Update: Nintendo has now responded to Bloomberg's report, claiming it's "not true". Here is the full statement:
"A news report on Sept. 30, 2021 falsely claims that Nintendo is supplying tools to drive game development for a Nintendo Switch with 4K support. To ensure correct understanding among our investors and customers, we want to clarify that this report is not true."
"We also want to restate that, as we announced in July, we have no plans for any new model other than Nintendo Switch β OLED Model, which will launch on October 8, 2021."
Original article: The new Switch OLED model releases worldwide next week on October 8th, but a new report from Bloomberg suggests a 4K Nintendo system could still be on the way. According to the source, employees from at least 11 game companies are in possession of "Nintendo's 4K development kit for the Switch". These teams are believed to span the globe and range from large publishers to small studios.
One of the companies Bloomberg has been in contact with is Zynga Inc. - the mobile giant behind the upcoming free-to-download title Star Wars: Hunters, expected to arrive in 2022. The employees who shared this information were asked not to be identified as they were not authorised to discuss the projects publically.
Bloomberg goes on to state how a Nintendo system capable of handling 4K games "isn't expected to be released until late next year at the earliest". The developers in possession of 4K kits "declined to speculate on Nintendo's plans for another console" but said their "4K Switch games" would likely arrive "after the second half" of 2022. The source further notes how the number of companies actually using these 4K kits is "probably much higher" than the amount identified.
In July 2021, not long after the reveal of the Switch OLED, Nintendo said it had "no plans for launching any other model". Bloomberg's report claims the company had already "handed out the 4K kits to outside developers" by then, and asked them to design software that would support this higher resolution.
Towards the end of the report, the report says Nintendo could still decide not to release a 4K Switch, based on strategic reasons and technical challenges. What do you make of this latest rumour? Leave a comment below.

Why bother when the switch can only perform 1080p? I don't understand?
4k why is this a issue? πππ¬π π
@huyi Because the report claims that a 4k Switch model might be coming out
Might wanna update that article my dude...
Nintendo SAID NOPE! lmao
I trust Bloomberg with Switch news as much as I believe a person's uncle that claims to work at Nintendo.
One day there will be a more powerful model of the Switch but it is not this one
Suuuuuuure they areπ
@Meteoroid Furukawa seems pretty conservative so he will probably want to time the release of the next iteration of the Switch with the releases of BOTW2, Mario Kart and the next 3d Mario.
Unless the next console isn't a switch at all, which I doubt (I mean as next gen)... That is kinda bound to happen and all... Now, next year or in 5 years, that is the real question.
Is Nintendo readying another console design? Absolutely. All companies are always in research and design mode, and I would speculate that if Nintendo hasnβt already nailed down the specs, it likely will over the next year.
That said, it will not be a 4k handheld. If they stick with the current style of hybrid design then you can likely expect a 1080p handheld with a 4k dock. This is actually an easy thing to accomplish, Alienware does it with their laptops and Amp external gpu house. Whatβs more it would fit into their aim to provide a console around $300-350 markβ¦ the base console could cost that, with a 4k dock being an add on costing $200+. Whatβs more, Nintendo has always loved accessorizing their consoles.
Edit - Technically, they could achieve high res/fast frames with a β4k dockβ with the current Switch. And itβs just as possible if the current models continue to print money. No reason for N to toss out a whole new base console if the standard is still selling well and the devs can still support it. If either or both of those start waning, thatβs when weβll either see a Pro or next gen Switch.
Also, most of us would just be happy with stable, clear 720/1080 @ 60fps w/ HDR support⦠HDR makes a FAAAR bigger difference to picture quality than 1080p vs 4k
An upgraded Switch makes sense to me, even just in terms of Nintendo's own first party games and their performance. Breath of the Wild 2 at 60 fps, instead of 30 fps. Splatoon 3 at 60 fps, instead of 30 fps.
If the reports are saying late next year, that's a bit sad, as I was hoping for an earlier 2022 release...specifically 2/22/22, and maybe that can still happen?
I do think Breath of the Wild 2, Splatoon 3, and other 2022 titles like Bayonetta 3, and others like Metroid Prime 4 whenever it's ready, will be showcase titles for the Switch Pro, to help make the "sale" of the system and its better performance.
I think this is in reference to Nintendoβs next generation of console after the switch. It will be 4K and they will call it Switch U. Nobody will buy it though because they will just think itβs another version of the switch that they already have.
It's not surprising that Nintendo will deny the claim. After all, they are focused on the OLED model's launch. No doubt that they might be working on a newer model, maybe a next-gen successor, which, IMO, we won't be seeing anytime soon.
Nintendo, no matter how much I love them, will always be both one step ahead w.r.t. innovation yet one step behind when it comes to technology competitiveness.
tl;dr - I choose to ignore all rumours and will believe it when I see it.
Lol I'm glad Nintendo shut down the "report" before it got too out of hand. 99% of the time those "inside scoops" are hokey.
Even if it is true and this is just PR, it's cool to see them actively squashing rumors.
Here we go again. Lol
Poor Nintendo. Folks have been making a fake switch for years and no matter how wrong they are, these so called leakers and news outlets wonβt stop searching for their frankenconsole messiah.
Instead Nintendo has to waste time going βfor the one millionth timeβ¦stop making stuff up.β I am sure whenever the successor comes out, these psychics will claim they were right all along. Just like they were about Bayonetta 3 being vaporware.
It'll be an 8K model with a 120 inch screen projected directly into your mind and it will launch with Metroid Dread. It's on Amazon, I pre-ordered it back in 1820, it should arrive soon.
On a more serious note, why would Nintendo launch something when the vanilla switch still works so well and they haven't even launched the Oled version yet?
How many times do we have to teach you this lesson, old man!
@RogueSpyke yeah oled came out but nothing else it's worth it?
Yall are a trip.
That Italian girl trending on YouTube atm is right Blahh blahhhh blahhhh blahh blahhhh!
Itβs almost like they got sick of clickbait artists affecting their stock value.
