Name a sport. Go on, name one. Now presumably you’ve chosen some obscure sport that Mario hasn't played because you saw where this bit was going, but that doesn’t change the fact that our red plumber chap has been in a hell of a lot of sports games. Mario Strikers: Battle League attempts to carry on the legacy of the much-beloved Strikers series, but does this third entry achieve the hat-trick we’d all love to see?
When you boot up the game you’ll be presented with various modes. Quick Battle allows you to jump into a game right away, setting the duration, how skilled the CPU is, whether or not you want items and/or Hyper Strikes to be enabled (more on those later), and whether the game should take place in the daytime or at night. This is the basic mode that most people will bust out when playing with friends, and thankfully you can do so on a single console (with up to eight players at a time), local wireless, and over that new-fangled internet that you might have heard of. If you want to play a quick game of Strikers, this is likely where you’ll go.
Then you have Cup Battles, a sort of tournament-based mode where you and up to three others on the same console are pitted against CPU teams each themed around one of each of the five stats each character possesses in the game. This definitely feels like it’s been designed as the ‘solo’ mode, but the ability to charge in with friends as well is a nice touch.
And lastly, if you don’t count training and options, there’s what we believe is the main selling point in Nintendo’s eyes: Strikers Club. This is an online mode where you can create your own club with friends or any old Joe on the internet complete with customisable name, kits, and stadiums. The kits have a decent amount of flexibility in their design, but the real meat comes in the stadiums. The pitch, the surroundings, the goal design, the fence, the decorations around the goal, there’s so much here to tweak it’s a little bit overwhelming at first.
The owner of the club has the exclusive ability to customise everything, but other members can vote on what they would like to be chosen. The owner can just completely ignore them of course, but it’s nice to see a bit of (optional) democracy at play. From this menu you can also choose to jump into matches with fellow clubmates, and interestingly you’re limited with the characters you can pick. Each member chooses a character and any gear they’d like to wear, and they are then added to the pool of available players. This feels a little bit limiting at first, but it certainly helps to push the idea that you’re really playing as a club, and even if a member isn’t online, their choice of character is still having an impact. Your club’s gear and stadium can also be used in any offline mode if you want to keep flying those particular colours despite not paying your broadband bill. Nice.
But regardless of which mode you select, what matters most is the core gameplay, and what core gameplay! The rules are largely the same as real-life football/soccer, but with no referee, limitations on what limbs can be used, and an electrified fence on the perimeter. Any character unfortunate enough to be tackled into it is stunned for a good few seconds, which is about as devastating as it sounds.
You’ll need to pass, lob, tackle (a lot), dodge (even more), and take shots at goal in order to win, and it’s nothing short of excellent. The game’s tutorial has a lot to take in at first, but the more you play the more the game’s seemingly myriad mechanics slot neatly into place and become second nature. We’re not dealing with Monster Hunter levels of complexity here, but you will have to employ all the tools in your arsenal if you want to take on anything but the easiest CPU, and once you reach this state (which shouldn’t take more than a few hours) everything just sings.
What starts off as a whirlwind of obtuse concepts melds into a choreographed dance of violence and strained relationships. Playing against CPUs is fun, and challenging, but as is almost always the case with these games, the true fun is playing against other humans. Ideally, humans that are within reach for a damned good thrashing when your Boom Boom goalie is just not pulling his flippin’ weight. A group of newbies can fire up the game and have tremendous fun immediately, but those like us that take games far too seriously will, in time, take the tech and metagame to levels we can’t yet imagine.
Indeed we spent longer than we’d care to admit totting stats, workshopping strategies, and counting frames from recorded footage to see how far we could push things. We’re miles away from reaching any kind of zenith, but it became clear just how much hidden depth Mario Strikers: Battle League holds. Every match we improved, and at every results screen we just wanted to jump right into another match; there are no stage hazards (besides that electric fence), only five items, and no variance in the stadiums besides aesthetics. In a lot of games this would be considered a bad thing, but the core experience is so strong here that we’re left with a beautifully pure and effortlessly refined sports game.
This extends to balancing as well; as previously mentioned all the characters have points in five stats, and every character’s total number of points adds up to exactly 63. Some are better at shooting, some are faster, but all of them can be tweaked effortlessly using the gear system. Is Toad too weedy to tackle opponents effectively? Slap enough of the right gear on him and he’ll be tossing Bowser aside like tissue paper.
Each item of gear does have a negative effect as well, meaning for each point gained in one stat, another point must be lost from another, meaning that no matter how much gear you burden your characters with, their total stat points will always add up to 63. Or less if you try and go beyond the maximum of 25 in a single stat, but we know you’re not that silly.
The only practical difference between characters that can’t be changed in any way is their Hyper Strikes. By grabbing the big honking glowing orb that sometimes falls within reach and holding down the shoot button for long enough without being even lightly knocked by a nearby opponent, you can release a Hyper Strike. These are essentially ‘super’ shots that if successful will score you two points instead of one, and each character has their own flavour, such as Luigi’s tornado kick that simply has to be a reference to Super Smash Bros., or Toad’s worryingly effective burrowing header.
Hyper Strikes appear overpowered at first glance, but they’re surprisingly difficult to execute effectively. You need to be completely untouched by tackles for several seconds, and time button presses to improve their effectiveness, and even then Boom Boom the goalkeeper has a chance to repel the onslaught unless your timing is literally perfect. We think they’re an excellent addition and only add to the gameplay rather than breaking it.
