You would be forgiven for having a bad feeling about Star Wars: Hunters. This free-to-play, class-based, hero shooter was announced by FarmVille developer Zynga in 2021, but a duo of delays and its appearance in the already stacked genre of 'Overwatch-likes' hardly served as a ringing endorsement for the latest event from a galaxy far, far away.
But after all of that waiting, the shooter has finally arrived (as a console exclusive to Switch, no less, at least for now) and it's really rather good. Sure, those who have sampled Overwatch's class-based stylings might find nothing particularly new here, but at launch Hunters is a fast and fun take on the PvP formula that might even serve as a fitting trial for any Padawans of the genre.
So, what's it all about? Star Wars: Hunters is a third-person, class-based shooter. You play as a Hunter from one of three ability types (Damage, Tank, or Support) and team up with another three players online to take on an opposing team across four different game modes. The class balance is the key to victory, with each character bringing a unique skillset to benefit the team and hand out the wins.
If it sounds like something that you've seen several times before, that's because it is. Hunters doesn't necessarily bring anything new to the squad-based table but as the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't Babu Friks it."
The thing that sets Hunters apart, naturally, is Star Wars. Lightsabers, blasters, and Wookies are all present and correct here, and each arena invokes iconic locations from Endor to the Death Star that are sure to appeal to the Force-sensitive out there. But a high midi-chlorian count isn't necessary to find enjoyment. Set on the all-new Outer Rim planet of Vespaara and featuring all-new characters, there is no pre-reading required to properly understand what's going on. This is a galaxy in which fans and newbies are welcome, with no barrier to entry.
Originality in Star Wars has, admittedly, often proved to be a mixed bag, but the characters are a joy to behold in Hunters. From a droid that thinks it's a Jedi, to two Jawas standing on top of each other in a trench coat (yes, really), there is a level of silliness to the designs that other video game entries so often overlook. What's more, each feels distinct enough that no one Hunter stands apart as 'the best.' Every option from attack-first Damage characters to healing Supports has its role and, as long as you stick to it, never feels unfairly balanced.
Learning these roles is the difference between winning and losing — dashing headfirst into enemy fire as Rodian medic Skora isn't going to help anyone, but supporting your Tank units to do the same will benefit the whole team — and Hunters does a good job of ensuring that you sample all approaches. It's a first-come, first-served approach in the character selection menu before a match, so you'll regularly have to switch up your tactics if your preferred Hunter has already been taken, and Quests and Events focus on each individual Hunter, encouraging you to try them all out to reap the maximum rewards.
But once we hit rewards, things get a little poodoo. A Battle Pass-like addition to the free-to-play structure is no surprise these days, though we felt that perhaps a little too much is locked behind the paywall at launch. Aside from the usual character skins, emotes, and weapon wraps, Hunters' 'Arena Pass' also includes exclusive access to an additional fighter, Mandalorian Aran Tal, who is unselectable for those unwilling to pay. There's every chance that this pay-to-play Hunter will become freely available once the first Arena Pass season is up, but keeping that character's tactical approaches only for those who cough up the dough feels a little icky.
Fortunately, there is an advantage to putting in the work in Hunters. Each character can be upgraded with 'Hunter Fame,' granting them rewards including ability improvements and cosmetics. You gain Fame simply by playing with each Hunter, so while paid advantages do exist, the focus remains on play-to-win.
Matches themselves are relatively short, most lasting around the five-minute mark, and while the game mode variety doesn't exactly make each match-up feel completely different, there is enough of an objective change between each to ensure that the grind is never tiresome. These modes will be familiar to those with experience in the genre — death match, zone control, and capture the flag are replicated in 'Squad Brawl,' 'Dynamic Control' and 'Trophy Chase' respectively — though their auto-rotating structure provides another opportunity to try different Hunter approaches for different objectives.
Finding each of these modes can be a bit of a headache, with frustratingly fiddly home menus and a not-so-obvious highlight icon making navigating through upgrades, rewards, and game selection a trial of its own. However, things are much clearer in-game. The clutter-free HUD means that your attention is always on the action. The controls are responsive and the optional gyro setting for motion aiming is a welcome addition, particularly for those who have reaped its benefits in the likes of Splatoon and Tears of the Kingdom.
It all feels pleasantly designed for Switch (and mobile) and this carries through into the visuals. Unlike Fortnite, Overwatch, or other online shooters ported to Switch where the promise of sparkling HD feels just out of reach, Hunters' visuals work in their simplicity. We were never distracted by textures glaringly loading in the background, nor lost for words at something's detailed beauty. It's a mobile-first Switch game, but come with the right frame of mind and you will be sufficiently whelmed.