Nintendo is going to deny this until they're ready to announce a 4K console, they don't want the anticipation for a 4K Switch to kill momentum for their current models and the upcoming OLED model. Nintendo's denial doesn't mean it's not happening, all it means is that it's not happening right now.
It's probably true but Nintendo doesn't want any potential OLED Switch buyers to hold off for any upcoming model. They will probably deny any rumor until they announce it themselves.
And this would be right on track to be the Pro/4k model v2 w/new nVidia chip and why wouldn't they finally just throw in the GBA slot now...
With the chip shortages they might as well wait and launch it as a Switch 2. Call it Super Nintendo Switch or Switch Advance or something like that. Don't bother with a Pro.
Mobile chips are just not there yet to do native 4K gaming at an affordable price point. Heck, traditional graphics cards still struggle to do that at an affordable price point let alone for AAA games. I'm in that camp of I'll believe it when I see it.
For those thinking it will be the dock powering the 4K aspect of the console, it would have to be one beefy dock... it would have to be 4K upscaled and not native. Considering the PS5 struggles to do 4K at an acceptable framerate.... don't expect the next Switch to be able to out of the box.
This is still going on, huh?
good old bloomberg
What will Nintendoβs infamous βninjasβ do If theyβve decided that clickbait rumors are a form of corporate sabotage aka FUD? The Oled models reception at its announcement was largely negative because of all the articles and YouTubers talking about the βconfirmedβ 4K support and now so close to its launch we have articleβs bringing up 4K support in a new model which is a classic FUD tactic. They mentioned false information affecting their investors so they are 100% taking this seriously.
@Kreko it wouldnβt be 4K in handheld mode. I assume it will support 4K when docked, if itβs real that is
My guess is, this has some truth to it, but Nintendo coming out publicly to shut it down sounds more like they don't want this to impact Switch OLED sales. They probably won't announce this until late 2022/early 2023 to coincide with either BOTW2 or MP4 and have no intentions of even hinting at anything other than OLED for the next 8-10 months
@Rhaoulos Because as more next gen games are produced that are too advanced to port to Switch they will lose 3rd party support which has been a huge staple of the Switch's success.
Leakers says this every year. Thought people would have learned by now when the OLED reveal shut them up
A Pro model or full successor to the Switch is going to come eventually. Itβs just inevitable. These people just like to keep throwing darts at the dartboard and hope something will finally stick.
I donβt know why I even clicked on this article lol.
That was a quick response, Nintendo appears to have a beef with Bloomberg publishing speculation as a report
I donβt think a 4K Switch is coming anytime in the next 5+ years. Even the Switch 2 is unlikely to support 4K. This is Nintendo, the company that didnβt do HD until the WiiU.
What did I SAY...but no people keep dissing the Switch and now they review they were doing it. The horse it out of the barn they can say all they want to dismiss but it's already now known such device where there to start with. They can try to deny but it's already to late. Seems to be the worse kept Nintendo secret. To NintenDoomed fandom need a shoulder to cry on. The fact Nintendo has to come out to say this tells alot they could've just dismissed this as rumors as before but consider what they said clearly shows there is something they are trying to hide now.
Here's the icing on the cake:
In July 2021, not long after the reveal of the Switch OLED, Nintendo said it had "no plans for launching any other model". Bloomberg's report claims the company had already "handed out the 4K kits to outside developers" by then, and asked them to design software that would support this higher resolution.
Didn't Nintendo back long long ago in a distant universe - tell developers to get their games 4k ready or did alot of people have their head up where the sun don't shine. That to me was something was in the works or out there and they knew something but tried to hide it. I suspect it's going to happen sooner then people think and alot will wonder why OLED v2 hardware now.
Nintendo denied it
SWITCH PRO CONFIRMED!!!!!!1!!!
I just want a more powerful Switch so all games come to it, not this "skipping the Switch for PS and Xbox only."
For Nintendo a new console also needs to offer a new experience, more than just 4K support. There are many ways to innovate beyond costly gimmicks, it needs something that is a core part of the box. They're already making a next-gen platform, and I can't think of anything but a next-gen Switch with a new innovation that will co-exist for some time with the current Switch.
Nintendo may say the Switch is in the middle of its life cycle, but I'm thinking there have been pressure from the industry moving onto more powerful hardware (they really want to release Eiyuden Chronicle on a Nintendo console). They're making promising games, but they can't be fixated to a low-power console forever. I don't want Nintendo to be left behind, not again.
Both Sony and Microsoft already moved on their cross-gen development enviroments, why can't Nintendo too? I hope we get to see a more stunning Bayonetta 3 one day, as well as seeing BoTW2 with high image quality, all while still enjoying the continued support of Switch.
And for those worried about this affecting Switch's sales, remember the fact the PS1 was still selling a lot like even after its more succesful successor launched, because everybody was hyped for it.
On the worse case, a Wii to Wii U situation could happen, but the Wii U launched after its predecessor had been quickly and quietly forgotten by the market. Switch is still selling like hotcakes, and that's a good thing then.
Also, Nintendo having technical challenges - even with NVIDIA as its partner - is laughable at worst. I hope they weren't refering to the spec side.
God, I'm glad that Nintendo is finally commenting on these, I'm tired of these fake leaks.
There you have it. Slitch Fro de-condirmed
Younger gamers might not remember but before one of the DS was announced Nintendo outright denied its existence
but then announced it a week later. They dismissed the Switch lite, and the pro. we didn't get the pro but got the Lite and the OLED (most likely due to the chip shortage). A pro IS coming. its just up to Nintendo when to push the button.
Yβall are too obsessed with numbers and specifications. Just play the damn games already in whatever resolution you can.
Bloomberg: Say it until itβs true, at which point, weβll say we told ya so! :: cue Bloomberg jingle ::
Iβm going to be an analyst: Bloomberg is going to say itβs happening even if they have no idea it is and when it does eventually come true theyβll say, βsee?β
EDIT: Bloomberg is the next Miss Cleo.
They wonβt release 4K until itβs cheaper! They purposely make last gen tech for a reason. 4K is still βnewβ so this probably wonβt be a thing for another 3 years I bet.
