Crossovers happen all the time in games, films, TV shows and just about every other form of media out there, but none of them can really be compared to Super Smash Bros.; no, not even that film that you’re thinking of. So it’s beyond a bold move to name the latest entry in a series ‘Ultimate’, thus raising expectations to dizzying levels, so can Super Smash Bros. Ultimate really live up to its name? That’s what we’re here to discuss, because this is a review of it.
The core idea of Smash hasn’t changed at all really; you’re still setting up characters from the world of Nintendo (and from other developers, too) to beat the living snot out of each other until one of them is so badly damaged or poorly controlled that they fly or fall out of the intangible boundaries that Sakurai and his team have imposed upon one of the 104 included stages. Special moves, items, supremely fanatical hardcore community – it’s all largely the same as it was. It’s chaotic, high-octane and an incredibly replayable lump of fun. However the devil, appropriately, is in the detail.
The most notable inclusion here is the new Adventure Mode dubbed World of Light, and by extension the new Spirits mechanic. A strange entity known as Galeem is systematically destroying the world in which all the fighter characters reside, and picks them off one by one in order to create a newer, more perfect world; a World of Light. Being the director’s personal baby, the pink and orb-like Kirby is the only one left unaffected, and in a mysterious pop of colourful stars is transported to a strange new land living in the shadow of the supposedly evil Galeem – or at least the shadow it would have if it wasn’t kicking out its own light like a sun.
You traverse the land through paths on a beautiful watercolour backdrop battling the souls of other characters that aren’t necessarily fighters – such as Joan the turnip seller from Animal Crossing – that have inhabited empty copies of Mario, Link, King Dedede and the rest of the whopping 74 characters you can play as. They’re not without their own perks though, and each Spirit brings with it one or two things that mix up the way a fight plays out. For example, they might be giant, tiny, like to taunt constantly, or even favour one specific move above all others to name just a handful. The stages can also be affected by things such as electric floors, strong winds and reduced gravity.
The variety in these fights is staggering, and practically all of them are insanely good fun and a novel way to breathe additional life into battles without having to code and create 1,297 unique fighters – yep, that’s the total number of Spirits in the game at the time of writing, with more being added in the future. Not every battle is an absolute winner however, and some even spell it out for you in the fight description, simply calling it a 'no-frills' battle. This is a slight disappointment, but these truly are extremely few and far between, and given the colossal scale that the team were working with, we can happily accept that not every one of over a thousand Spirit encounters can be as memorable as others.
But once you’ve battled a Spirit, things don't end there. You’ll acquire each Spirit you defeat in World of Light and the more straightforward Spirit Board, which is essentially a randomised rotating gallery of Spirits you can choose to battle without delving into World of Light. You can assign one primary Spirit and up to three support Spirits to help boost your fighter’s power and make the often one-sided battles in World of Light much more equal. You can freely overpower yourself making many contests a complete breeze, but this will result in fewer bonuses for your trouble – and if you intentionally underpower yourself, you’ll be raking in rewards like nobody’s business. It’s a system that essentially self-regulates itself, and the addition of a Skill Tree that boosts your power as well as pre-determined difficulty levels provides a staggering amount of flexibility in how you approach this particular mode.
The world itself is also absolutely massive, and what you initially see isn’t all you get, as there are a good number of hidden areas that house extra lovely stuff. Throughout it all you’ll be unlocking new fighters to play as, new Spirits to assign and beating seven shades out of special boss fights that we don’t want to spoil, but can confirm are absolutely fantastic, and manage to outdo even the finest bosses from Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s Subspace Emissary.
Other single-player offerings include the appropriately-named Classic Mode, which has had a bit of a re-think and is all the better for it. Now each fighter has their own string of fights to best one after another, all fitting within a named theme. R.O.B., for example, tackles all the most human-looking players in a manner that feels worryingly like a robotic overthrow of humanity, Young Link smashes his way through Hyrule’s elite, and Sonic is forced to tackle numerous references to his past, including the meme-worthy battle of a blue, yellow, and red Kirby team set to the main theme from Sonic Heroes. It’s not a revolutionary way to handle Classic Mode, but it’s absolutely the most fun we’ve had with the mode in the series’ history, and it manages to inject a real charm and self-awareness that has been distinctly lacking in previous entries.
There’s also a plethora of other things to do, such as listening to the phenomenal soundtrack and watching replays of past matches (which can now also be encoded into a video file to prevent future updates from breaking them), but the real meat of the experience – and no doubt what so many of you are here specifically to read about – is the multiplayer.
As previously stated, the bulk of the experience is the same as it’s always been in Smash, which is to be expected, but the number of small tweaks and subtle changes that permeate the game are practically innumerable. Whilst someone unfamiliar with the series might see little to differentiate Ultimate from the previous entries on 3DS and Wii U, if you’ve played the previous games an unhealthy amount like we have, the feel of how it all works has been drastically ramped up and re-worked to a spectacular degree.
We’re not going to go into major specifics about landing lag and active frames, but we’ll give you the broad strokes. The game feels faster, more responsive and tighter than before, although perhaps not as fast and unpredictable as Melee. Character movesets have been upgraded and nerfed in a manner that feels very balanced, although the real proof of this will naturally be once the game is out in the wild and people are playing each other all over the world.
New modes such as Squad Strike – which allows a 3v3 or 5v5 mini tournament – and Special Smash help to mix things up nicely, but the real star of the show is the new Tournament system. It’s nothing out of this world as far as tournament systems go, but everything about it is robust, reliable and extremely flexible. If you plan on having or partaking in a tournament, you’d be mad not to use this mode.
But the flexibility doesn’t stop there either, you can now change more settings and rules than ever before, and what’s even more wonderful is these can all be saved as custom rulesets, allowing you to quickly set up the exact game you want without having to go through and change each little setting every time. You can even go into the main settings menu and adjust an individual fighter character (not player) to have more or less power depending on how you feel the balance lies. Naturally, this is open to abuse, but you have the option to actively nerf or buff characters without the need of an officially-mandated patch. This is probably the feature that best sums up Ultimate; insane levels of customisation and flexibility. You’re encouraged to play the game however you want to, and adjust even the most trivial features to your heart’s content. You can even turn off Tap Jump as standard, which is basically the best thing we could ever have hoped for.
Few totally new fighters that have been introduced here, but considering the fact that every single fighter from all the previous games has returned, we can’t say we’re at all disappointed. Every newcomer feels unique and ambitious, but without verging into Brawl-levels of experimentation. With 74 characters to play as and a starting roster of only 8, you might be forgiven for thinking that you’re going to be spending half your life unlocking them, but that’s not the case. The game is quite generous with how frequently you unlock new fighters, but not so generous that it fails to be an exciting event.
How about looks? Looks-wise, the game is frankly gorgeous, as no doubt you’ve seen in the countless videos that Nintendo itself has already published. But none of this would be worth it if the game didn’t run well, but as you might expect for a first party game with such a prestigious pedigree, it all runs smoother than liquid butter. Try as we might, we couldn’t get the game to slow down at all, or show any signs of struggling. The music is also utterly fantastic, boasting some storming arrangments of classic tunes from the past few decades of video game history. While we're on the topic of general presentation, this game is so polished you can almost see your face in it.
