Note: At the original time of publication, online functionality was not yet live for Nintendo Switch Sports. As it is such a crucial part of the game, we decided not to score this review until we can had sampled the full online experience. Having now done just that, here's our full updated (and scored) review.
When Wii Sports came out in 2006 it was nothing short of a revelation; beforehand video games had been all but relegated to buttons, knobs, and sticks as a means of controlling them, but the Nintendo Wii and its titular pack-in sports title bust that idea wide open. You all know the story — waggle waggle, tennis racquet moves, mum’s besotted, dodgy elbow next morning — but now Nintendo’s trying to have another pop at the formula (after Wii Sports Resort and we suppose Wii Sports Club) with Nintendo Switch Sports. It’s been 16 years, but are we looking at 16 years' worth of improvement?
Let’s cut to the chase: there’s no secret seventh game (although golf is coming soon), there’s the six games that are available at the start, and when it comes to local play that’s your lot. Whereas Wii Sports had the training modes that showed you how to play each sport through a variety of mini challenges, Nintendo Switch Sports just has a brief (and skippable) interactive tutorial that plays when you select a sport, but only for Chambara, Football, and Volleyball. If you’re in the dark on how to land a specific shot in Tennis, you’re out of luck.
Considering Wii Sports had the previously mentioned training modes for each sport, this is quite disappointing. It can’t be denied that the sports are simple to pick up and play, but this hinges on your being familiar with the sport it represents from the off. You’ll also not find a great deal of variety in how you can choose to play each sport. Some do have options and different ways to play which we’ll detail later on, but many only have a simple selection of three difficulties when playing against a CPU.
But let’s talk about the sports themselves — you know, the whole ‘game’ part of the game. Volleyball is a fairly slow affair, unfortunately. The ball moves at a glacial pace to allow players to time their shots more easily which is laudable in its intent, but ends up making the entire game a slog. No options to change how the game plays either, it’s the first team to five points and that’s your lot.
Badminton is the opposite, a quick-paced one-on-one bout where your accuracy and timing are critical. We had far more fun with this than we were expecting to; even though the concept and execution is simple, its pace and fluidity helped keep us interested. Unfortunately, like Volleyball there’s no options to adjust how the game plays, and no doubles mode either.
Bowling is (as it always has been in Nintendo’s sport games) an absolute delight. There’s something so satisfying about seeing the ball roll down the lane and clatter into the pins with that extra bit of spin that you put on the ball by twisting your wrist. Better still, the ‘Special’ mode throws a host of obstacles down your lane semi-randomly, forcing you to completely rethink how you’re going to get that ball of yours into those cheeky little pins at the back.
Football is the most involved sport by far. You have to run around using the left stick (gasp!) and use a variety of angled kicks in order to get that ball into the opponent’s goal. It’s a massively simplified and slowed-down affair compared to the real thing when it comes to movement, but it’s a decently good time only improved by the various options for play. You can do a 1v1, a standard 4v4, practice your little football socks off, or boot directly into the goal in the Penalty Shootout mode. It does feel a little unengaging at times — provided you’re not just chasing after the ball constantly like a five-year-old — but it’s still a decent laugh.
Chambara is an odd one, but by no means do we mean that in a bad sense. The premise is simple: attack your opponent to knock them back whilst avoiding their block attempts, and block their attacks to stop yourself being pushed off the edge. It’s the nuance that makes this all so interesting, though. You have three different weapons to choose from all with their own strengths and weaknesses, but the real fun is in goading and throwing off your opponent mentally. Essentially it’s poker without the risk of having your real-life legs broken.
And lastly we have Tennis. We don’t really know what to think of Tennis; the concept is fine in theory but the execution feels a bit lifeless. It’s similar to the Swing Mode in Mario Tennis Aces, except stripped back by several degrees. Nintendo claims that you can use a variety of shots when playing, but despite all our efforts we’ve only been able to perform forehand hits, backhand hits, and occasionally a lob when we were really trying. You’re also forced to play doubles in complete contrast to Badminton, which is fine in theory — after all, that's how Wii Sports did it — but when you’re controlling the net player as well as the back player it all feels a little forced. Throw in the lack of any major options besides the number of games (with no way to even play a full set) and what you’re left with is something that just feels a bit limp to us.
But whether a sport is good or not, it’s always heightened by adding additional players. Multiplayer is unsurprisingly the main draw of Nintendo Switch Sports, and even the lacklustre sports were notably more fun with other humans as opposed to playing solo. Yet having said that, even when playing with other people there's a distinct sense of 'is this it?' permeating the entire experience. If you want to play one of the six sports, you're golden. If you want anything to spice it up, you're more than likely going to be left wanting. We know we were.
This is reflected in what is clearly being pushed as the main attraction, online play. Playing against others online certainly helps to give more context to the sports on offer and their repetitive nature, much like how an online FPS is arguably the same gameplay repeated ad nauseam. However in the case of Nintendo Switch Sports, there's still just not enough variety to keep things interesting for anything longer than an hour or so. After enough games in an individual sport, you do unlock a basic ranking system in order to pair you up with more appropriately skilled players, but it changes nothing about the actual gameplay.
We won't deny for a moment that we had fun when playing against others online (when the lobbies weren't dominated by filler CPUs likely as a result of the game not being public in the review phase), but just like local play we felt that once we'd played each sport a few times, we'd seen all there was. Even something cosmetic such as multiple arenas for each sport or a token variation in gameplay (beyond Bowling's 'Special' lanes) would help, but as it stands it's too much of the same thing repeated over and over again.
Customisation is also a mixed affair. You can customise your avatar with a handful of different hairstyles, clothing colours and… well if you're playing locally that's about it. You see, the lion's share of customisation items and equipment are exclusively unlocked in the online mode through a rotating series of collections, meaning anyone who doesn't have an internet connection or just wants to play with their friends or family locally is stuck with the fairly meagre default lineup. If you happen to unlock all the available items from each collection at one time, you'll also be prevented from unlocking anything new until the next collection drops seven days after the most recent. Miis have been sidelined we’re sure in part to allow more customisation (although you can still play as your Mii if you wish), but when that customisation is so artificially restricted we can’t help but have a bit of a sour taste left in our mouths.