Performance, too, has been a pleasant surprise in most matches. Things seem to run at a consistent 30fps in almost every game we have played with minimal 'matchmaking' wait times and loading screens, meaning that it's quick and easy to slip into that 'just one more win' feeling.
Conclusion
Star Wars: Hunters might not bring anything particularly new to the ever-increasing field of class-based shooters, but there's a lot of fun to be had here. If you can look past the fiddly menus and 'Arena Pass' trappings that have haunted so many in the genre, Hunters offers a level of tactical PvP gameplay that is simple to grasp and entertaining enough to warrant mastering. Best of all, it feels right at home on Switch. There's certainly room for improvement but, like ol' Shiv Palpatine, we will watch its career with great interest.

Do not believe their lies
Happy to hear it's overall great apart from the expected free-to-play stuff and the home menus for those interested in playing it regularly, as for me I'll give it a try it if my friends are also up to it and in case we like it we might occasionally play it together!
With IGN now owning most gaming media (including NL), certain biases for reviews are going to show a little more often. This game is getting mid reviews on reddit forums. A 6.5 is probably a more accurate score.
I once made the mistake of playing a F2P Star Wars game "Galaxy of Heroes". Never again! Just because I'm a big Star Wars fans, doesn't mean all the games are meant for me. This one is still a hard pass. I'd rather play a new Battlefront or a good RPG based on the franchise.
@Axecon This site along with PS and PX still operate independently. IGN has no influence on editorial content.
Played some yesterday, definitely a little basic, but way more fun than I was expecting - which is great because I don’t anticipate much multiplayer-wise on the switch over the coming months.
Thanks for the review. I had loaded this onto the Switch for my son, but I may give it a try myself now that I know it's not garbage.
@Axecon IGN doesn't own us.
And wut?
Watch out, the in game purchases were malfunctioning when I used it yesterday. I purchased one of the starter packs for a few dollars and despite Nintendo taking my money, the in game menu said it got cancelled. I had to download it on Android to complete the purchase.
You'd thought Zynga would have tested out its main way of making money before launch.
@Axecon Wth is an "accurate score" in game reviews? They're all subject to opinion, these aren't hard-coded figures 🤔 This meta critic mentality seems exhausting.
Nintendolife are game enthusiasts, for more then 10 years they are my reliable source for the most fun games.
So, thank you for the review, can't wait to try it out!
@dartmonkey IGN recently bought the parent company of NL
I have really been enjoying it so far, once you unlock the other modes it gets loads better. I think the battle pass is a little spicy in price. Charging more than Fortnite's price is odd.
May the force be with you.
IS THAT ITCHY!?!???
Looks fun, and since it has gyro aiming then there's no harm in picking it up! I'll be trying this out in a bit!
wow High score
@Axecon Perhaps. But NL almost always scores exclusive Nintendo platform games much higher than average ratings. This is nothing new. Very rare to see scores below 8.
@Axecon utter nonsense.
IGN doesn't operate those other sites. Their parent company owns them
Sorry but I have a hard time trusting this score or finding this review useful.
No kidding, huh? Well, shoot. I'll have to check this out. That is a very unexpected 8/10. Well done, Zynga!
@Axecon The internet is an echo chamber of cynics and bitter people that think that saying "looks like a mobile game" is deep thinking and a great observation. They also hate free to play practices and on top of that, hate most new stuff about Star Wars. While there's valid criticism in some of that, most of the times it's just them talking nonsense about stuff that they don't know anything about.
Personally I played the game and it's really fun, the connection is stable, it has a nice artistic direction, music is nice and the controls are easy. It's an easy recommendation for anyone that likes star wars and competitive games and isn't that kind of special fellows that end up spending their needed money on skins, which only requires basic self control.
@NinjaLuigi Don’t make me start dropping links to show that’s simply not true!
@JayJ Why?
Hero shooter is a hard pass for me.
This review doesn't read like a 8/10 either, maybe a 7/10 given NL is generally more lenient than other outlets and their sister sites like Push Square. Particularly these passages:
" it sounds like something that you've seen several times before, that's because it is. Hunters doesn't necessarily bring anything new to the squad-based table but as the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't Babu Friks it.""
"It's a mobile-first Switch game, but come with the right frame of mind and you will be sufficiently whelmed."
