When Nintendo closed out its latest Direct presentation with the full reveal of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, the world briefly got a little bit louder as fans celebrated the glorious return of one of the company’s most revered franchises. Finally, after its initial announcement back in 2017, Prime 4 is scheduled to launch in 2025, and it looks spectacular.
Although an overwhelming majority reacted to the trailer with excitement and anticipation, there are also those who felt disappointed, citing the game’s similarities to previous Prime entries, both in terms of its visuals and gameplay.
Here’s the thing: I get it. I really do. After 7 (or, if you’re anything like me, 18) years of waiting, our imaginations undoubtedly start to get the better of us, and after games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and even Super Mario Bros. Wonder show just how far Nintendo is willing to deviate from the tried-and-tested formula, it’s only natural to assume that Prime 4 would also mark a significant evolution for a series that began in 2002.
Now, I’m not saying that developers should rest on their laurels and be satisfied with the bare minimum; experimentation, pushing boundaries, and challenging player expectations are always a good thing. But with Prime 4, I think it’s important that we examine our own expectations and understand what this game really is.
Let’s look at the development time to start. There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that Prime 4 was announced far too soon, and few would argue against that. Many Nintendo first-party games these days are revealed and released within just a handful of months, yet almost two years after Prime 4’s announcement in June 2017, Nintendo’s Shinya Takahashi confirmed that development would be restarted from scratch at Retro Studios.
So let’s break this down. If development started in January 2019, that means Prime 4 has had roughly five years to cook in the oven so far (a large chunk of which was likely also affected by the pandemic restrictions in 2020 and 2021). 20 years ago, that would seem most unusual, but for big-budget titles in the 8th and 9th generation of consoles, this is considered the norm. The only difference with Prime 4 is that we, the fans, knew about it all along (good luck with The Elder Scrolls VI, Bethesda).
I know many folks are probably reading this and thinking something along the lines of, “Well, that’s not our problem, is it?” - and you’d be right. What I want to illustrate, however, is that when a game becomes a known entity and is subsequently kept under a veil of secrecy (for seven years, mind), it’s incredibly easy for expectations to become inflated. It’s happened to me on multiple occasions.
It's also impossible been to avoid the growing speculation that Prime 4 might actually skip the Switch altogether and release on its successor. An understandable conclusion, to be sure, but nevertheless an unfounded one. Nintendo has consistently labelled Prime 4 as a Switch game, including it in its regular lineups during financial updates. Now, I know companies like to embellish information or employ misdirection from time to time, but to outright lie about which platform Prime 4 would launch on? Nah, I never bought that. Prime 4 looks like a Switch game because it is one. Even if it winds up being cross-gen, the Switch 2 version will simply be a shinier version of what we've got here.
Aside from that, it’s important to consider that Prime 4 is, well, the fourth mainline entry in an ongoing narrative. When you look at franchises like Zelda or Mario, those games (for the most part) rarely put numbers in their titles, essentially giving developers a blank canvas on which to work their magic. Prime 4 is the continuation of a story that concluded on a huge cliffhanger in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, with Federation Force providing only a few tantalising clues as to what might occur in the future.
The thing is, this isn’t a reboot or a drastic overhaul of the Prime series; it’s simply the next chapter, just like Halo 4, just like Uncharted 4, just like Gears 4. Heck, just like Pikmin 4! And I think we'd all agree, as good as they are, that none of these games did anything particularly groundbreaking when compared to previous entries. Again, it comes down to expectations and what we think we want from the next game versus what it’s actually going to be.
Finally, I want to highlight the visuals, specifically. It’s clear to me that Metroid Prime Remastered was a bit of a test bed for Prime 4. Looking at the two side-by-side (which I did, by the way), there’s a noticeable improvement with the latter, but you can tell that the technology applied to Metroid Prime has probably been repurposed for Prime 4. With this in mind, you’d be forgiven for thinking, “Oh, well Prime 4 looks just like the first game”. But I would say go back and look at footage of the original trilogy on the GameCube and Wii and I think you’ll be surprised at just how far Retro Studios has come.
Metroid Prime 4 won't be the franchise's 'Breath of the Wild moment', and that's just fine — we shouldn't expect it to be. What we can hopefully look forward to is a thrilling journey into the fourth mainline entry in one of Nintendo's most celebrated franchises of all time. 2025 can't come quickly enough.
Are you expecting to see some radical new gameplay hook for Metroid Prime 4 in the coming months? (1,514 votes)
- Yes, it needs to stand out from the previous entries
- Probably, but I'd still be happy with the classic gameplay
- No, just maintain the feel and tone of the original
- I don't care, just give me more Metroid
Did Metroid Prime 4: Beyond reveal meet your expectations, or did you have something different in mind for Retro Studio's latest entry? Let us know with a comment down below.

Wait til they show off the VR version on Switch 2...
I'm not sure how anyone could justify expecting a large departure from what we've already seen in the Prime series. It's a first-person exploration/shooter series, where the player plays as the same character each game.
If you want something different, start with Federation Force 😝

Don't tease me like that.
The graphics really do look like a Wii U game. I wish they did better textures because I legit thought we were getting another remaster at beginning of trailer
I don’t care too much about this game myself but keeping a series how it was is very important, I love when series try new things but don’t change the core stuff.
By (of) the Way moment.
Ah yes, a game for the souped-up Wii U looks like a souped-up Wii U game. Seriously, what was that guy expecting?
Frankly, Metroid already had their BotW moment back in 2002 with Metroid Prime.
Internet: This looks like a PS4/Switch 2 game. This trailer is probably running on a PC.
Internet: Lol Wii game.
Metroid already had its "BOTW moment" with the first Prime game 20+ years ago. (EDIT: @B_Lindz beat me to it by a hair)
@Hyrulewarrior : I don't think the Switch ever showed its age more than in the Prime 4 trailer.
And no, poorly performing games don't count as they're more indicative of incompetence from developers (cough Game Freak cough). Prime 4's performance is more than fine, but the graphical shortcomings were immediately apparent from the relatively low quality textures on the ship in the opening shot, which made the whole thing feel a touch anticlimactic.
If footage from this pre-launch build is any indication of what is to come, then my guess is that an enhanced version for the Switch 2 (with higher quality assets) is off the cards, which would be disappointing, especially given that they've had so many years to future-proof the game.
No, it won't. And no, it is not OK.
I've played Dread and I've played Prime 1 Remaster. Why on earth am I going to play Prime 4? It looks the EXACT, and I mean EXACT same game all over again.
Franchise fans will buy, play and enjoy. It will not reach a wider audience, yet again, and why has THIS taken so long to develop exactly?
This is precisely what I thought would happen. A perfectly fine game, but nothing ground breaking for Metroid.
Watch the sales do nothing special and Nintendo park the franchise for a decade.
Also, it's hardly great looking is it? Doesn't look like we're seeing new hardware in action here that's for sure.
Wasted opportunity. And a waste of resource too. As if THIS is all Retro have to show for themselves after TEN years. It's crazy!