As far as looks go, it's a generally decent effort. Spocco Square is a good-looking setting with lots of environmental details here and there, but it does feel somewhat generic at the same time. Performance is also largely good, holding a solid 60fps in almost all areas of gameplay save a few peculiar instances of slowdown when bowling with more than one player simultaneously. We also grew to like the new avatars more than we expected which was a pleasant (if minor) surprise.
Conclusion
Nintendo Switch Sports is a charming but barebones offering. It's not a bad game by any stretch but it lacks an awful lot of what would make for a solid recommendation. Online play is the best option on offer with unlockable customisations and a predictably broader pool of players, but its limited scope means you'll be doing the same thing time after time. Local play is hobbled by a lack of any unlockables whatsoever, and with such limited options to change up how each sport plays out, solo play is a slog.
There is fun to be had here, but it's more in the vein of the occasional 30-minute play sessions with friends than anything with major long-term appeal. If Nintendo supports the game in the future with more sports like the promised Golf, and more options to change up how things play, we could be singing a different tune six months from now. As it stands at launch, Nintendo Switch Sports is little more than just 'fine'.

Wii Sports was a great pack-in title for the Wii to showcase what the system was capable of. I played a lot of it back in the day and had a lot of fun.
It's many years later though and it feels a lot less interesting to me now, especially if I need to pay retail price for it. Gave one of the demo sessions a try but got bored and stopped after like ten minutes so I'll be passing on the full game.
Wii Sports always had a “if it ain’t broke” aspect to me. I am looking forward to ruining friendships due to bowling.
This is a prime example of a game that’s a much better idea on paper. This is a game that is 65 dollars over here in Canada if you are buying this physically, and even if you are buying it digitally, it’s 50 dollars. This game has the same amount of sports at launch as Wii Sports, a pack-in game with a Wii, had.
I don’t really see how online will help, and let’s hope it will function properly when they do add it. If Nintendo wants to make this game worth it, there needs to be more added than just golf. This game is looking barer than Wii Sports Resort did. Resort costed, what, 20 dollars? It was worth it. This? No, not even close.
Yeah, I'm still kind of on the fence about this one. I have so many other fantastic multiplayer games for my Switch that this one seems a bit unnecessary. Revisiting Bowling and Chambara would be cool, but is it $40 cool?
Maybe if this game gets updated with some more single-player features I'll check it out. It's mindboggling to me that stuff like Training, Missions, and Fitness Test are no longer available.
from what I've seen I'm just not sold on Switch Sports and I loved Wii Sports back in the 2000s
@CITRONtanker Erm, Wii Sports had five sports and Switch Sports has six at launch, it's not the same number.
And Wii Sports Resort was 50 USD at launch, full priced at the time.
I'm definitely getting this, but not at launch. Maybe when golf gets added.
Well this has me considering cancelling my preorder. Has a 6/7 out of 10 written all over it.
Does what it does well, but there isn't much there in the first place. sigh
This basically confirmed what I thought, a game launching unfinished without the character or modes of the original. I’ll just keep to playing Wii sports resort, which is really a shame given how much I wanted a new Wii sports game in the series
Some days, I really miss the Iwata era of Nintendo.
There’s a game called Strike! Ten Pin Bowling on the eshop I think is just as good as wii sports bowling. There’s even a demo of it to try. I’d spend the money on that rather than this “game” by Nintendo.
the overall consensus - even outside of NintendoLife - seems to be "it's okay."
which means I'll pass. life is too short to spend time looking for silver linings in mediocrity.
About what I expected. No idea why they axed the badge system, or...any other meaningful semblance of content. Only picking it up at some point because my little brother is super excited, he loves Resort
Not going to bother with this. It’ll be interesting to see how many millions this sells.
i can only hope golf isnt the only sports dlc coming. not just for the sake of symmetry on the menu (and unused area that looks like a baseball arena), but just that this isnt cutting it for people
ive gotten over the fact that its not wii sports hd and its doing its own thing, but it still needs to stand on its own to warrant the price
less sports with even less side modes, the game is really banking on online being the reason you keep playing. i hope they dont abandon this game after the golf and soccer updates, what a let down this reboot would be if they did
the fact that this doesn't not only have every game from the original but also resort is astonishing. simply a rushed game : (
Waiting on a certain someone to say about boxing
Pre ordered then cancelled it a day later. I still have Wii sports, Wii sports resorts and Wii sports club which I don’t really play much of. It’s one of those games you play for the first 2 days and never come back to it.
I'm not sure what everyone was expecting here! Wii Sports didn't exactly set a precedent for deep and nuanced gameplay. The game has a budget price here in the UK, and as a result this looks right in line with expectations. Cool!
So torn right now. Feels like I want to cancel pre-order, but can I be arsed before it ships...?
Guess I can always return to store if unwanted, ordered from Currys iirc.
@AlphaElite I have my gripes with this game too (def not buying it), but this idea that Iwata’s era was notably better than current Nintendo is silly. Nintendo has been doing these type of practices for ages, and many gained prominence in Iwata’s time. Heck Amiibo and the practice of releasing bare bone games (Splatoon) with the promise of updates post launch were huge points in the time of the Wii U alone.
@MaxiPareja I wouldn't call £35 budget price.
They really should have done a Wii Sports Resort 2 which could have included all the Wii Sports, WS Resort & even the Wii Fit U Wuhu Island games adapted to the Switch system. That would have been some compilation to own.
@-Green- It’s probably because Nintendo had so much more character then. We had iwata and Reggie and the miis.
I’ll probably get this when it goes on sale after all the updates are done, because I want to show Nintendo that there is still a large market for the Wii sports series but also not for some half hearted attempt
I'll definitely buy this in time, but the current offering doesn't sound worth a day one purchase, unfortunately.
I really was excited for the Switch in 2022, but as the year goes on everything just seems okay instead of fantastic. Perhaps there’s a few too many things we’ve seen before. I liked Pokemon Arceus, and am interested in Kirby when I finally get to play it, but there are a lot of party games that look a bit shallow to me.
