 4... I already spoiled myself on the story so I don't know if it's worth another 100 hours.
So no one can convince me now that P5 will not be coming to the switch. Its name checked so often its now a certainty. Would not be pushing a PS4 exclusive title so hard!
@rex_rex How would those costumes work with Peach floating through the air though? It already looks questionable with the dress. I mean what on earth, just because you wear a dress doesn't mean you can defy gravity!!?
But I wholeheartedly agree with new alternates >>> mii costumes
Those Mega Man skins were nice though. I wouldn't mind those back.
@MrBlacky
No I didn't have time earlier. Thank goodness Iwas wrong.
@TooBarFoo Let's hope that upcoming announcement next week about P5S translates to 'Persona 5 Switch'.
Also it has to be said. No new character reveal was a real bummer.
@ALinkToMyProfile I wasn't expecting the next character anyway. They probably want to focus all our hype and attention on Joker before they distract us with Fighter No.2.
@ALinkToMyProfile LOL! well, the driver costume we can't see her underwear (did u see some crazy Japanese taking pics of peach flying just to see her underwear?) but the tennis we still have this problem.. uahuahua!
man, I thought about megaman also (imagine a X alternate costume??)
@ALinkToMyProfile perhaps at E3 no??
The stage builder is bringing flashbacks of LBP stage builder. The textures and what not look the same.
I'm so bummed we still haven't heard anything official about a P5 port.
I want to play Persona!
GUYS, WE WILL BE ABLE TO CREATE AND SHARE OUR STAGES!! WE CAN PLAY INFINITE STAGES!!
THAT´S the news for me, not Joker... Joker doesn´t deserve to be is Smash until we get Persona 5 on Switch (if we ever do).
All about the Stage Builder mode is much more importante news imo, but it´s not even mentioned in the news title... How is that possible??
The Joker DLC looks SO good. Love the nods to P3 and P4 too! Love that they've incorporated so much of the style from Persona 5 into his smash and victory screens - surely a strong sign that we're getting a port before too long? Wonder if we'll see an announcement next week from Atlus...
Where's Batman then?
Never heard of this Joker character.
Now do a video for Mario Maker 2 we don't need a direct just a bit of info on that. Oh and hello there Mr J, what's that you say Mr J is the other joker oh ok lol.
I think we can all agree that the new stage builder is better than anything we expected or even hoped for.
12:00 I like the witch.
@Zimon me toooo.... recently I finished xenoblade 2, I liked it so much.. I dunno why, I'm eager for fire emblem but I'm more to play P5... let's see if in a week (25th) we will have news!
I guess stage sharing in the NSO app kind of soft confirms Super Mario Maker 2 doing something similar. Guess Nintendo is determined to get miles out of that app no matter what.
So excited to get to return to smash for the first time in a while to beat Classic mode again with a new character! And stage builder sounds dope.
Too bad he comes out after 8:50 PM for me...
I wonder if we'll get free version updates alongside every DLC character thats added...
Joker Update! Nice.
I purchased the Fighter Pass. I will say that the costumes should be free with the Fighter Pass. The passes should come with all DLC.
This update looks great. Joker looks interesting but I think the real winner is the Stage Builder. It looks like such a fun time-sink. And look! The Switch app actually has something else to do other than keeping track of Splatoon 2 progress!
Also, I don't know who keeps spending money on the Mii fighter costumes, but I really wish they'd just stop with that. To me, either add the fighters for real, or don't at all.
@BulbasaurusRex No, I use the eShop from the US. I could buy it digital, but I already had to archive several games, and Smash is a special one. I want it in my physical collection next to my Zelda, Octopath, Mario Odyssey...
18th will be busy for the UK, with both this and Cuphead on the same day. On a plus, a 4 day Easter weekend so plenty of gaming ahead.
Seems that i have to get that NSO app though for Smash stage downloads it seems.
So... uh... who is this Joker fellow? That guy from that Batface movie starring Michael Keaton? And why is this guy the first DLC instead of one of the billions of Nintendo characters that aren't in this game already (not counting Fire Emblem and Pokemon PLEASE no more of those, either)???
I still wish Nintendo would just announce P5 already. It's absurd with the spotlight they're giving Joker not to. At this point it starting to look like they might as well put Kratos in Smash.
@Ttimer5 if it comes on the 17th in the USA but 18th for UK I do suspect a release hour of about 5-6pm EST that could correspond to 11pm-12am in the UK
@NEStalgia considering Atlus has announcements coming up on the 24th-25th, if a port is checked announced it may well come from Atlus first and THEN be signal boosted by nintendo.
But we'll see
@kurtasbestos because he's from the Persona series which is one of the bigger RPGs out there after final fantasy and dragon quest.