No wonder Retro have been on radio silence since forever! What happened to "no news is good news"?! Absolutely not the case here lol
I think that the game is ready for some time now but it was delayed because they what it to be a crossgen(enhanced for switch 2) title so it IS somehow similar to breath of the wild... It was delayed so that it would be a launch title for switch...
A reinvention of the wheel would be nice, don't get me wrong.
But as long as it meets the expectations of what a Metroid Prime game should be, that'll do just fine.
Metroid Prime 1 was already the series BotW moment.
@nocdaes Seems you're judging the whole game, that's maybe a year away from release, on the contents of this short opening trailer. Nintendo don't tend to give away the highlights on Day 1.
@LadyCharlie But... isn't that the job Metroid Prime Remaster just did? Giving us a Remaster of Prime only to follow it up with Prime 4 as more of the same is really disappointing.
@nocdaes You're not wrong, and I don't disagree.
But admittedly I, personally, am not sure how much new could be added to Metroid Prime, without making it a completely different kind of game.
I hate BOTW so that's fine by me 😅
@gcunit I disagree. Nintendo are one of the best at releasing a trailer that shows you exactly what you are getting. I know you're saying this won't show everything... but come on, this direction is disappointing.
The game is called Metroid Prime 4, what did people think it was going to be like? The game looks great and since when was a game playing like Metroid Prime a bad thing? I swear some people like to moan about anything these days, like that dreadful take shared from Twitter, if you don't want to play Metroid Prime, then don't buy a game called Metroid Prime. From what we saw, I'm very excited to play it and can't wait until next year to do so
Couldn't agree more that Metroid Prime 4 is first and foremost a Switch game no matter if it will be also cross-gen or enhanced by Switch 2, but the same can be said about Breath of the Wild which was a Wii U game that also came out on Switch - it wasn't until Tears of the Kingdom that the developers were able to make use of the Switch's power as they mentioned in the interview for that game (https://www.nintendo.com/us/whatsnew/ask-the-developer-vol-9-the-legend-of-zelda-tears-of-the-kingdom-part-3/).
That said, it all really depends on the contents of the game more than the tech and in that sense I agree that it might not happen considering the actual development time after restarting the project... but at the same time I bet most couldn't care less as long as it's a great game in general and a great Metroid Prime in particular and I also agree with others here that Prime has already been the the Breath of the Wild moment for the Metroid series - funnily enough it's exactly because of the drastic gameplay change compared to other games in the series that I'm still not sure if Prime is for me, definitely want to give Remastered a try before 4 comes out to find it out!
@LadyCharlie True. I guess the disappointment stems from the fact this is Retro and they've not released a game for ten years. All that time... combined with all the time we've been waiting for MP4 since its announce. The bar has been set very high.
@tjhiphop 5 years for MP4. I'm talking about the studio. Retro haven't released a new game since Tropical Freeze on the Wii U in February 2014. As a fan of Donkey Kong, yes, I'm going to throw some toys out of the pram when it transpires THIS is what Retro have achieved in ten years!
Uh, Metroid Prime was already the ‘BOTW’ moment. Getting a new Metroid Prime means getting a new Metroid Prime. I don’t want a generic FPS, I want the game to feel like Metroid Prime.
The Switch is marginally more powerful than Wii U, so its graphics looking marginally better than what the Wii U could produce is to be expected.
Prime Remastered looks stunning and graphically, is about the best we could hope for from a Switch game. Prime 4 looks to be much the same but with more impressive environments and I'm sure there will be some gameplay innovations to make it stand out. All I'm hoping for is, more of the same but a more lengthy adventure. Prime 1 was a tad short for me.
I’m pretty sure Metroid Prime Pinball was Metroid’s “BotW moment.”
@Ooccoo_Jr @B_Lindz I like the sentiment, but really I would say Metroid Prime was the series' (i.e. Metroid's) Ocarina of Time moment.
@nessisonett crazy to think that a new Metroid Prime game being like Metroid Prime is now somehow a bad thing
@Solomon_Rambling 🤣🤣🤣
In all seriousness, that game is unironically the best of Nintendos pinball adventures by a country mile. I'm definitely gonna try and add that to my DS collection.
@nocdaes Retro haven't been working on this for 10 years, they only came on board when development was rebooted in 2019.
I'd argue Metroid Prime was the series' Mario 64 moment NOT the BotW moment.
I'm not so sure any game franchise other than Zelda has had a BotW moment...
GTA6 might have something to say about that in 2025. Metroid Prime 4... based on the evidence so far, I think not!
On the outset it looks like standard Metroid Prime stuff. However, I expect there to be some sort of new gameplay gimmick. Maybe there was a hint shown in the trailer, as Nintendo has hidden things in plain sight before. Also, we’re at the point where we have to expect that all new Nintendo-made games are going to be cross-gen and have built-in enhancements, most of which can not be shown in a Switch(1) targeted trailer, for obvious reasons. Resolution and framerate improvements, of course. But I believe we’ll finally see the addition of separate, more detailed, textures that unlock when played on the new system.
@gcunit I get your point but I would say the leap from Super Metroid to Prime was far more radical than Link to the Past to Ocarina. Ocarina was a faithful 3D imagining of the existing Zelda formula but Prime going first person was a much greater departure. Other M is what Prime should have been if simply applying the existing formula to 3D.
I'll admit, the trailer wasn't the thrill ride reveal which I had partially expected, but that's ok. Prime gameplay is kinda hard to hype up, it's much more about the atmospheric exploration, which is actually more calming and cozy than action-oriented. The final shot on the jungle world is what really gave me hope that this is going to be a stellar game. It's good to know Prime 4 is sticking to the roots, the formula is still very unique and I can't name many other games that emulate the Prime feeling of solo-exploring a strange & mysterious alien worlds filled with secrets & lore. I'm glad we were only shown a small clip which is more than enough, I'd like to go in as blind as possible. Give this game some patience, this is going to be a magical experience. Also, the original Prime Trilogy holds up really damn well graphically!
It does not need to be this revolutionary game. Metroid fans and nintendo fans will undoubtedly be satisfied with this game. The people that are complaining are most likely people who are not huge metroid fans.
@InnerSound I hope so, but if it really does transpire to just be more of the same then it's highly likely Prime Remaster would have eroded sales rather than grown them.
@carlos82 I understand the theory of wanting more from a new entry of a series. But we’ve wanted a new Prime for this long because the gameplay loop is so satisfying. If I want a new Prime, it’s needs to be Prime.
I think making this a Switch 2 launch game could do wonders for the series, as people will want a game to play on their new system and they won't really care what it is aslong as it's good and a major title. When I bought the PS4 on launch day I bought Killzone Shadow Fall even though I hadn't played any other a Killzone games by then simply because it was the only exclusive and I just wanted something new to play on my new console.
That's why I think BoTW did so well on the Switch as each week there was new owners and the only real exclusive to get was that game, then word of mouth spread partnered with excellent reviews and marketing from online gaming sites really helped push sales.
So I think if it's done right, Metroid Prime 4 could be a big hit and the biggest seller in the series.
Does Metroid prime really need tweaking? Isn't more of the same what we've been wanting/expecting? I'm fine with it - more Metroid prime is just what I wanted.
