This is it, the final epic showdown of Metroid Dread and hooooboy, it's a tough one. Raven Beak is a fast and powerful opponent with hard-hitting attacks who can cover the full battle arena very quickly, so going into this one prepare to have your Flash Shift and Space Jump skills tested to the max.
There are three very definite phases to this fight, the first of which will give you a decent grounding in timings and how to defend against moves that make a reappearance in the final phase. Phase two is the real kicker here though, with a whole new set of problems that will only be remedied with good old-fashioned practice.
Buckle up and let's jump in and find out how to take this bird-brained bad boy down.
Metroid Dread Raven Beak Final Boss Battle Strategy
Raven Beak: Phase One
Coming into this first phase can be a little overwhelming as Raven Beak moves quickly and has quite a few moves that he's not shy about using. The first thing to look out for are his charging attacks, signalled by a reddish glow and shoulder drop, you do not want to get hit by these or forced into the corner as he'll trap you and give you a combo of hard hits that do a good amount of damage. We want to keep our distance here, always be ready to juggle yourself up into the air, spinning and dodging from one side of the arena to the other.
As much as keeping your distance gives you the time to fire off your missiles and get damage in, you also need to be ready for a laser attack that Raven Beak unfolds in a huge arc that comes down over the entire arena. We've pictured it below and as soon as you see this starting you need to get right in close to him, give him two shots of your launcher and then very quickly dodge back as his move ends, dodge back as far as you can and wall jump up into the air for good measure so he can't follow you with a charge attack.
The next move we need to look out for is a black orb that he shoots in your direction. This thing does big damage if it connects but it moves slowly and is most important as a means of refilling your missiles, shoot it four times to burst it open and grab some restocks.
What we really want to look out for in this phase is a huge laser sonic boom that he'll wind up so you know it's coming, when you see this incoming quickly get yourself into a morph ball to avoid it and Raven Beak will then come charging in for an attack that you can parry - watch for that golden glint - and get a massive shot in at his head that grants you rockets and health refills.
Once you've done this, Raven Claw will begin to glow gold and resume his normal patterns of attack, keep getting your missile shots in on him and he'll eventually stop and laugh and beckon you forward with his hand. Run at him and prepare to counter not once but twice, which will now send you into a pretty cool mini cutscene where you both go at it, resulting in Samus busting off a bit of his armour. It's now time for phase two.
Raven Beak: Phase Two
Raven Beak has got wings now and things are going to get a little more tricky.
This phase is all about a 360-degree machinegun attack that Raven Claw performs from the air. If you're going to get through this part of the scrap you need to be able to use your space jumps and dashes proficiently to avoid this attack by keeping ahead of his weapon's fire as you circle around him in the air and then onto the ground. As soon as you hit the ground during this attack, blast him with your regular laser fire a few times then prepare to circle round again, you don't have time for missiles, just get three hits in and go again. It takes a bit of getting used to, we had to reload this fight plenty of times to get the hang of it but, once you have this part of phase two down the rest is actually fairly easy.
Besides the machinegun attack you have a ground pound which is easy to avoid and well signalled, as soon as you see it coming dash back as much as you can, and a sideways dashing attack which you need to slide under. Raven Claw will also fire off a great big laser but this is easy to bait in order to get it to hit where you're stood as it winds up and then dodge at the last second so it misses. All of these attacks give you plenty of time to fire off a salvo of missiles when you dodge them properly so this is the time during this phase that you're going to do him real damage.
Once you've damaged Raven Claw enough here, snapping off one of his wings, he'll be returned to the ground for the final phase.
Raven Beak: Phase Three
This is it, don't get scared now! The final phase of this fight incorporates all of the moves from the first phase - there is no more air machinegun, thankfully - and adds a massive laser blast which is easy to bait by jumping into the air so he shoots high while you drop down and blast him with missiles. The other addition and the most important element to your survival here is a huge golden orb that Raven Claw will fire out. When you see this orb turn to Morph Ball and let rip with a Power Bomb. This will shatter the orb and gives you ammo and health stocks!
There's no real secret to phase three beyond repeating what you already know from phase one, watching out for that new laser attack and exploding the golden orb with a powerbomb every time it appears. Once you've dealt with the orb a handful of times you'll enter the final cutscene. Congratulations, you've defeated Raven Claw. Well...sort of...there's a little bit of extra to come after this main battle but nothing that needs a guide so we won't be spoiling it for you. Enjoy the game's final moments and well done!

I really hate that this was in my feed, description, picture and all. Thanks for the spoilers nintendolife! two sarcastic thumbs up.
I'm blocking nintendolife from my google news feed because of this article. Maybe wait until the game has been out a week before posting articles about the ending
The game has been out like 14 hours, y'all should have bought and beat it by now.
Yup... Was also in my news feed... Huge spoiler and will be blocking Nintendolife stories now unfortunately....
