The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack adds an additional paid tier to the standard Nintendo Switch Online service. Right now, it can only be added on a 12-month basis (as opposed to the regular service, which can be purchased for shorter subscription periods), and in this guide we'll outline the details.
On this page: Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Price, Games And Features
Do I Need Nintendo Switch Online To Get The Expansion Pack?
Yes, the expansion pack can only be added to the base service. We have an extensive guide on Nintendo Switch Online available below.
What is the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack?
The latest addition to the service adds an expanding range of Nintendo 64 and SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis titles to their respective apps (these are listed below).
In addition, it provides access to the Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise DLC expansion, as well as the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass and the Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion.

How much does it cost?
The price varies depending on how you choose to pay, below (for information) is the standard Nintendo Switch Online pricing.
Standard Nintendo Switch Online pricing
12 Months | 3 Months | 1 Month | Annual Family Membership (up to 8 users) |
---|---|---|---|

There's also a family membership option that provides Nintendo Switch Online to up to eight Switches for £31.49 / $34.99 per year. That's less than £5 / $5 per user if eight people are signed up.
The Expansion Pack can be added to subscriptions by existing members, with a "pro rated discount depending on the number of days remaining in your current membership". Below are the prices for new customers taking the combined Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, with the expansion only available in a 12-month package.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack pricing

$49.99 / €39,99 / £34.99 | $79.99USD / €69,99 / £59.99 |
What games are included?
The Expansion Pack adds a range of Nintendo 64 and SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis titles. You can find the full (and regularly updated list) below:
As previously mentioned, you will also have access to the Animal Crossing: New Horizons DLC expansion, Happy Home Paradise, the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC tracks, and Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion DLC.
Note. You will need to have purchased the base game to access this DLC as part of your Expansion Pack subscription.
As mentioned above, the Expansion Pack is bought in 12-month chunks, so for that period as a minimum, you'll be able to play that DLC without buying it.
Do I need to buy the NSO Nintendo 64 or Mega Drive / Genesis controllers?
The exclusive N64 and Genesis controllers released by Nintendo are a great way to get the most out of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, but they are not absolutely essential.
SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis games will, of course, work perfectly with your Switch Joy-Con or Pro Controller, as the game inputs are much simpler. So you may not wish to stump up the extra cash for the kidney-shaped joypad.
Playing N64 games on the Switch is more of a challenge using Switch controllers, however, as the function to remap buttons is not present on Nintendo Switch Online. For instance, to access the N64 C-buttons you will have to hold down one of the shoulder buttons on your Switch controllers.
It's entirely possible to play with Joy-Con or a Pro Controller. However, if you're an N64 veteran, you may find it less than ideal, so it might be worth picking up the dedicated N64 controller if you can find one in stock.

So, How Do I Sign Up?
For new members, the NSO + Expansion Pack option is now easy to find on the eShop, with information in the 'Nintendo Switch Online' app that can be found on the Switch home screen. Upgrading is also relatively simple, with the system detecting your existing NSO account and applying the relevant discounts.
You can also buy a membership from certain retailers. You'll receive a code which can then be redeemed on your Nintendo Switch:

What Happens If I Don't Renew For A Second Year?
If you don't renew the Expansion Pack (or the broader Nintendo Switch Online service) you won't be able to access and play the Nintendo 64 or SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis apps.
In terms of Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise, if you have been playing it via the Expansion Pack but then cancel, you'll lose access to the archipelago and all of those activities, but you will retain some features on your own island that were unlocked as part of that DLC. Nintendo's explanation is below.
Players can still continue to access certain things they have unlocked in Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise on their main island, including adding counters, partition walls, as well as adding ambient lighting and soundscapes, even if their access to Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise is suspended. However, it will not be possible to visit the archipelago if players lose access to the DLC. To be able to visit the archipelago and take on requests of designing vacation homes again, you will need to purchase the DLC separately or renew the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership
That's it for now with this guide, once the service is live we'll share more information on how to upgrade and more. As always drop your questions below, too!

