An analyst has predicted that Nintendo's next console will be an iterative evolution on the current Switch and will cost $400 at launch. Oh, and it's apparently also coming this year.
Speaking via a predictions round-up over on GamesIndustry.biz, Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of game industry consultancy firm Kantan Games, has also predicted that the console's games will increase in price to $70, bringing them in line with recent gradual changes made to PS5 and Xbox games.
Finally, he's quite adamant that, with Pokémon being associated with handheld gaming, the 'Switch 2' will at the very least maintain the portability of the current console.
Here's Toto's quote in full:
"The time is finally here for a Switch successor, even though I can say a "Pro" model actually did exist and certain developers were already working with the dev kit. I believe the next hardware will drop next year (2024) for $400. There is a high chance that games will cost more, too: $70.
"The next system is also likely to be an iteration rather than a revolution. Nintendo might add some bells and whistles to the device, but it will be similar to the current Switch. And because there is Pokémon, and Pokémon is associated with handheld gaming, there is no way on earth Nintendo will drop the portability feature for their next big thing."
Phew. That all sounds pretty good, doesn't it? Well, price increases aside, anyway. We're quite keen on the next console keeping the general concept of the Switch intact, as we're sure many of you fine folks are. It certainly makes sense for it to maintain its portability, especially given the sheer dominance of Pokémon as a franchise.
Of course, it's worth keeping in mind that this is merely a prediction; it's tough to accurately predict anything from Nintendo, and what the console will end up being could well be very different. What Dr. Serkan Toto states, however, does fall in line with previous rumours regarding the console's release window and overall concept.
What do you make of this latest 'Switch 2' prediction? Do you think it will maintain the general concept of the Switch? Let us know your thoughts with a comment down below.

I’m now going to put complete trust in this persons prediction and be extremely disappointed if it doesn’t come true.
Because I’m a REAL gamer
Everything as expected so far (maybe a bit more expensive than expected?).
...and it will TOTALLY be revealed/launched this year.
If you want a graphical bump today then go and by the Mclassic.
This is just someone making a guess!
Okay, but what is he basing this on? Other than the same speculations and scraps of hearsay the rest of us have all known for ages now?
Very much the educated guess of what is happening else in gaming will happen to Nintendo.
But knowing it’s Nintendo, expect taste’o’vision, a mandatory Diving Bell add on, and graphics not being any different than they are now.
So that is why they haven't re-re-released Wind Waker they are waiting on the Switch 2 and they want to charge me more money when I get my 3rd copy. Well played, Nintendo, well played.
i pray to God that is not 400 because i won't pay that, and they don't seem keen on reducing prices over time anymore for some @#$& reason 😖
best case scenario, they also release a "consolized" non portable version for 200 👍 ive wanted this to happen from the very beginning and i still think it's a great idea.
What does Patcher think?
I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say that multiple games will be released for it, per year
As long as it doesn't go digital-only, I'll make it work.
Used games go for fair prices on ebay. And I don't have to get new games on release day.
I am hoping they keep the OLED screen and add faster loading times. Animal Crossing takes forever to get started.
March reveal available holiday 2024
It's merely a prediction. But in the hopeful case where it is iterative, it had better be a generational upgrade in specs. Not reinventing the wheel while beefing up the specs a ton is usually great, a half measure in specs isn't.
@LinktotheFuture
My fingers are crossed for an internal SSD. The Steam Deck has been out for nearly 2 years and the mid and high end SKUs have an SSD.
All info points to an updated Tegra processor with an updated generation (Ampere or Ada). The community generally believes it will be mobile. These new predictions don’t add anything meaningful to the discussion except one point.
Iterative vs. revolution. Whilst as a consumer I would prefer iterative, Nintendo voiced before to their investors that they’re fully aware of the regressive nature of a sequel hardware (SNES vs. NES, Wii U and Wii).
This is the only piece where I am unsure if the console will in fact be a “Switch 2” or something different. Everything points to a Switch 2 but is Nintendo willing to repeat history to sustain sales without significant growth or will they take a risk?
I suspect the former but I am unsure.
This is what the people want. Not the price increases, but upgrades under the hood. Anything else will be a disappointment. I'll shell over $400 if it means another 6+ years of life on the Switch, as long as the screen technology doesn't go backwards, OLED or bust.
I don't listen to these types of rumors unless Bloomberg is reporting them.
I do believe (or at least hope) that the new console will just be a better Switch, but the fact that one of his justifications is "Pokémon is associated with handheld so it'll stay a handheld" makes me not believe a word said here.