I wish you had posted this earlier.
Wow. Haven't even received my copy yet (thanks Best Buy) and here's a picture and name of the final boss battle on my news feed. Thanks guys.
Created an account here just to say thank you so much for spoiling the final boss of a game I've been waiting nearly 20 years to play. It came out yesterday! You couldn't have at least not mentioned his name or picture? I wake up to this on my home feed and chucked my phone across the room. Thanks so much guy. Never going on nintendo life again, who reviewed this?
Another victim of the Google Newsfeed here. Don't know if y'all have much control of the matter, but wow that sucked.
Thanks you utter morons.
Will be unsubbing to Nintendolife
@Waluigi I mean to be fair, this guy was clearly the final boss from the first cutscene f the game. I wouldn't call this a spoiler. He doesn't exactly come out of nowhere. It's pretty clear that this is the guy before you can even play the game. They didn't actually spoil the twist of the game so no harm I see.
Literally only created an account so I could join the choir stating how much of a dick move it is to create an article like this so early in the games lifespan with the final bosses name in the headline, and that I will also now be joining the group of people blocking Nintendo Life from their news feed to avoid spoilers like this again. Way to go PJ.
Came to say I feel for those who got spoiled here. I avoided looking at any news feeds in fear for this happening, and I'm glad I beat the game before I saw any of this.
@Xansies The thing here is that there could have been more to the story and a twist happens to make it so that Raven's Beak wasn't the final boss. Everyone knew he was a threat you'd probably have to take down since the first cutscene of the game, sure, but that doesn't mean it was going to be obvious he's the final boss. Even if they didn't spoil the (numerous) twist(s), I think it's still not that tasteful to have an article like this display name or picture for maybe a month or so tbh. If people want to know about how to defeat this boss, they'll search it up themselves anyway.
@Richnj There can be reasons as to why people haven't gotten around to it yet. Some ordered physical copies from stores that haven't yet shipped it out. Some have prior commitments they needed to take care of to get around to the game. I'd be more sympathetic to a comment like this if it were maybe a month or two past release, you still haven't gotten the game, and are worried about spoilers, and even then, circumstances happen
@Xansies whether its obvious or not you generally dont plop the name and face of the final boss in everyones newsfeed. You know you'll always be fighting Bowser at the end of a Mario game but it's nice to preserve the final form
How is this article allowed to be on Nintendolife? You're literally spoiling the end of a game that hasn't even been out that long yet. Christ, you seem to have two brain cells competing for third place, PJ.
@Richnj not sure if you're being sarcastic or just ignorant. If you're being serious, please try to find some common sense.
Edit: This makes me happy that I don't turn on ads on your website. Gaming journalism is already a bit of a joke, but this takes the cake.
@G_M @treechenho It was sarcasm.
I was alluding to the fact that you would have to had gotten the game early, or started playing it at midnight in order to beat it before this article released.
@Richnj my bad then. It's hard to tell over text like this and I also felt like it could have been but I wasn't too sure
@treechenho Yeah, I think socially I was obligated to put "/s" at the end, but the absolute absurdity of expecting people to have played and finished, or be finishing, the brand new game on the day of release just felt like it was enough when I typed it.
But, then, there are those who are like that, so...
To all those commenting regarding spoilers: this article is marked as hidden on all of our feeds around the website, so you won't see it on the homepage news feed. This was deliberate as we wanted to avoid spoilers for anyone visiting our site.
However, it appears that if you are viewing a feed on Google News (a third party website/platform) then this page appears... something that we can't control when other sites pick up our articles.
That being said, we'll see if it is technically possible to prevent/stop/block Google from including this kind of article within in Google News feeds going forward as this is the first time we've heard of it being an issue.
@NintendoLife thanks for responding Nintendolife.I've bookmarked the /news so it appeared when I went there also (still there now). is there not a way of keeping them from the news feed entirely? it's not really news after all. x
I have to say, this fight is the straw that broke the camel's back for me. This fight is antithetical to the series' design philosophy. Mercury steam does not understand metroid. I thought they did for the 3/4 of dread, and I enjoyed it. But I cannot overstate just how horrible this last portion is.
As far as this guide goes, you should perhaps mention how he cannot be damaged in any way except for countering him when he is glowing gold in the first phase, and can only be damaged during that counter (meaning it can take a few counters to get it done), thus pigeon holing players into only one way of approaching the boss, instead of using their literal arsenal of weapons, and how he has melee attacks that cannot be countered. And what are you talking about, the black orb taking 4 shots? It can take 5 full storm missile barrages and not break, over a dozen regular beam shots, 5 regular missiles, or 2 charge beam shots (all I ever had time to get in on it), and not break. The only reliable method I found was dropping a super bomb.
