Seven superhero arcade beat 'em ups are heading to Switch later this year thanks to the newly-announced Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.
As the name might suggest, this is a bundle all about our Marvel faves. The seven titles included are as follows:
- X-MEN CHILDREN OF THE ATOM
- MARVEL SUPER HEROES
- X-MEN VS. STREET FIGHTER
- MARVEL SUPER HEROES vs. STREET FIGHTER
- MARVEL vs. CAPCOM CLASH OF SUPER HEROES
- MARVEL vs. CAPCOM 2 New Age of Heroes
- THE PUNISHER
Things seem to have been presented relatively faithfully, though the collection does offer a handful of new features like online functionality for battling with your pals, training modes, custom matches, a museum and much more.
This one is currently listed for release at some point in 2024. We'll be keeping an eye out for a more secure date over the coming months.
Will you be picking this up for a slice of beat-em-up action later this year? Swing down to the comments and let us know.

My BF literally was trying to find a way to play these games last week, this is great.
Hoping it's not digital only!
This annoucement here alone, made this a 10 outta 10 direct for me.
My jaw popped wide open.
Absolutely legendary fighting games, and it is such a relief to finally see them get a proper re-release.
I will get this on Switch, and if it comes to Xbox I'll gladly double-dip so I can play with proper online 😅
This should be a nice collection! I have enjoyed all of these.
THE PUNISHER is finally coming to consoles! This direct's biggest announcement for me personally!
A great collection though I'm still disappointed they didn't include the two Super NES MARVEL games (X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse and Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems) as well since both were also by Capcom. Oh well hopefully they'll come via NSO someday.
This was one of the highlights of today's direct for me! I'm so happy the Marvel Vs 2D games were my childhood and MVC2 is still one of my all time favorite fighting games.
@andyg1412 Already confirmed that there will be physical
Age rating alert 🚨
I think there is one game from rated 18+ franchise, right??
While I'm not a Marvel fan at all, I do appreciate Capcom's numerous retro collections on Switch (particularly anything relating to Street Fighter and/or Mega Man), so, this is easily a must-have, provided that there's a physical release, and surely there'd have to be one in the works.
I used to play a couple of these like crazy on the ps1. Definitely picking this one up, hope the online scene is slightly robust for a while
Y'all I almost threw my phone! Oh, having these and most of street fighter on switch?! Dream come true. Can't wait to inform my crew. Plus it is the arcade versions (which are what I grew up playing). So hyped! CPS2/NAOMI fans have been eating well on the Switch.
TYPHOON!
Take me for a ride.
All these games, AND the Punisher beat 'em up? Amazing to say the least. Maybe now I can finally retire my ancient dreamcast copy of MvC2.
Missed the Direct, but I know NLife has people like me covered with the news. This sounds cool! I'll be keeping my eyes on this.
weren't there "HD" versions of these for like xbox live or something? or like a widescreen version? that would have been nice to have
One of the highlights for me. Its MAHVEL BABY!!
Mvc2 is a great win! I wonder if they will make it like the Dreamcast version where you have to buy* extra chars and costumes? Think that took me 50 hours on the DC to unlock and that would be great fun to do again!
This is a BIG deal. Folks were campaigning for MvC2’s return and we got that and more!
Yeah this already made the direct for me.
These have to be one of the best superhero adaptations in any media. Capcom did an amazing job translating each superhero. Day 1 baby, DAY 1!!!
Nice Marvel fighter collection. The Punisher though was a random addition though lol.
Already a physical version confirmed, so I'm on board. Hope Capcom can work with SNK to bring a collection of Capcom vs. SNK, including the SNK-produced games.
Like with the Beat-em-Up/Arcade Stadium and Street Fighter Anniversary Collections, I'll likely double dip on both Switch and PC/Steam Deck with this.
This is day one for me.
Just the other day I was thinking about such a collection.
A bit of a shame they didn't add MvC3 but I'm happy with the package.
Can't wait to play all of them again!