Nintendo will happily lie about having "no plans" for new hardware until days before a new piece of hardware is announced, but they don't usually call out the claims made by specific publications.
Bloomberg is as fake news as they come. Most articles are complete click bait, at best.
@Rika_Yoshitake Nintendo also said DS Lite wasnβt a thing.
@MH4 there clearly lying to cover base
I think nintendo learned thier lesson of what happens when they let these rumors buildup because all the backlash the oled switch got
@Ralizah nintendo is just doing that because they dont want to mess up the OLED switch's sales. The switch pro is very much real.
@Ryu_Niiyama
Usually Nintendo would just say they don't comment on rumours and speculation. They've been unusually vocal about these Bloomberg reports and Bloomberg isn't backing down. There's definitely something to this.
Oooh boy, here cometh them stinky leaks again. Boomberg is as reliable as CNN at this point so why botherβ¦
If they are doing a switch pro or not, handing over devkits or don't we don't know. To me, the next logical gimmick it's having a switch that's 3d (in the same way as the 3ds) and 4k or some kind of high resolution so you can turn it into a VR machine. One thing I know for certain is that one person I would hate to be at this moment it's the Zynga Inc CEO, I can hear Furukawa scream to this guy all the way from Kyoto.
It is also reported that Bloomberg lies.
Having people tinker with dev kits for future projects isn't anything new, it's how games get developed alongside new hardware. I do like how it's for a Nintendo console that doesn't exist. I wouldn't be shocked if Nintendo has been working on the next iteration of Switch, as they should. You always go back to the drawing board, making refinements with updates until you reach a point that you can make something smaller, faster, better, most importantly cheaper.
If I were a betting man, what this is.. is Bloomberg acting a bit spiteful over this Switch Pro that never transpired, more so since they've been the ones championing those rumors since day-one. Coincidentally (NOT!), they publish this somewhat speculative article a week before Switch OLED drops? No, doesn't sound petty AT ALL.
Some media outlets do nothing but put out click bait articles and news reports for views and ad revenue. Definitely never too big to try and make a company look bad for their own gain.
Considering the timing of this article coming out and how wrong the were with Switch Pro, I'd file this under the category of slander and defamation. Nintendo posting a tweet about it doesn't admit anything, they could be like me, tired of hearing about this time and time again. I never saw nor will I ever see Bloomberg as a credible source for anything.
Anyone can be partially right when they take 40 guesses. What's that saying, a broken clock is right twice a day.
theyβre gonna let the switch die arenβt they? the longer they wait to boost the performance of the thing the harder its phasing out will be. if it were 2 years ago the switch wouldβve laid to rest very peacefully while a new more powerful one came out and replaced them all. now at 5 total years of the same damn switch this thing is going to die really brutally. if Nintendo doesnβt want to make new hardware why canβt they just make amazing accessories for the damn iPad and put their games on there. the new little iPad mini is the same size as the switch but I would place it somewhere in the double digit multiples of being more powerful than the switch. srsly Nintendo just develop for someone else or make something new already.
@Yomogi,
We just need to move on from all this and accept the fact Nintendo will run with the current hardware with it's usual mid generation revision, the console is still selling well despite all the naysayers insisting Nintendo is doomed unless it brings a pro version out, and the OLED model will only push more hardware, just like the 3DS XL did.
In fact mid generation power increases are pretty rare Nintendo did a bit of an upgrade with the new 3DS models, hell even core consoles from Sony and Microsoft have only released more powerful versions once, and they never sold that well compared to the regular versions.
Wait for the Switch 2 or whatever it ends up being called.
@Ocaz If Nintendo went third-party, you can kiss Bayonetta, Star Fox, Metroid etc goodbye
@Ocaz,
No they won't, the Switch in it's current form is only going to die from lack of power in the eyes of the core minorities, who already own the two powerful consoles from Sony and Microsoft, and possibly a gaming P.C, they are in no way representative of the wider Switch buying market, or video game market in general, they are niche at best.
@johnvboy i think its gonna start to seep into those users sooner than you think. There are some noticeably poor performing games that people will buy on there. theyre gonna wish that the games they want to play performed as well as games theyve played in the past. Thoughts like why doesnt this look and run as good as mario odyssey. not a power comparison to other consoles. Its how the games are perceived on the same system.
@Dm9982 You see the Steam Deck as the perfect model for Nintendo to spin their wheels on how to develop the next Switch iteration. 4K? No. I don't want to see Link or Mario in 4K. I want a stable 720p / 1080p before I ask for anything more.
A lot of these people don't get is Nintendo won't match Xbox or PlayStation in the PC spec war. They move to the beat of their own drum, their games are vastly different from what the other companies produce.
If anything, Nintendo did their magic and tweaked enough to make the OLED stand out with a vibrant screen that compliments Nintendo games with their bright color palettes.
@skywake Nintendoβs rapid rebuttal surprised me as well. Interestingly Bloomberg are also quoting Zynga as officially denying they have any Nintendo 4K dev kit as well. I reckon @EriXz could be right about Furakawaβs screams! π
@Ocaz,
This perception however is based on the want's and needs of the core minorities obsessed with graphics and frame rates, which the wider video game buying public simply does not care about, but only time will tell.
Switch OLED "Expansion Pak".. think about it!π€π€―
@kingbk This is the main reason I want a Switch Pro/Switch 2 myself. With the rest of the industry moving on to stronger hardware, the Switch is too underpowered for them to keep up the support. And not having third party support can torpedo their success, usually when Nintendo loses out on third party support their systems don't do well (only exception being the Wii, which only succeeded because they attracted large numbers of casuals before they abandoned it for mobile). They have to be thinking about stronger hardware of some kind in the next 2 or 3 years if they want to keep the sales momentum up.
@Bolt_Strike,
The Switch was an under powered console right from the start. which was one of the main reasons the core minorities thought it would fail, it's been in the marketplace alongside more powerful hardware for years now and still defied all those negative sales predictions.
As long as Nintendo keeps it's first party games coming the current models including the OLED will be just fine, Nintendo games have always pushed the sales of their hardware, the third party stuff will get niche sales at best, as people will buy them on the other platforms, as they always have done.