Online is a bit of a minefield for games like Smash that demand precision timing and the lowest latency possible, but thanks to what we can only assume is some sort of cosmic magic, Ultimate plays really well online. You’ll occasionally run into a game with someone whose connection with yours just doesn’t amount to a hill of beans, and latency does become noticeable, but a strong majority of the time it’s so responsive (potentially thanks to the system’s preference for nearby players) that for the average player it’s feels practically as responsive as playing a local game with a wireless controller.
Conclusion
So how does it all stack up? Vocal concerns about past games have been actively addressed, every single fighter from the series is present (even Pichu), the customisability is overwhelmingly vast and it’s all topped off with super-solid single-player modes to boot. We’re not sure how you could make a more robust or pleasing Smash game. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate truly is the ultimate instalment in the series, and it makes you wonder where Sakurai can possibly take this franchise next.

Wait... wut?
-dawn of the final day-
less than 24 hours remain...
So... 10/10 but score withheld?
The review is full of praise so why not just say 10?
The game of the year. Simply as that like a long awaiting friend. Ahhhhhh, looking so much forward to it. Can't wait.
Online play means nothing to me, and I can't wait for this game
Colours weave into a spire of flameee
Distant sparks call to a past still unnameddd
Bear this torch against the cold of the nighttt
Search your soul and reawaken the undying lighttttt
God I need this game
@MagnaRoader Because if they say 10 already a small bunch of troll gonna complaint as always. In truth, the non say rule say wait for the release to put a review.
I can only usually play Smash Bros. in relatively small sessions before getting a bit bored but I'm really looking forward to getting my copy later. The single player content looks really fun this time around.
But can you play as the witch from Vroom in the Night Sky?
I am alone in not caring at all about online?
Online can change a lot over time. I'm not sure what will be gained by reviewing online over the opening weekend.
Oh boy Friday can't come any sooner.
I just got so hyped...wait I’m supposed to work now? 😋
Online is a though one here... IMO it should not get a 10 if based on online, it's requiring people to get an adapter as wifi is not enough, that to me is not a 10 on today's internet era... then again, I don't care about online for smash so if we remove it a 10 is ok...
I preordered this. I played 2 minutes of the 3DS version once upon a time and watched 80% of the trailer for this one. Otherwise I'm going in blind. At £60, I better like it. There is fighting in it, right?
It's already a 10 score so the online component only needs to function smoothly to not lower the score.
Don't you think it's strange that Nintendo includes even minor characters but purposely excluded Waluigi? Even 3rd party characters were added but not Waluigi, their own? I guess blood is thinner than water at Nintendo... but knowing Nintendo, there has to be a reason.
I only played it on the N64...but it seems to me that Nintendo made a huge effort to get this game done before the end of 2018.
Perhaps that is the reason we didn't see many "new" big games from them this year as their had most of their team working on it.
Since the N64 game I've never played it again so I hope that I will be able to catch up and also enjoy the game this time around as the first time I played I didn't like it very much...
Can't wait to give it a go!
Smash online has always been pretty bad, doesn't stop the game from being a 10. Now that I have to pay for online too I can't imagine I'll use it much unless it blows me away. Sadly my copy won't arrive until next week, but at least I saved 50% off RRP.
And once this game releases, all of the add-on content will start coming too...Waluigi will probably be added as DLC, nintendo will charge $5 or more for each of these, then we'll be putting so much extra money into the game after launch, it won't even be funny...because, hey. that's what all of us will do!!!!! Can't wait to see if DLC will be added to this though, it would be nice to see other developers add characters and stages to it!!!!
Well, the reviews are making the single player sound pretty good so I may give this one a try, despite not being a big fan of the series.
Sounds like both WoL and Classic mode are absolute winners this time around.
This sounds like it's going to blow Smash 4 out of the water!
@JLPick They've already said there will be 5 non-echo fighters, 5 stages, and music added via DLC
@JAPBOO You aren't required to get a WiFi adaptor.
so around 6/10 ?
You could have given a mark already, we all know the online is going to be somewhere between ass and unplayable
SO CLOSE. CAN'T WAIT. HYPE MUCH. SAKURAI PLS.
Here in France, it's 9/10 everywhere. EDIT : JeuxActu give a 8/10...
Stop crying about waluigi tho.
Enjoy the game as it is. A 10-10 from me.
Hype level; what does the scouter say? Its over 9000!!
They're not awarding a 10 before Waluigi is announced. Lol
I wasn't going to get this but ended up impulse buying the steelbook edition with controller. The hype got to me. But it wont arrive until after the weekend. Which is fine as I just started Zelda BotW after finishing Mario Odyssey.
Oh boy it's finally here
Seriously, guys, complaining that Waluigi isn't playable- even as a joke- has gotten beyond old. Fortunately it wasn't brought up in the main body of the review.
Picking up my copy either tonight at the Gamestop release event or tomorrow right when they open depending on how things go after work. So hyped!
It’s ironic that this is the first time one of my pre orders has arrived early (just now). But I’ve decided to wait for Christmas to play it so as an adult I have something to be excited for again on Christmas morning.
The wait is killing me already!
Not getting it until Christmas so it’s going to be a while yet.
The single player is what I’m really looking forward to.
i am sorry but i just don't get the hype that surrounds this? its just a glorified kids fighting game with Nintendo characters (with none of the ripping out of peoples bones from fighting games of yore) however - that said it does look like something myself and my daughter can play together on (which is why i love the switch - couch co op is what this thing is made for) so i might pick it up when the price drops significantly... unless Raiden is in it - then it might be an insta-buy!
Gonna play the heck outta this game...
I just hope we get Knack and Boss Baby as DLC, and then this game'll be a 20/10.
@kyleforrester87 No fighting, actually, you mostly sip tea, talk, and fall in virtual love with some of the characters like a dating sim. Hence why "Smash" is in the title.
@b0nes We had fighting games before your'game of yore' that didn't involve ripping people's organs out.
Dawn Of The Final day
I'm getting mine on Sunday. I have a 36 hour shift tomorrow, a case presentation on Saturday and an in-service exam on Sunday. It would be fun on Monday to get back to the kids in the ward playing with them, one is a massive fan of Zelda and Megaman so this would be like Christmas Morning to him.
Won't be able to even think about buyin it till after Christmas. Ah the joys of being an adult with obligations to fill.
I'll be playing tonight. If you happen to meet me online, be scared of my Mega Man, come at me bro, git gud son, and ggs.
No birdo, no buyo.
"6/10 - too many characters. IGN"
This game sounds excellent! Good call on holding off to score it before online functionality is added. That'll be important to the experience for a lot of players, so a review score that didn't reflect that could be misleading.
@MagnaRoader Because if online is bust after the game launches, it needs to be noted. Perhaps there are some nigglies to be found as well.