As for presentation… well let’s just say the swathes of fans gushing over every tiny detail are entirely justified. This is easily one of the best-looking and well-animated games in Nintendo’s history. Wario celebrating a goal by running in slow motion through a flurry of cash, Rosalina’s frustrated ‘harumph’ upon the opponent scoring, Waluigi’s eerily accurate lip sync of his own name — there is so much detail and sheer delight in every movement, heightening each character’s established personality traits and taking them to their logical conclusion. Even outside of the cutscenes there’s a wealth of superb animation to feast your eyes on, whether it’s Mario booting Yoshi directly in the face, or Boom Boom expressing disbelief at failing to save a goal to a referee that has never been there.
But it doesn’t stop at the visuals, the soundtrack goes so hard we were worried for our console’s safety. Distorted electric guitars and heavy drums produce hardcore remixes of the likes of Super Bell Hill, Luigi’s Mansion, and many more besides. You might not immediately notice them with all the carnage taking place on screen but when you do we dare you not to break out in a gigantic grin.
Performance is borderline perfect offline, we encountered almost zero dropped frames from the target 60fps no matter how hard we pushed things. However, when playing online during the review period, things did get a little spottier. We imagine it’s little more than network latency but slowdown was something we sadly ran into on occasion. It’s by no means game-breaking and we never had any full-on hanging, but we were slightly disappointed that things weren’t as seamless over the internet.
Conclusion
Mario Strikers: Battle League is a masterclass in competitive game design. What it lacks in options is more than made up by just how much fun the game is, and it’s absolutely gorgeous to boot. As it stands it already feels like a complete product, but the promise of future updates down the line gives us even more to get excited about. If arcade sport action isn’t your bag, it’ll likely do nothing to sway your opinion, but if you have even a passing interest in this kind of caper, Mario Strikers: Battle League is the best sports game on Switch right now.

I really have a bit of an issue with your artificial negative points. "We cant give it a 10 cause reasons, lets think of bs - oh yeah, if you dont like football you will not like this football game!!!"
I mean, come on, at least be a little bit more creative.
That being said, I did not expect this to get such a good rating. I will now have to think about getting it when before it looked very underwhelming to me. Just hope the content is there. Just going online and losing to nerds who do nothing else but master the game is not really my thing.
"Simply the best Sports game on Switch"
I guess that's not really hard to accomplish but I'm glad it's actually good. Still don't like that "First we launch it, then we release the rest" approach though
@relinqued True, that's like saying "If you don't like Pokemon than this Pokemon game isn't for you". Well obviously
I mean the direct competitor would be..uh..FIFA? 🤢
Next Level proved themselves to be quite skilled at making quality at this point so this is hardly a surprise. Their games are also usually some of the better looking games on Nintendo hardware. I really wanna see them tackle their own IP at some point.
Curious to see if they would go completely off the rails and create something experimental or if they'd rather stick to their action/arcade strengths from Luigi's Mansion and Strikers.
its leaked since this morning
So excited for this one! I'm glad that it's getting some pretty positive reviews across the board!
I do hope that more single-player content is added in the future, though. Perhaps through some free updates.
The real con is no Daisy
I disagree. 🤨
For me, ARMS is the BEST Sport game on Nintendo Switch since I like Boxing.
Mario Strikers has always been the best of the Mario sports titles so I'm glad this one continues that trend. Have it downloaded ready to go when it launches.
@relinqued Sometimes it does feel like they're thinking up points just for the sake of having points but even without any major 'cons' a game doesn't necessarily deserve a 10/10 anyway.
@Anti-Matter ...Did you even play the demo to this game?
@Anti-Matter ARMS rules. I’m happy to see somebody else who still remembers it exists, haha.
@BenAV Agreed, but especially then it would be beneficial to us to know exactly why its not a 10 instead of being fed a buncha garbo
Cant wait to play it Friday
@Anti-Matter I'm always a little confused by your anti-violence, pro-boxing stance...
@imgrowinglegs
Viva ARMS ! 🥊
Viva Springman !
@Anti-Matter
Well, this is a game with proper gameplay, but you're right, there's no boxing in sight. Everyone will have their preferences.
I'm not trying to be 'that guy' because I do think a lot of commentors in this website have an unnatural obsession for being overly negative about everything but with everything we've heard about this game (a.k.a everything we learned in its reveal trailer), I realistically don't know how this game could score anything higher than a 6.
The amount of content it has in its base state is absolutely insulting and a downright embarrassment to its predecessor (and before people label me as nostalgia blind, I barely played Strikers Charged when it came out so I have zero nostalgic attachment towards it). I'm sure the gameplay is fun and I know the animations are stellar, but unless you're playing online, there is literally no meat and bones to the package and your basically left with a game that we've been TOLD will get updates but how long will said updates last and how substantial will they actually be?
No ill-will towards any of nintendo life staff members because they all seem like wonderful people but it's pretty telling they have a slight problem of overselling 1st and 2nd party Nintendo games and this is a crowning example of that problem. I'm sure the game will be 'excellent' in the moment but once a day or two has passed, you'll already have your entire fill of the game and I feel like a product, ESPECIALLY if said product is multiplayer focused, needs to have some form of longevity to warrant such a high score and from what we've seen of this game, it completely fails to offer an experience that will keep me coming back for more and more.
Welp, time to wait 4 months just to get Daisy and then another 4 to get Toadette, afterwards we need to pray to God that Nintendo doesn't prematurely throw this game to the waste pile so that they can capitalise off the next 'generous free update offering' and have left you with a product that ultimately didn't live up to its £50/$60 price tag (glances over at Mario Maker 2, New Horizons and Super Rush).
@Skunkfish
Did you even realize how did I portray Boxing sport from my avatar ?
I love cute cartoonish boxing games like my avatar that based on Animal Boxing NDS.
As long the violence level is still tolerable for kids (rated E10+) I will play that game.