This is disgraceful. Does Bloomberg have some ulterior motive for this article. Their timing seems directed at disuading people to buy Switch OLED. Not surprised Nintendo were quick with a rebuttal. It doesn't matter if this rumour is true or not (and as a consequence, it doesn't matter if the rebuttal is either!) this does more harm than good.
I think the OLED looks lovely. But I'm hopefully going to wait till the Switch 2. But where did I get the idea of Switch 2 from? Places like Bloomberg. I don't even know if it's real lol.
@johnvboy
'The Switch was an under powered console right from the start.'
Lol, no it wasn't.
@GrailUK,
I think Bloomberg are just trying to salvage some credibility after their failed Switch pro rumor.
By the way I am not dissing the Switch in anyway, I love the console and have an OLED model ordered, but lets get real here, the Tegra X1 chip that was also being used in the Nvidia shield was older tech even when the Switch launched, and was way below the performance benchmarks of the regular Ps4 and X box One consoles.
Not surprising as Nintendo had not gone for power since the gamecube, compared the the Wii U it was a jump, but bear in mind that was also using older technology because it had to be backwards compatible with the Wii.
The real story is Nintendo have given 2K games 2 dev kits.
I prefer my leaks covered in a cheesy sauce and a lightly toasted herby breadcrumb topping. Oh and for them to actually exist as well
@Bolt_Strike
This idea that Nintendo relies on 3rd party content to sell their hardware is a myth
The best-selling games on Switch (and almost every other successful Nintendo platform) have been 1st party exclusives.
Of course Nintendo is working on a more powerful Switch, though it might not be released as a Switch but perhaps a Switch 2 depending on how it'll work with compatibility and when it's actually ready.
And of course Nintendo will claim they aren't working on it, as otherwise the sales for the current Switch and the new oled version will plummet. Especially with the upcoming Christmas sales.
Bloomberg has no credibility left.
@johnvboy i suppose so but i still firmly believe Nintendo will be pushed against soon. Really not sure why they didnt give it a boost in power with the OLED switch. i dont think anyone asked for extra oomph on the 3ds but they hugely improved performance on the new 3ds
@Ocaz,
I would like a Switch Pro too, but I am under no illusions it would make very little difference to Switch sales going forward, in fact it could cause far more issues, as you have the potential to divide, or at the very least cause confusion to an already very lucrative market, which was why Nintendo announced the OLED model.
@Snoyflake,
Think you have that the wrong way round to be honest, how much more evidence do you need?, the Switch Pro is not happening, all those rumors have been debunked time and time again, and you still refuse to face realty.
@Kreko The article doesn't state what form factor the console takes.
@thegametb Exactly. If Nintendo can just get a full standard gaming laptop cpu/gpu combo shrunk down to fit in a Switch like form factorβ¦ running something close to an A13 or so chipset, so it can run 1080p in handheld at 30/60 frames depending on graphical demand, and on an OLED then itβs seriously golden for a βProβ or even Switch 2 model. Not everyone wants/needs 4k, but for those that do, leave it up to an optional dock to help push it there. The Series S and X prove that games can easily be handled and made to run either 1080 or 4k with little effort in development - as long as the ground work is there and the dev kits make it easy. And it also proves thereβs plenty of room for 1080 or 4k audiences.
@MrGawain,
"Nintendo have given 2K games 2 4K development kits"
Sounds like on hell of a confusing article headline.
@Bolt_Strike
When something is coming in the near future, Nintendo always says things like: "We don't have anything to announce at the moment." or "We are always working on new tech.". But this time, Nintendo unmistakably have denied the rumor.
Of course Nintendo would say no. Have Nintendo announced a 4K Switch? No they haven't. They can deny it with ease.
Meanwhile, they're about to launch the OLED model. The worst time for consumers to be spooked by a possible new hardware/revision is when you're just about to release a revision.
4K Switch is inevitable. It almost certainly exists right now and will be targeting 2023 launch alongside BotW2.
Possible road map
Holiday 2022 new 3D Mario game
Holiday 2022 Mario movie
January 2023 new 2D Donkey Kong game
March 2023 4K Switch
March 2023 BotW2
Anyone can be an anonymous tip, be they a βtrustworthyβ individual (in so far as you can trust theyβre leaking correct info, not in so far as you can trust them to not leak info), someone one who wants to push an agenda so leaks a false rumour to get conversation happening, or a troll who just wants to get people riled up, or someone who is just guessing. And that goes for people within the industry too.
@johnvboy hmm maybe not state of the art but holistically I wouldnβt say underpowered. It was defo around where it needed to be and im not going to complain about a 5 year old console starting to show its age. No hate here btw respect your opinion π
@Rika_Yoshitake I mean Nintendo has said nope before and they were lying, the switch lite come to mind.
@beantherio They cover way more than video games. Even if theyβre wrong on this somehow theyβre a super well respected business publication.
Most likely timing for such a device would be holiday 2022 alongside BotW 2 (perhaps delayed if BotW 2 is delayed) which would mean an announcement at E3 2022 at the earliest.
So this rumour while it may end up true, probably has the intention of trying to sabotage Switch's holiday 2021 sales.
@kalosn nice pfp ππ
@johnvboy 100% agree
@Ocaz it's like you've never been around for consoles before this one. 5-7 years with the same main console, and supplementary refreshes, is standard. Nintendo, and any platform maker, can't just ***** out yearly upgrades like Apple and just cut them off at some point from compatibility because thats just not how the console industry works based on both game compatibility, as what dev wants to develop for 10 different SKUs at a time, and consumer expectations. It is really not a hard concept nor a surprise they aren't phasing out Switch yet.
The Switch pro rumours are back... yay.
I still 1000% do not believe we will EVER see a Switch pro.
However I do think the Switch successor will be very similar and be able to output 4K. This is why Nintendo already is ramping up 4K development.
@RogueSpyke the report implies that but it could be wrong and Nintendo saying it is false may be true also. That is not to say that Nintendo isnβt working on a 4K dock. That is a completely different thing and is something they could sell so people wouldnβt have to buy a new switch.