Maybe it's just me but I find the Smash games to be very bloated with a lot of unnecessary fluff, certainly with each new version, and there is a lot of visual/aesthetic inconsistency in all that fluff stuff that I also don't like. Personally, I'd honestly much rather get a more simplified game in terms of just removing all the extra fluff and with a more coherent presentation across everything that's left. I'm totally fine with having loads of fighters and stages and even the whole gallery of 3D trophies to view (I actually love those), but many of the other modes and stuff just aren't really necessary as far as I'm concerned. And it's very telling that this game actually needs a mode/menu that is literally dedicated to teaching people simply how to navigate around and use all the multitude of modes and menus and options and fluff in the game--very telling. But, ignoring that, it looks like another stellar Smash game, which should totally please all the hardcore Smash fans out there I have no doubt.
@Kalmaro but i like fighting games where I can rip peoples organs out! "FINISH HIM" and i grew up with street fighter anyway. on another note does anyone remember an obscure PS game called Bushido blade?
@EasyDaRon That's really the point of SSB. Every fighting game is pretty much the same, except SSB. SSB has more freedom on the strategy and tactics side while also being more accessible, especially to kids. Toss in characters everyone knows and some random elements and you get a game that is really all about fun that can also be a fighting game with the right ruleset. There's nothing out there like it.
@Retupmocnin I doubt it’s anything nefarious.
This game can not be the pinnacle because of these flaws:
3rd party characters: They sucks. They shouldn't be in a Nintendo game. Nintendo is too giant to these irrelevant chars;
lack of individual break the targets;
lack of Board the Platforms;
lack of Home Run Contest;
lack of modes that aren't fighting.
Good game though, but far from the "pinnacle".
The online was unplayable for me on Wii U, the lag being so bad, but that better not be the case now I'm paying a damn online fee!
@Cobalt Classic mode playable in co op ("jouable en coop") is welcome news. Merci beaucoup!
When did this become the "Hate on Smash" page?
@Kalmaro It's just a page with people expressing their own opinions on a massively popular game that most people who have an interest in gaming will have strong opinions on, especially Nintendo fans. That's all you're seeing. It's not "hate".
So it WAS a port after all!!
Seriously considering downloading tonight. I originally thought of waiting until Christmas but I am 38 and have my own source of income. The kids are likely to demand copies though and that may get expensive.
@impurekind It’s why it’s customization is and remains one of its strong suits. You can indulge in as little or as much of the fluff you want.
@b0nes Have you actually played a Smash game?
Other than the game being announced, I didn't spoil myself about the content. So I'm ready to enjoy Smash again. I haven't been a tournament player since Smash64 & Melee but it shouldn't be a problem for me to jump back in. Cool review NL!
@Retupmocnin yes. In my opinion this isn’t “ULTIMATE” unless it has Waluigi. I can not believe they have dissed the fans like this.
Can't wait to play this! But wait, I have to since my wife is saving this as a Christmas present
Now to start avoiding the spoilers like a ninja
@Tirza Uh...I guess your other points are true, but irrelevant third party characters? 😂
@EasyDaRon that’s fine that you think that. I disagree. Been a fan of waluigi since he first appeared on N64.
I'm glad they held this back in good conscience in order to try out the online, but we all know what it's gonna be.
0/10 no Geno
(joking, of course)
This is my First Smash; so Stoked
'There’s also a plethora of other things to do..'
Unfortunately it's missing some of the classic additions present in other Smash Bros games such as Trophies / Trophy Rush, Home Run & Targets =0( This wont't stop me enjoying this game to the max (pre-loaded and ready to rock at 12pm tonight!) but it does mean I will occasionally be back to enjoy previous entries.
@EasyDaRon I mean, I quite like Waluigi. He’s a uniquely freaky spindly weird dude who stands out in the Mario universe, and arguably has more defining personality traits than FE’s legion of bland, sexy swordwielders. I’d have happily seen him in the game.
But... the poster acting like his omission is a deliberate ‘diss’ to Nintendo fans is on another planet. Waluigi absolutely is a filler character, and always has been. One that’s been made progressively more weird and interesting as Mario spin-offs have evolved, but still basically just a way to make the W/Mario Bros divisible by 2.
He’s never starred in any game that didn’t need to fill up character slots. When it comes to freaky Nintendo characters, even Tingle has more time in the limelight, starring as protagonist in two whole games. Even Captain Rainbow has had more main character experience than Waluigi.
Personally I’d like to see all three in the game. But I’m not going to take their omission as a personal slight.
Only and most important thing I need to know -
Do the save files for separate accounts stay separate?
For those who don't know, SSB4 on Wii U shared save information across all accounts. That sounds stupid but that's the way it worked. Anybody who had played SSB4, if you start up the game on another account and make a NEW save file, all of the unlockable content from the other person's game will already be unlocked. The stupidist design decision I've ever come across.
So if anybody wants to get the game, play for a few hours, then start over on a new account and let me know how it goes I'd be much appreciative. Amazon is delivering it tomorrow, but its' going under the tree at Christmas along with Pokemon Let's Go Eevee.
@AstralOrange64
I’m not a huuuuge waluigi fan myself, but I’m more on the side of “why are they excluding him?”. In terms of sheer amount of fans (at this point) that are into him, it seems like he’s a no brainer to be a part of the roster.
As far as moveset goes, we also never thought we’d see Isabelle running around and beating up people. Waluigi could be a simple echo character to Luigi somehow. I dunno, to me it’s just an odd exclusion- and I’m sure Nintendo does have their reasons. shrug
@rjejr They have done for all other games, so one would assume the same will be true here. Can't see why not ^_^
@AstralOrange64 I’m sure Sakurai could come up with something for Waluigi - he came up with something for Duck Hunt and Pirahna Plant. Honestly I don’t care if he is not that unique - just put him in..
Some ideas - Mario Party Rolling of Dice, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Dance Dance Revolution final smash. Swimming in the air. https://www.mariowiki.com/Swimming_Return
@AstralOrange64 https://youtu.be/Xo9dt1zwqZQ
Lessor concern but I'm just curios.
Can we put all of those Mii-fighter costumes on our amiibo and will they stay on? I know the amiibo keep track of their fighter level 1-50, and I think those levels are supposed to carry over SSB4 to SSBU, but we didn't have those amiibo when we had SSB4 - the DLC prices on fighter costumes was straight out of the book of "How Not to Do DLC: Horse Armor Edition" - but now that the DLC is included, it might be worth a go.
Doesn't matter what the score ends up being, God bless you Sakurai.
@WiltonRoots You forgot the plagiarizing disclaimer.
Sounds like will make lots of people happy.
Do not really play fighting games. Only Smash I have played is a few rounds at the house of someone who owns it (just like every other fighter)
@sikthvash Well it was like that for all other games on Wii U as well, SSB4 was the only game I had a problem with. I had 4 accounts on Wi U, my wife, my two sons and myself, and we played a lot of games, and we had a lot of save files, but for whatever reason SSB4 just worked that way. So I never played it, b/c a week after we got it my sons had unlocked all the characters and finished half of the challenges/missions whatever they are called. I felt like there was nothing for me to do, I was so mad, I just refused to play it.