Hoping Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Bayonetta 3 brings my interest up a bit.
@OnlyItsMeReid Possibly, although I think it’s people looking back on the past with rose tinted glasses and being older nowadays. Iwata was a good man but people tend to glorify old Nintendo, as if they haven’t done incredibly scummy things back then and treat it as if it’s only recently that they’ve changed lol.
I can't understand that after Wii Sports Resort, the scope of these games seems to have been reigned in quite drastically. Then again this seems to be a worrying trend with Nintendo as Mario Golf and Mario Party have been bery lacklustre compared to previous entries, that and releasing them basically unfinished.
I'll probably wait until golf is added before getting this as it'll still be fun with the family
This seems like it lacks content
Sounds like I for the time being will keep play Wii Sports emulated with my Motion Plus wiimotes. Maybe it will be worth it after som updates and more sports get added!
@gcunit you may not, but you're not the one pricing these games. In comparison to Nintendo's standard pricing of £49.99, or worse yet, £59.99, this is a budget-priced title in their eyes.
I’d buy this game if it was a remake of Sports Resort and they kept the miis ;-;
Seems really strange to lock customization behind an internet connection.
@MaxiPareja It has a budget price in the US and Canada too. Same price the Wii Sports Resort had if I remember correctly.
Well, this sounds much worse than I was expecting... seems like it needed a few more months in the cooker. I don't care about golf but I'll wait until at least then to see if they spruce things up enough to make it worth the cost.
@AlphaElite dont we all
Nice review. This is about what I was expecting, a fun party game but not the huge series progression we all expected. I’m still grabbing it to have some fun motion-controlled games with friends to play (bowling and volleyball should be a blast). That said, there really should be a few more sports here considering Resort had double the amount. Looking forward to motion-controlled golf, though!
Shrugs Sounds like they should have added in the whole Wii Sports Resort roster as this seems a little bare bones.
At least the eShop price is cheaper. ALL titles should be cheaper digitally.
It didn’t really need to change much. I’ve got mine ordered for £30 via Amazon UK. Cant wait. It’s going to sell in silly numbers no matter what.
Not sure what people were expecting from a motion controlled sports game, the demo was cool, and the game is exactly what I wanted, an update of a Wii Sports club, with more sports to be added over time, day one purchase for me, and the game looks great.
I already have Mario Tennis/Golf that both have a ton of extra content for the price, and 51/Clubhouse Games comes with bowling, so the best that Switch Sports has to offer is already available in other forms elsewhere.
Would it be nice to have all of these activities consolidated in a single package? Sure, but Switch Sports isn’t even launching in a complete state which is an absolute joke. In my eyes, post-launch updates are more of a curse (at least for physical releases) as that just means that there’s a wealth of content that isn’t on the cartridge. Sure, we can wireless send updates between systems, which will come in handy once the servers are terminated, but the user shouldn’t have to sacrifice storage space for what should have been on the cartridge that they’ve paid for.
Frankly, I would have preferred a port of Wii Sports Club, maybe with the extra sports thrown in. The fact that Nintendo allocated resources to make a new game from scratch only to launch it as a glorified beta (at full price) is insulting and sets an awful precedent for physical releases going forward. At least Wii Sports Club’s physical release was delayed until AFTER all of the sports were available for purchase.
Release it digitally now if you’re desperate to make coin right away (Nintendo are destitute, after all), but when I buy physical, I want a complete copy of the game; not a full-priced beta, not glorified boot disk, but a complete bloody package. Wii Sports was complete since it launched back in 2006. No downloads or storage space required.
Wii Sports worked because it was packed in with the Wii. Wii Sports Resort was a much more fleshed out game that was fun to mess around with. A port of that would have been much more welcome. That said...
This, stripped back and barebones as it is, still might be fun for a bit. Just never understood why developers step backwards from what worked well.
So is the tennis better or worse than that in Wii Sports? I have Wii Sports and Resort (although I've not played that in over a decade).
I might just revisit them rather than buy this.
Think I will wait until Golf becomes available. The game in general as a whole might get a bit more fleshed out by then with updates similar to Tennis Aces.
Even then I'll see first. Feel like I might as well just boot up Wii Sports on my WiiU.
@Silly_G
This isn't a full-priced game
Looks to me like something that would have been better if it was included with the Switch online expansion pack. This is just so bare bones , and the Switch motion controls will be flakey at best. Sorry , not paying for this one.
This will certainly appeal to folk who like to be a bit more active playing a video game. There is a lot of potential for expanding the game online and keeping fitness folk engaged. Not sure the scope matters to that demographic (more into leg and arm movements rather than fine motor skills of moving your player with your thumb. Kinda pushes it's design too close to game / simulation and further away from just fun excercise, maybe.). I played Wii Sports a fair bit and whereas this isn't a day one for me by any stretch, I'm sure there are loads that can't wait. Good for Nintendo still reaching new people to buy a Switch. Gaming is for everyone (although some interpret that as all games should be...weird.) Anyhoo, sounds like a 6 or a 7 to me (which to be fair is what I thought about Wii Sports. But that's not to say I didn't have a blast playing it.)
I miss bowling enough to just buy it. I’m gonna do physical though. Just in case I hate it, at least I’ll get something for it, if I immediately trade it in
I'm all about it.
At $5.71 per sport (once Golf releases), how could I not be.
I just wanna play Wii Sports Bowling and Golf in HD, anywhere I go. Set up tabletop in my office at work and have at it.
But I'll play the other sports too. Variety is the spice of life.
@Tandy255 but you don't get the leg strap with the digital edition
Does bowling have 100 pin mode? And is joycon drift a gamebreaker or not too important?
on the fence.....
I´ll never pay U$39,90 for it.
If it had 15 sports and U$19,90 yes.
@Westlondonmist True, but you may have the Ring Fit leg strap.
My bigger point is that digital games can’t be loaned, traded, nor sold. Digital titles should always be a little cheaper.