@Chrona I'm not quite sure what you mean about not damaging him outside of counters. Your missiles damage him all throughout the fight, otherwise he'd never reach the counter stage or phase where he turns gold. If you don't attack him none of these things will occur. As far as the black orb is concerned, I've played through the fight a lot and it takes exactly four missile shots to take down. The Power Bomb is used for the gold orb but yeah, if you have enough spare, using it on the black orb would also work. It's a tough fight!
@Waluigi thanks and no problem. We've now updated our CMS so that guides like this are also hidden from the /news page along with the /timeline page (and any other listing) to try and avoid spoilers. It's also hidden from the feed that Google News crawls, but the page will still get spidered by Google, so can't be 100% certain it will avoid it appearing in Google News, but that's about all we can do it stop it. Thanks for your understanding!
@PJOReilly During the first phase, You do not need to shoot him in order for him to reach gold. He will eventually go into the large blast after a certain amount of time, or if you counter him on a different move. And once he is gold, he can only be damaged during the counters.
You are also right about the missiles and the orb, I had been unlucky in that they had always hit me before being destroyed by the 4th missile before. Unfortunately, the game never mentions that the storm missiles are weaker than regular missiles, despite using more.
I can't believe NintendoLife went and spoiled the final boss for me. I didn't even know this game had a final boss. I'm going to write my senator.
@chrona I am not sure if he eventually reaches gold on his own, but attacking him certainly changes his color faster and moves it along. I have gotten him gold within a minute. So really you seem to just be ranting for no good reason.
@Dissident You seem to have completely missed the point: the point is that, once AT gold, he can not be harmed by any method other than countering. Frankly, if they had removed that aspect, I would have loved this fight.
@chrona that is 100% not true. After gold, he takes a certain amount of damage before the counter "takes". Yes, he must be countered to move to phase 2 but the missile damage matters. If I damage him a lot first, only one counter is needed. If I don't as much, it has taken up to 3 times. Are you just really bad at countering? Trying to figure out why you are having a tantrum.
@Dissident
I just beat him, and you can hear the difference in missiles when he turns gold. It sounds like they aren't doing damage, and it's just a dodge game till the next counter. I would love to see a debug mode fight with him that shows his hp as it drops, to settle this lol
@Waluigi wtf, How is this a spoiler???... Its the obvious final boss, that appeared in the very first cut scene of the game....
Its like complaining when Thanos appeared on the poster of Avengers...
@Zequio bro, maybe you havent read the whole thread. At the time of the comment the article had a pic of the boss too. Its pretty clear that this guy is bad news at the begining of the game, it takes all your powers, but that doesnt neccessarily mean it''ll have the same form in the final battle and there's even a possibility it could all be a big misunderstanding and the thing is actually a pal (Knuckles rocks you at the begining of Sonic 3 and now hes a pal for life). Long story short, this article removed the possibilities I personally enjoy imagining as I play a game. Nintendo Life have made it right and changed the image now, I just think you're a bit late to the party. x
Lol, all you saying that this article is a spoiler, that's like saying it's a spoiler to tell someone that Bowser is the final boss in a Mario game. Like isn't this what you expected the second you started playing the game???
I’ve been stuck trying to beat Raven Beak for seven days and I’m simply going to give up. This boss is impossible for me to beat and has completely ruined my enjoyment of the game. After four hours worth of attempts today alone, I’m done. The higher tier valkyries in God of War were the same and made me quit that game too.
@PJOReilly Just came back to this page after beating the game to research this very topic as I had beaten him solely with melee counters in the first phase and I wanted to see if anyone else had managed to damage him without them. I had originally tried shooting him with beam attacks and missiles, but it didn't seem like they were actually damaging him so I assumed that his glowing shield was nullifying damage during the entire first phase and decided to wait and see if there was a Melee Counter opportunity.
And there is, if you simply wait he'll eventually charge up a claw swipe that you can Melee Counter, and after about 2-4 successful counters he'll enter the second phase. I probably ended up taking longer than usual doing it this way, but you do not need to damage him to trigger it, he'll do so himself every so often.
I also managed to beat him without knowing that you could blow up the golden orb with a Power Bomb (I'm kicking myself for not thinking of that when I was fighting him, but in my defense the game rarely makes use of the Power Bombs because it's the last upgrade). That's not necessary to finish the fight either as the article seems to suggest, although it does make the fight much easier than having to dodge all of the shockwaves it releases. Like with the first phase, he'll eventually just charge up a claw swipe attack that you can Melee Counter (although it's a bit harder to recognize this time because he also has a Speed Booster-esque charge attack in this phase) and the battle will again end after 2-4 successful counters. You could also probably just damage him with regular old attacks until he falls, but that would probably take forever and take a ton of skill to pull off (this might be a great challenge for those that want something tougher).
@Bolt_Strike Definitely a more hardcore way of doing things. It's already a tough fight doing it my way!
@NintendoLife people really never change. Don't mind them, thanks for the post! ♥️