And my guess is with 2 sons it will be a week or so before I get around to playing SSBU, and the first thing I'll check is that my new save file is actually new. Though the not knowing means that first night, after they've played 6 or 8 hours that day, I'll start up a new game and save file just to make sure. But that's not until Christmas. If we were opening it when it arrives tomorrow I'd check this weekend and wouldn't' need to ask. The waiting is hard enough as it is.
@MysticGengar mines being delivered today. I'm hyped for it. Its my christmas gift but my wife is out tonight so I'm tempted to play it and tell her it turned up tomorrow 😂
One more day... I'm not going to sleep friday and saturday.
@Giygas_95
For me, yes.
As a Nintendo only player, I don't care about chars outside from Nintendo.
@AstralOrange64
Why my post would be sarcastic?
Well, I'm a client. It isn't my problem the number of chars. There are more than 800 Pokémon and ALL of them have SEVERAL different animations on 3DS. Much work? Yes. Impossible? No.
And as a Nintendo only player, I don't care about these 3rd party characters at all.
Snake: pff. A single Nintendo game sold more than all Metal Gear games... combined! Irrelevant character.
@Cobalt Yeah but Jeuxactu has zero credibility for the players, so...
@AlternateButtons
Why do people care so much about the score anyway? Would you prefer they do what other sites did for Black Ops 4 and Red Dead 2, and give the game a perfect score before they find out the online sucks (Black Ops 4 and Red Dead Online both ruining their progression to sell microtransactions but waiting to put those in the game until after critics praise them)?
I don't personally care about online, this game reads like a 10/10 for me and I'm so glad that I'm not working today because all I can think about is Smash.
@JamesR Hoping ranked matches have stock option , hated 2 MI use timer.
So excited for tomorrow! Xenoblade 2 and YS VIII have be on hold.
Highly recommend both of those rpgs, YS 8 is such a fun game with really fun story and Xenoblade is just amazing on all levels
Ps Add me @ Jswizz ! Been playing war frame alot too, if anyone needs help.
@Tirza
Smash is all about being the biggest crossover series ever, so having a handful of non-Nintendo reps is cool and shows that even Nintendo themselves can respect characters not their own.
SSB games always bore me to death after 10 hours, as do most fighting games really. Repetitive as all hell. Doing the same thing CONSTANTLY.
What exactly makes it addictive enough to put in hundreds of hours and justify this ridiculous hype? Whatever it is I know that it just doesn't trigger me personally — but I'd like to at least understand...
@Thaswizz
Playing Torna - The Golden Country on the side, it's one of the best expansions for any game I've ever played and definitely has my favorite original soundtrack this year (though Smash Ultimate will most likely be my favorite game soundtrack of all time for having such a huge collection from all kinds of games)
What a wonderful read this was. Thanks for a perfectly written article that manages to stay on point while covering this massive game.
@Carnictis
You're in for a treat! I wish I could recapture some of my first time experiences with certain game franchises!
@AlternateButtons
I agree that reviewers should do that, but I don't know if it's a complication with Metacritic/Rotten Tomatoes. A lot of times you'll see journalists try and get their scores up as fast as possible for these aggregate sites and I think it's misleading, especially in this day and age where you can't be expected a complete game when you purchase it. I've gotta say, I respect NLife and their integrity on this subject, even if the online component being good or bad is irrelevant to my enjoyment of the game.
@JoeDiddley you.. you have the will of Samus. The will of.... the will of Fox. The will of someone in dark souls. I totally see why you’re waiting but maaaaaan... I don’t know if I could wait that long!
Hmm. I was burnt out on Smash, was considering skipping it, but the reviews I've read made it sound like it's got some refreshing new ideas going on top of what makes Smash good.
On the other hand, I'm kind of tired of competitive games overall. I'm old.
But this is Smash...hmm. Decisions.
Welp...my son also has his own Switch and will definitely want it, so maybe that'll be enough.
The big question I have is how customizable is the online? Can we do Squad Smash? Can we do Tournaments? Can we use amiibos?
Really glad to hear the hype isn't being misplaced! - I never got to play much of the previous versions and really excited to be able to participate with this one. Sounds like there's a ton to explore.
Can people still drop Waluigi already? It's lame meme.
How can they call it ultimate when it doesn't have trophies? They could have easily included all trophies from all past smash games. maybe add a few new ones and i would've been happy.
wow the hyper buying orders are fast and furious now. Well I got my orders in and will send one of them to my sister and her kids to enjoy over Xmas. Oh yeah I'll get the season pass for them as well so they can have more fun.
Tonight. 9pm . I believe
@UmbreonsPapa nope. but ill deffo be picking it up for me and my daughter to play!
Another great game coming to the Switch!
Smash 4, eat your heart out.
Just got my copy !!!
So excited 😍
@Indielink correct, but suggested to have a good connection, which sounds as required
@Thaswizz I picked up Xenoblade last year but have yet to play it. The Zelda DLC took my time and then I rolled onto other things. Hopefully a bit of free time over Christmas will give me the time to start it.
Tomorrow can't arrive soon enough.
On preorder, can't wait till I can get to the shop on Saturday to pick up! Never played smash before but can't wait to play this with mates after a couple of beers!! Looks bloody magic
Real talk: is it better than Melee?
My gamecube controller is ready.
Comes out tomorrow, and it still feels like it’s gonna take forever to get here. And I have to work tomorrow so I have to get it after work. Ugh, can’t for this game.
Question, is it possible to unlock characters with using amiibo’s? I just happen to have a Peach, Daisy, and Isabelle amiibo.
@Frenean Can't wait to play it! Going buy physical version, collectors editors kill me! Still looking for octopath CE before I buy. I'm about 40 hours into Xenoblade and it's so damn good, I love it!
Slap a 10 on it already NL...! Even if the online has lag at launch, it's obviously something Nintendo will immediately fix... It seems a silly reason to withhold your score when you're dealing with such a big title and publisher...
this is the last entry, the series just cannot be bigger or bettee
@AlternateButtons This is not clickbait at all. The review is complete minus online, which is actually showing more integrity than all the other review sites. They will either give it a 9 (if they don't like the online) or a 10 (if they do). And what is written here is much more important than whether it is a 9 or 10 anyway.
Preordered Ultimate just because I want to beat the hell out of other players as a passive-aggressive Isabelle.
@Dualmask Go in with the expectation you would have with any game: Just have fun. I was never into the so-called competitive aspect of Smash myself. I just liked beating the living daylights out of others in a free-for-all, even if I lost. It's part of its barbaric, bloodless charm. 8D
@impurekind I call it haters, because if I am not interested in the game, I would not based any opinions on it.
@Iacobus that sounds good on paper but I have some friends, otherwise fine folks, who get a certain way (selective memory about who's better than who and all) when it comes to Smash (and fighting with said friends is pretty much the only reason I bought Smash back in the day), and I am on the fence as to whether I want to get into all that yet again. It's been going on since Smash 64 and what was once fun in our youths is now tiresome to my 40+ year old self.