Yeah I’m not getting this, no handheld mode, one mode is locked behind a physical item, and there is a limited amount of content. I could see this being a lot of fun if you play with friends a lot but thus isn’t for me.
Gotta have a laugh at the "not sure what people were expecting" type of comments when there are literally dozens of comments explaining exactly why some are disappointed. These apologists are part of the reason we've been getting a lot of these rushed games lately.
The lack of training modes is a shame. Wii Sports actually had a lot of depth and replayability to it if you used the 'fitness age' of the training and played them daily as an exercise routine. The punchbag mode for boxing was especially tiring.
Resort got past this with the sheer volume of content.
About what I expected to be honest. It was always going to be in the camp of 'good but also eh'. The originals were carried by the character to help alleviate this aspect but this one doesn't really have the same luxury, what with the candyflossed Mii's we have now.
Also, customisation being tied to online? Ew.
@AndyC_MK111 You'd hope there'd be some form of roadmap, but I don't think Nintendo has any set structure on how they proceed with free DLC or not.
Just look at Super Mario Party for example! Sold incredibly well (I think the 7th best selling Switch game) and people called out for additional boards as free DLC... sadly never came to be. Instead we got a MP: Superstars a few years after.
Whereas Mario Tennis Aces and Golf: Super Rush are way, way lower in sales, yet got a consistent set up of updates.
Could be that developer Camelot had time to do that with the sports titles, but NDcube just wanted to move onto the next thing.
Just got to wait n see with Switch Sports!
Okay, maybe this didn't work, but WAIT til we get Switch Music!
This is another situation where the product is now worth what people will pay for it. This game will sell gangbusters because of course it does, and all of us people with legitimate complaints will be ignored. I’ll probably buy this game too, because good casual experiences are rare in the landscape. However, this really pales in comparison to other entries in the series, and I’m sad that this is my intro to it.
I don't understand all the negativity in the comments hahahaha. This game will sell like hot cakes. And the sports are fun to play, and with multiplayer (couch and online), this will give the game endless life.
Probably gonna pick this up. Looking at reviews it's pretty much the same complaints people had regarding the original, and it'll probably score similar. That only got like 75 on metacritic.
It's Wii Sports, but with online play. Exactly what it looked like from every video they've shown. Don't know what people were expecting.
@johnvboy The way you can manage to turn literally every single failure on Nintendo’s part to actually be the fault of the consumer for expecting too much is downright impressive. I’ve never seen you even modestly critical—even so much as indifferent of—anything Nintendo has ever done in the many comments I’ve seen you post on this site. Madness…
They've dropped the best Wii Sport, which was Frisbee Dog. I'll just stick to playing on my Wii U.
Mostly for nostalgia play with my daughters, I’ve decided to keep my pre-order.
I have the Ring-Fit leg strap, but still chose physical so that I can loan the game to my niece and nephew.
So like the first Wii sports game this has no depth as a single player game. I played Wii sports for about a week and never went back to it as no matter how enjoyable golf was there was nothing substantial for me to play it. I always thought this version would be no different.
@ClamDown,
Not sure why this should bother you so much, and I am not blaming the consumers at all, if they expect a revision of an old motion control game to be ground breaking, then I am not sure what to suggest.
This is a way to bring the classic motion control Wii and Wii U games to a new audience, and of course they will not feel as fresh and new as they did years ago, all I was hoping was they played similar, were fun as before and looked more modern, so as far as I am concerned this ticks all of those boxes.
@ClamDown, I am with @johnvboy. Some may not see the game worth the value, others will. That is fine. People can opt not to buy it.
I bought Switch 1-2 and only found a few of the games interesting. After a while, I sold it. Not a problem, unless people bought it digitally. Best to wait for reviews and then decide for yourself.
My guess is that it will sell well enough, but the moderate review scores will have many people waiting.
@Tandy255,
The way some are going on you would think Nintendo had messed up Breath of the wild 2.
But this is no less or more than I was expecting, perhaps peoples expectations for this were way too high, my only wish was for a 3D hub world to explore, as those environments look very cool.
@johnvboy But in the past this game was free, and the Resort version, with MUCH more activities, cost $19.90.
This game is not worth it at this price. At this price it's worth buying Just Dance which uses the motion control much better and is much more successful at parties.
Should have made Sports Resort 2 instead. Needs a lot more content to be worth $40 to me.
The review does seem to be a little disappointing. I’m still getting this though. I have fond memories of bowling, and Tennis 🎾. I remember playing the tennis online for the WiiU. It was kind of archaic but way fun. There are a whole bunch of cheaters that never prospered also, but hey that’s life.
@Rykdrew You make good points. Without nostalgia, this game probably would sell a lot less copies.
I was traveling and missed the online play demo. So beyond the reviews, I am going into this blind. Worse case is I sell the game down the road. People that are hesitant can wait for a sale or a used copy.
However well this sells (or doesn’t sell), I hope Nintendo does learn some lessons.
Maybe after Golf, some DLC for the NSO Expansion Pack???
The review mentions the lack of better tutorials. I miss having games with a good instruction manual.
@Rykdrew,
Value is always doing to be subjective, I have no issue with the price and there will be more sports added over time, yes Wii sports was free, but that does nor mean everything after has to be free as well, or would you suggest it's worth say $20.
@AndyC_MK111 I guess it’s because of the online feature Is not up and running. I’m getting this day one. I have the ring fit So I guess I don’t even need the extra accessory. I wouldn’t mind one. Are there local two player co-op’s in this? I mean I read the review and it said some of the games didn’t have that.
Oh no it plays like Wii Sports and Wii Sports Club, and I'm incredibly disappointed that it doesn't have 50 games included. This should be a pack in, don't they know how poor I am right now?
After reading and watching some more reviews, I decided to pass on the game for now. I’m sure it’ll be fun but I got a lot of other titles to play at the moment, both alone and when together with friends. Once it gets cheaper and we get more info on golf I’ll be a bit more enticed. I’m also temporarily back living with my parents while I’m house hunting so… I doubt I’ll be inviting any friends over to my parents’ place anytime soon 😅
Just here for the ads and comments, lol
@Rykdrew,
I am a little conflicted over the price, personally I do not have an issue but I can see how some could have concerns, perhaps Nintendo should have gone down the Wii Sports Club route, and charge for sports on an individual basis, that way you only pay for what you want etc.