In fact in Japan Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and the broader Shin Megami Tensei franchise(from which Persona was born and proved popular enough to stand on it's own even if it retains terminology and such of it's parent franchise) have often been seen as the "Big three" of japanese RPG franchises.
Which mean that with Cloud and now Joker, if the rumors of Dragon Quest's Erdrick/Luminary coming to Smash Bros proves true, all three franchise will then be featured in Smash through playable fighters.
So, now we wait for the Update to happen. I wager it'll happen around Noontime EST.
@rex_rex Hahah, I guess you really want a Peach alternate costume. Not that I blame you. But a lot of the characters have potential. But for starters I think they should bring back Fire Mario and Black Yoshi. Which is nuts that they scrapped these by the way.
@Ludovsky True. It seems inevitable at this point. It's just weird to hype Smash and then announce the base game.
I love Joker, but they really missed an opportunity to announce the next paid DLC character from the pack. As of right now I still am undecided on picking up the pack, and this doesn't make it any easier.
This update looks brilliant and has endless possibilities with stage builder. The smash bros built into the app seems cool 😊
@Yosher yeah.. sure I know there are PLENTY of others character with awesome alternate costumes.. I haven't played crafted world, but imo yoshi could have that thing he wears around him (like a box, i dunno).. I could image also, some altertane costumes for ryu and ken coming from SF4 and or SFV!
Thats a good price for a character, a stage, and a bunch of music! GJ Nintendo!
@subpopz -or you could do some basic research and learn who he is, or about his series?
Google exists for a reason.
@rex_rex Nah. I don't care about those cardboard box things they pass on as 'costumes' in Crafted World. Not to mention it would change look really weird in Smash. For Yoshi they could simply give him like, the Mario Party 2 outfits, or Mario Strikers. Or just make every single Yoshi color available. Right now, the only ones that are not in the game are black, white, and orange. And brown, but that one's replaced by orange for years.. and magenta, which is Baby Yoshi exclusive in NSMBU. They could also make all these available with the Crafted World World skin too, rather than just green.
And yes of course Ryu and Ken can have such alternates as well from various games, that same goes for many other characters. Link, Zelda and Ganondorf can get their Twilight Princess looks back as alternates. Marth and Roy can get their pre-Smash 4 looks back. Meta Knight can be unmasked. Inklings can get some Splatoon 2 inspired looks. Samus can have different suits she's worn throughout the series. Fox and Falco can get their Melee looks. Etc, etc, etc, there's so many possibilities here that they're just not utilizing!
Stage builder stole the show
@dougphisig well unless I'm wrong he still comes with the season pass? So it's not like you can't make that decision retroactively later.
This said I've been musing about it but his inclusion nigh confirm me one of the future characters will be from Dragon Quest.
Because if a dragon quest character joins Smash and rumors of a persona port concretizes themselves later(Atlus do have multiple persona 5-related announcement coming up later still this month), it may well mean that Nintendo would have Smash characters and Switch games of ALL of the "big three" of the jRPG world(Cloud/Joker/"Erdrick" from FinalFantasy/ShinMegatenPersona/Dragon Quest respectively)
No mention of a proper training mode... my hope fades.
@Spiders What are you looking for in the training mode?
@Spiders What do you mean by proper?
Nintendo f**king nailed it with joker!
Bruh.... I have a freind with a PS4, and he literally said he was buying a switch and acting crazy just because of Joker
Is this a mini direct????
@adamatsu Who didn't know stage builder was leaked in a nintendo video by nintendo
@Magikarp_18 noone knew itd be so frickin awesome though
@subpopz No it really isn't. Unlike the MCU, the Persona games are not interconnected in the way the MCU is.
It may not be the same as watching them, but choosing to remain ignorant just because you've never played a Persona is just dumb.
I think linkle would be an awesome DLC character
@Anri02 @Divinebovine At a minimum, play/record functionality. I'd like to set CPU OoS options, tech options, recovery options, etc. to practice. For some icing, showing frame advantage and recovery ("lag" in Smash terms) a la SFV (or like invincibility in the training mode) would be great.
Right now you need a second, subservient player or an Arduino in a controller connected to a laptop to accomplish this.
@Spiders I’m completely convinced that you made up a lot of words there.
Glad to have stage builder but am I the only one who thinks characters who have never appeared in a game on a Nintendo system before should not be added to Smash Bros?
@Anri02 Hahaha.
OoS is "Out of Shield" like what you can buffer (input before the move is available) when blocking, "teching" is hitting the shield button when you land and can then roll, recovery and ledge options is how you get back to the stage, and "frame advantage" is how you know whose turn it is after an attack is blocked (or parried) and Arduino is a programmable microprocessor/controller that people use to hack a Switch control to record and playback inputs.
@Ludovsky Yeah by pack I meant I can't decide at this point if I want to pick him up individually, or get the season pass. Right now all we know is Joker on the season pass.