But in the end, I'm going to play it one way or another. Even if I'm just battling against my son (no interest in playing online).
@EasyDaRon
It's a content monster and it plays really well for both casuals and pros. That's not reason enough?
I'm stoked that directional air dodging is back, and that the online allows for more options (it'd be fantastic to play Stock and Stamina online, and set my preferences as the regular option). The GSP to determine matching sounds like a great idea!
Oh, and I'm hoping now that it's on the Switch, I'll be able to random encounter people to 1v1 Smash with.
Settle it in SMASH!
@AlternateButtons
Why does it matter so much to you? You can't read this review and decide whether or not the game is worth a purchase on your own, you need a number to push you over the edge?
@AlternateButtons learning some flexibility will help you a lot in life
Kinda wish I took today off so I could do my chores and then sleep till midnight lol.
@Dissident
I don't get him. He doesn't care about the online multiplayer, but is upset that the review isn't finished because of that. The idea that a one point difference in score is such an upsetting prospect for him is a bit odd. This review reads like an easy 10, but if it gets bumped to a 9 because of a less-than-stellar online component, why should it matter to him? He says he doesn't care about online, so it would be a 10 right?
Unless he's some kind of fanboy who cares more about critic scores/opinions than his own so that he can brag about it.
@Ryu_Niiyama
Haha, that's exactly what I'm doing! I stayed up all night just so that I'll crash around 12-1pm and sleep until it releases at 9pm here (live in Cali).
This is one of those games where reviews are absolutely irrelevant to me. I'm getting this game no matter what, God willing.
0/10 - No Waluigi /s (I’m one of the less vocal that actually wants the King of Wa, but I can wait).
It’s gonna be a hard time waiting for my preorder
@AlternateButtons
"Online performance is another matter however, as at the time of writing the functionality simply isn't active. From what Nintendo has said it all seems promising, but you can be sure we'll be updating this review whichever way it swings when it's finally available."
They literally say that they'll be updating the review near where you'd normally see the score. What's dishonest about that? From what I've gathered about you, you probably scrolled down to see the score before even reading the review, so you saw that they said they were going to update it even before I did. As others have explained to you previously, it would be misleading to give the game a score when they haven't been able to review all of its components.
@AllHailQueenBoo Thanks, haha. Also I just noticed my comment was #36, and yours was #136.
@JamesR no you'#re not. I have 0 interest in online and only care about this is single player is wortha damn.
Brawl and WiiU/3ds didn't cut it for me.
So is the eshop releasing midnight? And does midnight mean midnight or 3:00AM on the East coast US?
On one hand I'd love to get started, on the other hand, being able to finally launch it just after I should really have been sleeping doesn't seem like a good time to jump in.
@AlternateButtons
This review is like a 3-4 minute read. It bothers you so much that you're going to stop frequenting the site because you lost a few minutes of time? Maybe that'd be best, it's ironic that (read your comment history) you throw around 12 year old YouTube commenter terms like "soy boy", "SJW", and "PC culture", but are whining about having to read a review. I'm not going to bother trying to make you understand how NLife actually has your best interests at heart by not misleading you with a score for a game they haven't fully reviewed yet. You're a lost cause.
https://goo.gl/images/A9Wcai
Colour me pink with anticipation and complete joy. This series will always be one of my favourites with its incredible music, simple but layered gameplay and sublime fan service. Sakurai is an absolute genius with these projects and I can’t thank him enough for all of his incredible hard work and dedication over the years. Can’t wait to play my copy tonight.
@NEStalgia
I think it's 12pm on the east coast, 9pm on the west.
@Tirza Snake is far from irrelevant. This has to be the dumbest comment I’ve read in ages.
Interesting, but if it would indeed be the utimate one, it would have highly requested things like target test for each fighter. I guess you really can't have it all, but this is close and can;t wait to pour many hours into this iteration!
@AlternateButtons
Harassment? I like to get to know the person I'm debating with, especially when their nonsensical whining elicits sympathy. If you really want to be mislead, hop on over to IGN and see how they write their reviews. You're thankfully not going to get review scores for games that aren't fully reviewed here.
@AlternateButtons Im curious. Did the title of the review have “In Progress “ before you read it? Just curious if that was there from the start or added later. Based on my experience reading game reviews, that kind of, off the bat, implies you are getting a review that is to be updated later.
@b0nes Game is just fun yo. It's not a traditional fighter but that doesn't make it unworthy.
Plus come back to me after IK+ ya young sprout with yar new fangled special moves!
@b0nes go away, troll.
Finally this game is coming !!!
So you Smash fanboys can STFU for at least the next 4 years.
@UmbreonsPapa
It did! I assumed he clicked on the article and scrolled as fast as possible down to where the score usually is, so I didn't say anything about it. I doubt very seriously that the guy read the review, but that's par for the course for these kinds of dudes. The ones you'd find in IGN's comment section, who don't even read the reviews/articles and just comment based off of what score was given. The kind of dudes who threw around terms like SJW so frequently that the mods had to ban it.
@the8thark shhh. Let people enjoy things, you sad, wee little man.
Also- IGN is no longer a reputable site, it’s everything I loathe about the modern gaming community with their ‘bought’ or ‘inflated’ reviews of games like Call of Duty and such...
@the8thark
IGN's reviews are never worth reading. They showered Black Ops 4 with praise before microtransactions were added, even though it was obvious with how terribly grindy Blackout is that they would be implemented in the future. They're part of the GameStop/microtransaction/pre-order culture that is plaguing the videogame industry. (Still watch Nintendo Voice Chat on YouTube, though)
@Frenean ignore Alternate Buttons. He’s a child and a complete buffoon/troll. Just block him and move on.
Sounds like the ultimate Smash Bros!
@Alto ha. This is like kicking nicotine.
Getting the code through for piranah plant didn’t help either!
@CorvoRevo
I'll make sure to comment on Smash frequently and tag you in my posts, sweetheart. c;
@Electricghost
I guess your right. Some people want to live surrounded by their own ignorance and not know the facts.
@Frenean
Not all of them are bad. Some of them are alright. Better than this NL review.
Also you have no worries about being spoiled by this NL review as the review is so devoid of content. The IGN review does spoil quite a bit though so best not read that if you don't want to be spoiled.
@AlternateButtons
The score is not the entire conclusion. You're literally arguing that a review's score is more important than the actual written review, which is ludicrous. Do you not know how professional critical journalism works? Take IGN (a well that's so easy to go back to) for example. They published and scored their review even though they haven't been able to play online yet. THAT'S misleading.
@AlternateButtons you are so very sad with your constant arrogance and complete incompetence. Do grow up or just walk away; each post you make is worse than the last and to see you act the way you do is worse than a Chris Chan freak out...
Begone!
PS- you acting like a victim after someone questions you or your asinine posts and nonsensical BS isn’t a personal attack... good grief- are you really this daft?
Hello everyone! I have returned from the past!