Only interested in the Punisher game. I don’t think I will pick it up for that fraction of the content here.
This was my highlight
We going for a ride. I think this is the first time these games have ever dropped on a Nintendo console.
Oh, well.
I think I will stick on PS1 version of X-Men vs street Fighter, for the clean choice for me.
I played that game first time from Arcade machine at Singapore back in year 1997.
Day 1 for me as I've never played any of these games before.
Best announcement ever.
Oh man! I almost had a heart attack there!
YOOOOO, LET'S GOO!!
Nobody expected this to happen.
Recently, I've been thinking about MVCI, wondering if Capcom would port it to Switch. This collection is cool.
Thinking about getting just for Punisher game since it seems we never getting a marvel beat-em up collection
This was the best announcement of the direct for me tbh. I’m so pumped to get to play these
This was certainly a surprise. I have very little experience with these games but I know this made fighting game fans happy. I hope Capcom vs SNK is next.
@WaveBoy Well, it just means that we have to support these types of collections for Capcom to consider either porting or remaking those old arcade/Dreamcast games.
first of all YESS MvC1! 👍👍
The most disappointing thing about finally getting pretty much 1:1 accurate "arcade perfect" ports at home has been finding out that the home console versions were generally better the whole time 😆
I really want this to be the Dreamcast port of MvC, especially for the 4p mode, but it will likely be the arcade version, as usual.
Same feeling about Alpha 3, the straight arcade version we've been presented in compilations lacks the DC port's fleshed out, polished feel, and actual features developed for that version.
I want to raise awareness of home ports, they are often much better (even aurally and visually) than the arcade games they are based on, and official "preservation" (read: cash ins) would let them slip through the cracks in into obscurity. thank you.
It's cool that these games are here but... am I the only one who gets a bit frustrated that Capcom doesn't rerelease their "3D" era fighting games? like, where's Street Fighter 4 and 5 and MvC3?! it's always just the sprite based ones.
YES! YES! YES! FINALLY! The only sad thing about this collection is that Norimaro is removed, due to license issues, probably.
'ITS MAHVEL BAYBEE!!!'
'OH HE'S SO PRINGLES, WHERE YO CURLEH MUSTACHE AT'
'YOU WANNA LEARN HOW TO DO A [REDACTED] INFINITE!?'
WE ARE LEVELS OF BACK PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT UNATTAINABLE OH MY GOD
Capcom keeping the collections coming and yet I didn't expect a Marvel vs. Capcom one, what a nice surprise, not sure when I'll be able to get it myself, but eventually for sure!
@Serpenterror Norimaro is removed due to license issues, probably.
@Vyacheslav333 Given the collection itself had to go through legal hurdles, maybe we will get a localized Norimaro?
I mean, they wouldn't have an exclusive character if you play only in Japanese, right?
@Blofse These are the arcade versions so I doubt they'll have that in MvC2. The in-game currency only applies to the console ports of that game. In the arcade version you just had to keep playing the game a certain amount of times to earn points and the extra characters would eventually be unlock one by one as those points increased.
Was a huge fan of how the Street Fighter collection. So will be picking this up too. Just waiting for the Capcom vs SNK games to be released on modern systems now. Although admittedly did think they were announcing the third game during the Xbox Showcase briefly but then it turned out to be just Terry Bogard in SF6.
@Fizza I thought I'd be showing my age if I cracked a pringles joke, so thank you, young one for taking one for team.
@LadyCharlie I think its coming to everything EXCEPT Xbox lol. But steam and PS4 should have better online connection.
@Waluigi451 if you haven't played them, you are in for an amazing time. Peak 90s arcade fighting. They're so over the top, and Capcom did an incredible job with their versions of Marvel characters.
omg omg omg omg omg
Oh man, I hope this means it's easier to strike a deal with Disney/Marvel than what we might think.