Always find it hard to justify a purchase like this, because the gameplay is fun but I'm more so interested in the local multiplayer part than any of the online stuff. With my buds being quite a bit less good at gaming than me, I always have to wonder 'Okay, is this something they'll grasp and we'll be able to have fun with or will it be too complex and I'll just steamroll them all the time?' I'm glad to hear it plays as well as it looks, at least!
@Anti-Matter How can you disagree on something that you've never even experienced? Wouldn't it seem fair to at least try out the game first before making comparisons?
Given how Tennis Aces & Golf Super Rush were mainly disliked for their relatively thin story modes, I wonder how this one will ultimately fare given it's leaning even more into the online multiplayer side of things than those games were.
Wow, didn't expect this score.
As much as I'm looking forward to this, I'm doubtful it's the best sport game on Switch. That would be Rocket League and that will take a hell of a lot of beating.
@relinqued I’m not sure if this needs to be said, but the final score is not calculated from some contrived ‘pros minus cons’ metric. Otherwise the game would get 5-1=4 points.
It gets a 9 because the reviewer considers it an an ‘Excellent’ game. And a 9, obviously, is a damn good score. Excellent, in fact. If the reviewer considered it ‘Outstanding’ it would have been given a 10.
The pros and cons section is just a handy summary for those who have skipped over the written review or want a pithy recap
Perhaps “if you don’t like this kind of game then you won’t like this game” is a fairly obvious statement to include in this section, but it’s arguably more useful than saying that the game has absolutely no cons whatsoever and then being told by over-earnest commenters that it should get an automatic 10 because it’s therefore ‘perfect’ (whatever that means).
A link to the scoring policy can be found here.
I’ll be playing this series for the 1st time. I’ll mess around with the cup battles to get the feel of the game and eventually make my way online. Since Daisy isn’t here I’ll probably go with Mario or Peach.
I had a lot of fun with the demo last weekend and the review sounds promising for the most part though the focus on Strikers Club is disappointing. Reminds me of when FPS games had an obsession with focusing on clan recruitment.
You underestimate my power!
I played the trial but this didn't grab me at all. I kept wishing it would just let me play like a proper football game.
Maybe this would appeal to people that find real sports boring but i just found it annoying.
I'm really looking forward to this on Friday!
I'll definitely have to double dip once all of the updates are added. Now give me new Mario baseball & basketball games, Nintendo!
@Tarolusa Fully agree. All of the sports titles on Switch are too barebones with single player content. I would love to buy this - but I can't at this price with so little content for players like me.
Heh, like to see FIFA pull this off.
Well, Mario hasn’t tried his hand at cricket, and that’s the second most popular sport it the world…
But that makes sense because Japan and the US are two countries that don’t really play it, so it probably wouldn’t sell well.
Now if Nintendo ever found a way to make it worth their while selling in the subcontinent, it would sell like wildfire
I played the demo and thought it was a massive bore. 👎👎
@StarPoint
Hello.
Even just looking at the gameplay (either from actual sports or video games or animation), I never like to play kicking ball to other goal corner.
Even I hate Blitzball from FF X because looked like soccer.
I didn't even touch soccer from Tokyo Olympic 2020 PS4 / Kinect Sports 1 XBOX 360. I played Boxing instead since I like Boxing by naturally.
I felt uncomfortable with Gym leader theme from Pokemon Sword / Shield for having soccer like outfits since I don't even like everything about soccer.
My body and brain are literally saying NO to soccer.
The hyper strike at 6:27 seems to take more than a little inspiration from the film Shaolin Soccer!
Great stuff. Looking forward to it. Loved the Wii iteration. This sounds significantly better so that will do me well! Thanks for the review.
I'm sorry, but it sounds like the review is completely overselling the package.
I'm sure the gameplay is fun, but at the end of it all, this game offers you only 2 things to do "play match against CPU" and "play match against human online".
This doesn't seem like something that is worth full price at all, i'll wait for Demon Slayer, Fire Emblem Three Hopes and Capcom Classic Collection instead.....
Thanks for the review I was looking forward to trying the game but the demo required a Nintendo Online subscription.
I really have no interest in online play for this game. So for an offline / local player, doesn't sound like there is enough content yet.
I'll watch this one closely. Maybe it will make sense down the road.
It’s so hard for me to pass on anything Nintendo…. Kinda want it, but not a huge soccer fan. And skeptical with limited content
Now if Nintendo made a Madden type game with Mario instead of Tom for the switch to get EA sports mad 💢... Nah! Couldn't happen until the last dollar from heaven falls flat!
I'm not sure if I really trust this review. It sounds good but a 9 for a game with this little content.... I don't know. A game can be super fun to play but most of the time, unless that gameplay really, REALLY sticks for you, when you lack options, you'll be done with the game before long. That's what happened with Mario Tennis and Golf for me.
I really hope this is one of those games that will stick with me because I love Strikers and I don't want it to feel like a shell of its former self like the other Mario sports games do for me. So I do hope this score will apply for me too when I get the game. If not... well, I can already say that I'll likely not get the next Mario sports title, in that case.
We'll see once the game drops onto my doormat this Friday though! In any case, I'm still excited. The demo was good fun and left a good enough impression that I'm more optimistic for this one.
@Anti-Matter It's fine if you have your preferences, but I still don't think it's fair for you to compare this game to others since you don't like the theme or genre, even though you haven't ever played it.
That's like me saying that I don't like a JRPG I've never played just because I historically dislike them. You can have your opinions, but I think a game that you may dislike still deserves a fair shot.
This looks amazing but just to clarify...
Best Sports game on Switch: Rocket League
Best Sports game ever made: Rocket League
Obviously IMO and I'm willing to concede that Rocket League is a little awkward until you've put in a few hundred hours... so yeah Mario Strikers does look more accessible.
