Do you like gold? Of course you like gold, even if the look of it doesn't appeal to you the value surely must. Thankfully Nintendo wants us to flash our so-called bling as much as we do, and so they've tucked away a whole range of gold kart options in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for us to find.
Well if you're feeling curious you can always just check out the video above which tells you exactly how to get your button-mashing fingers on every one of these. They include the Gold Kart (known as the Gold Standard in the US version), Gold Wheels, Gold Glider, and Gold Mario himself, a shameless clone of his metal self with supposedly more cash to flash.
Alternatively, you can read how to do it below!

How To Unlock The Gold Kart And Gold Mario In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Gold Mario Unlock Requirements
To unlock Gold Mario, you'll have to complete all Grand Prix Cups on 200cc and get Gold Trophies on all of them.
It should be noted that Gold Mario has identical stats to Metal Mario (he's just a reskin), so you're unlocking him only for the prestige. He doesn't go faster or anything.
Gold Kart Parts Unlock Requirements
Unlike other parts which are unlocked simply through collecting a load of coins, the Gold Kart (or Gold Standard as it's known in the States) and Gold Wheels have specific unlock requirements.
Gold Kart / Gold Standard
To unlock the Gold Kart sans wheels, you need to complete all Cups up to and including 150cc and Mirror with at least one gold star on each. Completing 150cc Cups counts as a win on both the 50cc and 100cc equivalents, so there's no need to beat them all — just the 150cc and Mirror Cups will do the job.
Gold Wheels
To unlock the Gold Wheels, you need to beat the Staff Ghost's time on every single course in the Time Trials mode.
Gold Glider
To unlock the Gold Glider, you need to have amassed 5000 coins in your game. That's half the amount you needed to do the same in the Wii U version of the game, but still a substantial amount.
If you're looking for a way to get those coins while putting in the minimum effort, you might want to investigate our coin 'smart farming' guide:
And that's it! Best of luck mining that gold.

First
I blame nintendolife . They told me why not be first.
Anyway, I probably won't be able to get any of these.
I've got Gold Mario and the Gold Kart. Close to getting the tires, and at a little over 3000 coins.
I doubt I'll get the Gold Tires. Just not a fan of time trials.
I appreciate the video as an option, but couldn't you guys just put the unlock criteria in the article itself? I never liked websites that force people to watch a full video for just a few seconds of information.
Aside from that, I didn't know what the unlock criteria was for the gold wheels and glider. Looks like I'm going to be playing a lot of time trials soon!
In case anyone doesn't want to or can't watch the full video:
Gold Mario: Get a gold trophy on all 200cc cups
Gold Kart: Get at least 1 star on all 150cc and Mirror cups
Gold Wheels: Beat the Staff Ghost for each track in time trials
Gold Glider: Collect 5000 coins
@wiggleronacid Agreed. Thank you for taking the hit and posting the info. I doubt they'll change their ways, and you probably have a snobby comment from them incoming
The Gold Kart is actually unlocked with 1 star each on all just the Mirror cups.
150cc pushes me to my limit. lucky if I get a trophy How do I become a kart racing machine to get gold parts like other people?
@Tsurii Already did on a few courses. Too busy with other games to bother with this right now. Not really the competitive type either.
It was an annoyance unlocking these in the Wii U version. Thanks for double the unnecessary pain Nintendo. Well you are charging people twice for the same game, so you can't say they aren't consistent.
I'm just playing the Wii U version now (yeah late to the party). Getting coins is annoying, I'm still waiting to unlock a Kart and set of wheels I want. I also have a new found hatred for that blue shell. It punishes you for being a good driver.
Anybody who says you can turn it off is lying. The only option I've seen is in online multiplayer tournaments, and even then you have to turn off loads of other items at the same time. Review sites should get together and sabotage reviews of the next Mario Kart if they insist in continuing to include the blue shell. Grrrrrr.
Can you tell I've just been playing some 150cc MK8?
@RedMageLanakyn @wiggleronacid Nintendo Life has posted 34 articles to their website in the past 3 days. 3 of the articles have been centered around videos, which means 31 have been written out. And you feel it neccesary to complain about a video that is only 3 minutes wrong? I do not mean much offense, but that seems a little petty to me.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It really is a shame that Nintendo is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to do everything over again in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Is there any other option to get these items and character?
While I enjoy a good challenge, getting Gold Mario (Gold on all 200cc) is hard (too hard for many). And the Time trials for the wheels are not the easiest either and take long time to achieve.
I guess it is the achievement of it, but for a kid friendly franchise, there are going to be many disappointed kids (and even adults) who will never be at the skill level to get these. And in particular the Gold Mario.
Yes, I know I am a grumpy old man, but I liked that my 5yr-old-son could unlock all the characters in the Wii U version.
We had a bad experience with Sonic Racing Transformed where the difficulty for my son got way too hard way too soon and he couldn't unlock half the characters or tracks. There was no way to lower the difficulty and even I struggled with the difficulty.
I kept saying to my wife I love Mario Kart because my son could unlock all the courses and characters on easy. It seems Nintendo changed that.
@Nintendoforlife If it's a video showcasing something, like a game or some hardware, that's great and makes sense. Making a video about info that would just as easily translate into a written guide is a bit annoying. Petty, maybe, but also a constant reason why I'll search elsewhere for that kind of info instead of trying to watch a video on my phone.