So a F2P game in an overcrowded genre whose only selling point seems to be the license. It's not exceptional compared to its peers in gameplay or technical performance but if you specifically felt lightsabers and Jawas were missing from hero shooters it would scratch that itch.
I don't think the reviewer, or NL is paid off or whatever but it just screams mediocrity from the gameplay videos to the tone of other reviews I've read. And then add to that hero shooters and F2P are essentially, imo, slop for casual gamers these days that don't do anything interesting for me. Score seems like it was graded on a bit of a curve.
I rate this review 8/10 too much water.
@dartmonkey you may still be "independent" but in the end it's IGN who pays the salaries. Which could give them control in the end. And I've seen a lot of websites being bought with the promise of "operating independently" or "nothing will change" and 1-2 years later having copy-pasted articles from other sites owned by those companies. From news articles to reviews. With lowered quality, more ads and/or subscriptions, less privacy, etc. In the end it's the user, those who built the communities, who lose.
You can't be independent and be owned by one of the biggest corporations in gaming news at the same time. It doesn't work like that.
@sanderev Hookshot pays the salaries. Ziff Davis bought Gamer Network and its sites. Hookshot is partnered with Gamer Network (for ad sales), but operates independently. We’re not owned by Ziff Davis.
why is there so much arguing over this website's reviews?
@Pillowpants I'd love a new Battlefront, but given what happened with 1+2 ports, I would rather play this for free than that for cash!
@beltmenot I am wondering the same thing! And trying to stay out of it!
I see through the lies of the developer!
Interesting. I had heard of this game, but I had no idea it was a hero shooter. I've zero knowledge of Star Wars outside of "light saber goes swissszhhhh" and Darth Vader's infamous, asthmatic " im ur daddy Luke" line, but this looks like it could be some fun. Third Person is also a plus for me - maybe I can get my "what's a chewbaka" brother's to play this with me. Thanks for the review.
I've known about this game for about a year, or two. I pre-downloaded it last month, and couldn't play it yet. I'm going to give it a go later today.
It’s too bad there isn’t like a horde mode like the Gears of Wars series has. I’m terrible at playing against other people, that’s why I refuse to play titles like this.
“Drop it like it’s Hoth”? 🤦♂️
That was a painful smirk you evoked from me.
As somehow who found Overwatch dreadfully slow and honestly pretty boring (in a perfect world, the significantly more fun Battleborn would have been the game that kept going), how does the speed of this one compare?
@Axecon Reddit forums... You can't be serious.
@beltmenot because people hate fun on online gaming forums, especially this one for some reason
Removed - unconstructive feedback
Cool. Not a fan of Star Bores but I'll give it a shot. Hero based shooters like Overwatch are great, been a fan since Team Fortress Classic.
Can't beat the price of free either.
@BTB20 Hey, leave them alone. Some people are only comfortable having opinions if they're the exact same opinions they're told they should have as everyone else around them (mostly because the jannies ban any differing views there). Reddit great for digging yourself into an echo chamber of false narrative and never leave!
Played this for about an hour and it all felt like something I've played before but definitely not in a good way. Just another live services team shooter with nothing unique to it, especially not after 2-3 bot filled hype games to make you feel like a winner the game immediately starts asking for cash and in no small amounts either. It was after a pop up that asked for ten euro for a pack when I tried to click on a menu option that I was done with this and opted out early. Don't waste your time/money or energy on this, it's another game that wants to become your full time job but one that demands money while you work on slight recolours of the base graphics.
I found the game rather dull and the controls were very clunky. I also played it on mobile and had the same experience. There's really nothing to write home about with this game especially since other F2P games like Overwatch, Apex Legends, Rocket league, and Fortnite exist on Switch. Definitely not an 8 I'd would say more like 4 or a 5, personally.
I gave it a chance. It's not a total flop, but the resolution is low and it can't hold 30 fps. Plus completely infested with classic "free 2 play" mechanics. Don't waste your time with it and play something worthy. By the way, how can you say a day after release that it's balanced? And why are all the screenshots from the beginning of the game with bots? Post a screen with your progress. I don't think you got very far.
@dartmonkey https://www.ign.com/articles/ign-entertainment-acquires-eurogamer-gi-vg247-rock-paper-shotgun-and-more . And leave corrections to the moderators.
Honestly, this game feels a bit mid but still a guilty pleasure for those long road trips.
@roy130390 For real the game is enjoyable? Ngl it just never looked like it was gonna be but honestly if you enjoyed it it wouldn’t hurt to give it a shot since it’s free anyway, I love to be wrong about these kind of things anyway.