You'll never please everyone. There are loads of people who dislike the new direction of 3D Zelda.
Expecting a radical, genre shifting, BotW-esque moment from a direct sequel with "4" in the title is ridiculous, full stop. It will be a better version of Metroid Prime, which is more than okay. Esp considering this will likely be the last big OG Switch game (and possibly a cross-gen title).
I was hoping to be able to play Prime 2 and 3 before 4 comes out. (I don’t have a GameCube or Wii anymore and missed them when I did.) Oh well…
Metroid Prime felt fresh is 2002. After 22 years, 18 of which we’ve seen nothing, it is time for a fresh new take on the gameplay and presentation. What they showed of Metroid Prime 4 looked stale, straight out of the early 2000’s.
It seems understandable that a series of games would play similarly within a generation or two, but in 18 years, games have evolved. Looking at the gameplay in MP4 is like looking into a frozen time period of old. I don’t expect MP4 to play like contemporary FPS’s, because it is not a FPS, but I do expect that Nintendo evolve the gameplay to fresh, new, unique heights.
@nocdaes If you have to ask yourself "why would I play MP4?" after playing dread and Prime 1 remaster, clearly Metroid Prime 4 isn't for you. I'm a die-hard fan of Metroid and the Prime series since 2002, and Prime 4 is exactly what I was expecting.
I greatly dislike it when people criticize a games' direction, but don't give one single idea or suggestion as to what they would do that's so radically different. The original Prime was the radical change for the Metroid series, let's not lose sight of that. The only thing I can think of is to make Metroid a third person action adventure game, maybe something like Uncharted, as to preserve the platforming elements, which I would also be down for.
But then it wouldn't be Prime, so I wouldn't want it to have the Prime name. I would prefer it to have a different title; Metroid Delta or something, and begin a new subseries. What would you do that's so radically different? It's not like we can make Prime into a pinball game or some-oh wait... 😜
And then regarding the whole breath of the Wild angle, which is weird to me, as much as I enjoyed BOTW, it doesn't replace the traditional Zelda formula, at least for me. I hope we get another Zelda in the style of ocarina, Wind Waker, or Twilight Princess again.
P. S. MP Pinball was actually awesome. ❤
I thought it looked great. I see fps games on ps5 and Xbox, and they all look samey and boring to me.
I guess there’s a YouTuber out there telling people the textures look bad, and that’s why people are all regurgitating that … people can’t think for themselves nowadays it seems
Metroid Prime was already their "BOTW" moment. As of now, it just needs to keep that direction and ignore the people that wanted something different and make ridiculous graphics comparisons or assume too much of a short trailer because the problem isn't really the game itself but their mentality since they expect a game that somehow equals that wait, which is a ridiculous expectative to begin with because it hasn't even been worked on all that time. The project had it's problems and was practically started again.
All the game needs is to progress through the story, nice soundtrack, a good setting, prime's gameplay and nice graphics and performance. From the looks of the trailer and what we got with remastered that last part is a given. New mechanics and a bigger scale would be nice, but any other change that is too drastic could distance it from what many of us love from the franchise. Drastic changes and new directions don't always equal something good. In fact, many times they are changes for the worst.
I just hope Metroid Prime 4 is not another Metroidvania.
Imagine, this is the quality we're getting, on par with the excellent prime remastered, but the map is a massive sprawling planet, maybe even multiple planets, surpassing the maps of all previous prime entries, hiding loads of collectibles and power ups, offering multiple paths for completionists, speed runners and sequence breakers.
My first thought was wait when does this happen in Echoes
Makes one wonder what direction they were going in the scrapped version
The hook it needs online multiplayer deathmatches will be awesome. Oh and a duel release love to see it running on next gen switch 2.
@B_Lindz I think that was its OoT moment tbh
I'm kind of like... we know literally NOTHING about the gameplay other than 'you still have missiles, can shoot, can scan, have a vaguely similar UI, and have morph ball'.
Like did people want from Prime 4 that wouldn't cover those things? We don't have any clue what the upgrades in the game will be, how exploration will be handled, what the map is like, what the story will be like, or what anything in the main game will be really. All we saw was the opening tutorial segment.
I dunno, people who are like 'well they shouldn't have released Prime Remastered if the game is this similar' are putting the cart in front of the horse. We know nada about what's the same or different other than it's not a revolutionary different game.
I didn't need it to revolutionize anything but they could have at least brought it up to modern standards a bit in terms of movement. The walking and shooting still looks as slow and floaty as the already sluggish feeling original trilogy. There's still little to no enemy knockback or reaction when they're shot. Again I don't need modern ragdoll physics or something like Dead Space but an enemy simply flashing or acting dizzy when they're hit by an energy blast as the only means of knowing you hit your mark is so unrewarding. It's not necessarily how it looked visually that disappointed me it's just that I wasn't itching to be the one controlling Samus from the footage even though I know I'll enjoy the exploration aspect as usual. The series has never sold very well and this was their chance to change that but I don't think they have. I'm worried kids used to modern shooters won't see anything to jump over to and it will take Nintendo another 20 years to try again.
It looks like a Metroid Prime game and that’s what I want from a…checks notes… Metroid Prime game.
I don’t really know what people expected from it. And I don’t understand judging it as if they’re doing nothing new based on what is presumably the opening of the game.
Hey NL, Metroid icons at missions and rewards tell everyone! 😄
What BoTW moment were you looking for? This is a safe entry into the franchise for a lot of gamers. Sure you could say Dread was that or Prime remaster. Both are completely different styles and satisfies different fanbases. The step child that tried anything remotely "BoTW" different was Other M and we see how that went (I enjoyed that game regardless of the countless eye rolling story.) Just very interesting when people want something more/different but when you consider other franchises that release more of the same, their fans are happy with that.
I was honestly a little disappointed that gameplay looked more or less exactly like prime 1. I know it was just a little taste, but definitely expected some bigger changes. Even the suit just looked like regular old samus.
Was it announced too early? Yes. However, I do not believe Nintendo would have passed the project to Retro had it not known externally. They probably would just have aced it altogether.
@larryisaman Yeah you and the other checks notes less than 2 million people that buy Metroid games on average (two have broken 2 million, none have broken 3 million except Dread and only barely). Fans probably want the series to get more frequent love from Nintendo which would require sales in the 10s of millions like their other big hitters which isn't remotely possible with checks trailer more of the exact same.
@N8tiveT3ch just because other M was a bad game doesn’t mean Nintendo couldn’t overhaul Metroid prime for a whole new type of experience that people like
I won’t say I was disappointed but I didn’t have much expectations for it anyway. People that are gassing it up saying it looks stunning need to stop. It’s clean and polished visually but that’s it. Just looks like another prime. Maybe once release is closer we will see a different looking game and they can announce some game mechanics that peak peoples interest. 🤷🏾♂️
@Crockin you're not wrong. I mean they could give Samus a fairy that turns into a gun that copies objects to solve the chozo ruins puzzles and defeat enemies.
