Well this is a welcome surprise! Publisher Dotemu and developer Leikir Studio have today announced that the much anticipated Metal Slug Tactics will be blasting its way onto Switch this Fall (or Autumn, if you'd like).
This one was actually revealed at E3 back in 2021 and was subsequently hit with delays before going silent in recent months. But hey, now we have a release window and a new trailer to go alongside it.
If Metal Slug Tactics has passed you by, let's give a brief refresher. As the name suggests, this one sees the iconic side-scrolling shooter series given the isometric tactical treatment. You'll have to build a roster from familiar Metal Slug faces and call on your troops' unique skills on the battlefield to defeat foes and take down bosses.
All of this is wrapped up in some positively scrumptious-looking pixel art and a rocking soundtrack from Shredder's Revenge and Sonic Mania composer, Tee Lopes. You can find a full list of the game's features and more closely inspect the visuals below.
- Discover the first tactical RPG of the METAL SLUG Series
- Experience a huge replayability with its die-and-retry roguelite progression
- Enjoy amazing pixel art graphics, a heartfelt tribute to the series
- Battle Morden’s Army in 110 hand-crafted maps and 20 different mission types
- Choose between 9 iconic characters from the series and create the perfect team
- Bring the perfect setup for every mission with 36 different weapons and 176 weapon mods
- Experiment with 36 loadouts and combos to outsmart your enemies
- Challenge iconic bosses from the METAL SLUG universe
- Headbang all the way with an amazing soundtrack by Tee Lopes
It might not be the precise release date that many of us have been eagerly anticipating, but a release window is better than nothing! We'll be keeping our eyes peeled for more Metal Slug Tactics news over the coming months.
What do you make of the new trailer? Will you be picking this one up this Fall? Blast your thoughts in the comments below.

This looks insane! Day 1 for me man!
Looks awesome! Can't wait.
Finally! I’d almost forgot about this. I’m not really a strategy fan, but as long as it reviews well, I’ll be adding Metal Slug Tactics to my Switch library for sure. The pixel art is insane!
Nice! Been waiting forever on this one.
It's looking better! Let's see how it ends up, but from what I see so far, it looks promising.
I've been waiting on this game for YEARS and fall can't come soon enough
I've never finished any Metal Slug game for one reason or another despite enjoying the ones I've played (mostly in arcades, but also a GBA one I think) between their art style, characters etc. so I'm definitely up for a tactical game based on the series and even more so after watching this trailer - and regardless, happy we finally have a date!
Been waiting almost 3 years for an update! Glad it’s still alive and looking forward to it
Nice. I'd bet good money this game will be excellent.
Yes! Held onto hope and now it’s on the way!
Ah, I had completely forgotten about this! Looking forward to it.
The art is beautiful! If they nail the gameplay this is looking like day 1 for me too
I thought this had been canceled or something, no news for forever but glad its finally coming out.
Finally! Thought they forgot about this one!
Looks lovely... will buy
The sprite works are amazing, I'm glad SNK and Dotemu are sticking with 2D for this one. Tactical RPG combat game should always remain 2D to keep that retro charm.
Yay? I don't see a reason to celebrate, and it's still annoying that there's no concrete date. Means it might get pushed again.
So much bobbing up and down xD
Did you say Tee Lopes?
I would love to buy this, but that would mean directly supporting a tyrant and despot guilty of human atrocities. SNK is still owned by Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman .
Silent Hill 2, R-Type Tactics, and this, Metal Slug Tactics, are my most anticipated games at the moment.
I’m so happy we finally have a release window or whatever. It’s been dead silent as the article mentioned and this is just great news!
Ok this is one of those games I couldn't give a darn about till I saw the trailer and Tee Lopes lops is doing the music? I need it! I want to play it so bad!
One of those weird ppl who isn't that much of a metal slug fan of the mainline series. But this DOES tickle my fancy and is my kinda genre.
Wow, I pretty much assumed this game was vaporware after hearing nothing the past couple of years. Looking forward to it!
I really like this kinda game and the cute-tough pixel art style is gorgeous. If it reviews well I might pick it up!
I love these types of games, love the art style too and hey it's metal slug! Gonna pick this one up!
@LEGEND_MARIOID I was right there with you regarding the mainline games until I was able to pick one up via Arcade Archives. It's amazing what having infinite credits does for an old-school quarter-munching arcade game. Becomes great fun rather than just a means to quickly run out of money at the arcade.
I was cool on Metal Slug Tactics when it was announced, but after playing tons of Into the Breach, I'm excited for it. The Metal Slug OST's are always fire, and the pixel art looks very faithful. Still hoping for a new mainline game though...
@BeefSanta Do you buy American-made games?
@Axecon
I think they just want to be flexible because we don’t know the fall release schedule. A week can make a huge difference.
@BeefSanta SNK Playmore is not own by the Saudi prince, they are backed by the Saudi prince (as well as other investors). It's no different from you backing a project on Kickstarter. The Saudi prince bought a large stock in the company, that is it. Other than that the Saudi prince had no real say in how to run the company. Also Dotemu and Leikir are not run by SNK anyways, they are making this game with permission by SNK so SNK themselves aren't even developing this. You literally complained about nothing.
@Serpenterror "In April 2022, MiSK Foundation acquired 96% ownership of the Japanese video game company SNK." You want to guess who founded MiSK? You think SNK doesn't get a share of the profits from the game and are letting them use their IP out of the goodness of their hearts?
@RunninBlue your whataboutism is weak, friend. Does the US govt or US individual who committed war crimes own a 96% controlling stake in a major video game company?
This game has piqued my interest. Looks great.
@BeefSanta Your brainwashing is similarly weak. If you buy American, you buy games from companies with Blackrock and Vanguard in their shareholders. They fuel wars so that the “defense” companies they are invested in can turn a profit. They are evil.
Don’t be a hypocrite.
And don’t use made up words that mean nothing and were trendy 10 years ago.
@RunninBlue "If you buy American, you buy games from companies with Blackrock and Vanguard in their shareholders". Such as?
@BeefSanta https://www.slickcharts.com/blackrock
Go your hardest.
And if you use anything from Youtube to Coca Cola to an iPhone and just about anything else, I suggest you go live in a cave if you want to stay true to your morals.
Looks like Advance Wars. Seems interesting. Will try to keep it in mind.
Looking good hope it go's on cartridge
Did not think you game was ever going to come out
very glad it is 😊
Fantastic news! Now if we can just get Anthology on Switch.
@RunninBlue yes I'm aware of that page and do what I >reasonably< can to avoid products with many of those companies. Obviously, I recognize that on some level these corps are unavoidable in daily life ("no ethical consumption under capitalism") but something like this game is an easy choice: Black Rock has trivial percentages in hundreds of companies; MiSK has 96-97% of SNK. If your argument is "other thing bad, so it's okay to ignore this bad thing because I want it", that's weak and you know it. Rationalize your purchase to yourself however you want, but you DO have a choice at least some of the time.
@BeefSanta Of course it’s the individual’s choice. I wasn’t the one proclaiming my altruistic tendencies to a video game website.
My point is, if your intentions are genuine, then there are waaaaaay more destructive companies and evil individuals than current flavour of the month, MBS that you could and should focus your attention on. But, people seem to develop selective outrage about these things based on what they are fed in their social media and/or “news” feed.
Anyway, you do you and I’ll do me, but I will continue to point out hypocrisies and double standards when I see them.
It should be noted that there will be a PC demo available from June 10th to 17th!
lmao "hypocrisy"... as if I ever said other companies were not problematic 🙄