Yet another PvP game...no thanks.
@beltmenot Russian bots are deployed all over the internet to spark heated debates and arguing so Americans fight over everything, not just politics.
So what younare seeing are started by bots, ignore them.
@Zaruboggan
I need to know who your dealer is if you found Overwatch to be slow.
@BLD Gearbox Software
Why is there so much arguing here???
Reddit-tier jokes in the title made me cringe. Hard.
Score is overblown. Game is mediocre at best. Not because it's free or has mobile roots.
Played it on my iPad with a controller. Not a bad game. Fun to play with my kids but not something I will probably dive into much by myself. That being said, I give your "If it ain't broke, don't Babu Friks it." line a 4 out of 10 😂
I've learned that I can't trust reviews of anything ftp or with egregious mtx. It's always glossed over as a tiny thing or like it's granted. Maybe I'm just more sensitive to them than others.
Wow that reviewed better than I thought it would. I won't be playing it, but I'm happy for the Star Wars fans.
Just spent a couple hours with it. Taking into account the type of game it is, I would give it a 7. Controls really well, different classes are fun, and it runs good on Switch. The menus are atrocious; really feels like a constant bombardment of "upgrade this with $$$," but that's to be expected. For a free game it's not too shabby; especially if you just want to roll a few quick rounds.
Nah, i'm gonna pass
@Snatcher Hi mate! Yup, it's pretty enjoyable. I'm not the biggest fan of hero shooters but I played my share of Paladins and Overwatch and honestly I have been enjoying this game much more so far. On top of that, it's working quite well on Switch so I'd say that it definitely deserves an opportunity. I'm using Aran Tal (the mandalorian character) and had to pay the season pass dor that but as far as I know it will be available for free after a couple months and the other characters that I tried were as fun and probably even better competitively. I usually just like a couple characters but here I have enjoyed almost everyone that I tried. I just paid for that one to support the game and because I'm a huge fan of mandalorians haha.
@charlesmaso23 Believe it or not, I have read that.
Another toxic nl comment section? Shocking
I wasn't aware this was a game until saw the review. I downloaded it last night to try it out. It surprised me, I was having a good time and had that just one more game feeling. I'll keep playing it. The games were rather short which for me is great for a pick up and play for a few minutes. I hope it comes to other platforms.
I don't like that the game icon just says STAR WARS 😑
I can play Rocket League all day and the non-free stuff is just sitting there in lists and menus which I don't even have to look at. It's great! The closest I ever come to purchasing anything is when I see someone in-game rocking some especially cool cosmetic. That's the way you get people to feel comfortable in this space you've created, and open to thoughts of investing their cash into it. Pop up ads would nope me out of there very very quickly.
As a grown-up person who is a very casual player for multiplayer shooters, I can only say that's it's surprisingly good so far. Sure, it's barebones, but complicated is not automatically better. You can literarilly pick this one up and play. It also runs really well on Switch. I didn't hit any paywalls yet, as I'm not really interested in playing as a specific character despite being a huge SW fan. I mean, there's no Luke, Vader, Obi-Wan or other Canon characters anyway. The progression itself doesn't seem to be obstructed, you can play and upgrade your available characters fairly, which definitely is a good thing. Might be an 8 actually, I've been playing it for first 2 days without losing interest, which is a rather rare case for me as far as multiplayer arena-based shooters go.
@dartmonkey It owns a big share of your parent company, and that "family" of companies, include Digital Foundry, and your other sister sites, like Time Extension. So, they do own you.
I played during the early hours of the day, and it's very addictive and fun to play. Very easy and quick matches, you unlock things fast, and all the characters are well balanced, although, the character list is full of "inclusion", if you know what I mean. Neverless, this is a fun game to play, I think if you like Splatoon quick matchmaking, this is the game for you!
I just finished playing a few rounds of it, and I found it to be quite satisfying. Each character I've played thus far feels pretty good in their own way, and the F2P stuff is just cosmetic. I do like that your characters get a little bit stronger after you play them enough. It's not game breaking, but they add up. The menus are a bit of mess though, and the transitions between matches could use more polish. Still, it was fun.
I have played it for 10 hours, would give it a 8/10.
Giving this filth anything higher than a 4 is downright absurd. This isn't a "game". It is a micro-transaction hellscape with a barely passable "game" attached to it. It is corporate exploitation and manipulation at its worst. It doesn't matter if it "plays well", because that isn't its purpose. Stop supporting this kind of trash.