People are mad a metroid prime game looks like a metroid prime game. Devs are darned if they do, darned if they don’t. Ok, I am done.
I'm no expert here but didn't MP Corruption basicslly end the MP story? I realise this is a ridiculously minor point but I would kind of prefer the game to be calked Metroid Beyond (1). Unless of course there are story links
@Warioware if you want to get technical the story lies in between metroid 1 and Metroid 2. and spoilers at the end of prime 3 you see the ship from hunters following Samus.
I'm happy that it looks like Metroid Prime, the lonely isolated atmosphere of the series must be challenging to capture in a punchy trailer. Remastered reminded me of how great the original was, could say it primed a new audience of those who never played it before or like myself, who'd not revisited it in years.
The footage we saw is clearly from the beginning of the game. It's way too early to say anything about the gameplay. I do hope we'll see some cool new upgrades at the very least.
Visually it looks solid too. Not that different from Metroid Prime Remastered, which is a good thing since that game looked great for a Switch game. Remember, they're targeting 60fps here. For a 60fps game, it looks pretty damn good.
Doesn't need to be revolutionary. Not everything needs to be open world and have a map that takes you an hour to walk from end to end. Just needs to be more Metroid Prime on a bigger scale than was previously possible, with a few new abilities and mechanics. There will undoubtedly be some new gameplay feature that runs through the game in the same way Echoes had the light/dark worlds and Corruption had multiple worlds to jump between.
@SpaceboyScreams Dude, Metroid games weren't selling that much even when they were praised by critics and being the new thing. It's not a matter of doing something really different to have success as that can sometimes work and many other times fail miserably. Look at 3D Zelda games until BOTW, and even that game has many core gameplay elements of the Zelda franchise. Look at Splatoon 3 and it's sales numbers and tell me how it's so different from Splatoon 2. Look at Smash Bros Ultimate. Or Pokemon if you need even more examples. And I'm just mentioning Nintendo stuff. If you want, I can give you examples from other companies. None of those reinvent the formula and just have a few changes and were really successful.
Besides, it was a really short video showing basic core elements from the Prime series like sticking to be a first person shooter... They haven't even shown anything to conclude that it's the "exact same" as previous Prime titles in terms of scale, mechanics, etc.
A trailer is just a trailer. Gameplay has to be experienced.
I wasn't particularly hyped for TOTK, based on the gameplay reveals from early last year. They were unable to convey what would make it stand apart from BOTW. But when I actually started playing the game and Ultrahanded something together for the first time, it just clicked.
I hope to experience a similar revelation in MP4. And even if it's only more of the same, then there's a good chance the long development time will show in the gameplay quality.
@SpaceboyScreams Again. We’ve seen a minute and a half of what is probably the opening section of the game. It’s entirely unfair to say “oh this looks exactly the same as the others” when we’ve seen so little of it.
Of course it looks like the other games. It’s Metroid Prime. But whatever’s going to differentiate from the rest of the series it isn’t going to show up in the first minute. There are so many new things they could be doing from power ups to how the world is set up etc., none of which can be demonstrated from what they chose to show. If you have a problem with the trailer not giving a broader scope of the game then fine but it’s obvious Nintendo knew they only needed to show what they did because that would be enough to make most fans happy.
But yeah you’re right, this better reinvent the wheel because nobody would buy Nintendo games that don’t look or play radically different to other games in their respective series. Like Pokémon. Or New Super Mario Bros. Or Smash Bros. Or Splatoon. Or Mario Party.
This is why I hate Nintendo fans sometimes:
You gripe for years about wanting a trailer, or an announcement then you get a trailer and complain because…..the gameplay is too similar to….Metroid Prime?
Ugh.
It looked awesome. I don't know what people saying otherwise were expecting. Prime remastered is already the best looking switch game imo. And this looks better. It isn't hyper realism, but Metroid really never has been. And we still haven't seen much. They've still got a year to show stuff for those who aren't sold yet. Everyone needs to chill out.
I’m not sure what everyone expects from prime 4.
It will tight clever corridor programming with out of date graphics and textures.
It’s on a Switch very old and weak hardware.
This my argument Nintendo should have had Switch 2 out by late 2023 or early 2024.
Time it arrives going on rumoured specs it will be out of date and old already hardware wise.
And no new third party titles will be on Switch 2 or will be extremely changed.
I have purchased nothing for my Switch this year it’s getting remakes or new paint on games or the same type stuff. They should have moved on a year ago to Switch 2.
Can’t believe I’m saying this after the Switch has been so great to me, but I’ve got stagnant and bored with Switch now.
@Warioware Prime 3 ends the Dark Samus storyline. The teaser at the end of 3 hinted at future adventures.
Right now I'm assuming the Prime moniker is going to be used for all first-person 3D Metroids. I really hope we don't get Dark Samus yet again as some kind of twist. I'm fine with Prime 4, and any future sequels, revolving around Samus' fight against Sylus.
Whilst the Halo-style action of number 3 was great, it would be great to have the bleak loneliness of number 2 back for another shot.
I'm not a fan of the new Zelda games, so I'm glad they are sticking to what made the original trilogy so great.
@nocdaes you make a lot of assumptions and already draw a lot of conclusions.
Let’s wait till further down the line, Nintendo usually really starts promoting a game a few months in advance. Look at TotK, we didn’t know new gameplay elements before just 1,5 months in advance.
I think it was a big mistake naming this Prime 4. New fans who aren't interested in investing time playing a whole trilogy to understand the story, wont buy this probably. Also, they are purposely making this game look AS identical as the prime games, because they are continuing the story from prime 3. The game's title should of just been Metroid Beyond, and made a whole new story with new characters and such. I wouldn't be surprised if the space pirates, ridley and such are also part of the game. Looks like they were only aiming towards the existing fans of the franchise tbh..
Why did people expect a different kind of game, when it's part 4 in a series?
If it was only called Metroid Beyond, and was a brand new "spin-off" game, not part of any of the previous games, then I would expect to get something new and different.
Just look at Donkey Kong Country, which has basically been the same, since the beginning. If we get a new Country game, I know what to expect. A side scrolling platformer, and that exactly what I want, and not some new totally different genre.
We've seen the opening bit of Metroid Prime 4 lol. Do you judge Prime on it's first opening level? We have no idea what is around the corner. Not expecting open world or anything, but the metroidvania gameplay looks in tact. Anything after that is still kept from us.
Imagine taking out the Metroidvania in Metroid..... just as BOTW and TotK ripped the Zeldavania in Zelda.
No thanks, dont let that BOTW crap get into another franchise.
As long as it's better than Star Trek: Beyond
Actually, I lie. I kinda like that movie.
@gcunit Im still convinced that the switch 2 will have a VR add on
Give mario kart 10 a VR mode, do something with pokemon legends Z-A in VR, and like you said, let us play prime 4 VR
Instant hit
@N8tiveT3ch there’s all kinds of stuff they could do. Customizable suits, brand new abilities, new beams, mobility options, space flight combat etc etc. they could change up how the environment works. Possibilities are endless with a franchise like Metroid.
And fwiw, I’m interested in this new Zelda precisely because it’s not just the same thing again.