Really hope Nintendolife don’t go and slap the customary 8/10 on this pile of ****
@LEGEND_MARIOID that would have been cool. On the plus side, at least we still have GO VACATION on Switch.
@NinChocolate The winner for most relatable comment goes to...
I feel like I should get it, but I just don’t want it.
@Tandy255 The eshop price is only cheaper because the physical version is sold with the legstrap.
@BTB20 Yeah, I am praising them for selling it cheaper, but I know it isn’t for the reasons that I want. Since digital games can’t be loaned, traded or sold — the digital versions should always be a little cheaper.
I’ve beat this drum too many times, but the Link’s Awakening remake is a perfect example of where the digital copy should not have launched at $60 (let alone still be at that price).
I’m not interested in buying this at all.I absolutely loved the wii sports games,especially wii sports resort,but this game just seems totally dull.Big missed opportunity in my opinion.
This is an easy skip for me. How much mileage could you really expect out of this? Playing Wii sports with friends all night worked because we were younger, and it was a whole new bizarre experience propelled by the extreme popularity of the Wii. It will never be the same
What exactly does, “score pending” entail, NL?
Where was the demand for this?
Was very interested in this for Bowling and Tennis to play locally with my wife and kids but reading that customizations are locked behind online play I think I'll wait for a while before I get this. I always felt customizations in these Wii Sports like games would be cool but of course they mess it up for those of us who have no desire to play online.
Maybe someday....
It sounds like a 5/10. Perhaps add 1 or 2 points if you frequently have quests to play with. The couple of decent sports would get boring fast, and the rest would be in very short bursts.
Wii u sports club had great side modes for tennis, bowling and golf. They were probably my favourite part of the whole game. Still nothing beats resort. I hope they revist the resort idea again.
I'm actually really looking forward to this. Even to this day my wife and I still occasionally fire up Wii Sports for a game of bowling and tennis. My daughter who is now 8 also loves getting involved (she loves real life 10 pin bowling)
Ive got it preordered mainly so I can finally but my Wii U into retirement and make some space under the TV (and save a HDMI port)
Now unlockable outfits are paywalled behind NSO?
Yeah, screw that. Not a hard pass yet, but I think this cements my willingness to hold out for a sale and/or a reprint with everything on the cart.
@johnvboy This game hasn't gone down well in the comment sections. You know what this means....😏
@WiltonRoots,
Nothing more certain to indicate a massive sales success when the usual suspects say a game is rubbish, of course they then usually fall back on the old, sales do not equal quality or contentment, and celebrating mediocrity.
Got the bingo card already primed.
@Crockin,
Not so sure some on here have grown tired of excessive wrist movements while sat in front of the T.V, but I could be wrong.
Tennis in particular can take it out of you.
@AndyC_MK111 Who doesn't have online connectivity these days? Besides, this is meant to be played on Docked mode, not on the go, so, all things fall in their place whe you realize that.
Wii Sports was a product of its time. It was a pack in title, motion controls were brand new, and it was a way to ease players into what they can expect from the Wii. It just doesn't do that for the Switch. Motion controls are old, the Wii's hardware limitations also allowed for Wii Sports to be so limiting, but there's no excuse on the Switch. The charm just doesn't work here. This will be a great budget title. I'd pay maybe $30 for it.
I wouldn't spend more than 30 mins with wii sports, not into motion controls, or multiplayer games, really. That came with the console, though. This is a full retail release, i think (?), so there's no way I'd ever buy this. To each his own. A part of me wants others to have fun & I'm glad they're making something people like, but the other side of me wants it to do poorly so they'll quit wasting resources on this junk & invest in more games that i like. 😝
@johnvboy Sorry for the late response. Besides you completing dodging everything what I was saying, I don’t think it’s fair to give Nintendo a pass on this one. Wii Sports Resort was soooo good and had so much content and this is a dramatic step down in terms of content (unless online modes are hiding something major, which to be fair I haven’t ruled out). I’m still buying this for bowling and badminton but really I wish Nintendo really put more into this. The original Wii Sports was so mind blowing and still so fun to return to even today, but the fact 16 years later we can’t choose EXTREMELY BASIC options like the ability play tennis single matches really does disappoint me. I know you made a joke about us acting like this is BOTW2 but the truth is a game shouldn’t need to be BOTW2 for Nintendo to put a (realistically) large amount of passion and effort into a game. I love Wii Sports, and no, I will never love it as much as Zelda, but still…I just feel like this isn’t even the bare minimum. : (
Bought it off the eshop for £30, been playing it for 3 hours now and I'm having tons of fun playing with random people from around the world. Sure, Wii Sports Resort had a lot more content and I can understand why some people will be upset that Switch Sports doesn't offer the same number of things to do. But honestly so far I think its worth the money, but everyone has different opinions on things.
Yes, I haven't bought it yet and I know it just can't compare to it's classic Wii counterparts but will that stop me from having fun with it? I truly don't think so.
I'll be honest, when this was announced, I didn't understand why people were interested. The review doesn't surprise me that much. However, I expect this to sell like crazy, if for no other reason that the target demographic is quite broad. Anyone who played Wii Sports years ago who never played games otherwise will probably find this quite appealing.
Am loving it. 6 seems harsh. 7 is fair IMO
@ClamDown,
No problems, and if you do not think this is value personally then fair enough, for me it does exactly what I wanted, but is missing the Golf for the moment, not going to fall out with you over it.
We also have to consider that for a lot of Switch owners this will be a totally new game.
Everything about the marketing and presentation of this title suggests to me that Nintendo want to recapture the audience that purchased the Wii. If this is so, I think it's a missed opportunity not to have launched with a new home only Switch console, with the game packed in. This might sell to the existing fanbase, but I'd be surprised if it will sell more consoles as things are.