@Yosher I'm feeling the same way, both of the other sports games did sort of lose their luster after a while. But I think the problem with both Aces and Super Rush is that the mechanics just didn't really speak to me that much. Aces' mechanics and gameplay were LEAGUES better than Super Rush, but it still didn't do quite enough for me.
Playing both the training and online demo for this game, I have a feeling that this one might be different. The core mechanics and gameplay feel fantastic, and that could be enough to have me keep coming back to it.
Look. I love NintendoLife a lot and this was a great review that has fully convinced me to get this game. But you guys NEED to stop with the made-up negative points. I strongly doubt that the game “not being for fans of arcade sports games” is enough to lower the score down by a full point.
lol what a con.... you should replace it by "a small number of game modes"
@mariomaster96 Are you forgetting Rocket League, it's very similar to this game too. I play a bit of rocket league (badly), but I know I will enjoy this more than that.
So I'm reading the review there but I don't really see any mention for stuff on the single player end. Does it still have a campaign mode similar to Charged? I would still mostly play online but the fact that I doesn't seem to be much single player stuff to do slightly concerns me.
@relinqued
I feel that on the online part haha
I get destroyed in every online game I play lol
I played Fifa yesterday (22) for the first time since Fifa 15 (which was actually a great Fifa entry). How did they manage to ruin a perfectly fine footie game so much? It's beyond embarrassing. It was zero fun. Dead zero. I'd rather tend to the garden or clean someone elses car than play that again.
Mario Strikers looks like the best football game we can hope for these days. And it's not even a real football game. Says it all.
I'm absolutely delighted to hear this. Any doubts I had with this game before have completely disappeared. Thank you Alex for bringing a very bright Ray of Sunshine into my gloomy day.
Edit: in all the years I've been coming here it never gets old hearing Alex say HELLOOOO THERE LOVELY PEEEOOPLE 😅
@StarPoint Couldn't agree more, though that worry that it WON'T be enough still very much remains. I would still vastly prefer if they just delayed the game and launched it with more content, but it is what it is, and I genuinely hope the gameplay will be that good that it keeps us coming back to it.
The demo did feel great though, like you said, so that's a big plus for sure! The training, though, I have to disagree- I'm still hurting from Nintendo making me tackle all those Yoshis in there. (Joking, of course.)
Game gets great score and people are still not happy xD
Just because game is 9/10, that does not mean that one negative point affected the score.
The score is about overall fell, not the sum of positives and negatives to get an average score.
@Yosher The training was really tough I agree, but I think it helped me to learn the controls pretty effectively. Could have been a bit better though
@MatoFilipovic
Because score doesn't include context. Some people read the review and can discern if the game is right for them.
Besides, reviews are subjective. If I don't intend on using the main feature they're pushing for this game, it may not be a 9 for me. Do I want to pay $80 CAD to find out? No. So I will wait.
@Bizaster The review score is not simply an output value generated by a feeding the number of pros and number of cons into an equation. A 10/10 game is not flawless. It is simply very, very good.
A game can have very few ‘flaws’ and be completely uninspiring. Another game can be flawed in many aspects, and still be an incredible piece of entertainment.
Equating scores with flaws (or lack thereof) is a fundamentally flawed way of thinking about scores.
This is a insta-buy for me I love this series. I was wondering about the gear and how you unlock more of it. I hope there’s a lot of that to go around and would give incentive to play one more round each time. The only negative I could see is the lack of content maybe but these games are always more of a pick up and play experience that’s better with friends.
Next Level Games has been faring well for quite a while now. Perhaps the mandarins in Kyoto should let this Vancouver-based studio put a hockey stick in Mario's hands now... since the usual suspects clearly aren't interested in making a proper hockey game for 100 million-plus fans.
Yes. Hockey for life.
Strikers is my favorite sports franchise so I am super happy this is reviewing well. Can’t pick it up day one but will get it soon.
I've played the tutorial and do feel the gameplay has stepped up a notch compared to previous iterations, and I read the reviewer's comments about the animations with particular satisfaction because it's part of what makes the original game so lovable.
But I'm also disappointed by the limited roster for Day 1 (I wanted an expanded roster and options for 11 v 11 games) and wary of getting sucked into the hype from a reviewer who is no stranger to hyping a Nintendo release, so I plan to hold off until another £5 or so has been knocked off the asking price at UK retailers.

I'm going to try to buy this sports games digital from the Nintendo eShop. Even though it is the third Mario sports game for Nintendo switch. I already have 2 joy cons and a pro controller. So I need 6 more joy cons, One more pro controller, a Super Nes controller from Nintendo switch online, and a Sega Genesis control pad form Nintendo switch online (Which were sold out). It is just like Luigi's mansion 3.
@CANOEberry
Yes please! Of course they would give Mario a flow and busted chiclets... it would be great.
74 metascore. Yikes. I felt the same as many of the lower scores: chaotic game that is thin in content. $60 for a game that does one thing: soccer. No story Mode. Only 10 players. I honestly did cancel my pre order. I’ll wait for discount next year. https://www.metacritic.com/game/switch/mario-strikers-battle-league/critic-reviews
Looking forward to this 👍
Justice for ARMS. Best « sport » game ever.
@Anti-Matter kid cobra 4life tho.
Good stuff, not overly hyped for it but I'll enjoy with the family.
I'm so confused by the reaction to this. Why are people so obsessed with the idea of a story mode? It's a sports game. You play it to play the sport. Do you get on Mario Party for not having a deep single player experience? What about Overwatch? Jackbox? Some games are just meant to be the core experience and not much beyond that.
Why can't a game just be what it is, without a boring story mode shoehorned in? I didn't like the single player campaign in the new Mario Golf, it was getting in the way of what I wanted to do, which was golf. I love Mario Golf for the N64, it is just a golf game that you play to golf.