@Crockin what were you expecting? For them to spoil the new suits? We all know there are going to be new ones, its a staple in the franchise.
@Chopper25 I don’t doubt there’s more. We haven’t even seen what the central gameplay mechanic is. Just saying from what we’ve seen so far, just looks like same old
While metroidvanias are maybe my favorite game genre, I've never been able say I love an actual Metroid or Castlevania. The ones I've played are mostly solid, but they're always a little too claustrophobic, a little too isolated, and a little too focused on the main objective. Thanks to Smash Bros, I've had an attachment to Samus since long before I actually played any of her games, but I just haven't been able to find a reason to care about the rest of her universe. Aside from the perspective, most of my favorite metroidvanias actually feel like they take more inspiration from Zelda, with side quests, likeable or interesting characters, and mandatory and optional upgrades that fundametally change how you play the game. The isolation might have to stay just to maintain Metroid's identity, but I really hope they find a way to make me feel more like a hero on an adventure than a rat in a maze.
The reveal was highly dissapointing. It says basically: You wanted a new Prime? Here you have a new Prime, with the same graphics! Surely I expected it to a bit more special, with a bit stronger graphics. So far I can't see this being better then the first Prime (or Echoes). Just another entry. Yes I expected to much, but maybe they delivered to little?
Generally, if there's a new title from Nintendo and I think it looks too much like a previous entry, none of that winds up being important if when I play it, it's fun
@Henmii That's fair. I guess the general consensus is that a game that was started development twice...Nintendo did not do themselves any favors considering there was no updates during the process to the point of it becoming a meme/vaporware. So I can see why the hardcore gamer would be disappointed. What they should have done was release a CG trailer with no gameplay.
I can’t get my head around how there are so many people saying “there’s no way this is running on Switch” while simultaneously there’s so many saying “the graphics should be better” 🥴
Experiment too much and we might have a "Sticker Star moment".
Many said it above and I echo the sentiment: Metroid had its BotW moment with Prime, 20 years ago
I just wanted Metroid Prime 4 since that was the splash screen lol I didn't see "All New Metroid Adventure" and I'm fine with that. The only thing I want out of the extra delays is a robust Online Multiplayer Mode. I also wasn't really expecting to be wowed by the graphics and coming from someone who really doesn't care about graphics (hence the username) 4 definitely looks better than previous entries and probably any Wii U game as far as I can remember lol who knows maybe the extra time was for Switch 2 development as well.
@N8tiveT3ch,
that also would have been bad. Metroid Dread trailer was stunning by the way, and a sidescrolling Metroid that looked really nice.
@Gameplay4fun keep the 8v8 online play out of Metroid.
@Henmii I know it would have been bad. it was a troll sentence considering no one like good CG trailers anymore.
“In the end it still looks like a Wii U game.” You mean to tell me a game running on a console barely more powerful than the Wii U looks like a Wii U game?? Surprise! People expect miracles.
Metroid fans on the left, Nintendo on the right. People are just looking for excuses not to buy it now.
@Aawill91 7 years in and people still act shocked at the limitations of the console. Someone should do a side by side of the new game and GC Metroid Prime.
This might get me shot... but I bounced of MP Remaster completely. I'd missed the Prime games completely on GC, and relished the opportunity to jump into the Remaster once it was announced. I just couldn't get into it, and I'm usually a big fan of Metroidvania games (love Hollow Knight, Blasphemous 1/2, new PoP, The Last Faith, Ori games, Salt & Sanctuary).
There just seemed to be an excessive amount of backtracking, and little ... excitement I guess? Objectively I can appreciate Prime is a great game, alongside the Remaster setting a benchmark for what makes a 'great remaster, but I just couldnt click with it.
Strange as I adore Dread. I'd personally prefer to see Dread 2 instead of Prime4... just my opinion!
Exactly. Prime 4 doesn't need some radical change in gameplay.
It's hilarious that some folks are surprised it's running on Switch while others(and maybe some of the same, knowing how folks on the internet roll) are expecting it to look better. lol
@nocdaes in one of your comments you compared gta6 and Metroid 4, saying that the two short videos of both games are evidence to gta being a leap forward for that series.
You must be basing that all on graphics as I didn’t see anything in either trailer to show any new directions for either of them.
They showed us the prologue level. I'm not sure why, based on that, we're all typing extremely conclusive, definitive statements about the gameplay and how it pushes or doesn't push the series forward. As Metroid prologues go, that looked cool. I don't know.
Another important point: there is nothing coming out right now with Prime-style gameplay. So more Prime is not exactly saturating the market. It means we now have two Prime games on modern consoles. Not a crowd.
Breath of the Wild was competing against an entire era of open-world titles. Prime 4 is competing against Prime Remastered.
@link3710 I think the negative comparisons to Prime Remastered make no sense. I thought we were all aware that the entire reason Prime Remastered looked as good as it did was precisely because Retro were using it to develop the tech for Prime 4. I've always assumed both games were going to look very similar.
@Beaucine Exactly. We got 3 Prime games with the last one releasing 17 years ago- even if this is a “standard” sequel I won’t care because it’s been so long since we got one and the formula was far from stale by the time they moved on.
And anyway, all of the Prime games had their own twists; the core gameplay was effectively the same across all 3 but they all have their own identity. No reason to believe Prime 4 won’t be doing things of its own make it stand out in the series. Saying this is just “more of the same” is like saying OoT and Majora’s Mask are the same when they’re patently not.
BotW is fantastic, but overrated. And not everything needs to be that.
Prime 4 can absolutely be just a super-polished Prime game.
@WiltonRoots
Yes! This! Nintendo fans also don’t seem to understand that Metroid has never been a major seller, so it would make no sense to invest tens of millions of dollars into a game that, at best, will sell 1.5-2 million copies.
Like I said, Nintendo fans are obnoxious when it comes to the things they choose to complain about.
@B_Lindz I’d even argue that Zelda had its Metroid Prime moment with BoTW!
Metroid Prime 1 was the franchise's "Breath of the Wild" moment.
@nocdaes
The audacity...
Oh well suit yourself(Varia Suit XD)
It won't be the franchises' revival we're expecting either, and that already happened with Dread. Kensuke Tanabe is incapable of delivering what we really need, and that's okay, Prime Remastered will always be there.
@roy130390 I'm not saying being radically different alone is enough to sell more copies lol it has to catch the attention of a wider audience. I know this fanbase is passionate/rabid but y'all are tiny as hell and sticking to your guns is killing your franchise.
@larryisaman we've seen enough to know how it will control. Whatever else we'll see will be its gimmick. This was what they decided to show us after 7 years, this was their chance to wow millions of people. I'm glad you're wowed but I highly doubt it will be enough to hook the masses. I'm excited for it as a fan but I'm disappointed that it seems we might have to wait a while for Prime 5 because they played it "safe" yet again.