I went back and checked the older reviews fo every past smash game on NintendoLife. I'm happy to report somebody predicted Mega Man in Brawl comments section, and Smash 64 is the only Smash game not to get 9/10 on this site.
Edit: this didn't have a score before, and now it does. 10/10 seems extremley accurate!
Am I the only one that will be playing Smash using joy cons?
@the8thark I highly doubt you know any hard facts or employ original thoughts on anything for that matter...
@the8thark
They gave a review score without having played and reviewed the online component, which they have a tendency to do with a lot of games. Or at least, they review the online portion before it's out of its beta state. That's sloppy journalism.
@AlternateButtons we all know you’re going to be playing by yourself tonight, kid.
Don’t act cute; you’re a very sad individual and a vindictive little one at that.
Congratulations- you just burned several bridges today.
-shakes head in disgust-
@Frenean shoot me your friend code, laddie. We shall do battle.
@Electricghost
SW-7744-2292-2419
Bring it on, soul brotha!
@AlternateButtons
That is a very good point! I do like the gamecube controllers but am not clear if any will support rumble and I think Smash is the sort of game where you need some rumble!!!!
@Frenean
Oh it’s on like Donkey Kong-
SW-1486-8214-1033.
Nice touch on the Soul Brotha bit btw- well done.
@AlternateButtons
Fair enough! Captain Falcon has been my go-to for the past couple of games, but I'm probably going with Simon, Young Link, and Pikachu. I've heard the latter two are top tier in Ultimate, but I'm going to have to get some hands-on time with everyone to see how I like them. Hopefully Zelda is viable this time around, I love the Link Between Worlds design and she's my fiance's main.
@Frenean
I’m going to main Samus and Ridley.
Been looking forward to the latter for ages so this should be a treat!
@Electricghost
Oh man, I can't wait to try Ridley and K. Rool. The first chance I get, I'm tag-teaming K. Rool as Donkey Kong with a Diddy Kong CPU on a DKC stage.
Just give it a darn 10 already
@JAPBOO Suggested =/= required.
Is it required to have a toaster oven for microwaveable foods that suggest a toaster oven for best results? No, it’s a suggestion. Right next to the microwave instructions. 😉
@Frenean I was thinking the same thing; hoho- great minds eh?
Just say 12/10.
@manu0
If Nintendo had have gone with trophies people would be saying it's the same old thing,so they go with something new like the spirits and people still complain.
How do the graphics compare to the WiiU version of Smash?
This game looks so amazing!!! I'm so hyped! I'll be jumping from melee to Ultimate... the Ultimate leap! (besides jumping from Smash 64 to Ultimate!)
@the8thark Oh, still mad about that Warriors Orochi 4 review, huh?
Honestly, if anyone needs a review for the 5th entry in a series to know what it's about, they're not interested in it. The game has only been getting weekly coverage since six months ago. Besides, the article says what the goal is. It's a fighting game, too....so....
Am I the only one on this website not hyped at all for this game?
Glad for the people who are looking forward to it for finally getting their chance to play it.
@AlternateButtons:
I totally get your point! They should mention it in a sentence in the beginning and then give the people the chance to read it or not.
@mazzel You’re certainly not the only one. But you are from a select group that is still happy for those of us awaiting it. Always good when realize not every game interests everyone, but is still nice about it.
Happy gaming!
Can't wait to play the ultimate Kirby game, World of Light.... Galeem... gleam.. ha, I get it
Well this game just seemingly appeared out of nowhere. Did Nintendo even talk about it at all? How are they expecting to generate excitement for a game like this if they aren't even going to bother spending any time promoting it?
Seriously though I am feeling the excitement of my childhood again. Going to give it to my family for Christmas and then watch as they refuse to play with me because my kids say I'm to good and my wife hates it because, quote, "I have no idea what is going on." Single player mode here I come!
@HobbitGamer Except these days, most frozen foods say "do not microwave, heat in oven or stovetop"....which really defeats the entire point of frozen foods. And many of these same foods used to be sold as microwaveable a mere 10 years ago...... hmmmm
Been counting down the days since e3! In 8 1/2 hours, my waiting will have finally payed off.
@Angelic_Lapras_King 100/10.
@Tirza "A single Nintendo game sold more than all Metal Gear games... combined!"
You uh... you really gotta be screwing with everybody here right? Because the Metal Gear Solid series has sold almost 50 million copies worldwide. So technically you're right if the game you're talking about is Wii Sports. But that hardly makes MGS irrelevant. In fact, it makes it far more "relevant" than a lot of Nintendo series.
@NEStalgia Nah, that’s just a suggestion too. Consumption of raw or undercooked food is not recommended, but completely edible. OP does it all the time.
I fully anticipate I will suck at this game. But it looks like a fun way to be a loser. I’ll buy it.
I can't wait to get this at Christmas
@HobbitGamer Nah, so many now say "DO NOT MICROWAVE" in big text. Even though they used to say to microwave them. Almost anything with meat says "DO NOT MICROWAVE"
To which I ask: if I can't microwave it, why would I purchase reconstituted dehydrated food paste shaped like a stuffed chicken breast made of pure, organic Labo?
@HobbitGamer It must be hyped for a reason
And as I have enough games in my backlog, I'm not even disappointed that there is nothing big confirmed beside SSBU. Happy brawling
A cop out. No score. I could understand if you thought the single player game was only worth a 7, but we all know NL will award this game a 10, and you will not deduct points if the online part of the game is only average.
I, like many players don't play online so I only want to know if this Ultimate version is worth the high asking price to play single player mode only. Is it value for money.
You have created a sort of oxymoron in that you cannot now score the single player mode more than 8, to leave room for additional points for the online review. If single player it worth 9 then we could work that online will get 10.
So score the game as a single player game now.
Ultimate means final, or last in a series, one after. penultimate. So no more Smash Bros.
@mazzel me too:p
I'm also not buying it. Not now and probably not later on either. I've had a blast with brawl, had people to play it with coming over regularly. However, by the time the wii u version hit, we didn't get to play it much. And it felt... soulless.
I'm happy the game is great. But for me to buy it, I need to be fairly certain that there are going to be many nights played with friends in order to enjoy it.
Doesn't look like it'll happen anytime soon.
@Kalmaro honestly in this site's comments, it happens with any hype game.
@Cobalt I don't think that a game that only scores a 9 can justify a price tag of £60.
@zool there were games with a lower rating and higher price tag already
But scores are always subject the taste of the reviewer and the gamers. For me, xenoblade and Zelda are definite 9s, if you read the xenoblade review over at Kotaku, it would be a 4. That's because they let someone review it who does not like the series. Also an Idee to not get too much "hype" in a review
Alright, alright! I know we're so hyped up for this game, so let's sing it with me!
SUPER SMASHERS
FIGHT BEFORE YOUR EYES
THE FIGHTERS WAGE THEIR BATTLE TO DESTROY THE EVIL PUPPETS OF GALEEM
SUPER SMASHERS

SUPER SMASHERS
FIGHT BEFORE YOUR EYES
SUPER SMASHERS
@justin233
He is a totally niche character. Only known in gaming forums and news site, like this one.