Good review, but I had to make sure I was reading the line about Mario not being in a lot of sports games correctly. He's had an entire series about tennis, a whole game about basketball, and other games containing horse racing, dodgeball, hockey, and volleyball, and that's not even counting the Mario & Sonic Olympic games with dozens of sports each, so to say he hasn't played a lot of sports or had a lot of sports games is...a little odd, you know?
Having played the demo, I couldn't get into it. I really like the first 2 games in the series but I think the camera angle is ruining the game for me. I think it's a little too zoomed out and with being the case it made it difficult for me to follow the action. Maybe I just need to give another chance though.
People have every right to complain Aces and Rush had thin story modes, but now we look back and say "well, at least they HAD story modes that gave us some good hours of fun", which this one doesn't. That's ridiculous in my opinion. If you're selling a game whose only local competition mode is a simple tournament, then you're offering much less than in the games I mentioned previously. I know they're different developers but Nintendo should have demanded a more solid single player mode, at least. That would reasonably justify a purchase for those who aren't into online. As much as I love football I see little reason for paying full price as I'm not gonna play it online. That's pretty unfortunate but it is what it is.
A full priced AAA sports game with only two modes (and one of them is really really thin in content) in 2022 is not acceptable for me. $60 AAA games must offer content on launch day, but that's just what I think
My level of disappointment equals how much I wanted this game to have a decent single player mode...
@Bret That's simple for me: paying 60 bucks just to play quick games or a thin tournament mode is really steep in my opinion. A solid single player mode would justify people who won't play online getting it. It's not just the core game experience
Football fan and Mario strikers fan so day one. I love that they added a lot to the gameplay mechanics. Easy to play hard to master
@Bret Some people can't fathom that not every game tries to cater to them, and the ones bashing these kinds of games are the type that don't derive any kind of satisfaction from improving at playing a game. They just want to do the bare minimum to win whatever kind of external validation the game can offer before moving on to another game as quickly as possible.
I played the demo completing most of the tutorial and played one online match. It was extremely fun!!!
So..."If you don't like arcade sports games, there's nothing for you here" is a negative point but "Lacking in content" isn't .-.
@meleehunter thank you for your completely unbiased opinion person with a Mario Strikers pfp
Cool. Demo was great fun, especially in local multiplayer. Just have to wait until early July as my eldest wants it as his birthday present.
I´m really sad.
The Cups (tournaments) are only Play-offs (4 games)
Not a league, like Rocket League, Fifa, etc...with stats...points....and then...the playoffs.
Why this game has "battle league" in its name?
It´s too limited single player.
No story, no league, nothing. Light content again for $60
Sad...but I won´t buy =(
I will play Rocket League everyday! offline (real LEAGUES in custom game) and, sometimes, online. Much better game (and FREE).
Removed - unconstructive feedback; user is banned
@Franz Same here. I also found it to lag quite often and just a chaotic mess. The pitch also seems way to small, just not for me, it wasn't any fun. Lastly, and no story mode is the icing on the cake for me.
However, I'm glad it's reviewed well, so those that like it can enjoy it, it's just not for me. I'm going to get another game instead, now just got to decide which one...
May pick it up when Nintendo releases the full ga............ I mean all the free dlc.
@Itachi2099 What I said applies to a lot of games, fighting games in particular.
@fenlix That point is referring to lack of single player content, just in a roundabout way. There's no story fluff or minigames to distract you from the core gameplay that may or may not engage you, but it does grab you and you have the drive to improve, you can potentially put more hours into it than most RPGs.
@blindsquarel and with the full ga.....sorry, all free DLCs....a real LEAGUE to play offline.
Nintendo, come on, you can sell online subscribe and still have more OFFLINE content in a game! Every softhouse do that. You..Nintendon´t!
Result? I play more Steam everyday than Switch.
@Rykdrew
Hey, let’s not get to greedy. I think we should always root for a small indie success story.
I just hope NLG's next game is Punch-Out.
Nintendo life: This is the best Sports game on switch! 9/10!
Also Nintendo Life: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, 10/10!
https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/nintendo-switch/mario_kart_8_deluxe
@nimnio what I feel when a play a Nintendo Sport game is:
Nintendo Sport Games have this Immediate wow, because of the character design, and a great first impression....but the charm wears off quickly.
Except Mario Kart!
@meleehunter Seems about right. I really dislike this pervasive idea that arcade-style games can never be worth full price.
Apparentely the rest of the world doesnt agree with that score. I see a lot of 7 out of 10.
@nintendolife there is a rumor about a Nintendo direct next Wednesday thanks to a Neon White leak apparently
Looks pretty cool. Might need to dust of the old Switch for this one.
Looks great for quick games. Far better than what fifa did on switch.
I love my nintendo switch oled , but hate mario and games with mario! Nintendo i want WAVE RACE , F ZERO , METROID PRIME , STARFOX!
No proper single-player, no buy for me.
Also no screenshots from handheld-mode, you got to be joking!

@Bret I think its not a problem to be an "arcade game". But about the content perspective.
Example: Soulcalibur VI, an arcade fighting game. It has
I have 342 hours (steam version) and I haven't even seen all the content the game has to offer. Each of the 29 characters has over 50 moves and variations. And you can still create other moves. This brings infinite variation.
And it is an arcade game.
So...wee have Mario Strikers Battle League (without a league), Sega Soccer Slam (lacking in content), Mario Golf Super Rush (without a tournament like Mario Golf 64)...
The difference here :
Other softhouses:
Soulcalibur VI: $39 (never got FULL price ever, today $14)
Sega Soccer Slam ($19 in launch - ok..another time...but in that time this game was cheaper than first Mario Strikers)
Now Nintendo games:
Mario Strikers $60
Mario Golf Super Rush: $60
It's not a problem to be an arcade game, but it's a problem to have no content.