There are some old Activision Spider-man games that I want remastered and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1+2
@-wc- "I want to raise awareness of home ports, they are often much better (even aurally and visually) than the arcade games they are based on"
That's a pretty reductive stance. It wasn't really until about the Dreamcast era where home versions of games were on par with their arcade counterparts. The home versions of those Capcom 2D fighters often had fighters with missing frames of animation to save on RAM requirements on more limited hardware, missing background animations and effects on stages, simplified endings to save on disc space, and programmed at a lower resolution.
The Dreamcast is around the time where arcades started dying in the West; because it was capable of keeping up with them, it made arcades irrelevant.
How did we get this many good announcements today? It's unreal
Highlight of the Direct for me. I've been waiting and hoping for this release since the home cabinet was released a while back.
@miwa mine too except the Genesis got the first real console port of the game back in the ‘90’s. For sure super excited it will be on an accessible console now.
@Fizza
+1 for the Yipes commentary, they should totally add that in as a voice track while you're playing. Get some 'JUSTIN WOOOONG OH MY GOD' in there as well for a clutch comeback.
This is wonderful news. I played a good bit of Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter a bit over a year ago and had a great time. MSH is a good one when you're not in the mood for the tag structure of the other games and want a traditional two-round fighter.
Also, so nice to finally see Punisher offered for sale other than as an arcade cabinet. That's one of the best beat-em-up games Capcom ever did. It looked like they'd never release a home version of that. So glad to see it finally happen and it's a great inclusion. Hopefully, they can release their other licensed games like the two SNES Marvel games, Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, and Alien vs. Predator.

@burninmylight
"It wasn't really until about the Dreamcast era where home versions of games were on par with their arcade counterparts."
sorry, there's a whole history of enhanced and original home ports that you are apparently unaware of.
see: many Namco, Konami, and Capcom ports throughout the 8, 16, and 32 bit eras. pick one, almost.
ok heres some.
bionic commando and contra on nes
UN squadron and Turtles in Time on SNES
Tekken 1 2 and 3, soul blade on PSX
remember, im mostly talking about additional content and features, not graphics but I personally believe that some of those (especially the NES ones) look and sound better, too. 👍
@MirrorFate2 Well, who knows... There's no mention of Norimaro on the Japanese site, nor any mention of his removal... It's weird.
CHILDREN OF THE ATOM!! This was my “jam” (people still say that right?) in the arcades back in the day along with the MK arcade games and Killer Instinct. I competed tournaments for them quite frequently and often won many of them. I’ll definitely thrown down my cash for this.
Wow, literally a dream of mine for years now. Easy day 1.
Day 1 physical purchase for me.
@-wc- I agree with you on a lot of your points sometimes when you do actually play the arcade version they don’t feel as polished or as complete as the home versions graphics aside. Rolling thunder 2 was one of the first games I really noticed it on the Mega drive it has mission dialogue before you start and a nice little ending sequence at the end of each level nothing like that on the arcade version. All the capcom fighters on Dreamcast are amazing and they all definitely do have extras and extra polish added to them Third strike on the anniversary collection is no where near as good as the Dreamcast version
@link3710
(question: "BF")
This was my personal highlight of the show. I'm pre-ordering this asap. Way back when I had to import the original Xmen vs Street Fighter on Saturn cuz it wasn't available Stateside for consoles. Still my favorite fighter.
So pumped. Just played X-Men vs Streetfighter on my Sega Saturn a few months ago. Instabuy for me.
Is there a snowballs chance in hell at getting Panzer Dragoon Saga nd Burning Rangers Remastered for Switch? I love me some good Saturn stuff.
@Ashina. Are you saying there is a physical switch release in the works as @andyg1412 said? Is it true? I hope so.