A) This isnt a prediction
B) he's not an analyst.
But i guess we're going to do this all year with every gutter rat that claims to know anything
While I don't listen to rumors if the successor is OLED from the start I don't mind paying 400. Nintendo games will likely start to range from 40 to 70 anyway. so I don't think they can keep costs low enough to make a system that is 300. At least not at launch.
Damn consultancy is such a good racket.
This guy's prediction is:
Slow down there, Nostradamus.
The only new thing is the new console being iterative. A lot of consumers are expecting this and it will be a smart move.
So.. 'Switch 2' will be like the extremely successful Switch 1.
Yeah, everyone would be able to guess that.
Also price increases.. yeah.. we all know about inflation.
@-wc- I’ll pay 600 and 80 for games
Hahahaha!!! Y'all roasting this guy over the coals with your comments!! Made my afternoon!!
i think some version of switch 2 will be $450 due to increase in power and storage and possibly having a oled screen..
I mean, it’s just an educated guess goes from an industry expert, but this all makes perfect sense. In fact, I’m hoping for an ongoing commitment to portability. The switch is my console of choice largely because of this aspect.
I think he has got it spot that it will be an iteration, a powerful Switch with a little bell and whistle here and there.
Release date and price correct as well.
Lol this is just guessing.
And for 400 i pray that is would be that price.
I expect it to be somewhere near 450. (Only if the rumors about the specs are true and it has an Oled screen)
Iterative upgrade is exactly what I wanted. $400 is fine. If it doesn’t play Switch 1 games then I’m not upgrading for quite a while since I already have too much in the backlog. Trying to buy one for the first few months will be difficult.
Sounds like a commenter on here or gamefaqs or something rather than a paid professional. Lol.
Knowing Nintendo, I expect the Switch 2 to literally have bells and whistles attached
They need to increase the power alot and not just an small bump like they did going from gamecube to wii. It isn't just for the common expectation of graphics but more so for 3rd party publishers.
Here are some of the must haves I want in the switch 2 if it going to be the same concept.
These are what I am hoping. If backwards compatibility isn't included then I won't be buying a switch 2 for atleast 2 years later. If it is included and does do what I would like it to do then I will defo buy it day one if there is good exclusives or in the first few months of release.
Prediction? By analyst? It's the same kind of BS youtubers has been farming for year, why is this even relevant
Sounds just about right imo; $400 console, 2024, $70 games and a hybrid.
Apparently I'm an analyst too.
Only good thing he said is that it's coming this year. Biggest question for me is if games will have some upgrade path or we will have to pay full price to play digitally these games on switch 2
Nintendo's iterations on previous consoles for newer systems have almost always gone down as some of their best pieces of hardware (Game Boy to GBA, DS to 3DS....ok maybe not so much Wii to Wii U but you get my point XD)so an iterative successor sounds like a great idea in my opinion. The Switch's concept is so sound and fulfils a gap in the market (handheld gaming on par with that of home consoles) that will likely stay around for a very long time that literally all you'd really need to make it even better is just a buff to it's overall horsepower (though fixing stuff like the stubbiness of Joy-Cons or the oh-so frequent controller drift would also be a massive bonus). If they did all that kind of stuff then I'd be glad to fork over the €400 asking price predicted here.... once an entry in one of my favourite series is on the horizon that is (i.e. Pokemon or Splatoon).
don't like the insinuation of higher game prices though, keep that s*** at €60 max thank you very much
I think if the console is iterative, I really just hope they stick with Switch 2 as the name. XBOX has floundered with its naming conventions, and the Wii U didn't set the world alight.
Switch 2 just makes sense and the normal numbering system hasn't done Sony any harm (ironically, the PS VITA bucked their simple naming trend and didn't do as well for itself). Super Switch, Switch U, new Switch...no thanks. Just plain ole Switch 2.
New year, gotta start it off right and make a prediction about Nintendo’s next console. Anyway, I am thankful for these articles, they keep my spirits up about us actually getting new Switch this year.
I believe we're just a few weeks away from an official announcement. The numerous rumors that have been piling up have give us an idea of what the final version of the Switch 2 is going to have. Also, I don't know how Nintendo is exactly going to market their new console. Like you guys said, it's more of an iteration than a revolution, but what features is it going to make it apart from the current Switch? All the rumors we have gotten is that it'll have a performance upgrade, but is that really the only difference. I hope Nintendo is sure that they're to start production of the Switch 2 and it doesn't repeat history like the Wii U 10 years ago.