Mario Strikers Battle League has the amount of content similar to Sega Soccer Slam (a not FULL price game ever). In fact, Sega Soccer Slam has much more characters (27) and an online league (and it is a 2002 game).
Other Comparison:
Horizon Chase $15 is an arcade game with 130 tracks and SEVERAL game modes, tournaments for points. Everything. And Everything can be played 4-players split screen coop, all game modes.
Cruis'n Blast $40 (Nintendo, Switch). Only 6 tracks. In fact, 24...buuut each track change only the scenario, not the track itself. No league, tournament. Nothing.
But Nintendo sells it much more value than Horizon Chase.
I really don´t understand Nintendo high prices for less content games.
***
I mentioned here fighting game, racing and sport. No matter what style of play, I just wanted to write about amount of content.
@meleehunter You can have a great single-player and multiplayer mode in one package. It has been done before. So I don't know why some of you folk are getting mad at people for wanting both.
No substantial single player = No buy.
Best sports game? Better than Splatoon 2? You can say Splatoon is a free interpretation of Paintball as this one is for football, or Arms to boxing, or Super Mario Odyssey to parkour (ok not the last one)
@MsJubilee If you don't like the core gameplay that was designed primarily for multiplayer, would any amount of characters or modes make you enjoy it more?
Story modes or no, I find it hard to believe one can get great value out of playing a multiplayer game without playing multiplayer. At best it's long but utterly repetitive.
@Rykdrew I see your point, but one note, Cruis'n Blast for Switch was not published by Nintendo, but by GameMill Entertainment/Raw Thrills. Nintendo really had nothing to do with it other than being a partial owner of the trademark. It was also only $39.99 when it came out (in the US).
I can understand that different gamers want different things. I do think sometimes Nintendo skirts the line with light content in their games, but they are still quality games. I would have really liked to have a deep single-player mode in this one for sure.
Hm, I'll play the demo for myself and base my thoughts from there.
The review seems inflated since apparently this game is lacking in content which is disappointing.
It's almost like they can give it the score they want and don't have to follow the "consensus" of other sites.
Unfortunately it sounds pathetically short on content for a full-priced game.
@Magician maybe punch out would come with a single player campaign
@BrianJL small correction: Nintendo fully owns the Cruis'n IP.
On topic: can't wait to try out the game, I had a blast playing Strikers and the original game on gamecube.
I'm glad it looks and plays great, but 60 bucks for an arcade style sports game is ridiculous, even if it plays like a dream
Pity I'll have to miss out on this apparently excellent title. I'm happy for everyone who was looking forward to it, though.
Has anyone played it who loved the GameCube version but didn't enjoy the Wii version? I loved the pick up and play simplicity of the GameCube version, and although options were limited, the mini-leagues were great for a quick blast with friends.

@relinqued
i see this stuff in reviews all the time
PRO - X
CON - you might not like X
🙄
Sounds like it has the charm and design that Camelot isn’t mustering for their games these days, which is a real shame
Laughing at people here bringing up Metacritic as if that is ever a trustworthy resource to gauge game quality when a single 50 [yes someone gave this game a 50/100 which is nonsensical no matter how strongly you feel this game should have a shoehorned story mode] from random review website can tank the score.
This has sale written all over it for me. Sucker for Mario games of any type, but this sport doesn’t grab me.
I think the review is fair because it’s one person’s opinion of it.
After reading opposing, less-praising reviews on Metacritic (where the game stands at 7.5 from 52 critics), I will still purchase because I want to play with my kids next week in vacation; but as far as my understanding goes, those who expect to play alone (offline) are in for a ‘meatless’ surprise.
Love Mario Strikers, but I can't understand why the 15 year old and still excellent Strikers Charged has more game modes and twice as many characters as this game (about 9 or 10 captains and almost as many team mates). For me the single player mode Challenge Mode was a no-brainer to make a comeback with new game modes.
The demo didn't win me over, it seemed way too complicated for what should be an arcade party soccer game. But I guess it can't be worse than Polish national team.
Maybe I will get the game in 2023 when all the content is available. I am not into this "piece meal" approach Nintendo has been doing with their games lately.
I feel a bit insulted by the 'Con' which basically says 'if you don't like games like this you won't like this game'. I don't hate all arcade sports games, but I've just never enjoyed the Mario ones for some reason even though I love Mario.
Sorry Ninty!
No proper single player campaign/story mode = no buy for me.
This is also my problem with mario kart/smash bros (both of which i consider sports games btw)
My favorite parts about reading the comments of a new release are:
And I have 0 interest in playing this game, mind. I enjoy reading reviews on NL because everyone writing style is fun to read, then I can pop into the comments and check out the outrage because it's fun!
I still can't believe they took Daisy out
No stage hazards and no unique fields?! Well, I'm waiting for an update. Or I'll buy it dirt cheap used when it inevitably drops in price because people get bored.
Crazy stages and hazards are what make Nintendo games fun. It also gives the games a lot of replayability/longevity because there are so many unique and crazy things that happen.
Playing the demo over the weekend, I was surprised that the game can get quite complex, not that you often need to worry about "perfect strikes" and "one shots", or whatever it was. The negative is it's just 3 vs 3 football and it quickly became uninteresting. Now with the reviews, especially the lack of game modes and characters, it's probably one I'll skip, and say Mario Tennis and Mario Golf are the best sports games on the Switch.
I look forward to grabbing the cartridge early next year after the game is completed.
I have plenty else to keep me busy in the meantime.
I agree with the others. That single con was pretty forced. I want to know if that actually made it miss a perfect 10.
@imgrowinglegs @Anti-Matter
Let's play ARMS! I adore it
Violence is the answer? This isn't Blood Bowl 3!!
10/10
Another Masterpiece for The Amazing Nintendo Switch!
