Considering how much the Fallout franchise has evolved over the years, the original game is still a darn good time and well worth checking out. You can play it on Steam now for under a tenner, if you like, but one fan has gone a step further and ported the game over to the 3DS.
As spotted by TheGamer, the mod was created by MrHuu with details posted on GBATemp. You'll need to own a legal copy of the original game to migrate the relevant files over to the 3DS (which, of course, needs to be modded), but overall, it sounds like a relatively painless way to play the game on something that isn't the Steam Deck.
You can use the 3DS stylus in place of a mouse to interact with the game, though it's also noted that you'll need to press the 'L' button to cycle between left and right clicks. Sounds a tad fiddly, but we imagine it wouldn't take too long to get used to.
Otherwise, yeah, this is Fallout, on the 3DS. Neat! The only official Fallout release on the Switch, meanwhile, is Fallout Shelter which, don't get us wrong, is perfectly fun in its own right, but it would be splendid to get a port of Fallout 3. Actually, we spoke about that at length recently - go give it a read.
What do you make of this Fallout port on the 3DS? Let us know your thoughts with a comment down below.

Pretty cool that they were able to make such a port!
Would love to see a remaster of the Fallout 1 & 2 on modern consoles. Make it control well on a controller and add some quality of life fixes, and it would be more than enough already.
This is an awesome achievement!
The game actually refused to work on my Deck, so all the more reason to keep this port in mind.😄
That’s cool. The original Fallout is still one of my favorite games and close to how I envision an “ideal RPG” to be. (An ideal RPG is of course a stupid concept as this genre has so many different types of games to offer. My favorite RPG of all time for example, Might and Magic 6, has a completely different focus than this game.)
But having a really well fleshed out world and setting as is the case here, and then having a character system and game mechanics that allows you to solve all or most quests in a number of different ways is a really great way to make an RPG. And close to the spirit of the original pen and paper games.
Fallout especially deserves credit for all the non-violent ways you can solve a task and for the bleak post-apocalyptic setting, where in a number of cases where there are no good choices, but only bad ones and you have to chose the one that your character most likely would have picked.
This is a wonderful game that really stand the test of time.
Pretty sure I got this free on epic games store in their countless giveaways and I have been wanting to get into this series so maybe I’ll try this out
I tried it yesterday and I gotta say, it's faaaar from perfect (as expected)
It's in its very early stages and the 3DS although a nice fit for it, lacks the resolution for you to play it perfectly. (played on the original 3DS btw)
I do wish they decided to port this to the Wii U instead
Played and beat the original Fallout just last month - loved it. There’s some pretty grim pixel hunting in a dark vault early on that I can’t imagine would be fun on the 3DS, but otherwise it’s still an outstanding RPG. Great world building, setting and levelling up mechanics. Heartily recommend it, even now.
Ahh this sounds COOL. I have Fallout from Epic Games Store but wouldn’t have the first clue of how to proceed from there… I might have to study up
Would love to get Fallout on the Switch or Switch 2. It's the only games I really miss on Nintendo platforms.
I hope he is also porting fallout 2 since it's the more refined experience
@nhSnork It's good to see the 3DS continues to best more expensive and powerful tech to this day. PC Master Race pulls up short once again.
Too bad Bethesda and Todd Howard didn't try to make this happen during the 3DS's popularity.
Saw this on Reddit the other day, frickin awesome and crazy.
That said, Microsoft, Nintendo and Bethesda need to get to it and port the Fallout series to Switch! So far it’s been multiplatform, so no excuse there, and it would sell stupidly well…. Willing to bet there’s over a million copies of Skyrim sold on Switch…. Fallout would equal or exceed that easily, especially given the show boosting popularity atm.
Come on Spencer, Howard, and Bowser, don’t you guys wanna print some money?
This is neat. I really wish we'd get Fallout 1/2 ported to modern hardware in a Beamdog style Enhanced Edition. It just seems like Bethesda is unwilling to touch Black Isle's work, which I get, but it really keeps the franchise separated in a weird way.
Pretty insane. I would like to see some long-form play of this. I am skeptical.