Darn it, I was hoping it would be Michael Pachter who predict so that it won't be $400 and that it'll be backwards compatible with DS, 3DS, and Switch games.
WOW, YET ANOTHER PREDICTION! I AM SHOCKED. AND YOU CAN TELL I AM NOT BEING SARCASTIC BECAUSE I AM USING ALL CAPS.
Even though it's a relatively safe bet, it feels like a pretty good prediction. It seems the new console will be a leap akin to GB to GB color or 3DS to "NEW" 3DS lines. It'll still be considered a new console as games produced for the system probably won't be backwards compatible with the OG Switch with a few exceptions. $70 will be an industry standard, and it makes sense considering the $60 price jump was set back in 2007.
I don't mind paying £60/$70 for bigger games like Metroid Prime 4, but if they start charging that much for stuff like WarioWare and Big Brain Academy, they're gonna have a problem.
Thing is, iterative hardware doesn't appeal to the broader market, as shown by Nintendo's sales numbers over the decades. A new Switch won't outsell or even come close to the current one's numbers, if history tells us anything. I'm a fanatic so I'll buy whatever they put out regardless, so it'll be amusing to see what they end up doing.
@Gerald hahahaha. Nice one
@TheBigK If it really is just another Switch with a couple added bells and whistles, it could still hit those 3DS numbers. Not especially impressive compared to the DS and its Switch-like success, but still a solid showing.
Ah, yes, the analysts . . .
Guess I better trust Dr. CEO analyst consultant from the highly prestigious dot biz domain.
$70 per game would not be cool. It won’t have PS5 specs.
I’m fine with the rest though, and it’s basically what I’ve expected.
I love the idea of continuing the hybrid concept. I am not fond of portability staying around exclusively or even especially for Pokemon. As a non-fan, I don't like the idea of one franchise, and not even Nintendo's top-grossing one, wielding such inordinate influence over the direction of their hardware. Mario, Zelda, and others should be of higher priority IMHO.
Bottom line though is continuing the hybrid paradigm is probably the right move for Nintendo going forward, for at least the foreseeable future.
400$ Is really not that bad when you think about it.
We will see what happens.
@TheBigK Sony and Microsoft have been pretty exclusively iterative and it's doing them pretty well (Sony more so). I just think Nintendo has struggled to market iterations, especially with awkward naming conventions. The 3DS was pretty successful in the end, as were the GBC and GBA.
I don't think anyone can expect the Switch 2 to sell as much as the first, but if it sells half as many it'd still be Nintendo's third most successful home console and ahead of the NES.
@-wc- Ever heard of inflation?? Why would a new console cost the same as or less than the current console?
The 'Switch 2' has been in the prediction stage for like...5 years now.
Personally, I can predict that that the Playstation 6, Playstation 7 and Playstation 9 are coming out sometime...in the future. (I cannot confirm the Playstation 8 at this time)
No doubt it will be powerful enough to play ps4 generation of games well, probably have ray tracing (limited) and 4k graphics... My biggest concern is not having an oled screen...I absolutely love the oled and having owned all versions its how it should of always been and going from oled back to led will suck
I got my V1 Switch at the equivalent of USD$550 (that was its MSRP on launch where I live). It costed me around 500 hours of work to gather the money.
Unless Toto has some insider info, this speculation is completely predictable and is something I would have told anyone years ago.
I can make stuff up too! Here is my WAY CRAZIER prediction:
The next Nintendo system will only have one game, but it will be the ULTIMATE game that appeals to everyone. And it will be on a subscription model, with new content added regularly. It will have everything... puzzles, action, adventure, FPS, platforming, RPG, strategy, flight simulator, shmup, arcade fighter, kart racer, farm sim...
It will be all things to all gamers. Nobody will ever want a new game or a new system ever again.
/totally legit prediction
I've put £500 a side for the Switch 2 which might get me a game or two with it.
Personally I think it will be £300 - £450 with different size internal storage options.
Either way I can't wait to see the reveal ❤️
Dr. Toto advises investors and works with game developers. So he's well-placed to know information like this. By "iterative," I believe he's indicating the new console will be like the PS4->PS5 leap where we get a boost in power and graphics capability but not with a new "gimmick" like we had with Wii or Wii U. So this bodes well for backwards compatibility.