So a 7 by non-official Nintendo game standards. Gotta give official titles that 2 point boost.
@UsurperKing No a 7.5 means it's good. Not great. Not near perfect. Just good.
There is no way this is a 9. First off you cant even grasp who you are controlling in the middle of the game because players from the same team have the same colors except a tiny number that in the middle of the confusion it gets lost very quickly, items are dumb waiting for boxes it should be rewarded for tackling and super shots is annoying because almost all the times the other team can defend it. You cant change rules or the damn controls which is essential for every football game! (not soccer foot=feet) skip super shots animations , only 10 characters and 5 stages. This game is nowhere near a 9 but reviewers here are always too forgiving with this sports titles that are obviously incomplete.
@Zyph
No, the lack of single player content at it's price point surely did?
The best sports game on the switch is supermegabaseball 3, with all the depth and arcade gameplay you want.. they are made for each other… ( i don’t consider mario kart a sports game, and rocket league is just much better on the ps5, but is ofcourse the best esport ever made)..
I did order it yesterday after the video version of the review got up, simce i have a very long train ride next week, so some switch freshness would be nice (and playing switch sports in the train might be a bit weird)… and i liked the wii game as well.. (although to be fair i more liked the concept of the wii game than the game itself in the end)… digital foundry was very positive as well…
But now i’m sort of regretting it.. the demo didn’t really grab me, and the criticism of the gamexplain and eurogamer reviews (it’s less weird than the wii one, and the focus on hyperstrike kills the fluidity) do resonate. Well we see tomorrow…

@SteamEngenius I don't see how that changes anything that I said. And I don't intend to disect what a review number means, especially when it's from Metacritic. You know, the totally accurate review site where people definitely always rate a game per their own opinions, and not love bomb or hate bomb to try and raise or lower the overall score to fit their own opinion?
I'm not against reading reviews or watching them + some gameplay videos to see if that's what someone may enjoy playing. In fact, they're quite important for customers to come to their own conclusions, which is sensible thing to do. The number given at the very end of all that is arbitrary, it means nothing, but that's what the discussion often leans towards.
I'm sorry I disagree a 9 feels so high for lacks of content for game I did try the demo and its just very lackluster in comparison to the wii and gamecube version the roaster so low as well if anything I would say 5 at best its not like original game and price tag isn't worth it for little content will skip this one.
Great score! Now that Mario Strikers (Soccer) has released ... in terms of Mario/Nintendo sports games, I'm ready for a new:
… all on Switch! All are very underrated arcade sports series that deserve new entries.
Nintendo get (or get somebody) on them asap!
... Wun can only hope.
@relinqued i think it's great, because I can't stand soccer, but thought since it's Mario, i may give this a go. But, they saved me $60, & i appreciate it.
...and FWIW, there's 56 reviews on metacritic, with an average score of 75. Nintendo Life review is 1 of only 5 reviews that are a 90 or above.
Controls are quite hard, tons of tutorials...
@relinqued something can have no real negatives and still not be a 10
Hi @AlexOlney
Is it possible for three or four friends to team up online (on three or four separate consoles no one local) and then play strangers online? Or is it just two vs two?
Many thanks, in advance!
Edit: for anyone wondering who happens to read this, no, you can't. It is inexplicably, absurdly limited to 2 switches in an online party. This needs fixing as soon as possible. Highly recommend checking other reviews before buying. Love this site but I'm sad to say it's yet another NLife review that simply fails to give the consumer the information they need to make an informed decision.
I read a review of this elsewhere which said that there are only 10 characters... in this 5x5 game. That makes me interested to know: is every match the same 5 vs the same 5, just with different team liveries? I'm interested to know.
@N64-ROX You can choose multiple times the same characters without any limits. Like, you can have an entire team made of Yoshi's or Waluigis if you want.
@jowe_gw thanks for explaining! An entire team of Waluigis sounds like a good starting point for the next spicy meme!
Wow… the buyers remorse has set in pretty quick on this one. Not nearly as good as GameCube or Wii strikers. Hopefully they have some updates for single player. Wish I read more reviews. Oh well, I’m glad strikers is back and here’s hoping we get some updates .
I’ve been playing this for the better of the day and my thoughts are 1) Super fun, great gameplay but 2) A bit limited.
As someone who buys these primarily for the single player, there’s not much here. Just some cups to play and a bit of gear to unlock. But even the gear options are a tad limited and uninspired. I’m hoping for a substantial update that adds some extra single player modes (and characters like Daisy). Still, a good game, but I wish there was a bit more to do.
@N64-ROX While technically 5 on 5 it’s really more like 4 on 4 because the goalie for each team is Boom Boom and you can’t change him out. But yeah, theoretically you can have the same characters go head to head. I admit, it is a bit odd to have Peach vs Peach or something like that lol
@Gamergirl94 I agree. The scores on the site can really vary depending on who reviews it. I find it’s better just to read what the reviewer says than give the score much stock. Because honestly, there are games with far more content and glowing reviews on this site that get lower score. So yeah, a 9 for Strikers is… a bit high for what it is lol.
@Tarolusa I agree with a lot of this. I don’t really like the trend with the sports games lately. Mario Tennis, Golf, and now Strikers for Switch have all had free DLC updates. And while it’s fun to get new stuff later on, it’s starting to become obvious they’re cutting content or releasing the game half finished just to update it later. There’s no reason the Strikers roster should be as small as it is and missing characters like Daisy. I mean, cmon, she’s a mainstay in the Mario sports games.
It’s just a shame this game feels like it’s missing something. I’m sure in a few months, once some extra characters and modes are added, it’ll feel closer to a “9” rating (hopefully). But as is, nowhere close.