@Nintendoforlife I'm not trying to ridicule NintendoLife; I love this site. But giving my opinion and a bit of constructive criticism hardly seems "petty" to me. If I'm in a loud public area, I'd appreciate the ability to read information like this in a few seconds than hold my phone up to my ear for three full minutes.
And you're right, NintendoLife doesn't do this a lot. But that's what I like about this site over others such as IGN. I'm just throwing my voice out there. It's cool if you disagree with me.
@wiggleronacid Thank you
@Alikan Oh it is pretty easy to get even one star in 150cc but when I tried to do it and I wanted to get all three stars in every 150cc which I did. I have never raged so hard in my life trying to get three stars on every cup. For the mirror I just said screw it and I don't really care if I get one star just want that kart.
@Reverandjames wat pisses me off is wen you get hit constantly by red and blue shells on every turn.
@wiggleronacid
Get 1st place on ALL 200 cc ?!
Gosh.... is it allowed to use Smart Steering to unlock Gold Mario ?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Nintendo is NOT force us to buy the Switch version.
It's up to us to buy the Switch version or not.
And if we want to Double Dip, so What ??
Nothing Wrong to buy again consider the Switch version is NOT Exactly 100% SAME games with Wii U version.
You can persisting not to buy the Switch version but you will NEVER get Inklings characters, Totally Overhauled Battle Mode, Smart Steering, Double Items, etc.
Enjoy your Wii U version !
These are our salad days, slowly being eaten away...
@Fbigabig Enough with the "first" posts please.
it took me less than 24 hours to get the 5000 coins required to unlock the gold glider. coin farming makes collecting coins way to easy. takes about 2 hours for every 48 races.
now onto finishing the 150cc and 200cc racing cups. wish me luck everyone.
If your struggling with 200cc then auto accelerate and (sometimes) steering assist are great.
@Alikan
Definately do the time trials and pay close attention to what the ghost kart does and which parts they use. Also Abdallah Smash has excellent videos on YouTube that I've found really helpfull.
@Nintendoforlife
I think a good PR response would have been, "Thanks for your input. We at Nintendolife try to balance different forms of media to meet the various needs of people that view our content. We realize that those forms might not fit the needs of everyone." Or you could have given a more raw response and said, "While not everyone may enjoy the videos, we like having the opportunity to do them because they allow us to show our personality and obtain a higher level of interaction with the reader. We also need a certain amount of video content advertising to help fund our site and allow us to bring more content to you(including the written articles)."
@wiggleronacid
I read that the Gold Wheels can also be unlocked by getting 15,000 coins.
I cannot confirm if that is true, however.
@cleveland124 Who is we? I don't work for nor am I affiliated with Nintendolife haha.
@Alikan The key lies in memorizing the courses. I suggest practicing each course in a cup until you're comfortable knowing exactly where to power slide.
@LinktotheFuture The gold wheels unlock at 15,000 coins in Mario Kart 7, not 8. So you're correct, but just in another Mario Kart.
Okay. Just the Paraglider and kart body.
Never liked the gold wheels.
The standard tires are okay.
@Nintendoforlife
Maybe they, like me, ignore a lot of the article and only, like me again, click on the ones that interest them. It may just so happen that the few they do click on, contain videos and no real information.
@thesilverbrick
I am aware of the 15,000 coins in Mario Kart 7.
Here is where I got my information:
http://www.cheatcc.com/switch/mariokart8deluxecheatscodes.html
@DarthNocturnal Yeah, I didn't play the first one (although I loved Sonic R on the Saturn way back when), but that unlock system sounds better.
Transformed was a great game, my son loved it and it took place over Mario Kart for him for a while last year, but the unlocking element of the game just changed the experience a bit to being a slog (for me) rather than just letting my son play and enjoy the game himself and unlock all the characters.
The only one I had on Wii U was the gold glider, actually. A shame we can't transfer our data, import it somehow in terms of what we had unlocked. It's supremely aggravating to re-earn everything, including the carts unlocked by purchasing all the DLC last time. Argh. But hey, good vid.
Don't know why people find this hard lol gold Mario was abit tricky but meh lol
The by-line was the best thing about this article. Keep it up.
@sleepinglion how?All of my characters were unlocked from the start in MK8 deluxe unlike wii-u where you had to earn them with gold cups. I triple starred every cup in 50 and 100 cc mode my first attempt. 150cc mode is definitely trickier but overall the AI is dumbed down from wii-u version, and I play with smart sterring/acceleration off.
The game won't even let you cut corners without a powerup when smart steering is enabled, though I could see even veterans using it in 200cc. The key to winning 200cc is knowing when to brake, and picking carts/bikes with excellent handling rather than combined speed/acceleration. Most other cc modes you hold the gas 98% of the time.
@StarDust4Ever The characters were available, just not their rides. Still waiting on Link's horse bike. Apologies if I wasn't clear, I meant in terms of vehicles and the tires, gliders associated with them.
Yeah but earning all those gold trophies seems kinda pointless now that all characters are unlocked by default. BTW, got my first silver trophy on Special Cup 150cc. Some bad luck finally caught up with me after triple starring all 50cc and 100cc courses on my first try. The AI does eventually get smarter...