This isn't such a bad deal when you think about it. It is a little over 4 dollars a month and you do get Genesis and N64 games. I know a lot of people think it is too high and that is your right to think so, but I think it isn't such a bad deal. The DLC is what jacks up the price. I do think they should've had an option to get it without the DLC to lower the price and let people choose a DLC of their choice, but it isn't that bad of a deal. If you ask me.
I’m excited to get my n64 controller to play the games. I’m not feeling the mapping of the controls as they are and wish they’d allow some modifications.
If anyone is looking to join a family group with the N64 expansion tier to cut costs, as of the time of writing there is a final slot in my group up for grabs. Check my profile for my email and get in touch if interested. Signed up today so the full 12 months starts here.
@AG_Awesome You can change the mapping in the system settings menu of your Switch
@gcunit I am up for that. My subscription ends next week. I am off to work now but I'll message you when I get home.
Nintendo still haven't explained the difference between purchasing HHP DLC for $25 straightly and getting HHP via NSO Expansion Pack.
In other word, getting HHP by purchasing for $25 = you owned the DLC
But if you getting HHP from NSO Expansion Pack = you just only rent HHP, not owning the DLC
@sanderev Not with a PowerA controller sadly. Even though they're licensed by Nintendo.
Loving Mario Kart 64! Feel it holds up better than the SNES version which hasn't aged too well.
I paid exactly $32.79 to upgrade. Yea, that is more expensive than I was expecting but I'm not nearly as upset about it as others.
I'll play a ton of the AC DLC (and still buy it a few years from now when I worry about Switch Online shutting down) and I already spent 2 hours last night playing Mario Tennis.
Wait, you can pay monthly instead of annual? I couldn't find that option anywhere. Only option I see is to pay for the annual membership and no way is that happening with what they have to offer.
@Anti-Matter I'm happy to rent it. Don't see myself playing the Happy Home expansion for years on end. Also just so you know if you take the Happy Home design tools back to your island they will remain on your island once you stop renting it.
Anyone else gone to CDkeys, bought two years of Standard Family membership (29% off) and then traded that in plus a little extra to get a discount on this? Think I paid about £49 all in.
Will be signing up for sure. Once I finish A few other games I'm playing right now.
@sanderev I know.
@JHDK Mario Tennis was the main reason I wanted the expansion pack! Still a great game. All of the N64 games look fantastic with their higher resolution. And the Genesis games don't have any input lag like the Classic Collection. Now the real question will the service be getting any Tetris 99 type games in the future?
I can't find the N64 or Mega Drive apps on the UK web eshop? Do you have to 'purchase' it on the console itself? Was hoping to start the download remotely while at work.
Is anyone else unable to reorganise the games on the N64 and mega drive apps?
You can do it on the NES and SNES and the option is written on the options for MD and N64 but you can’t actually reorganise.
When will the N64 controller restock, desperate for one now! (Not Ebay reselling desperate but you know)
The n64 games seem really lacking, if it had started with a much broader selection I'd of being more inclined to pick it up. At this cost it isn't worth it.
While I'm not too happy about certain settings not being available within the N64 app, like memory card support, a CRT filter, a stretch to widescreen option for later games to be potentially added to take advantage of it, like DK64, or perhaps more importantly, the option to map controls to your liking, I do like that N64 games each have their own control setup. Sin & Punishment feels like a dream to play!
It's not that 50€ per year is the end of the world, but Nintendo needs to understand what value means. The online infrastructure by itself is barebones, when we originally thought that the cost of it would improve the service. Instead, we get no improvement and an extra 30€ for playing a few 25 year old roms.
I learned the hard way that you can’t go from a family plan to a single plan + expansion pack. I had to pay to upgrade my family plan, which my wife and I were planning to downgrade.
Annoying. ….but yeah, I paid it, haha. I turned off auto renew so I can just get the single plan next year.
@norwichred I reorganized mine. Don’t you just press X?
I misunderstood the pro-rata part. I was expecting to pay a pro-rata cut of the upgrade fee and then roll in to the annual fee once it's all up for renewal, I guess it's more money in the bank for Nintendo this way. I'm also OK with the charge, I just wasn't expecting to pay over £50 today (my sub is up in early Jan). When you break it down £60 by 8 people for the year is OK. The whole system doesn't feel that modern, and this upgrade part doesn't seem handled that well, but if they use the funds to upgrade stuff then it's not so bad.
@geox30 Probably my biggest gripe with all of this. I would love VC on Switch but realistically, it will never happen. But I hate the fact that we are expected to pay for online when the experience is as shoddy now as it was when it was still free.
I will re-join when the N64 controller is available again, but i still think £35 is quite a lot for 12 months
@MS7000
Yeah, for me, and I guess for many people, the experience of the online as a service is what matters and what I would justify the cost. I have no interest for the games on offer, outside of maybe GBA and Gamecube, which are not there. We don't even have voice and chat and we probably never will.
@Ikana64 It's not a big download so you're not hurting that much having to wait.
@geox30
FYI NSO + Expansion Pack is €40 per year in Europe for the individual membership.
In the US, it's $50.
@michellelynn0976 thank you! Common sense!!!
So you have to go for the full 12 months? Well that's me out then as i only do 3 months at a time.
@Ikana64 you need to do a system update via the console settings
@westman98
Whatever, it is still 40€ more of the value it represents for me at least.
Anyone wanting to join a family group to get the expansion on the cheap please message me, I have 3 slots left on mine so happy to let people join if you can send the £7.50 via PayPal!