I never expected it to reinvent the wheel. I always assumed it was just going to continue what the original trilogy established albeit updated with modern day HD graphics. Honestly it had been so long since 3 I had mostly given up hope of there ever being another Prime so I'm just happy to finally get another game in one of my favorite series ever. I'll never ever forget all those many years ago(ugh im getting old..) playing the first Prime on my Gamecube and the magical experience it was. Retro instantly became video game gods.
im honestly shocked at some of the negative reactions to this direct ive seen. this has been one of the stronger directs in the switch history and its the end of the generation! I get the vibe that a lot of people who are complaining about it were not around last gen, cause that timeframe was downright DIRE
Open world is overrated. Most of the time it's just padding. I prefer a condensed world with a lot to see.
Nintendo "fans" are the reason why Metroid isn't more popular than it is, the large majority of Nintendo fans refuse to give Metroid a chance for no reason
Funny how people are responding with everything from "This looks way too good to be on Switch" to "WOW, This looks so outdated."
I think it looks great but the environment they chose to show off was perhaps a little bland in terms of color palette.
It will be different. The HUD has no beams or visors. There is an area for secondary weapons (all we see is missiles). Metroid Prime Hunters had secondary weapons instead of beams and they changed the colour of the lights on your arm cannon.
My dream Metroid game would allow you to combine beams with secondary weapons into different combos (like Missile combos).
If you genuinely, legitimately think what they showed of here looks like a WiiU game, I'd like you to tell me exactly which WiiU games you're playing, because nothing on that system looks anywhere close to as good as Prime 4. This is built on the same framework as Prime 1 Remastered, which looks absolutely stunning.
And just to play devil's advocate, even if it did somehow look like a WiiU game...who cares? Nintendo ALWAYS prioritizes superb art direction over pure visual fidelity, that is a huge part of how they've not just competed with, but dominated, Sony and MS in terms of hardware sold on system that are leagues behind their most direct competitors.
I swear, all you miserable, know-nothing arm chair critics are the worst, you people will complain about literally anything and nothing is ever good enough.
@SpaceboyScreams To begin with, it's not a hive mind. For example, I actually liked Federation Force and didn't see the problem with a spin-off, even of it didn't have an art style that I liked.
Second, as pointed out in my examples, it's not as simple as how you make it out to be. There's many elements that determine a game's success. Hell, those games that I mentioned practically did the opposite to what you are suggesting and are doing better than ever.
Third is that while Metroid has never been as big, it's also solid enough to be kept alive most of the time. Aside from the people's exaggerated negative reaction to stuff like Federation Force and Other M, it has been successful enough. Nothing's "Killing" it.
And last but not least, if anything has damaged the franchise, it's people that act negativity without enough information to even make a proper judgement or expecting something from the games that they aren't. That and a part of the fanbase that, while I can understand their frustration in receiving a spin off instead of a proper game like when FF came out, were still too close minded and noisy. Those two groups combined are what have hurt the franchise and unfortunately are noisy enough to scare people away.
I wasn't happy with MP5 so 4 is not on my 'to get' list.
And Nintendo is good at push backs.
@SpaceboyScreams Metroid/Prime never has and likely will never appeal to the masses in the way bigger Nintendo franchises like Mario or Zelda do and Nintendo know that. They’re not even trying to appeal to a wider crowd with this game by making it clear it’s the 4th game in the series in its title- it’s a game for the fans that they know they already have. I’m sure they’ll port the other 2 games to try and make 4 more inviting to people who never played them but I seriously doubt they expect it to sell ridiculously well- as long as it does well enough they’ll be fine.
The weight of expectation on this game is also unfair- it’s not exactly 7 years in the making. Restarted development after two years and the pandemic probably had a significant effect on its progress. Yes they announced it too early but they obviously didn’t expect the original development to go the way it did. It’s become some mythical thing that was never going to live up to what many expected of it. But even as I write that, I remind myself and you- we’ve barely seen anything of it. Let’s wait and see.
@Hyrulewarrior Bro, I've been reading your constant stream of attacks on this game and I find it extremely hilarious that you, a Nintendo fan, who is talking about a Nintendo game that's coming out on extremely dated hardware, is crapping all over this game for the graphics while somehow completely missing the irony of your thought process, nevermind the fact that it will probably run better than any other game at the showcase because Retro has a track record for being extremely good at optimization. Just wanted to point that out to someone who has a TotK pfp, which is a game that is also dated looking but can't even hit 30 fps consistently.
Keep the graphics talk on Push Square, because it most certainly doesn't belong here. You are practically baiting arguments with this crap.
“It looks like a WiiU game”? Is that guy high?
And yes this will be Metroid’s BotW moment. Will it be as successful? Unlikely, but if they really want this to do well, put a freaking online multiplayer deathmatch mode like Hunters had, something to get players more reason to keep playing.
Everyone needs to take a step back and realize that the only footage they showed was the prologue before you lose all your abilities. Of course the cold open is going to feel like more of the same! That is, at least until Samus has her abilities wiped and gets thrust into a new biome with a new arsenal to unlock. Samus always has the same old standard abilities at the beginning of every Prime game: basic missiles, basic charge beam, morph ball + bombs, etc. We have no idea what kind of new abilities and powerups will await us after the game begins properly, after the tutorial. For all we know, they could blend Other M / Dread melee combat with a new power-up, or shoot out portals, or add more third-person elements with her rocket boosters, or turn her into Iron Man. Who knows! But one thing I know for sure is that almost every Metroid game has tried to mix it up with Samus' arsenal. Prime 1 had very different abilities to Prime 2, and so forth for Prime 3. More likely than not, MP4Beyond will keep this in mind and give us a new toolset to play with after the power wipe.
Yes, it could just turn out to be different colored beams and missiles, the same grapple hook, etc. But Destiny, of all games, I think has demonstrated years of inspiration for all of the crazy FPS sci-fi powers a Metroid game could ever emulate.
Another game that is much closer to home that can offer lots of points of inspiration could be Metroid Prime Hunters. That game gave players lots of different powers between all of the different bounty hunters.
To be clear, Metroid prime was Zelda’s “ocarina of time,” not breath of the wild.
That being said, I’m totally fine with them staying true to what makes the prime games what they were.
Did you really expect the graphics to be jaw dropping on a 10 year old game?
Can we just be happy we’re finally getting it? Metroid games come out like… every 5-10 years if we’re lucky.
@Hyrulewarrior
botw is a wii u game...
After several games, the Zelda formula was getting too familiar (for some). So the BotW moment was needed. There’s only been 3 Prime games so I’m happy with more of the same for now. I’m sure they’ll add new things and surprise us with new mechanics etc when it’s released.
@Oracles_fanboi I’m allowed to state my opinion. And you have no right to shut me up on that. So just chill and we will see what the game looks like on release!
I don’t need a game that flips the series on its head.
Dread was more of the same for 2D Metroid and it was still good.
Odyssey is still much a 3D Mario game.
Uncharted 4 was still an uncharted game.
Nintendo tried something newish with Federation Force. Go play that.
The case could be made that open-world game design is somewhat antithetical to Metroid's brand of action-adventure gameplay, which is about progressively unlocking the game world - I'm not saying they cannot mix, but they are somewhat opposite concepts.