@Bakfug relax. Sick of these conversations always having rude people. I can optimistically hope for a new system and state my speculations and use history to make observations. Go fight someone else.
here we go again switch pro coming just like it was this year last year.
@nocdaes I think Kong will come out next holiday season and itβll be 3D. As for a new Mario game I donβt see that happening just yet. Would love to see a new punch out, icarus, f-zero or a arms 2 though.
It's so easy to predict: BotW 2 is confirmed next year, so the 4K Switch will be out next year, it is too big a game not to be a launch title.
@Bakfug all 4K games can play in 1080p just the same, they just downscale is all. This is why I think they may release a new model which is a switch with a 4K dock and possibly a 4K dock for those that already own a switch and want to upgrade to 4K. That would be the best marketing I think there could be. They may not do a dock separately though but I hope they would.
Reading between the lines, Nintendo are basically denying there's a 4K Switch, but that doesn't mean their follow-up system won't be 4K capable. They can't lie as they're making a statement for investors so this likely means there never will be a 4K Switch, but it doesn't preclude their next gen system being 4K.
Honestly I think it's probably a bit early for Nintendo to be sending out development kits for anything to third parties, the Switch will probably go for another 3 years after last year's bumper sales. So likely the report was just wrong from the start.
Does anybody actually visit the bloomberg website or do they just click bait there way along, journalism at it's best.
Anyway' as usual in my life, I will stick with a console that cares more about gameplay than what it looks like.
Shocker too!! Nintendo responded.
@GrailUK,
Totally agree with you, the power was perfect for the consoles hybrid nature, and as a handheld it was awesome performance wise.
That would be pretty low even by Nintendo's standards to bait and switch (ha) the OLED model with a switch 'pro' so quickly within a year.
I seriously hope that they just release the switch successor in 2 or 3 years with backwards compatibility instead.
@Meteoroid Everyone here knows that it will happen if the Switch family is still selling. I'm with you. Anyone trying to stop you buying an OLED in the chance dangling carrot of a 4K model next year is a liar! In just the same way as anyone claiming that a 4K will never happen!! If you want to look at it in "fanboy" terms, maybe they have a vested interest in the big N going down........ Hahaha
@dew12333 it's mainly for big investment firms to pretend like they know what they are investing in. It's not surprising that there is...not so great information about the industry though, with how much information is distorted and poorly reported.
@Dirty0814 a ton goes into both marketing and R&D for systems, so fast tracking something so far above the current Switch that it is just a new console and not a refresh when you have a for sure thing on hand AND during a huge chip shortage is not what I'd consider a good strategy personally. Just keeping a normal console life cycle and putting everything into the successor is a way smarter choice.
@Ocaz The irony is your response is significantly more hostile than mine, which wasn't hostile at all. Nothing you said really makes any sense and unfortunately we are somewhere where you are inviting replies by giving your input
Nintendo responding so fast probably means Bloomberg gave them a heads up before publishing the article, which is a common practice.
Considering how far away the rumour says the launch of the console could be, there is not much of a point to be taking it too seriously and even if it were true, it makes sense that Nintendo would want to shoot it down immediately.
Personally I am ready for an upgrade whenever it happens, but tbh this rumour if anything should give solace to any people scared of having a "Pro" model announced right after buying a Switch now, since it basically says that you shouldn't expect any upgrade by minimum end of next year and even that it makes it sound very unlikely.
@Bakfug your opinion. Your opening statement is rude and unnecessary and the rest of it gets no better. Like I said relax and fight someone else. I see u have a giant post replying to 3 people at once. Go bug them.
I mean, they did just release a new version, and if it was confirmed that a better version was coming out in a year or two, then they aren't going to be able to sell you 3 switches instead of just 2.
@huyi In fairness, the PS4 Pro and PS5 can't handle 4K for their games either and have to rely on techniques to recreate a 4K image, and much of the industry seem to be headed to the future of FauxK rather than full 4K. I highly imagine a 4K Switch would do a similar thing.
Me personally, I'd just rather have hardware good enough to run games at 60fps and 1080p, since I prefer to play on a smaller screen closer to my face. But if we have a new Switch that allows us to have performance and visual modes, then everyone wins.
Oh you dont say
Even Xbox Series S (which got Series X CPU) can't deliver 1440p/60 fps on most games so how on earth a mobile console (with upgraded chip) can deliver 4k/60? the answer is DLSS but still i would prefer a solid 60 fps/1080p
@KiraMoonvalley "I'd take 1080p screen and 1440p native docked with dlss to boost it to 4k."
Take my MONEY!!!
Though I think it will be difficult to get 1440p + DLSS in a small enough heat/power profile right now. Few years away.
Is this supposed to be a follow-up to the other supposed leak where Nintendo told developers to make their games "4K-ready" for a heavily rumoured New Super Nintendo Switch Pro XL Deluxe 2?
Hardware nowadays has really brainwashed people. 1080p is still a decent standard to follow, and the only reason why some games look crappy is because they never even tried to hit 1080p in the first place. An increase in resolution for a console doesn't mean increase in resolution for a game.
I think it's safe to assume at this point that the next Switch iteration was meant to be 4K, but it had to be scaled back to the OLED iteration due to the many knock on effects of the Covid pandemic.
BotW2 was very likely also tracking for Holiday 2021 originally. I think the Covid impact is grossly underestimated.
@Dm9982 I think Nintendo has nailed down the specs. We're still in a components shortage and they probably saw they couldn't outpace the scalpers with the production. The OLED uses the same parts, minus the screen, bigger storage and kickstand, as the Switch V2 and they have good stock of those parts.
@ModdedInkling I would gladly take 1080p screen on the next Switch. It could upscale to 4K when dock and I'd be happy.
@progx
Yes, at the very least the next console would have to get an increase in resolution.
@progx this is exactly what has happened. Well done landing on the truth.
Meanwhile everyone else questions Bloomberg's integrity like it's the Daily Mail !!