Now its my turn for my prediction. I do think it will be revealed maybe later in this year but wont be available until 2025. I think Nintendo is hesitant in going into the next console and rightfully so since the Switch has been incredibly successful and fears of a failed launch for the next console.
I do hope it is backwards compatible to.
He's just restating old rumours. Must be nice to be an overpaid video game analyst. Seriously why anyone would pay for such a "service", only to have one's product still possibly flop is beyond silly.
@Aawill91
"Ever heard of inflation?? Why would a new console cost the same as or less than the current console?"
(us launch prices)
saturn - 399.99
dreamcast - 199.99
psx - 299.99
ps2 - 299.99
snes - 199.99
n64 - 199.99
gamecube - 199.99
its okay to be wrong, but wrong with a sarcastic attitude just looks bad. ✌️
People are going to be so shocked if they do their usual and release something out of left field no one saw it coming. Perhaps a portable console the size of a couple credit cards stuck together that sits in your wallet and transmits to mixed reality glasses. I so hope they stick to the Switch idea and beef up the specs
This Nintendo Life analyst largely agrees, but early 2025 is also plausible.
What frustrates me is that “Switch Pro” never went away. This still just sounds like a Switch with prettier graphics. Good luck convincing people this thing is truly new and not another Switch model, because that’s exactly what they might be tempted to think. I’m not saying it’s going to flop like Wii U. Marketing is just going to be a challenge sorta, kinda like Wii U. Might as well just be called “Switch Pro” and treat it like the next step after OLED, even though I sadly don’t expect it to be OLED…
@GalaxicGlobe
"400$ Is really not that bad when you think about it."
it really just depends on your personal financial situation, doesnt it? i wont be spending 400 but i can imagine some lucky kids will talk their parents into it.
Likely to be correct, but I'm keeping my expectations in check.
The only thing I want from the next Switch apart from better hardware is a more ergonomic layout for portable sessions. Please remember you have adult fans, Nintendo!
I don’t care what it does so long as they put in hall-effect Joycons. Anything less and I’m not buying it.
@Croctopus But that's what Microsoft and Sony have been doing for several generations now: "It's a Playstation/Xbox, but a more powerful one!"
I hope Nintendo are going for a more powerful Switch TBH, "Revolutions" (In other words: Gimmicks) can pan out great, like the Wii, or flop like a dead fish, like WiiU or... [shudders] Virtual boy, one might even argue 3DS succeeded despite, rather than because of the 3D.
Just put out a console that isn't outdated on release day for a change Nintendo, that's all the "Revolution" i want.
If the Switch 2 is priced at $400, it better be worth every penny. I only use my Switch in handheld mode, so the $100 dock that comes with every Switch was a waste of money. I hope that Nintendo sells a handheld only version like with the Switch Lite
Hopefully this isn’t the case. 400 dollars and 70 dollar games are way too much. Especially because nintendo games never go on sale.
No thank you. My uncle says it will cost $150 and go back to Gamecube disks.
@cpmh1234 Switch 2 sounds dumb4ss and, it's the name the press gives it to try to relate Nintendo to PlayStation. Switch NG sounds better.
Nintendo must be insane in thinking in charging $70 for it games, Nintendo next gen has just started bad
Damn anal-ists and their "predictions". Nothing will come out this year, we might get an announcement, but not a release, by any chance. "iterative evolution" might mean it will be like the Super Nes was to the Nes, and, I think Nintendo might apply the $70 to the certain games only, like they did with TotK.
Random dude makes generic predictions based on trends. Oooh. Let me guess, some games released on it will be great, some good, some bad and some horrible.
Should have said his name was Miss Cleo.
I don't mind paying £70 for certain games because of the budget behind them but I'm not paying £70 for HD ports and Remasters, and games like Yoshi, Kirby and Mario Spin offs. The only games right now from Nintendo that I believe are worth £70 are the newest Zelda, Xenoblade, Splatoon and 3D Mario games, then £60 at most for Metroid, Pokémon and Fire Emblem games.
Welp, there ya have it folks. Switch 2 confirmed says that guy.
$400 is a lot of money.
But so is $300 and folks had no problem paying that for the Switch. But to clarify, this is all in the context of those who have the disposable income to buy these things in the first place.
My opinion? If the next console is really a step forward that justifies a $100 increase from the last console, I don't find the increase too egregious.
@XCWarrior don't ever underestimate ms cleo. She was always there to answer all our questions in the early to mid 2000s.