This review is 100% what I expected. Just a slightly enhanced and updated version of Wii Sports.
Now, this game may not be the deepest at the moment, but I'm buying it to recapture some childhood memories with my mom. And for that, I really appreciate this game
@jarvismp same. 7/10
Nintendo Minimum Effort Seal
The new motto that Nintendo will be known for.
I’m absolutely loving the game - it is a shame that the extra content is locked behind online but most games these days get you to pay extra for dlc so it is sort of the same thing in my eyes. But other than that, I am loving it. I still prefer the Miis though so I am glad they kept them.
It gets a 10/10 from me!
1. Joy-Cons are so much Smoother than the wiimotes.
2. Online Play is Fantastic and adds to the Fun!
3. The Miis look so much better
4. The Sports play better and the controls actually respond on time, unlike the wiimotes.
5. Unlocking things adds high replay value
@NintendoEternity I couldn’t agree more but will try!
Was just saying mid-week how I wasn't interested in this and yet this morning, plop, there it is on the mat in my hallway (the game that is, I didn't excrete). The au pair was watching Criminal Minds on the telly so I only managed to have a quick go on tennis in tabletop mode, but I was awful. I used to be a champion on Wii Tennis (I once won a million quid in a drunken 'double or nothing' session with a friend), but this just didn't feel right to me.
Will give it another go later and see if I get into it.
I disagree sharply.
Yes it's barebones, BUT, it's also only $39.99 and with Golf, offers 40% more sports than the original Wii release.
It's exactly what I wanted. So I couldn't care less if NintendoLife gave it a 2/10. Opinions are just opinions.
And my opinion is, this game is an 8/10, and if speaking in terms of fun factor, a 9/10, and such a classic it's an essential must-own for any Switch gamer.
I set up tabletop this morning in my office at work and got my reports to play bowling with me. That's priceless 😀
@AlexOlney
Will this main review be updated after the Gold update?
@johnvboy For a lot of Switch owners it is a new game? Wii Sports is the 4th best selling game of all time with almost 83 million sold. I really wonder for what amount of a lot this will ever be new
Nah, it's not a 6 game, not at all, not going by the typical scoring of games on here.
It's interesting because it's clear that the intention was to make a point of this game even from the preview, the tone of the reporting on it even then seemed to pick holes in things that weren't really issues. Like the two players in tennis for instance, I'm still not sure why that's an issue.
Either way, I'm enjoying it for what it is, which is a wii sports follow up, it doesn't need to be any more complex than that. Is it a 10? Of course not, but I'd say its at least a 7 perhaps an 8.
@MajorTom I hope this outsells the wiisports game, but that might be tough since wiisports was out longer... but we'll never know.
Baseball and Golf are definitely missed. At this time this is a Bowling game for me and that's fine for $40. Cant wait for the update with more sports.
couldn't resist popping to argos to get this at lunch. only played bowling so far. gutted there is no 100 pin mode as that is what my friends and i played to death, but the new mode with the obstacles is a worthy replacement.
sadly, it just doesn't feel like you're as involved in throwing the ball, it feels a little simplified, dumbed down even (which was my complaint against the new mario golf game VS golf on the N64)... but it'll still cause the same fights and showing off after the pub that it always did
the problem i facing was Online Error .. i like the soccer game but they really need updated fix this unble join room issue
You can not even give your self a guotie or mustache in the new Mii maker and if you do not have the online, you can not earn anything to improve it. This is extremely bare bones. There is basically no single player mode at all.
@NintendoEternity We'll never know? Nah, I think we know very well. Wii Sports sold 83 million copies because it was a pack-in with the console everywhere but Japan. Over 80% of Wii owners had the game. The best selling Switch game, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, about 42% of Switch owners have. Next down the list of best selling Wii games was Mario Kart Wii. About 37% of Wii owners had it. Next on the Wii's list is Wii Sports Resort, which a bit under 33% of Wii owners had. Maybe this game ends up being that successful. For it to pass Wii Sports in raw sales numbers, given a very generous 33% install rate, the Switch would need to sell 254.5 million total units, or about 100 million more than the most successful consoles of all time, the PS2 and DS, ever sold.
tl;dr lmao not a chance bud
As there is such a strong online focus with this it should have been included in the base tier of NSO, with retail units being little more than a code for 12 months NSO subscription plus the legstrap.
This would have had the benefit of driving new NSO subscriptions while allowing this who purchased digitally to buy at retail for the 'pack in' item boosting the physical sales.
With existing NSO subscribers just stacking the code onto current sub.
You know that not all games should be 100 hours and have deep idiotic pretentiou storylines right like a boring indie game? Sometimes games are just fun and short. And there's nothing wrong with that.
All the "bad" things you mentioned are precisely the kind of things that make these games worth buying. That's the point of wii sports: pick up and play.
I don't get what you were expecting for a 10 grade? RPG elements? walls and walls and walls and walls and walls of text? Failed art school shenanigans?
Bring on the good, fun, fast games. We need more than ever.
Yeah I suspected the game was gonna be pretty barebones.
I'll stick with Sunbreak and Xenoblade 3 when they release.
I would rate the game 5/10. There is almost no single player and three of the sports are extremely similar. Sword fighting is extremely bare bones with no modes, rewards or progression. If you don't have someone to play it with, there is nothing to do.
The style of this game reminds me of the many Wii Sports clone games that released back in the Wii era. If this game did not have a Nintendo label on it, I expect most people will not have bat an eye to it. It actually made me remember that remastered Wii game for Switch called Go Vacation.
@Dimey had a mate round this eve... bowling still works. badminton a LOT of fun
Incredibly disappointing, they had SO much to build from the Wii Sport Resort game and they go backwards, Locking costumes behind NSO, less sports, 3 sports that play almost identical, the 3 sports that are almost identical feel WORSE than the 2006 base game, no freedom to move your racket about, just swing and hit, no training modes, no extra modes... why on earth do we need to wait til fall for GOLF a staple of both games, and its not like its very exciting waiting for golf when the latest first party sports game that dropped, was (which was another LACKLUSTER game) Mario Golf Super Rush... Rumours of basketball and dodge-ball, but given how little support Mario Party Superstars and Super Mario Party got...i don't expect an iota of effort from big N.