Does MP4 feel unambitious? Obsolete? Do 3D games have to go open-world? Maybe. But keep in mind that Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4's remakes received critical acclaim and had great sales not long ago. I must admit that I haven't played them, but those weren't open-world either, right? Despite being modernised, they were based on old games, and yet they were considered some of the best games of their respective years, no? Or perhaps it would be more accurate to compare MP4 to RE7 and Village, which were first-person games; I haven't played them either, but I understand that they were successful too, at least commercially? Also, 2D Metroidvanias have become increasingly popular in the last decade or so (to the point where maybe it's starting to get old, which... goes against what I'm trying to argue, but whatever); here is a 3D, first-person take on that type of game design philosophy - isn't that, in a way, kind of modern? Kind of relevant to today's gaming sensibilities? What I'm trying to say is that there still seems to be a place in the market for this sort of game.
Personally, I feel that past the initial excitement, yesterday's trailer was a bit underwhelming, but I'm looking forward to MP4. Should it have been more spectacular? Eh. Grandiose cutscenes are nice, but, ultimately, what I care about is the gameplay. Substance is more important than style. Would it have been better if it was open-world? I don't know. The idea is attractive, but I don't want every Nintendo game to be BotW, either...
Looking back at old information, I think this is interesting - back in 2015, Kensuke Tanabe said that one idea for the game was to have a time-shifting mechanic. It is compared to Echoes' gameplay. I don't know if they're still going with that, but it's worth considering (he also mentions that Sylux would appear and that they'd keep the numbering, and both things happened):
https://www.eurogamer.net/next-proper-metroid-prime-would-likely-now-be-on-nx
By the way, this article tries to justify the similarities between MP4 and Retro's previous Prime games by saying that it is a continuation of a cliffhanger. This is not accurate. Retro's original trilogy had a storyline about Phazon that ended very conclusively with MP3. That game had an unlockable video that hinted towards a new storyline, but that is all. Metroid Prime 1, 2, and 3 form a self-contained trilogy within a wider series. This is not the next chapter, it's the next book. Sorry if I sound overbearing, but I felt it was necessary to state the facts.
I recall Nintendo not making any mention about Twilight Princess launching for the Wii outside of it's initial GameCube development, and yet before release, it became official that it would be launching on the Wii as well. So just because they're not saying that Metroid Prime 4 at this moment is not going to be an initial release for the next system doesn't mean that things couldn't still change. The timing lines up too close, and it's very consistent with past history.
As far as expectations for Metroid Prime 4 being a radical departure from the previous games, other than a gimmick or two, the core gameplay of Metroid Prime is why people wanted more Metroid Prime in the first place. Personally I was done with the series after 3 and was not looking forward to a fourth entry, but it exists, it's going to be released, and thankfully it will continue the gameplay that I know and love. Other than a beautiful lick of HD paint, there's not much else I'm expecting. Just another fun Prime game.
Have a feeling the sentiment of "I expected more" has more to do with Nintendo's far too early announcement of MP4 and then subsequent tumultuous development cycle and wait time since. The wait time from announcement to release is what has people expecting a huge upgrade/overhaul or something. Had they not announced Metroid Prime 4 in 2017... then dropped this trailer now (7 years later!), I think that reaction would be much much different as people would just be happy that the series is back and still alive.
Having said that, I love Metroid Prime so I'm amped for Prime 4 even if it does turn out to be just more of the same. That same has been awesome thus far. And also, by golly gosh it was just the first trailer! Way too early to be this judgemental imo, but so goes the innanets.
Metroid/Metroid Prime does NOT need to have a Breath of the Wild moment yet. This franchise doesn't receive a ton of games to where it would cause player fatigue from its traditional conventions like Zelda, Kirby, Fire Emblem, Mario and especially POKEMON.
Just innovating for the sake of innovating is how you end up with games that all try to be open world sandboxes or that lose it's identity. (See the fan divisiveness of the Paper Mario Series)
people is always looking for the wow factor in every trailer on every game. I mean, It's Metroid Prime, obviously is going to be a good game, even federation Force was a good game despite the chibi graphics. MP4 looks impressive for a Metroid Prime game, the graphical Leap is evident and I trust Nintendo and obviously Retro Studios work. And I'm not gonna judge an entire game that remains a mistery with a couple of minutes of gameplay. that would be stupid.
Funny words because the "BotW moment" is the worst thing that has happened to The Legend of Zelda according to many fans like myself.
I've been staying away from Metroid discussions.
I really enjoyed Prime on the GCN.
I've played Metroid, Metroid 2 and Super Metroid a bunch of times.
Hated Prime 2
Loved Hunters and Federation Force
Didn't play the Wii installment
Got the HD of prime
Played the GBA one a bunch
Didn't get Dread...yet
Missed out on Samus Returns ...
All that said ...
When watching the reveal I felt like it was a massive graphical decline from the original GCN Prime!
Now!
That could just be the crappy encoding/compression YouTube uses...
We'll see.
@Banjo-
Agree!
Breath and Tears sucks!
Oh, and the "breath of the Wild" moment happened decades? ago!
It was when Prime on the GCN was revealed!
@Spider-Kev Metroid Prime was an optimal 3D translation of Metroid, just like Ocarina of Time of The Legend of Zelda. 😊
@Arminillo Indeed. BotW is a Wii U game that was delayed one year to make the Switch port, confirmed by Nintendo. I also found that comment weird because not just it's a Wii U game, but Switch is not much more powerful than Wii U, just different mobile technology that was already dated at launch.
eh Botw wasn't worth all the hype to be honest, so we'll see...
@B_Lindz My Sentimonies Exactly
@Hyrulewarrior Name a Switch Game that doesn't look like a WiiU Game. I didn't even buy a switch until 2020 because prior to that most of the "Best games on Switch" lists were 80% WiiU ports of games that I already owned
@emayekayee All I did was I mentioned it looked like a Wii U game ok? I’m allowed to share my opinion so stop getting triggered over a video game. Yes many switch games look like Wii U games I’m just disappointed they didn’t wait to make it a switch 2 game, but only time will tell
Shortly after releasing Breath of the Wild and looking to restart development, it sounds like it was the perfect moment for them to stop being so continuist.
@Spider-Kev what sucks about them? I’d love to know why you think GOTY 2017 and a game that won best action adventure game last year actually suck?
@SillyG I don't care if the game has OG Doom textures if it runs/plays well.
@Spider-Kev Not really. That was it's OoT moment. As in several people at the time were doubtful that Metroid would work as an fps. I remember specifically, an editor at EGM making a bet that the original Prime would not score over an 8 in their publication. Then the game dropped, and people were saying that it was like the best game from a decade in the future. I understand that Prime represents a paradigm shift for Metroid, but I think another one is in order to really call it a BotW moment.
Not gonna lie, i was expecting more on the graphics department, 7 years in the oven, top tier developers hired and this is the best they could come up with?
However, gameplay rules above all so I will wait till' i have gameplay information, Metroid is yet to disappoint me (and I'll doubt this is going to be the 1st time)
Yeah, I'm not touching this. The gameplay looks way too old, it just looks like a worse Halo. Metroid Prime hasn't aged well. Even though I loved them when they released, they are boring these days.