What I don't understand is how next iterations of Mario sports titles have the same if not less content than the previous installments and people still pour over them like they're the next greatest thing. Mario Tennis Aces, Golf World Tour and Strikers Battle League all have exactly what the Wii and Gamecube versions have, if not less. I continually find myself wanting to go back to Mario Power Tennis or Golf Toadstool Tour on GCN or Mario Strikers Charged on Wii. Nintendo should be ashamed. It's blatantly clear that they're just churning out a new game because, well it can be labeled as new and people will buy it. But it's the same damn game we've been playing for 15+ years! And on top of that, the whole "trickle DLC" thing. Just launch the game with all content to begin with. When all content is released 6 months from now I won't care anymore. At that point don't even waste your time giving us more characters, just give us more content in the next game.
@relinqued Way to completely miss the point. People looking for an authentic single-player experience, a season, or anything outside of the standard match type are going to be disappointed. Take off your Nintendo goggles for two seconds and read it again.
I sincerely do not understand the people who want them to shoehorn another story mode into these games. I gritted my teeth through the Golf one hopeful once I got through it there'd be something else to enjoy in that game (there wasn't).
I'm happily enjoying the online matches in Strikers though. What were people expecting? Did no one play the GameCube game? It had local co-op play and single player tournaments. That.....was....it! That's the game folks. Golf should have had single player tournaments, those were fun and challenging on N64 and GameCube.
9/10 yet the games missing half a games feature no campaign or story mode. Limited modes for single players this seems like quite a one sided review.
While a review is the reviews opinion, it’s should be the obligation of the review to take all things into considerations. As the score is clearly needs for more than just a opinion.
Mario Strikers: Battle League
Strikers Club Code: 2NL60MD
Please feel free to squad up and join my club!
… Wun can only hope.
@DreemWeever Rocket League is indeed hands-down the best e-sports game every made. It's incredibly accessible and easy to understand, but the gameplay has untold levels of depth, mainly due to it being physics based and you have to actually learn to control yourself and control the ball.
That being said, unfortunately the Switch version is the Worst version of RL, as it has crazy high input lag. And psyonix refuses to acknowledge or address it.
The game itself has lack of contents with full price.
It doesn't contain many main characters of Nintendo.
Of course I don't buy all the games to play 1000+ times to play over and over, but how long this game stay fun? 2,3 hours?
@tyranny_life I play Rocket league on Xbox but I used to play a lot on Switch and never had an issue with lag or frame rate...
@DreemWeever Do you play competitively? at what rank? and, after playing on Xbox, have you immediately gone back and tried a match on Switch? I bet if you did that you'd see a huge difference.
I'm Champ2 on pc, and can barely play at platinum on Switch. doesn't matter which controllers, wired or bluetooth, handheld or docked, on a high refresh/response rate gaming monitor (i know a lot of tv's introduce latency) the input lag is very bad.
Yeah, no.. This game is in no way 9/10. There is not enough content and the investing in stats thing doesnt make sense to me. You can already choose players based on attributes you want and with more characters on the way there will be more than enough variety. I would rather spend my coins on cosmetics. The core gameplay is good but I feel like I am still playing the demo and I dont have anything to work towards. I wish they at least added cups based on difficulty or something or that star thingie in Mario kart eg scoring specific number of goals to get the perfect cup idk. All in all I am very underwhelmed.
@Roger_Brazil
Hopefully you’ve been to see your GP by now.
Wishing you the best.
This needs a substantial content update to make it worth the score
Yeah, it's good but lacking in content.
Great fun with a friend in local co-op or online. But as a single-player experience falls flat.
Don't regret the purchase, but would be a guaranteed buy when more content is announced for it.
I don't think the gameplay here is quite as good as the last entry. It seems really really difficult to score sometimes, which I suppose you could argue is a good thing. But when the CPU only has to get a slight tap or they always manage to disable the goalie and magically have the ball drop back to them on a plate for the rebound, it gets frustrating. Passing the ball around is almost ineffective as a strategy too, unless you're lightning quick at it. The CPU usually manages to have someone marking where you pass it anyway. I preferred it when passing the ball around built up power to unleash a stronger strike. At least it felt worthwhile doing.
There are flaws in this game for sure. Like how the auto switching never quite gives you the player you need to in a hurry. Or how it gets too hectic that you often lose the ball or even mix up who is on your team if the opponents play in a similar shade of kit. It all gets a little bit confusing. Despite all that, it's still glorious when you do pull off the perfect sweeping attack and curl it around the keeper. Though there's a real big weak spot for the keeper if you take the ball the edge of the box and tap it to the side of the goal they're not defending. Scoring then becomes all too easy and you can bypass all the nonsense of charging and shaping your shots and just keep going for 1 on 1's with the goalie. I've found that to be the most effective way to Burnley my way past all the Galactic Mode cups. Set yourself up with characters with the speed stat maxed out and then pass through the defenders until you get a break away on goal. No one's catching you. Slot it past the keeper and repeat. They'll still be super difficult to defend against but once you work out you can park the bus and catch them on the counter attack it makes the whole game a tactical dream. I've practically become Jose Mourinho in his prime Chelsea days.
This game is a blatant rip-off from Nintendo.
I have to massively disagree with this score. I've had the game for two hours and I feel like I've seen and done everything. There is little variation in how the characters play. There's about 2 animations for everything. No offline content at all and online tires quickly. 3/10 for me. Will be trading in asap
No way this game is a 9...
it's a 5 at best
@imgrowinglegs
Let's play ARMS! It's definitely been a while
@RodSD64 I haven’t played ARMS too much since I made this comment two years ago, haha. I’m very rusty.
I love that game though. It certainly deserved to be a bigger hit than it was.
@imgrowinglegs
I haven't played ARMS in years, but it would be cool to throw some punches again lol