Lastly, its been nearly 20 years, why on earth don't we have the freedom to walk around the court in tennis and all the other sports - what a pathetic attempt of a game and shameful of Nintendo to try and ride off the popularity of a once great iconic series...and that's not even to mention the lack of focus on Miis
Honestly, don't waste your hard earned cash on this product, Nintendo don't deserve to profit from this
Very nicely done. Easy to pick up and just play. Lacked more choices in character creation, but that was probably the only down fall that I came across. My daughter and I played 2 rounds of bowling, 4 rounds of Chambara and 1 round of Badminton all of which were fun and got our pulses going a bit. I would say the 50 that I put down for this was worth it.
I honestly think Nintendo would've been better off releasing an HD remake of Wii Sports and Resort combined. Even though that'd be lazy from Nintendo at least there'd be a bit more variety. I had the feeling the game was going to turn out this way after playing the demo - I was pretty disappointed how tennis didn't feel any different than Wii Sports.
After playing most of the sports now, with my daughters and them online together, Switch Sports seems like a blast. The games are still fun, especially online (we all love the Survival Bowling a lot). However...for some reason, to me at least, the games feel...less responsive to the motion controls of the Joycons than they did on the Wii-mote. I don't know if anyone else feels like this or not (I need to now go back and read through the comments). For instance, in Tennis, the control over the racket feels less than what it did in the original Wii Sports. Is anyone else having this kind of reaction to the controls? The games are still a ton of fun to play with others locally or online, but something just feels...less responsive?
I think the score is a little low. It may be a mediocre game with any other standard but its an important game for the Switch ecosystem that take advantage of its special capabilities.
Also unlockable cosmetics aren't attainable without an internet connection? welcome to second half of 2022
Me and the fam picked this up and played it all night tonight. Many fights over bowling and tennis - just like the good ol' days - the simplicity is it's charm!!
Finally, I can talk about this game. Did they fix the controls for bowling? I was very upset with the beta and I'm wondering if the controls in bowling play like they did in the last three games.
Why is there no mention that the progression to Pro level has been removed? The game is fun, but too many glaring omissions.
@I-U I am at pro level now in bowling so it is still there!
@Highlar I am having trouble with the controls too. Very tough for me get consistent good throws in bowling, and my racket didn't swing a few times for me it n tennis.
Launching unfinished killed it for me. If it’s confirmed to get an updated version with everything on cart later then I will consider it. Until then forget it.
Wow, considering how high some games scores on here, a 6/10 is kinda alarming for me. Guess I’ll check some other reviews too but this looks like a skip for me.
I have experienced both Wii Sports and Switch Sports, and most people on this site have experienced both in some way or another, however, Nintendo keeps new gamers and casual gamers in mind, those who haven't experienced Wii sports or even motion control in this simple yet satisfying way.
Some games are more intuitive than others with no need for tutorials such as Bowling, Tennis and Badminton, so those were easier to experience, while Soccor, Chambara, and Volleyball needed more patience to get over their tutorials, and those were OK with experienced gamers.
The reaction I got from the 15+ people who tried it willingly and also from those who were reluctant to try it was that it is a great experience and that all asked where can we get this? Most of them were not aware of the Switch as a console, and they left with big smiles and multiple times thanking me for letting them experience this, and how much they had fun.
The people who tried it were from little kids to above 40 years old. One father was telling his excited kid who owns a PS4 we can get you this for your next birthday.
This game will attract new people with no previous experience in gaming or Nintendo. I expect Nintendo will support it further down the line once it generates some data.
I personally vehemently disagree with the review’s verdict. I am truly in love with this game!
Perhaps not as much if I didn’t have access to the online functionality. But as long as you keep that in mind when purchasing the game, there is a lot of good fun to be had here.
@CITRONtanker
To compare this to the free pack in is fair on the surface. However there are weekly items to unlock from playing, and online opens this up to honest competition instead of being trapped only playing it with you kid sister or Grandma
Should be arriving today! Looking forward to it!
One thing that does slightly annoy me about these sorts of reviews is that you are almost reviewing this in comparison to a game it isn't meant to be. It is meant to be a simple sports game. Why does it need more scope to the sports?
You clearly want a game that is more complex, but this Sports series will never be that. I wish you would review the game that we have rather than wishing it was another game.
@DK-Fan Very Serious Gamers are giving their opinion here. They can’t grasp the simplicity of “mum/sis/bro/dad etc who’ve never touched a console in their life, being offered a bowling session in their front room.” Their opinion is after Elden Ring how can you offer this? Truth is nobody in the real world cares…It’s like getting life advice from someone who works in Games Workshop.
@Highlar 100% They've removed the ability to just swing about your remote, the game has literally boiled down to a swinging motion and timing, its literally quick time events hidden behind a motion instead of a button - its awful 0 zero substance, barely a game at this point
@lighteningbolt79 I mean, can we even call this game a game, they've removed the charm, modes and other stuff from its previous games and now most games are quick time events hidden behind a swing instead of a button - there was more freedom in a tech demo from 2006 fgs
@WiltonRoots You'd think with a game so simple they'd at least put the effort in to add more modes/games, even still it has less control and functionality from a game from 2006, and that was pretty bare bones - they're assuming the general consumers are dumber than those of 2006 - its a bad trend and a bit of a joke to think people will just stand around swinging at quick time events for fun
@Battoot and then everybody clapped
@presenttense Is it still set to 1000 points to reach Pro level? I’ve got Bowling’s Pro League unlocked, but nothing yet involving pro level progression.
@Bret I wouldn't say, "not a chance". All Nintendo needs to do is play the Apple card and Support the Nintendo Switch Family (Like Apple does with IPhone) for another 10 years and release the Nintendo Switch Advance! It's not hard to do; in fact, it would be very Smart of Nintendo to do just that! We're living in different times now. Just Bundle Nintendo Switch Sports with the Older Models and BAM! Watch the Sales Grow!
