Valve's Portal: Companion Collection will see the release of Portal and Portal 2 on a Nintendo system for the first time ever, but have you ever wondered what the original 2007 game might have looked like if it got a release during the N64 era?
Well, there's now a 'Portal 64' demake in the works. It's still in development, but in the video below you can see project contributor 'lambertjamesd' showcasing the portal gun and portals. What's even more impressive is that it's apparently running on real hardware and can go up to six portals deep.
"Portal running on real N64 hardware. In this update I got the portal gun working with recursive portal rendering. I also made some huge strides behind the scene on the game engine."
The same creator 'lambertjamesd' has previously released other Nintendo inspired creations such as Game Boy emulator that supposedly runs on real hardware and 'N64 realtime shadows'.
What do you think of this early look at the Portal 64 demake? Leave a comment down below.

Take note: this is a real N64 project, unlike the 'Metroid 64' one. https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/04/fans-have-created-their-own-metroid-64-and-it-looks-incredible
Love me some portal. Will definitely emulate it on my phone if it gets finished and released in the future.
Portal on ds, switch, and n64!! Whats next?
@AndyC_MK111 merely stating a fact, no negativity intended.
Quite impressive! In a given part of Portal, a character (that like everything else is AI) starts to run in a potato. That potato may be faster than an actual N64 hardware.
Can't wait for Portal Collection on Switch.
I've been desperately wanting those games on handheld ever since Vita.
@abdias No way man, the N64 was/is a beast! I always knew it had the chops to run something like this!
When they display the N64 logo before the title screen, presumably it will be... a Companion N-Cube? (silence)
@AndyC_MK111 Since nukatha didn't clarify and you at least initially were unaware of this, the Metroid 64 demo reported on recently by NintendoLife is running in Unity 3D on a PC. No Nintendo 64 code at all, it's just being made to look like it could've existed on the system.
This Portal demake is being coded for the N64.
Wooow that is damn impressive
This reminded me of the Mario 64 Portal mod: https://youtube.com/watch?v=aGvDuJ33ieM
@JaxonH I'm hoping for a physical release
Hooray. Congratulations wasting your life on making technology worse. I'm sure your future self will remember fondly all this time you wasted. For science....
@NEStalgia
It is impressive to see what passion projects can bring to outdated hardware.
One of the largest limiting factors of a game is time constraints. The game has a release that it needs to meet. This was especially true in the 5th generation of consoles, since development studios were expected to get a game out with only 8 to 14 months of development in most cases.
The passion projects of today don’t have that limitation. They can take the time to really wring out the hardware and see what it can really do without any sort of oversight and free experimentation.
@OrtadragoonX .... It was a game reference..... 😔
This is awesome!
@NEStalgia it took me a minute, but I got it, beautiful reference lol