He is not popular at all. No MGS sold more than 5M but V, only because this games is available in 3 platforms (PS4/Xbox/rent a DRM copy in Steam).
Animal Crossing sold this alone... in Japan!
@mazzel I know what you mean about scoring. But for a port with slightly better graphics, four more stages and a handful of new characters, and the new single player game, maybe a 9 could be reasonable, but I would deduct 1 for being overpriced, so 8.
I will miss this one.
@b0nes So clearly you hate Virtua Fighter... LOL!!!!
@Frenean free to do so. I simply block you.
No Waluigi...9.9😜
Score pending? AGAIN? FOR THE BIGGEST GAME IN THE YEAR???!
Sorry, but this review gets a -10.
There is NO excuse to not give the game a score. You could always score the local content separately from the online content.
@zool
It is NOT a port.
@b0nes I love it for the amount of content and the different combinations.... Plus the different levels of customization as far as skill level.
@Tirza He’s absolutely not a niche character. Maybe you are just ill informed on / not a fan of the franchise?
HA! I liked the Waluigi joke, so funny and original. /s 😒
An obligatory I don't like Smash comment that gets negged to death.
Honestly, I really don't see the appeal.
My body is ready.
@zool "I don't think that a game that only scores a 9..." "maybe a 9 could be reasonable"
Wow...
@geordie Same with me and Pokemon...
I've never been bothered about Smash personally but I'm going to pick this one up to see what it's all about.
@HobbitGamer I agree... will let the network connections decide a nice to have vs "I Want a better experience so must buy it" lol
Nintendo life score 100/10!
So amazing it transends a numbered score I guess.
@zool
I beg your pardon ?
I was playing it yesterday and whilst it's great I didn't have a clue what the hell I was doing lol. I can't see me being very good at it competitively but unlocking everything will be fun.
People who can’t comprehend a review without a number on the end....I feel sorry for you. Is reading words too complicated?
@zool
There are 49 Critic reviews on Metaceitic, and helpfully for people like you who have an absolute breakdown without a number, it’s currently got 93%. You clearly haven’t read any of those reviews or played it, but you’ve summarily decided it isn’t worth the money.
You’re. Trying. Too. Hard.
@Fake-E-Lee I'm right there with you... I was just thinking back on the days where I would pull an all nighter for stuff like this. I'm pretty sure I won't make it past 1 or 2am =/ Stupid work, kids, and adult responsibilities.
Because of Smash Ultimate's release,
I LEAVE YOU WITH
THE TOUCH
Is this a review? Seriously?
Played for two hours or so, loving it, but already seen some framedrops. I hear nobody with the same experience, so I’ll hope it’s just incidental.
@zool
£45 with £5 Pre order discount at Smyths
@MagnaRoader Because the Online functionality is not active yet.
The game can be excellent, but Nintendo can royally screw it up with bad Online performance as usual.
The launch of Splatoon 2 was also a mess, with constant disconnects. It took quite a few weeks until it was sorted out.
We all know, that after all these years, Nintendo still cannot do Online well. /sigh
@electrolite77 I was not replying to the other 48 reviews, I was pointing out the daft decision of NL not giving the game a score, or at least giving the single player mode a score before release date, and is a well don't port with only 4 additional stages and some additional add ons worth the inflated price.
@Cobalt OK, you are pardoned. 😊
@Sgt-Jack-V I’m not a fan of transformers but your post was brilliant.
@MSTRDM mine did too, albeit very briefly. I’m sure it’ll be patched.
SMAAAASHING!!
@Frenean Thanks! First Impressions?
I AM CRAP, and its a little unfriendly; it assumes a lot, I had to set cpu handicap to 1 to win a match (with Pikachu) lol; but i have three unlocks! so yay!
@Electricghost
You don't know me well at all then.
Also best not to assume, actually read what I say and you'll see I do my best to justify everything I say with fact.
It seems you are still very angry. Time you ate a snickers and chilled the hell out.
@the8thark I know enough that you’re a troll and a contrarian.
Nothing you say do or think holds any value.
Go away.
@rjejr Oh, I had no idea that it was an issue on the Wii U. Will be able to check tonight as I need to properly introduce Smash to my Daughter.
No Waluigi is an utter attrocity! Nintendo pretends to be this wonderful company upholding traditional values, but they stamp this innocent guy down into the mud every chance they get. Not getting it. Unless it's heavily discounted. In that case screw Waluigi!
@electrolite77 get rid of review scores. Eurogamer did the right thing and edge did the same for that one off special where they put no score on the end.
I don't understand why people need a score. I swear they don't actually bother reading the actual review and just skim through as the little number on the end is all they care about.
@zool
Are you saying this game is just a port?
Is it not the Wii u game with stuff added. Like 4 new stages? Rather than a brand new never before seen version.
There can be no perfect score without Waluigi. Please understand.
This might be the first Smash Bros. that I buy. This sounds and looks amazing.
@b0nes Don’t expect the price to drop significantly for a long while
@The-Chosen-one,
What you mean Waluigi is not in it?...no buy from me,I mean there are only 70 players to choose from and over a hundered stages,not enough content...Nintendo are having a laugh.
Interestingly, this is actually the only Smash Bros game NintendoLife has ever given 10/10.
@kobashi100
No I don’t get it either. Maybe it’s too hard to read words. It leads to all sorts of bizarre logical leaps to justify what someone thinks the score should be, like @zool and @Diuran are doing, just to give too examples
10/10.
Called it.
@kobashi100 That is correct, I look at the score first. I trust that if a game has a rubbish score it is a rubbish game. And if it has a reasonable score then I read the review. I want to know if it is value for money, the difficulty level, and if the review is based on the game being completed or just a few levels.
The score is an indication of a game only and would be better if scored out of 5 like movies and books are.
And we finally have the most obvious core of the year. Not like I needed it anyway. It's an instant buy for me.
@AstralOrange64
Well IMO the ultimate Smash Bros was released on the Gamecube in 2001 ha.
Knew It. Like everybody else
@needmorecowbell im suffering the same problem.. in exacts 19 minutes ill leave to play! i even demanded my wife to put the game and male the update! hehehehe
I pre-ordered a physical copy from Walmart during their E3 discount. While I'm happy to have saved a little money, it looks like my copy isn't scheduled to arrive until mid-next week. And that's if nothing gets delayed due to the Canada Post strike. I should have just gone digital with this one, LOL.
cant wait to rush to gamestop today and grab my copy and run home to put it next to the unopened copy of Mario party! only to be opened on Christmas Day! Yay!!!!
@rex_rex Hah! Nice! Thanks for reminding me about that update!
A release of this magnitude, I'd feel guilty if I don't chime in somehow!
I preordered but fell asleep before going to my local Gamestop for the midnight release last night - ah, the demands of adulthood...
Even so, I'm excited to pick up Smash (and my Sega Genesis Collection) after work today.
I've never been a Smash player, but the World of Light mode is sure to suck me in and really give me incentive to play.
