Luigi's Mansion 2 returns later this month on the Nintendo Switch in HD, and we've now had the chance to go "hands on" with it.
If you haven't already seen our feature here on Nintendo Life, we mentioned how we couldn't wait to continue our playthrough. It's still stuffed "full of charm and atmosphere" and now comes with all sorts of upgrades like new character models, animations, improved controls, gyro aiming and more.
Right, so what are other outlets first impressions of this game so far? Siliconera called it "scarily good":
"Overall, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD seems like its going to hold up really well on the Nintendo Switch...the graphics are beautiful, and the gameplay is still as charming as ever. Whether this continues deeper into the game, we’ll have to wait and see."
Comicbook.com mentioned how it seemed like a faithful remaster, but also thought it carried over some issues:
"some of the game's issues have also been carried over. The biggest of these is the way that saves are handled. The game has a mission-based approach that was designed specifically with portable play in mind. Unfortunately, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD only saves after you complete each mission, and there's no ability to manually save the game."
My Nintendo News thinks the improved graphics should make it worth the double-dip:
"Although it’s not quite as graphically impressive as Luigi’s Mansion 3, the visual differences between the 3DS and Switch versions will make it worth the double-dip for many, even with the increase in price over the original. While there doesn’t seem to be anything new in terms of content, the remaster will definitely be an extra special treat for those who never owned a 3DS and haven’t played the critically-acclaimed game before."
If you're wondering how it plays "without 3D", here's how Vooks.net summed up the experience:
"Like many Nintendo 3DS games, Luigi’s Mansion 2 didn’t use the 3D effect much. Enabling the 3D effect made some environmental puzzles easier. Still, ultimately, the benefit of 3D with the original was to give the game a presentational boost with a diorama effect. It is now in HD and on a big screen, more than makes up for it."
And Pocket Tactics believes fans can keep "high hopes" for this one:
"All-in-all, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is gearing up to be a carefully crafted remake of Luigi’s slightly lesser-known spookfest, with fantastic visuals, engaging gameplay, and a glut of great one-liners from fan-favorite character Professor E. Gadd. Like many of Nintendo’s recent remakes and remasters, it’s not trying to reinvent the wheel, but why would you when that original wheel rolls so wonderfully down through the spooky domain that is Evershade Valley? If you’ve got high hopes for this one, keep them high, because it’s shaping up to be a real treat."
Be on the lookout for our review of Luigi's Mansion 2 HD for Switch when the game arrives later this month on 27th June 2024.

One thing that really draws me to Nintendo life is Alex's honesty in reviews. There are some games I don't agree with but I do agree here. The original was just ok, I was sad there were no portrait ghosts, and this hd rerelease looks almost identical. I'm glad 3 came out but even then it was a tad long for me, it's hard to beat the original.
Except the final boss is more on the unfair side.
I found 1&3 fun but shallow, but I missed this one when it came out. Probably wait and wait for a sale and grab it.
@rvcolem1 If you thought 3 was too shallow, 2 won't change your mind. 3 was by far the deepest Luigi's Mansion game, 2 is just a series of relatively small-ish mansions that you proceed through on linear missions.
@Bolt_Strike thanks for the info. I'm usually not a huge bash the price of things dude but 60 bucks for a game that was 30 on 3ds when it came out? That seems harsh all the way around. Ten extra bucks for TotK fine that was a 100 plus hour game for me and new. Hades 30 bucks I have at least 100 runs. Thor Love and Thunder 10 per ticket...not worth a dime (but I knew I shouldn't have gone to see it)
Very fond memories of this one.. They're going to make me buy it aren't they?
Of course this had to be the one Nintendo remaster that could've used a better save system where they didn't improve it. Of course. Was a baffling decision for a portable game back then, and remains even more baffling in an era of quality of life updates out the wazoo. I may still get this remaster, but this makes it a harder sell. Especially because I seem to remember that there aren't any checkpoints during the missions.
I remember thinking this game was a huuuuuge disappointment at the time. Just felt super shallow and all the tension of the original was gone. The first one is literally one of the first games I ever played, think we actually got it with the Cube along with Melee so it’s a mixture of great memories and being sh*t scared of even the box.
Are many of them saying that the touched-up graphics are worth the price for this...? Honestly, I'm flabbergasted...
Still not sold yet. I love LM3 and 1 but, at this point, it still feels like more of the same, but LESS, after number 3. Should have been a double bundle with LM1 like they did with Pikmin I feel. MAYBE one day I will still get it if cheap, but really no immediate rush at all.
It should have cost the same as the original, especially as this obviously lacks stereoscopic 3D.
Or it should have come bundled with the first game, which seemed as absolute no-brainer as the first game was already remade for the same hardware.
I still intend to pick this up, but I completely understand why many aren't so eager to double-dip.
I know I’m alone in this, but 2 was my favorite of the series. Still no desire to double dip as my 3DS is still charged up in my nightstand.
@DanijoEX-the-Pierrot Can't tell if serious. Sadly, some people are like it. I don't get it. It's the same game, it just looks slightly better. Why buy it all over again?
It still should not be full price or should have been a double pack with the first game to make it feel like it is worth full price.
I still need to play through LM3 which I bought years ago but I think the gameplay loop just isn't for me.