@Madao Nintendoβs denial also implies there wonβt be an upgrade to the current Switch, quote ββ¦ Nintendo Switch with 4K supportβ. Kinda leaves them covered for a 4K device which isnβt the βSwitchβ
Although I'm in the Camp that this isn't true I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to be making a 4K Switch just to release along side BotW2 and have 2 Versions. The only thing that makes me lean towards this being true is Nintendo tends to say No Comment or any other number of sidesteps but they flat out denied it and I don't remember exactly what system it was I believe it was DS to DSi where Reggie (I believe) said "There is no new iteration of "system" in the works" and then like 2 weeks or so later BAM they announce the new iteration.
Won't people EVER shut up about 4K Switch Pro?
Re: the update:
"A news report on Sept. 30, 2021 falsely claims that Nintendo is supplying tools to drive game development for a Nintendo Switch with 4K support. To ensure correct understanding among our investors and customers, we want to clarify that this report is not true."
Translation:
Nintendo is NOT working on a Switch with 4k support, the dev kits we sent out are for our next gen console code named "NX2" which is not a Switch, it's a Switch 2, therefore we aren't lieing.
Not joking. Nintendo never said the dev kits going out was a lie, only that a Switch with 4k support is a lie. Because it is a lie, 2 years from now there will be a new console with 4k support and it won't be a Switch.
So on the downside no Switch Pro, but on the upside, a new 4k next gen Nintendo console probably in 2023. Not bothering to guess the name, but "Super New Exciting Switch" has some nice initials. π
@progx Yeah this is exactly what I think happened. As for wether or not the specs are for a Pro type mid gen upgrade, or a 2.0 full upgrade, Iβm not sure. Weβre heading to that time frame where it could be either, but Iβm still leaning towards a mid gen refresh. I doubt they want to exile their current install base. The smartest business play is a boosted dock first, followed by a Pro model that does 1080 handheld, and around 2024-2025 a full 2.0 upgrade of the base console, followed by a dock refresh.
@Richnj the PS5 can play plenty of games at native 4k.
But do agree with you that the switch 2 would be great if it was 1080p 60fps.
When are y'all gonna stop using BLOOMBERG as a reliable source. They have been wrong on every single front and yet you keep printing stuff from them. ?????
It's ok guys,Bloomberg's uncle works at nintendo
@Ralizah they're also typicaly less direct and more avoidant in their denyal, this leaves no room for uncertainty.
@Dilly-Mick Right. Japanese companies typically avoid direct confrontation and accusations like this unless the information really is just flat out incorrect.
@Snoyflake Considering Zynga has also denied the report and Bloomberg has been rumor-mongering on this particular issue for years, I'm inclined to trust Nintendo for once.
@Snoyflake you'd be surprised how easy it is to get people to lie for attention or with an agenda.
If bloomberg is mistaken this is't a widesspread conspiracy, more like a collaboartive effort to spread misinformation.
Nintendo made it clear that they are dispelling the rumors so their investors aren't mislead. If Nintendo was misleadinmg their investors how would that look on record?
@HotGoomba I'm glad that Nintendo is finally commenting on these, I'm tired of these fake leaks.
Their reply own verifies there is a Pro version. If they just mention in passing that's one thing but to mention shareholders in the same replies tells something else.
@Dilly-Mick youu'd be surprised how easy it is to get people to lie for attention or with an agenda.
And how easy it is for someone to lie to prevent insider information from being told as well. Nintendo has agenda and that is to prevent shareholder bulking not consumer buying. Just think how fast they use Switch and ShareHolders in the same line. That by itself if it was rumors why even mention shareholders-they just say it's plain run of the mill rumors. But the story and how they replied tells more then they want anyone to know.
@SwitchForce wut?
What kind of falacious logic is that? you're making no sense
As for your edit where you took what i said out of context:
Just because you believe nintendo does have a reason to lie doesn't mean that they are lying. I could just as easily say bloomberg is trying to cover their hide since they got a previous prediction wrong and are trying to justify why, but the truth is, we don't know who's right.
Given the evidence Nintendo telling the truth seems more likely to me.
@SpaceboyScreams,
First party and the indies have been the staple to the Switch's success, and mainly the first party games, the third party triple AAA games that have come to the console have sold niche numbers at best, as there are better versions on other consoles, and the games are released later for the switch.
Only the core internet minorities are worried these games may no becoming for the Switch, Nintendo's own game will always drive sales, and have always done.
@Dilly-Mick believe what you want but their reply already tells they are trying prevent leaks. The use of shareholders mentions is the most obvious that's something they don't want people to know about something. If it didn't concern share holders why even mention them. That in itself says the hardware exists but if you want to live your alice in wonderland by all means go ahead.
@SwitchForce preventing misinformation and preventing leaks are not the same.
The mentioning of their shareholders more likely means they are making themselves abundantly clear, bloomberg is mistaken, end of story.
I'm sorry my opinion offends you, but calling it "alice in wonderland" diesn't prove anything. I'm just on the side of truth here. Your opinion is valid but do you realize Its based on assumptions and presented as fact?
I hope you excuse me if I don't respind again I have grown-up things to do
Here we go againβ¦
@johnvboy If you're really going to try to argue that Nintendo doesn't make 3rd party sales one of their priorities then I don't know what to tell you. You always have had bizarre arguments and I'm getting tired of trying to speak simple reason with you.
βWe donβt comment on rumours and speculationβ¦β
Apart from when it suits us.
Anyway it could be the 4K switch is actually gonna be the switch 2 ready for release in 2023.
Therefore Nintendo wouldnβt be lying in saying thereβs not a new updated version of OG switch releasing other than OLED, yet at the same time it also being true a 4K new model is in the pipelineβ¦
@SpaceboyScreams,
Not sure why you are turning a simple response to one of your comments into an argument, and I never stated third parties were not important to Nintendo, I simply stated they do not bring the biggest sales to the console, in particular the western triple AAA games released on the Playstation and Xbox, usually released much later than on Switch, with graphical and frame rate compromises, that people on here like to complain about time and time again, and often state they will stick with the versions on the more powerful machines.