Context: this is the same guy that predicted a Zelda remake in 2023 and that the current Switch would launch with a Super Smash Bros. 4 port:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/01/rumour_super_smash_bros_planned_as_nx_launch_title_bandai_namco_working_on_several_games
More context: this site apparently lacked the manpower to give Hogwarts Legacy a proper review, even though it was one of the biggest releases of 2023.
2026 or later.
what drugs is this guy smoking? Nintendo has never released a home console for $400 (maybe as a bundle with a game or games, but not a base model, right?) and I doubt they will now. more pure speculation from an "industry insider" with no source
Would like to see 2024 and expected games to go $70 that is a given at this point. Anyone expecting to see a Switch 2 less then $400 is smoking something good that the rest of us needs. Prediction is far better then Switch Rumors that has no source to verify it. Love how we got NintenDoomed coming out in full force. Having DLSS3.5/RT would be the best it have coming.
All ball-park, reasonable guesses anyone could make, but the difference is, this person gets paid to spout them.
@Hwatt
They could STILL call it a Switch Pro if they wanted. Switch 2 would just make more sense to average consumers who would understand this is wholly brand new. Don't want another WiiU situation, for sure. Feel like the Wii2 would have definitely shown the masses this is NEW hardware, but still the Wii.
$400 is about right due to inflation. Everything is expensive these days it seems. Even though the Switch hasn't had a price drop, it very well could have in 'real terms' since it hasn't gone up either! (I'm no economist, mind.)
@Edu23XWiiU That would likely suffer with the same issues as the Wii U, or even the new 3ds. It needs to sound like a successor and not an add on.
The Switch launched for $299 USD in 2017, which is about $387 today, so $400 would be about right for a 2024 hardware launch.
Even if this guy is right, there's still gonna be some sort of short lived gimmick built in. I say it will launch for $350, not $400.
I've never once seen a Nintendo hardware prediction be true, from analysts, insiders, or miyamotos adopted niece on 4chan. Every educated analysis is a shot in the dark.
@Gerald yeah let’s get the opinion of the head psychic. That may be the best thing to do, figure out what he says and expect the opposite
The most I'll pay for a game is $60 cad, and most of the time I'll find them lower. There are a variety of ways to do that, but like others have pointed out, you really do not need to buy a game new on release day.
Are predictions from some random dude to be considered news from now on?
@Ironcore
"If you want a graphical bump today then go and by the Mclassic."
"Mclassic"?
Obviously games will cost more and there is no way next gen cost's any less than $400
@UmbreonsPapa
"$400 is a lot of money.
But so is $300 and folks had no problem paying that for the Switch"
Speak for yourself!
Here, I'll demonstrate. 300 dollars was alot of money to me when i got my switch in 2020, and its even more to me now if anything.
400 might as well be 4000 because i straight up cant responsibly afford it. 😐
Removed - unconstructive feedback
@Ironcore Lol no. mClassic helps with AA, has nothing to do with processing better graphics or performance overall, but it gets better the lower the resolution, so SD consoles are better for it than Switch.
Those prices would make sense with the economy being what it is nowadays. I'm not sure I'd classify this as news since it's speculative anyway.
This is what I'm expecting and I'd be totally fine with it.
@-wc- That is true but compared to other consoles 400$ isnt bad.
I will be buying it for 400$ especially if it lasts for as long the switch has.
Sorry if you think its too much but in all honestly its not (nowadays its pretty good actually)
@-wc- Not aggressively saying this. But if you're going to respond to my post, at least respond to the entire post and not a snippet. I explicitly put my comment into context about it being more so a case for those with disposable income. But if it wasn't clear that I was taking those with financial constraints into account, then yes. If you don't have the disposable income to purchase a console, $300 or $400 feels like $3000/$4000.
@-wc- I paid scalper prices for steam deck. It was awesome when everyone wanted them, and I had one, but then sucked after everyone had them.
This is the most predictable prediction I have ever seen. "Nintendo is going to do what Sony and Microsoft did". Thanks genius, what a prediction.
Nintendo has their own methods of determining pricing, and it typically involves coming in at the lowest price point possible. $400, adjusted for inflation, could be at that point...but it also may not be. No doubt the console will be "iterative", who thought otherwise?
The Switch 2DS, releasing this year will be exactly the same but run in 4K, double the battery life and have an optional 3D effect.
Nintendo will then follow up with a true successor in 2027 called the Noober Groober duder.
@UmbreonsPapa
APOLOGIES, it appears that i glanced past that part of your comment! my reply is redundant and you covered it well. i appreciate your candor. 👍 thanks!