@Gs69
yes! I have that collection too and I'm ruined by my hours of playing the home versions of all those games over the years. The arcade versions are so stripped down!
also, i rarely come across a snes port of an arcade game that doesnt sound miles better. SF II turbo springs to mind. 👍
cheers ✌️
@Mario500 Boyfriend lol
Love the capcom marvel games
Definitely getting this even better if it go's on cartridge
X-MEN CHILDREN OF THE Atom is one of my favourite fighting games of all time 😁😊😀
Physical only on PS4
@-wc- "I want to raise awareness of home ports, they are often much better (even aurally and visually) than the arcade games they are based on"
and then
"remember, im mostly talking about additional content and features, not graphics"
Don't sprain your ankle moving those goalpoasts any faster 👍✌️
X-Men: Children of the Atom, arcade vs. PlayStation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O15p5IxRA0k
X-Men vs. Street Fighter:
https://youtu.be/0hCC2MesqUI
The PS version... didn't allow you to tag in partners in a match. That is a MAJOR gameplay element that pretty much makes it an entirely different game, Mr. Additional Content and Features.
But go ahead and find some more games that have nothing to do with the MvC games in question and widen the scope of what you originally said. Those goalposts aren't going to move themselves. Toodles! 👌
@burninmylight
here's the full quote
"remember, im mostly talking about additional content and features, not graphics but I personally believe that some of those (especially the NES ones) look and sound better, too. 👍"
not to mention the many times i qualified my statement with words like "often." your examples of exceptions mean nothing because nothing I've said was absolute and I'm just trying to talk about an aspect of gaming i find interesting. 🙄
btw i was intentionally "widening the scope" with examples, that was my entire point. but i specifically first said
"I really want this to be the Dreamcast port of MvC, especially for the 4p mode, but it will likely be the arcade version, as usual."
you are free to believe what you want about arcade ports and leave me alone, thanks. ✌️
Great to see them getting a re-release only downside is it well be missing some of the extras found in the home versions. Playable bosses and game modes will be missing. Plus my biggest bug bear being the lack of a verses mode where you can select your character each time.
First time ever Marvel vs. Capcom comes to a Nintendo console. Oh I wanted this for so long...
Great that Capcom is making some of its comic book games available again. I would love for Sega to do the same with Spider-Man: The Arcade Game.
@Blofse The XBOX 360 version had all characters unlocked from the start.
I'm glad to see this is finally happening. The fact that Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects existed on PS2, but this didn't exist until now made me sick.
Wow, what a damn surprise. A friend of mine was just talking about playing the old X-Men arcade games and now this pops up. Sheesh. All i have to say is, BERSERKER BARRAGE!!
Are you ready true believers?!
@-wc- I didn't say every single arcade game is superior to the home console version either. Care to hold yourself to the same standard you use when being pedantic toward others' comments? 🫣 Because I can think of a couple of times you've pounced on me for what I thought were innocuous comments. Actually, I like your idea of just not saying anything to each other at all and allowing me to post in peace as well 👋
@burninmylight
I have no problem with you and I apologize that I've been cantankerous toward you in the past ✌️
I've complained a few times about the paltry fighting game offerings on the Switch...so to be greeted by THIS near the end of Switch support...I mean, it's crazy on multiple levels. The grouping of these specific games is already crazy. But to FINALLY have easy access to MVC 2, and to also have it as a Switch option...it's beyond belief. Just crazy beyond words.
I already see my Switch as a valuable console that's worth keeping for many years. The addition of MVC 2 only strengthens that.
No longer do i have to emulate any of these games. MvC2 has been a want for the last several years. Day 1 purchase for sure.
@LadyCharlie Same. It's so heartening to see this collection.
@Xbox_Dashboard
"Is there a snowballs chance in hell at getting Panzer Dragoon Saga nd Burning Rangers Remastered for Switch? I love me some good Saturn stuff."
you and me both, and I'd love a chance to own those games in particular, but I wager there's exactly one snowball's chance in Hell of getting them on switch. ✌️
@T317
"I've complained a few times about the paltry fighting game offerings on the Switch..."
I want Tekken Tag Tournament U, Soul Calibur, and Virtua Fighter on Switch and I see no reason at all that it's a bad idea or not possible ☹️
@LadyCharlie Xbox was the only thing it wasn't announced for.