So as you are tired of trying reason with me, have a quick look at the 1 million plus selling games on the Switch thus far, then if you can pick out any of those western triple AAA third party games not made by indie developers I would be very interested, if you have time of course.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Nintendo_Switch_video_games
@slipperygerik,
This rumor will only ever die when the Switch 2 is announced, and within that time no Switch Pro has been released, well for some anyway.
@johnvboy @westman98 First parties have the highest sales per platform, but the consoles with the highest sales tend to have better third party support (again, with the Wii being the sole exception). That suggest that third party games do have a significant effect on the decision to purchase new Nintendo hardware, but individual third party games are not selling as well. In other words, an individual gamer might want several first party games the most, but might also want a few of their favorite third party games to convince them to buy the console, but when you look at the Switch userbase as a whole, there aren't individual games that the userbase really wants that badly.
In the end, what it comes down to is having a large quantity, quality, and variety of games that take advantage of the hardware. They can come from just about any source, first party, third party, indie, but there needs to be a lot of them to draw people in. If the third parties aren't coming, Nintendo's sales take a significant hit because there's much less quantity and variety of games coming and you get a Wii U-esque drought (and yes there were other factors in the Wii U's failure such as marketing and design, but lack of games was definitely a factor). So I don't see the same insane sales success of the Switch repeating itself without some level of third party support, Nintendo makes a lot of great games, but not enough to sustain itself without them. If they just say "screw third parties" and try to go it without them, the next console will probably have a ceiling of about GC or N64 numbers. They need to pay some level of attention to what third parties need to get their games running on Nintendo hardware even if it's not the latest, greatest, cutting edge stuff.
@Bolt_Strike,
Third party support is a very broad term, and of course Nintendo do need it, my point is they do not totally reliant on it as the following list on the Switch shows.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Nintendo_Switch_video_games
And as I have previously stated, the type of third party support most on here want, ie the western triple AAA titles, have not been big sellers for the console, and in reality are already pretty much Sony and Microsoft games anyway, as these developers want their games on cutting generation hardware where ever possible.
I also feel you are falling into the trap of thinking what motivated the core gamers, when in all reality the wider market will not bat an eyelid that the western triple AAA games are absent, they tend to buy because what the console offers them, rather than what it does not.
@Bolt_Strike
Of course Nintendo platforms need to have "some" kind of 3rd party support in the sense that non-Nintendo games need to be released on the platform. And that's indeed the case, as Switch has gotten more indie support than pretty much any game platform in history outside of Steam.
The lack of Call of Duty, GTA, Madden, non-Legacy Edition FIFA, Battlefield, Assassin' Creed, FarCry, or other big 3rd party titles that are common place on PS/XB/PC hasn't hurt the Switch at all since launch, so I'm not really expecting the lack of those games to suddenly start hurting Switch now.
The most successful Nintendo platform of all time - the NDS - saw it's biggest 3rd party successes in the form of Professor Layton, Dragon Quest, Petz/Imagine, Cooking Mama, LEGO, and a ton of licensed shovelware games that have now largely migrated to mobile. Looking at the biggest non-indie 3rd party games on Switch, you'll see Minecraft, Monster Hunter, Mario + Rabbids, and Just Dance. See a pattern? There are very few if any of the big western AAA games which dominate the best-sellers on PS/XB/PC. All those games I just listed would be on Switch whether there is a 4K Switch Pro or not.
As @johnvboy said, the vast majority of consumers will buy the Switch (or any product for that matter) based on what it offers, not what it doesn't.
@westman98 Even the mid-tier third parties like Monster Hunter and Mario + Rabbids are pushing the Switch to its limits, developers of those types of games seem ready to move on. We'll probably see those kinds of third parties go away within 2 or 3 years if Nintendo doesn't come out with something stronger in that timeframe.
@Dilly-Mick well for sacks this is what people do when we talk to walls. They talk about their opinion but it clearly affects them when they are called out. So unless one has insider or uncle works for Nintendo are clearly NintenDoomed fandom. But yeah I also have grown up things to do as well. You are not proving Facts let's be clear on that what your stating is also your opinion. One should be clear about stating facts from their opinion.
But back to the happenings a 4K Switch is going to come out whether the NintenDoomed fandom says otherwise. Nintendo with their reply using Investors and Customers are never in the same sentences. And that to me meant the cat got out of the bag before they could close it. Bloomberg for all their News - Nintendo could've did it the right way and it just rumors but when using Customers and Investors in the same reply signals their mis-step to stop the coverage and make it more akin to a real 4K Switch is coming.
@Bolt_Strike
Monster Hunter and Mario + Rabbids are nowhere near pushing the Switch to it's limits (unless your definition of "pushing the limits" is "not running at 1080p docked/720p undocked at 60 FPS").
Monster Hunter Rise is getting a big expansion next year, while Mario + Rabbids got DLC in 2018 and is receiving a big sequel next year, so the idea that the developers of those franchises are on the verge of jumping ship from Switch is ludicrous.
Just a rumour but they'll be launch games for the next gen Switch IMO, if any truth be had in there
Move along, nothing to see here. Nintendo are being totally honest and itβs a different Nintendo that have been filing Patents for a 4K Switch.
https://twitter.com/smetaldave64/status/1443713473762906117?s=21
They are not lying. The Switch OLED IS the Pro. But what makes it Pro is not the Switch itself. It's the dock. A "PRO DOCK" will be released later on. The Switch is fine for mobile gaming and with the OLED display batteries might even run a bit longer. 720p for Handheld is fine.
Everyone remember how there is now a setting about updating the dock firmware? Which dock? This one? No. Another one coming out, it will just be like an external GPU on a Laptop. You will have your Switch pro 2K Resolution being upscaled to 4K via Nvidia's magic in docked mode.
So... Switch Pro = Switch OLED with updated dock further down the line, most likely around BOTW2 launch. They are not lying when they say, there is no new model coming. True. New Dock is coming. It's really simple to read between the lines and in my book it's what makes most sense. Power when docked, everything else is not sustainable in such a small form factor without upping the cost significantly.