This is a stupid article. Of course Prime 4 is going to be a Prime game and not anything drastically different. Its not a new series. Secondly, Prime was Metroid’s BotW moment. Third - This is WAY TOO early to have this discussion. We hardly know anything about the game, there can be a lot of new gameplay evolutions here. The first time Nintendo shows its major games, a year + from release, they often don’t show off the new mechanics. They unveil those closer to launch.
@glennthefrog yeah, I think that is what I am saying - since Metroid Prime was the name of the villain (SPOILERS) who became Dark Samus, then if that storyline is now over then so is the Metroid Prime character. Massively minor point of course and I will be getting the gsme whatever, unless it is an unlikely disaster
Reading some of the comments here, don't forget that the game is still probably a year off and that year may well be spent in all kinds of tinkering and improvements.
I was very surprised by the similarity of the gameplay to the earlier games. You might say it's identical. Here's my theory: Bandai Namco tried to make something different, maybe innovative. Nintendo came around a couple of years later and was like "yeah no". And that's why they restarted from scratch: to make the same game they have before. And I think it was a mistake. I've played it three times. What's the point?
@BanjoPickles I love it even more when they completely misuse the word “we” when they mean "I". I’m glad I don’t know people like this in real life. There’s people falling to pieces over the new Zelda game at the mo…it’s just a game. 😂
@Gryffin Because it’s a direct sequel? Of course it’s going to play like the other games. Why it’s surprising to anyone that they’re sticking to the template (which Prime Remastered proved still holds up incredibly well today) is beyond me.
And again- what are we doing here? Why are we judging the entire game on a minute of gameplay all set in the same area? Whatever new ideas they’re exploring aren’t going to be shown right off the bat. If you need to see more before getting excited then fine, but wait until we actually see more before deciding that they aren’t doing anything to push the series forwards.
@Friendly Not being funny, but the fact Nintendo are showing us MP4 footage this far out should already have our alarm bells going off!
You are right of course... we should wait. We will see more.
I have a feeling though. They are trying to manage our expectations... but I think that ship sailed a good few years ago now.
How many June's have their been where everyone has been "oohhh we could get MP4 news!!1!"
Now it's here... I have concerns!
Also, not you, but another comment mentioned how Dread was more of the same but that was awesome. It's a good point - my concern is that Dread arrived on the scene within a big gap since the last Metroid game. MP4 is following not only Dread but also Prime Remaster.
Seems to me that MP4 has had a long series of missteps from Nintendo. Changing devs. Delays. Announced too early. Prime Remaster timing.
I do accept though - we need to wait and see. I just don't think we can legitimately dismiss people's concerns. I think it's fair to be disappointed thus far.
And final point from me. We shouldn't underestimate the pressure on Retro Studios. People are annoyed they haven't released a new game in ten years. People are annoyed a new DK game has clearly been sacrificed. People are annoyed Retro clearly had a project cancelled too - between 2014 and 2019 what did they do exactly? So yes. Show us something underwhelming after all this time and the pitchforks will obviously be out...!
Graphics don’t matter. I loved how the first game looked back then and am still imprrssed by it. Graphics look better here. But the design looks a bit worse. However, I haven’t been this hyped for a game in many years! I want every detail I can get. The run up to this game will be so fun
@EVIL-C OK fair point. Idea 1: I'd have space exploration in Samus' ship.
Absolutely not "no man's sky". I'm thinking more... Metroid mixed with some Star Fox.
@SpaceboyScreams "none have broken 3 million except Dread" is a really weird way to say "one has broken 3 million"
I'm one of those who's not excited by this, but that's because I'd rather play a new 2D Metroid game (done with the Metroid Dread engine). Prime series has never impressed me, there's not enough to set it apart from any other generic fps game.
@nocdaes I’m very positive Nintendo is keeping the surprises under wraps, because Metroid Prime 4 could be thé showcase of Nintendo for what the next system is capable of. Next to a new 3D Mario/Donkey Kong game and specifically aimed at the more hardcore gamer.
We’ll see!
@atv79 i have to disagree here. Where other fps are mainly action orientated, Metroid Prime is more of an fps/adventure game. And i think there are almost no other games in that genre. Maybe Bioshock a bit? But very unique.
It’s also the reason I’m looking forward to Indiana Jones, because that could be another one that fits in that genre.
@WiltonRoots
Absolutely! Honestly, I think that everything we get now is a bonus! How many other seven-plus year old consoles still receive meaningful support? Was PS2 getting big games in 2007/2008? DS? 3DS? PS1? NES? By 1998, SNES had both feet in the grave. Wii, in 2013, was getting yearly iterations of Just Dance and that’s it.
In its seventh year, Switch has received/will receive:
-an interesting looking Zelda spinoff
-a super Mario rpg remake
-a Luigi’s Mansion 2 hd rerelease
-the Princess Peach game
-a new Mario Party
-a Dragon Quest III remake
-Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
We are also still receiving some pretty amazing indie games on the eshop, and expansions for the NSO service. As a fan of Nintendo since 1986, I’d be lying if I said that this wasn’t the best supported console Nintendo has ever released! If anybody wants to dispute that, I invite them to prove me wrong.
For Prime 4, being in the Prime series, this is understandable. But would like to see, someday, a 3D non-Prime Metroid game to the tune of No Man's Sky. That would be my idea of a BOTW moment.
@nocdaes I would also like to recommend this indepth analysis: https://youtu.be/-lPNZNG89vw?si=0a61TUdJ_aIHg2yZ
This trailer shows that the Metroid Prime 4 trailer already shows a distinguish from MP Remastered.
@BlublacMH
MP4 is not necessarily better than MP1, even though I think it really should be after the wait.
@theGamerPad
Prime 1 was not the series BotW moment. It was the OOT moment as the first 3d game in the series.
Prime 1 was released in 2002, more than a decade before BotW. It's not an open world, "do what you want" kind of game. The "BotW moment" of the series is still in the future if MP4 doesn't surprise us.
Halo 4-5, Uncharted 4, Gears 4/5, Pikmin 4....
You're right that they weren't groundbreaking to their franchises like BoTW was. What they DID were, though, were bigger, more expansive, technologically advanced iterations of them. Visually at least, MP4 is coping with that, though I still need to see more.
I don't want this game to be revolutionary to the point of not being Metroid Prime, what I want for it is to use the technology, horsepower and development time it has to create new gameplay opportunities, expansive worlds (open areas at least), a more immersive narrative, it has the chance to be Nintendo's western-developed masterpiece, to remind everybody what the new and bigger Retro Studios is truly capable of.
I think Nintendo intentionally made the first trailer look as familiar as possible so that we players can understand that this is indeed Metroid Prime at base. Who knows, then, what they will show after (hopefully we get a Metroid Direct someday!)
@BanjoPickles Thanks for replying, hope all is well with you. Haven’t communicated with you for ages. Best wishes to the family. 👍🏻
@N8tiveT3ch,

Nintendo fans not being happy with their food? Does this surprise A SINGLE PERSON?