Can people please get over Waluigi for once?
@mikegamer NEVER! WAAAAAHHHH
Pickup SSD ULt and regular for xmas present and got one Season Pass will get another after paycheck comes. Then send out the second one for xmas present to sister and her kids.
World of Light was a little bit of let down as I hoped for a platform adventure but it is a nice bit of diversion. That mode stops this from making this a perfect game. I'm also not fond of that black hole section during the classic mode...needs to have more than just one level layout.
Other than that, far far better than the 3DS and Wii U versions which I could never get into and maybe better than Melee
Daeeeemn, this game is good!
My girlfriend and I have kicked each others butts for two hours now.
@RedYoshi999
where did you get it from ?
search for this anywhere have this for £40 or less ?
@johnvboy To put it in perspective, I bought the Japanese version of Street Fighter 2 for my SNES literally a day after it came out in Japan for £70. 8 characters to pick from. At a time shops in London were charging nearly £150 for it on import (my mate picked it up for me in Hong Kong on the day of release), and people are crying about this being only 70+ characters, and "only a 9", for £60. I hate to use the word entitlement, but it's like listening to Mariah Carey and Elton John rolled into one. Ungrateful sods. They need to get over themselves.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lhf9OvlX9g
Good graphics face off,the Switch version is one awesome looking game.
@Azikira Not my problem
@johnvboy to add to that what normal human being has the free time to master 70+ characters? There’s people that cry about a lack of “AAA” games, there’s very few publishers who would give people that same level of content without creaming people for serious amounts of cash. EA or Activision would give us quarter of the content and milk us for the rest. But apparently we need “AAA” games. 🤔
@WiltonRoots,
Some people will not be happy no matter what,but complaining this game does not have enough content screams of the age of entitlement to me.
Some sad people are giving Smash a one star review on Amazon because it didn't come with a Steelbook. I was under the impression the Steelbook was a Nintendo store exclusive. Even so, if Amazon did list it as such, and then made a mistake, is that worth a one star review...I smell Waluigi fan(anatics).
@johnvboy We live in a world of bedwetters with first world problems sadly, I really wonder how they'd cope in a real world scenario that didn't involve sitting in front of a TV, but that's another topic.
In the meantime Smash is downloading and I hope to find out what all the fuss is about tomorrow morning/afternoon! Bear in mind I'm coming from a Street Fighter/Virtua Fighter/Tekken/Soul Calibur background I'm looking forward to Nintendo's take on fighting games.
@WiltonRoots I couldn't agree more. Had somebody complain about Odyssey being £40 which is the same I paid for Mario 3 in 1991. Adjusted for inflation thats £81 today!. Sold my NES to pay for £65 SF2 cart on the SNES in1992 (£128 today). Games are huge now and comparatively inexpensive.
@WiltonRoots,
To be honest fighting games are not usually my thing,and I have never bought any of the Smash Bros games,although I did come close to buying the Wii U version and had the demo downloaded on the 3DS.
With all the hype and videos surrounding this latest version I have finally bitten...ordered Smash ultimate from Amazon last night with a £50 voucher I won from work...so excited to get this,and I have not even seen any of the Smash directs.
@Crump,
With this new game I can't see how anybody could complain,the visuals have received a massive upgrade imo,and the sheer ammount of content on offer out of the box is insane,if this title had been offered by many of the western triple AAA developers,half of this content would have been locked behind a paywall.
@johnvboy Sounds good man, we're both going in with fresh eyes on this, it looks like it's going to be a blast. We should report back on Monday!
@WiltonRoots,
Good Idea...I think my copy should arrive tomorrow.
I bought a dog on the street and called it Larry.
I would had made a more serious article and video about the game if I were the being or beings who made them. I also would had not pronounced the abbreviation "Bros." as if it were the word "bros" if I were the one who was narrating the video and would had not mentioned a certain "Sakurai" without explaining it in either one of them (by the way, could the creator or creators of the article and video explain it here in this section?).
^ Thumbs down and ignored.
@Nickster076 Shaddap troll.
I love this game, I got the limited edition, controller, 3 amiibo, guide and got the dlc it's awesome... But it not ultimate, missing trophies, stadium, 8 player etc ... Better come in updates
This game is pretty perfect, but I can't wait for Super Smash Bros. Ultimater!
Hmm a 10 may be a bit overkill, but so far I am liking it. Looks like another very cool and robust Super Smash.
Anyone else a little disappointed you can't use the video capture feature for this game? What reason could there be for not using it? The system would struggle or something? It manages perfectly fine with a huge game like Zelda, though.
No home run contest this time either is disappointing too, as well as the lack of target smash. Those modes were always a fun distraction from the fighting modes. Maybe they'll add all these things with future updates, but other than that it's a brilliant game.
The video game equivalent of a Greatest Hits album.
Fun, but basically Smash 4.5
@justin233 You want an open world Pokémon game with all regions and I am the ill informed?
lol, educate yourself about Pokémon first. Oh, but you want something Hemorrhoids Pikachu, so I think that we can not have an smart discussion.
@Tirza Go back to your bridge, troll.
Am I not allowed to wish for an open-world Pokémon game?
The hemorrhoid pillow comment was funny and I stand by it.
I really don’t care what you think, so you can leave me alone now, thanks.
@Nickster076 oh wow, look at the edgy eight year old on the Internet...
Go slither back into the sewer, little boy.
What a way to end the year. Pokemon Let's Go and Smash! I am in gaming heaven right now.
I just read an article about people being completely fed up with the online portion of Smash Ultimate but this review says it works fine. I guess I'll find out soon enough.
My internet plan may cause lag. Download speeds are fine but my upload speeds are terrible until my internet provider can provide fiber optics to my rural community.
Splatoon 2 seems to work fine for me though so maybe it will be all right.
Outs-10-ding... I'll see myself out.
Next step: open world!... It worked for Zelda.
@Rhaoulos How would an open world fighting game work
Oh no, not Dragon Ball Z Sagas! Anything but that!
Graphics: 0/10 - No Waluigi
Music: 1/10 - Lacks Waluigi Theme
SFX: 1/10 - All sound effects should be Waluigi grunts
Story: 0/10 - Waluigi was not the one who survived
Controls: 10/10 - Great
Online: Doesn't even work because Waluigi is not included
Overall: 2/10. No Waluigi.
I just beat world of light and it’s total trash, and that’s the only “new” thing in this game. 6.5/10
As much as I like the game overall, it's not a 10/10. The online department is severely lacking.
Also things like break the targets and among other highly requested things are missing, so it's just "Ultimate"on the roster of characters, but not in modes.
Can´t understand the hype with this game at all and sadly its all my switch owing friends play
First Smash game I’ve ever played, and I’m damn glad I got to finally play the series. My main is Incineroar :3
My savior jesus has been reincarnated as SSBU. I AM SAVED
@GavintheShiba Noice main
Yup. One of my favourite games of all time.
I have the game and most of it's dlc, 10/10. It is not a stretch to say that it's the BEST SMASH BROS. GAME EVER.