This way also PARENTS have a choice. Switch OLED will be fine for most. If they want, they can upgrade to the new dock without fragmenting the userbase and all games must still run in handheld mode (and on the old dock).
It's basically the same model like with Nintendo ONLINE now. Base + Premium Upgrade if you want.
@electrolite77
Oh wow, those patents pretty much describe exactly how DLSS works π€.
In fact, both patent explicitly single out Nvidia's Tensor cores (i.e. the processors used to run DLSS) as hardware that can be used to perform all the necessary matrix multiplication calculations invovled in the upscaling algorithm.
@Scollurio
The dock firmware is for updating the Ethernet port in the Switch OLED model's dock. That's all there is to it.
@westman98 Yes, right now, with this model. I'm only speculating anyways, so you might be right. Still, I think there's more to it and that would be the most viable way of doing it.
OR, the Switch 2 is closer than we think, which I doubt because the OG Switch is still doing great.
@electrolite77,
Wonder if this could have something to do with the Switch Dock update feature.
@westman98,
Thanks for that, makes sense really.
@SwitchForce i wasn't going to respond but... Well you remind me of the kind of person I was when I was younger.
Even though we will have to agree to disagree on this matter; I am sorry to have made you feel I wasn't listening.
@Dilly-Mick don't get what your saying but that's related to that person not me. How one can come to that conclusion is beyond logic.
@Scollurio OLED isn't a upgrade that's using v2 hardware if one wants a upgrade that will be a GPU/CPU upgrade or new model that will be 4k/DLSS ready. What your describing is grabbing for straws where there is none. OLED isn't a Pro model by any stretch of the imagination to begin with. That just a Display update nothing more and along with 64gb Storage.
@Scollurio
You should let go of the idea that there will be some external GPU in a Switch dock that will transform the Switch into a Switch Pro. It's not possible.
Either the Switch itself can output 4K graphics (be it native or upscaled) or it can't.
@westman98 Personally I don't hold my breath, just think that this is highly likely and possible. Maybe it's not a dedicated GPU, maybe it's just a CO-GPU or maybe even just a dedicated upscaler. I don't think that there will be a 4K-capable Switch CONSOLE in the forseeable future. And as I said, I'm speculating. None of us knows.
@SwitchForce I know what the OLED model is and isn't. I don't think that the latest bloomberg reports are all garbage, that devs have 4K dev kits for Switch. I still think there's some truth to it and the most logical, most Nintendo (i.e. cost saving) way of doing something like that, would be via the dock. There are standalone upscaling thingies around 99,- I don't think some fancypants Nintendo upscaler in the form of a dock for about 149,- isn't too unreasonable. Again, just speculating, we don't have to agree!
@Scollurio
A dedicated upscaler? Sure, though that could introduce input lag, which is why I highly doubt it will be used.
A co-GPU? Bandwidth limitations make that impossible.
Something strange is going on here the Bloomberg article has vanished. Did NL get a Cease and Decease letter from Nintendo to censor that article? I think they did otherwise they would've said something there about it. That would tell me there is 4K development kits and upcoming hardware reveal from Nintendo that Bloomberg pop the news on and raining on their NIN house release announcement.
@Scollurio Nothing wrong with them doing cost savings but is it real cost saving for consumers when the OLED cost more then the v2 with the same hardware? I think the OLED is the test bed for the Switch Gen2 Model with OLED and better GPU/CPU that will do 4k/DLSS when Docked not when portable. Alot of people failed to notice this. They could have various model tier.
1. OLED 4K/DLSS Switch Premium
2. OLED Switch standard
3. OELD Switch Lite
These model can exist together and those want to pay more can get the 4K model system. I think the fact Covid19 played a part of this otherwise a 4K unit would've shown itself if not for PreOrders to come for it.
@SwitchForce Sure they can co-exist, I just think it's way easier and cost effective to put whatever hardware is needed to enable 4K on the TV in the dock than in the switch itself and depending on what the USB-C port on the Switch OLED is capable of, there could still be a "beefed up dock" coming to enhance output on the TV. The Switch OLED makes sense in many constellations.
@westman98 Do we know any specifics on the throughput of the Switch OLED USB-C port?
And again, just as a reminder, I just enjoy speculating and comparing points of view!
@Scollurio
USB-C 3.0 (which is what the Switch uses) has a transfer speed of 4.8 Gbit/s (600 MB/s). By comparison, the Switch's RAM has a memory bandwidth of just over 25 GB/s. So USB-C 3.0 is nowhere near enough to facilitate data transfer from the Switch's RAM to an external GPU.
USB-C 4.0 has a much faster transfer speed of 40 Gbit/s (8 GB/s), but it's still not an ideal limit. Besides, the Switch's memory bandwidth is not all that high to begin with, so if Nintendo ever decides to create new hardware with upgrades that include better memory bandwidth (an ideal bandwidth would be close to 100 GB/s), then even USB-C 4.0 would be too slow for an eGPU to work.
@westman98 Unfortunately you make a lot of sense. And the remaining option, an upscaler, would as mentioned indeed add input lag. Maybe Nintendo won't care. But players might. It's just odd to me that they released the Switch OLED, clearly knowing that everyone who follows tech and gaming news was waiting for the PRO and will be disappointed by the OLED.
Hm. But on the other hand, Nintendo often does "weird" things and to the average consumer, it won't matter, they might even get the OLED (not knowing there's anything else) for little Karen and those waiting for the PRO will either hold off or get the OLED anyways.
Still, now the Steamdeck will get lots of the fanfare that was to be had for the Switch Pro. Ah consumer's lifestyle.
@Scollurio
"It's just odd to me that they released the Switch OLED, clearly knowing that everyone who follows tech and gaming news was waiting for the PRO and will be disappointed by the OLED."
Nintendo doesn't develop hardware based on the needs and desires of online video game message boards.
@westman98 I don't know, how do you? I'm sure there is some market research and guess who would be the potential target demographic of a more expensive, capable Switch "Pro"? Surely not the normies trying to get a deal for Jimmy's Switch at Walmart.