It wouldn't surprise me if Switch 2 has a Luigis Mansion 1 remaster with raytracing. The order of these remasters could be an indicator of that
Luigi’s Mansion is one of my favourite games ever the sequel was just terrible. No portrait ghosts, you can only between levels (and some levels are really long). The game was really easy but at the end of one particularly long level Luigi has to cross a narrow plank in the attic This was very hard to do when I finally got across I had almost no energy and quickly died h back tracking. Guess what start the level over which took around 30 minutes to reach that point
Personally, quite enjoyed Luigi's Mansion 2 in its own way even though I prefer 1 and 3 because of their more unique boss ghosts and structure.
I agree that it would've been nice to have a way to save the game in the middle of missions, (more? don't remember if there are any either) checkpoints etc. even though I didn't particularly need them myself when I played the original.
On the other hand, I can't completely get behind the complaints about the starting price because while I agree that it should've been lower considering it's a remaster instead of a remake at the end of the day it really doesn't matter that much when games - yes, even Nintendo ones if less frequently and significantly so compared to others - get repeatedly put on sale and in several regions you can even get them discounted day one either physically thanks to certain retailers (which is my case) or digitally through the Voucher Program etc.
I wish this was 1 and 2.
I've fondest memories of 1 and its the only game of the trillogy not playable on switch once this releases.
I've decided to wait on this, if not pass on it. I enjoyed Dark Moon on 3DS, but this simple remaster with no new content at all and charging $60 for a lick of paint that still doesn't make it look as good as 3 is just too much. I'm content to play the 3DS original, especially since I've liked to play the 3D remake of the first game on 3DS every October.
I didn’t like this one. Maybe played it half way through and just stopped. I enjoyed 3 enough to finish it though and was hoping they’d implement some changes to update it. But it sounds like they didn’t do anything appealing with this one to warrant a second try. Not even new content. Pass.
So hyped for this to come out! I love all three of the Luigi’s Mansion games, and will be excited to play the 2nd one on Switch. ScareScraper alone honestly makes it worth the purchase tbh
I used to play the original game while waiting for my shift to start at the shipyard I worked for at the time. Beat it and loved it. I'll definitely grab this down the line since it's been ages that I've played it.
Kind of impressed with the work they put into upscaling the game for the Switch. Along with adding in the right analog stick functionality, which the 3DS didn’t have on it. If it’s still the same game though, don’t think it will change too many minds since it was a different Luigi’s Mansion compared to 1 and 3. I’m still going to get it because it was a lot of fun for me, but for those who weren’t too fond of it over a decade ago… I’d wait then.
@progx : D-d-d... decade?
@SillyG yes, the original 3DS came out in 2013.
Sounds like saving mid level is gonna be an issue
The dichotomy between these journalistic takes and the comments from Nintendo diehards is stark. It could be that 2024 has games outlets jonesing for some reliable quality releases, especially first party. Or it could be that Nintendo fans have an unsustainable sense of what's worth $60, validly programmed by deep discounts and inexpensive bundles. But Nintendo's aversion to such pricing is why they're among the few studios that are doing well right now.
At the same time, I'm not sure if I'll get it myself. I have the 3DS one, but it's still sealed.

The original Luigi's Mansion was one of my favourite Gamecube games and Luigi's Mansion 3 one of my favourites on Switch but sadly this was never as good as either. The lack of portrait ghosts and the mission structure are the biggest culprits.
Nintendo's pricing is also all over the place, Metroid Prime Remastered was a budget release, yet this is a full price release and costs as much as Luigi's Mansion 3 did
@obijuankanoobie the original is still my favourite, it was a good length and had great replayability with the PAL version and it's mirrored mansion and even the standard ghosts look so much better than the shiny things we got later.
I really like 3 as well and it had some great portrait ghosts like the film director but that cat ghost you have to chase is beyond tedious and I wish we spent more time on the pirate themed floor and and less on some of the others
I guess this will remain as the only LM game without a co-op option for the main campaign.
I played trough the original and the HD version doesn't seem worth it, even if I borrowed the game for free from the local library.
@Thomystic Discounts have nothing to do with it. It's because of how the game compares to other products. First of all, remember that the original was $40. So you're paying $20 more, a 50% markup in price and all they give you is a barely noticeable graphics bump? Then consider that nearly every other game on the Switch is $60, including several far more ambitious and content rich experiences like BotW, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Smash Ultimate. So you're saying this remake of a relatively limited handheld game is worth the same amount as those masterpieces? There's nothing here that really gives the impression that this is a current gen console game worthy of full price, it feels more like they're copy/pasting the 3DS game and turning up the graphics slider (I know in terms of the work the developers are actually doing it's not actually like this, but from the consumer end that's exactly how these types of re-releases come off) and thinking "this is just like a game built from the ground up on the Switch" and it's really not. This is what the pushback against full-priced remasters is really about.
The saving is a bummer. It took me literally 5 years to finish the game because I played it once every couple months when I felt I could dedicate the necessary time. Not for those of us that play games in short bursts of 5-10 mins
I would really love a remake of the first one. I have this on 3DS and never finished it. Can't say I have any desire to double dip here. Absolutely loved 3 though.