@-wc- I do too, and I can't imagine it's too late to make them happen. One is a port, SC II HD already exists, and...not sure about Virtua Fighter to be honest, I don't keep up with that series. But all would be great additions.
@T317
yes indeed! I wonder constantly where in the world the "virtua fighter trilogy" collection of the first 3 games is... (also sega rally anyone?) I just dont know what these companies are waiting for. the time is NOW, while people are still around that remember these games and care.
@Anti-Matter yeah the Punisher in the comics is pretty much an assassin/street level vigilante after his family is killed (usually mob related killings). Pretty good in the daredevil Netflix show also.
One of the highlights of the Direct.
So happy that the Marvel VS games are getting a rerelease.
So many good memories with these games.
Although Punisher is not a fighting game but is a really cool beat'em up.
We have been using a pair of Hori Mini Fighting Sticks when playing Capcom Arcade Stadium: great experience. Had been hoping for these games to appear in the third iteration of Arcade Stadium, but will consider this release instead.
Direct version trailer: "Enjoy your favorite music in the music player!"
Me: "Here it goes..."
Trailer o/ GONNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE o/
As inevitable as a Peter Griffin Surfin' Bird reference.
LOL
I actually lost my mind when I saw this in the direct, because I theorized Capcom doing this before... AND THEY DID IT.
Alongside Mario & Luigi: Brothership, this was by far my favorite announcement of the direct. Hell, this collection was even approved by TCNick3 of YouTube fame! And he's never even played a single Marvel vs. Capcom game before!
@Fallingshadow The home versions of these games didn't feature much other than a few more modes and a shop where you could purchase more characters. In Children of the Atom you could still play Akuma but not Magneto or Juggernaut; however, both Magneto and Juggernaut were made playable by default in its sequel, Marvel Super Heroes. By Marvel vs. Capcom 2 every characters from previous games except maybe Apocalypse and Onslaught were the only two still unplayable which shouldn't surprise anyone as both are unbalance and are spam characters anyways.
@HammerGalladeBro, is there a physical switch release? I hope so.
@mariokirby485 at least the Japanese Nintendo Direct website mentions a physical version
@Serpenterror @mariokirby485
https://www.nintendo.com/jp/nintendo_direct/20240618/index.html#
The Marvel vs. Capcom part mentions パッケージ版 (package version), that stands for physical version. That's one thing I like about the Japanese Directs, they mention if a game is getting a physical version when they show the release date/window.
Cannot speak for sure about the western versions, but considering there was a physical version of Capcom Fighting Collection, I don't see why it would be different for the Marvel vs. Capcom one. Unless Marvel/Disney was like "lolno only digital".
I never ever expected to see such a collection - truly a dream come true!!
I played the majority of these on my Saturn and PS2 years ago, and really missed them. And the Punisher beat ‘em up will be a real treat to finally try.
Please Capcom, give these classics a proper physical release!
@HammerGalladeBro
Hey thanks for linking that Nintendo JP page! It does indeed say a パッケージ版 {packaged version) is on the way in Japan in 2024. So I will most certainly import a copy if we get snubbed here in N. America.
@Fallingshadow The only one serious omission in this collection is Norimaro. He was removed due to license issues, probably.
@Serpenterror Norimaro was removed completely. Even from the main artwork. I really wanted to play the game as him... Sigh
On Ranker.com, nearly 10,000 people have voted on a list of
"The Greatest Fighting Games Ever Made".
Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes is #2
(behind only Street Fighter III: Third Strike)
A while ago I googled around for lists of the best beat 'em up games. I looked for lists at least 25 games long. I found 5 qualifying lists. I ended up with 58 unique games.
The Punisher ended up tied for the #10 best beat 'em up.
At the time it was said to be "the goriest arcade game since Mortal Kombat".
It's nice to see the punisher finally released for consoles, it should be in capcom beat em up collection. Now I can play it both on my analogue pocket and switch 😃
If only the joy-cons had a D-Pad. As it is I’ll buy this for my PS4.