Honestly I'd buy this just for the bowling. Wii Bowling was always a uniquely fun and accessible experience, seems essential to me these days.
I personally have quite enjoyed what I have played so far of the games. I do have a few issues that I am having a hard time getting passed though. For one, the simplicity of the sports as well as the disappointingly low amount of customization options for the sports in general. I know the online portion of the game needs to mostly remain static to keep some legitimacy, but I wish there were options like increasing the time limit of some games, or raising the score you need to reach in order to get a win. Or having a day/night course selection. How about a low gravity soccer mode? That would be so much fun.
I also am disappointed with the incredibly low amount of standard customization options for the characters themselves. And I am specifically talking about the basic clothes you can choose from for your avatar before you start unlocking things online. I don't think I have seen such a small beginning selection in a game in quite some time. I did enjoy unlocking all of the first two sets, but the basic options are so limited that I feel like I don't have enough control over how my character should look.
Currently, those are my two biggest issues besides the obvious limited amount of sports available. I am still finding details to love about the game, and love the unpredictability of motion controlled games in general, but the fine tuning I would expect from Nintendo isn't here like I was used to in the Wii Sports Resort days. Those charming little Nintendo details that just made me smile. I do enjoy the game though, and have had a blast playing all the games. The game just feels a little barren currently, and golf is a long way off. I really hope they have more than gold up their sleeve in order to keep the interest for the more passionate motion controlled gaming fans. My response is kind of long winded, but I do enjoy the game. It was worth my money. A little more content would have gone a long way though. Basketball shoot out/matches, boxing, and archery would have been great to include in addition to golf. That would have made a much more robust package.
@Gumbo1995 Time will tell...be interesting to see how this unfolds. What I have learned though is the opinions in here rarely reflect the real world.
Having played this for a few days I think a 6 is a bit too low. I’d personally give it an 8. Soccer is a blast and bowling is great as well. Golf will probably be another great sport once it comes. The other sports are alright but for a game I see myself coming back to very often a 6 sounds like a game I’d maybe rent.
@Gumbo1995
We get your hatred for the game but do you need to make 5 posts about it? You say three sports play identically but in no way is volleyball similar to tennis
I've had a lot of fun playing it so far. As the review says, Bowling is as good as it's ever been and that's what I've played the most but I also really enjoy Soccer, Badminton and Volleyball. each great additions. I do wish Basketball was there and it's a shame we have to wait for Golf but what's there is good and the game could evolve through more updates. I'd pay for a good size expansion that adds at least 5 sports and a new location.
Overall it's really good. Not as good as Wii Sports Resort but better than the original and still a great party game all these years later. Don't usually play games online a lot because of how toxic it can get but this game is very chill and the community is friendly, another aspect I like a lot.
i played this for the first time last night.
like others, i am very surprised that this game doesn't have every sport from both previous titles, plus a few new ones. they had to know that was an easy expectation, and what they delivered is nowhere close. this game is about as shallow as one could possibly imagine.
not good.
This game had the potential to be something pretty special. Imagine if we at least had everything the Wii version had such as the modes like 100 pin bowling, lots of customisation content just by playing the game, online being a mode for people to simply compete and rank up in for those that want it.
Instead what we got was a disappointing attempt by Nintendo to justify their stupid online subscription service. When Nintendo are at their creative best its really quite something. But when Nintendo become set on trying to shoehorn a feature down peoples throats they become relentless and its the players that lose out. Like with the loss of Virtual Console, Switch Sports has become a casualty, almost like a glorified ad for online.
There is no reason they couldnt have really enhanced the entire experience, but offline and solo play is basically barebones, almost seemingly intentionally so JUST so that players would be more inclined to want to seek online. That's lame. The game basically feels incomplete and IMO kind of steers you into online. In some ways it reminds of that 3DS badge arcade where the Rabbit also basically guilts you and displays in some regions for not paying to play more - again something Nintendo are perfectly fine with implementing.
People shouldn't react like "oh, 6/10, so disappointing." Look at the scores the original game got. They were similar. And just like that, a lot of people are having a great time with this game, despite the mixed critical reception.
I loved Wii Sports when it came out, but I tired of motion controls very, very quickly. What was once a unique and interesting concept in 2008 now looks archaic and outdated in 2022. I'll find other things to do with friends when they come over.
@AG_Awesome I tried that game. It's no good. If all you want is bowling, then Club House Games. The bowling in that is suppose to be very similar to Switch Sports and you get a lot more other games. (Also, in hindsight, people were wondering why Club House Games was only two players. Now we know why—Switch Sports was in the works.)
@thinkhector I enjoyed it. What didn’t you like about it out of curiosity? I do have clubhouse but still haven’t played it yet. Lol. Too big of a backlog
At the very least, I think this isn't the worst we've seen the series hit. Wii Sports Club was bad enough to the point where Wikipedia called it an enhanced remake rather than a sequel to Resort.
its very sad to say this but.... we have to wait for the dlcs....in overall the game is a solid 7/10 with a very solid (for nintendo's servers)online gameplay and a lot of rewards that they will make u play the game even more than u wanted to
4/10..............This is a joke for its price. Wii Sports was good as a pack in, and immediately illustrated the lack of depth the Wii was as a Video Game System.
ppl keep saying mii avatar is Great bla bla bla , since i have 30 hours online most i saw there character design was the anime face. less user using Mii
This game is absolute fantastic Sport + music ( Football , bowling and Tennis my Favorite )
Picked this game up today and it was good fun for a bit, I found the controls to be a bit clunky, but it got stale after I played all the sports, can’t say it was worth the $56 Australian dollars I paid for it, but it seems like a nice game to play for half an hour when I’m bored
@WiltonRoots They're releasing the last costume set, couldn't even kept it running more than a year - after owning the game my non-gaming friends want to play Wii Sport over switch sports, what a flop!
@Hero-of-WiiU A year later and i'm still pissed lmao - not even my non-gaming friends want to play it - it could have been something so so so much better - Nintendo need to do better, they've even stopped online support less than a year in with the last costume set releasing this month