If you already have a family membership, you can't upgrade one account, you must upgrade the whole family membership.
That's just *****.
@geox30 I do wonder how many people would actually subscribe to this service if you didn't have to pay for online...
@MS7000 I wonder how many would subscribe if online play is all you get.
@Anti-Matter The article explains it in Nintendo's own words. If you get the DLC through the Expansion Pack, you are renting it or at least access to the archipelago islands and the ability to take request in designing homes. The stuff you unlock for your main island you get to keep. Of you buy it outright, you don't lose access to the archipelago portion and taking request to designing homes.
I still do not like how if you pay for an entire year of the service upfront, you are forced to "check in" every 7 days. Not cool if you are offline for an extended period of time.
Based on some datamining, it appears that 38 N64 and 52 Genesis games are planned for NSO + Expansion Pack as of right now.
Hopefully more titles are added, but 90 N64 + Genesis games isn't too bad as a start (and is a lot more than I was expecting).
The people buying individual subscription don’t like it. The people buying it joining family subscription Love it. Well worth the price.
We should all just start spelling it “Pak,” similarly to how most of us say “cartridge” when they’re clearly game cards... except the cartridge thing is a little cringe so maybe “Pack,” is fine, ha.
So wait, is it that you have to pay for your next year's membership with it, or do you have to pay the whole $50 just for the expansion pack?
Bought it as soon as I got home! It was $50CAD to upgrade with my remaining time left for the year. I'm going to be playing the Animal Crossing DLC too so it's worth it. Definitely a lot of game repetition already owning the All Stars pack and Genesis collection, but I'm holding out for Banjo!
@geox30 Isn't it 40€?
@Fighting_Game_Loser The $50 includes the base subscription.
@norwichred You can reorganize, its exactly like the NES / SNES apps, just press “Y” over a game and you can move it
@imgrowinglegs THIS!! I only got a Switch in March 2021 and it came with a free year Family Plan sub to NSO, which I was planning to downgrade to the individual plan next March once my sub was up. I assumed I’d just be able to add the Expansion Pack onto my Family Plan, and then move to an individual + exp after…. But no, only option was to pay for a whole year Family Plan to get it, or else you literally couldn’t get the Expansion. I was EXTREMELY frustrated at first, and despite being super excited to get the expansion since they announced and didn’t much care about the individual price, $99 + Tax CAD (minus $13 for the discount) was a bit more than I was looking to be forced to spend to get access to the N64 / Genesis stuff… I took an hour looking around online to see if there was some kind of work-around, but I literally didn’t even see anyone mentioning this caveat. In the end I just sucked it up and paid it, with the rationale that I’ve gotten the last 7 months of NSO for free so I don’t mind giving them a one-time Family Plan sub amount, hopefully they can use the money to improve the service / add more stuff.
@Fighting_Game_Loser you have to basically sign up for another full year at the time of getting it to get the base + expansion. They will discount whatever you have left on your current sub, but yeah. The crappy part is if you are currently in a family plan and were planning to drop down to an individual plan the end of your current sub (Like I was), you are unable to get the Expansion pass unless you are willing to re-sub to a Family Plan + Exp starting at the time of purchase, because the system literally doesn’t let you downgrade to an Individual Plan + Exp if you have a Family sub currently… so options are bite the bullet and pay for another 12 months of Family + exp, or you have no way of getting the Exp until your current sub is up, at which point you can downgrade to an individual + exp… that would have been 5 months of waiting for me, which I didn’t want… so they screwed money out of me, which I’m sure is exactly what they expected to be able to do.
I really don't understand the upgrade fee. I paid $35 about a month ago for my renewal. The new service is $80 so I'd expect to be charged less than $45 buy they're trying to charge me $49.99 plus taxes.
@OorWullie I'm so hot for your (getting in) touch. But you may have to be patient as I'm getting sleepy and still not got your email address. Once I have your email address I'll send you an invite for you to join when you like, but if I fall asleep it'll have to wait til tomorrow, sorry.
I am getting a bit of FOMO everytime I see these articles. If I hadn't already bought mario 64 and all the sega games on Switch and if I still played ACNH, the service would be worth it. Unfortunately its just not worth 30 bucks a year to rent the one game I don't already have and want.
Ironically this pack is good for long term Nintendo fans but less good for the really serious Nintendo fans who already bought most of what is offered.
Interesting thing about the pro-rated discount, it looks like if you happen to have 1000 days stacked up on the Individual Plan (roughly 2 years and 9 months) you get the expansion pack for FREE. Nintendo deducts $0.05US/day off the price up to the cost of the plan (it says in the fine print on the NSO page on your Switch). It’s good if you know you need online for at least that long (I need it for splatoon 3, for example). Once you do that, you can probably keep NSO+ topped up by renewing annually at your leisure.
Now it’ll be an even better value once they fix the N64 games and we see what games they have coming down the pipeline. How are the Genesis games running, by the way?
@gcunit im up for joining if there is still a space?
Don't get it, it's a ripoff
@Spoods Sorry for the slow reply, I've been low on internet access for the past couple of days. I have had one person ask me before you did, so I'm giving them first refusal on it, but I'll come back you next if they don't want it and you still do. Or if you want to get in a bidding war with them...
So the only way you can buy this is on the eShop and not like at GameStop or anything? Sounds a bit redundant if you ask me. Just like with eShop cards in stores, you could've easily bought the same card with a 16-digit code or something like that. Not buy $50 in eShop credit alone and doing it that way. That just seems a bit much for some