Grab this quick before the license expires
@Blofse I dont know if this was answered already but this version of MvC2 seems to be the one from arcade, meaning all characters are already unlocked from the start. Dont take my word for granted since there is still mystery about what they changed or not.
@Mommar Yeah, so I saw. Well, Switch and Steam it is then.
Is this the first console release of The Punisher since the Genesis port (which I hear was not very good but remained in high demand since it was the only official means to play at home)?
@KingMike you are correct
@-wc- This will be my last post addressed to you.
I found another one that sums up why the arcade versions are superior (outside of missing characters) in the first three minutes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTf_A1qthts&t=181s[/url]
Speaking of characters missing from the arcade versions, this video confirms that they are be added to the ports in this collection. The only character that will not be available is Norimaro from Marvel Super Heroes; which is not the worst thing in the world for us Westerners, who never had access to him to begin with.
Lastly, we'll be able to switch between Japanese and international versions of each game. So this collection really is going to be the definitive way to play these games going forward.
@burninmylight
Thanks for that. I'm aware that arcade ports in the 90's tended to have performance compromises when ported to home consoles. OTOH, some ports end up sounding and/or looking better than they did in the arcade, especially if time passes between arcade release and ports. (I've "been around the whole time" as it were and had most of the major consoles as they came out, fwiw.)
The Dreamcast port is essentially arcade perfect (the video you linked says so in so many words) and adds features like 4p mode, and these are the kind home port enhancements I'd like to see on these compilations in general.
Thanks for clarifying your position, I hope that I've managed to do the same.
See you around! If there's a next time, I hope I have the presence if mind to attempt a healthier interaction. ✌️
PS - I genuinely don't remember the past negative encounters you speak of between us but I believe you and I always strive to hear feedback good and bad (I struggle with both) and better myself going forward. so here goes.
@HammerGalladeBro, Oh I see. Well, thank you.
@miwa The Punisher was ported to the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) years ago. It wasn’t arcade-perfect though.
@DrDaisy I've never played the Genesis port, but it does look like a (understandably) inferior version to the arcade original.
This release gives me hope that we'll get AvP at some point as well!
@DrDaisy The reason why the Sega Genesis version of the Punisher wasn't arcade perfect was cause it wasn't handle by Capcom. Instead Capcom hired Sculptor Software (same dev that port Mortal Kombat 1 & 2 to Super NES) to do the job and they kinda try. It just didn't turn out that good. Reason why Capcom games like The Punisher, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Forgotten World, and Merc are not handle by Capcom was cause Capcom were still bound by Nintendo's contract that won't allow them to make games for other consoles as long as they still partner with Nintendo. This is why a lot of Genesis Capcom ports feels kinda jank or not as good cause Capcom didn't make them, only third party did so the quality varied.
@Vyacheslav333 Well Capcom can't include a character they never own so I guess if you want to play as him you'll just had to seek out the original Japanese Saturn or PS1 copy of the Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter game.
@Serpenterror do your research buddy, Xmen cota, Akuma can be played in all Saturn versions and Juggernaut can be played in the USA or JP not EU in versus mode.
Akuma, Juggernaut, Magneto can be used in the PS1 version in versus mode.
As for Norimaro he was never seen outside of the Japanese release of MSH vs SF this is because Marvel did not like the character. Some of his moves where even censored in the jp arcade release as Marvel where so unhappy with him. Yes their where some extra rights around him he is technically a street fighter character.
@Vyacheslav333 Saturn X-men versus street fighter has extra speed settings and addition colour sets not found in the arcade version
As someone that has played x-men cota since it was first released in the arcades and got the games on saturn when they came out I know plenty about this series. It annoys me when people don't do their research.
@Fallingshadow I haven't said anything about X-Men vs STREET FIGHTER.
@Serpenterror I think Capcom still published Punisher on Genesis so I doubt the choosing of the developer for that port had anything to do with Nintendo.