@SabreLevant
obviously im aware that inflation is a thing. 👍
i intentionally ignored the sarcastic bit about inflation, and my response was to their specific hypothetical question: "Why would a new console cost the same as or less than the current console?"
a product is worth what the market will bear. im out of this market if it goes up to 400. thats all i came here to say, and i said it ✌️
Oh yeah and which magical pixy SoC is this Switch 2 going to have?
There is currently no next-gen mobile SoC available from neither NVidia nor AMD that offers a true performance boost to current Nintendo Switch and Valve Steam deck and able to retain the 3-5+ hour battery life both Switch OLED and Steam deck OLED provide today.
Valve has already said that a possible Steam Deck 2 is at least 2 years away still, due to lack of a viable next-gen mobile SoC.
That is why the new Steam deck OLED still has the same old AMD mobile SoC (just more power efficient version) .
Both NVidia and AMD are supposedly still working on a next-gen mobile SoC that is power efficient enough and these won't be revealed until later this year or even next year.
So there is no way Nintendo is going to announce/reveal a Switch 2 this year. Earliest they will do a reveal end next year, with possible release in Q1 2025.
@GalaxicGlobe
yes, 400 is too much FOR ME. i dont think i said it was unreasonable compared to other consoles which are also too much (for me,) and i didnt buy them, either. ✌️
i have never, and will never pay more than 300 for a console. if i cant get it at launch, thats fine i rarely get them at launch. 👍
I would pay 400 for it if it has enough power to run all third party triple A games and is still portable and can connect to a monitor. If I need to buy a second console for those games like happened with the Switch I will think about it. But if they release a new F-zero I will buy it at any price...
I'd gladly pay $400, maybe even $500, just to be able to play regular Switch games at a stable 30fps/1080p. That's all I want from the next generation – the bare minimum.
That and maybe an XCX expanded remaster as a launch title.
nothing about this is cemented to be true, as if you look at past news cycles for this time period of new nintendo systems on the horizon, you see all kinds of analysts giving their takes and whether theyre right is up to chance. but with that being said, this is the most likely path they will take if they dont pull a nintendo and try and reinvent the wheel.
@-wc- id say it will go down in price like the 3ds (assuming the analyst is right) but i get the feeling that they wont need to for this console
News: Industry insider is several months late to the party in predicting what 98% of people have been speculating for ages now.
(For the record, I'm still in the 2% boat who thinks we're not getting a Switch 2 this year, though.)
@epicgamner
i like your optimism, but given that the switch never dropped im not holding my breath. ✌️
As expected, all this needless speculation at the start of the year is just unbearable. Let's just wait until the February Nintendo Direct. After that, it'll be clear whether or not Switch 2 is happening this year. If it's like last year's September Direct with more remakes and other fluff, it should be coming. But if Nintendo announces quite a few new games and even another big one, it's not happening.
This is the safest prediction I’ve ever read. I would be surprised if any of this isn’t true.
It's just a guess, he also guessed it rains down in Africa.
Definitely guessing, heck I guessed the same thing like a year ago lmao.
@andyg1412 Lol, I thought for years those were the lyrics
If it's not called Swiitch, I'm not interested.
We effectively did get a price cut on the current-gen Switch if you account for inflation. An inflation calculator tells me $300 in 2023 dollars is equivalent to $244 in 2017 dollars. If it had maintained its price in real terms, the Switch would cost $369 today.
@burgerkingsauce
Oh, relax - loosen up a little. Don't read the rumors if you're gonna feel the need to be so uptight.
Not saying the Switch will last forever, but, it's going to be a refreshing change to have nostalgia for a console and still be able to go out and pick one up retail.
(lol)
@rallydefault lol I’m not being uptight I’m just making a stupid joke. I just think it’s silly to write articles about pretty baseless predictions, just because they come from analysts
Backwards compatible, region free, physical releases and I am all in!
Never thought I’d say this, but at $400 I may hold off until a major game releases exclusively for it. We’ll see, though.
@Kilroy I have tried it on everything and the best consoles to use it on are the wii u and switch, I wouldnt even bother with anything else tbh.
@Mario500 it’s a device which improves the graphics of the switch via the hdmi. They cost about £80 and well worth the money. I cant believe everyone is not using it.
Almost everyone will be disappointed when the next Switch console is just like Gamecube - Wii or Wii U - Switch upgrade. Not chance that an affordable console will have a specs similar to PS4, or PS4 Pro or even PS5 without costing +$800 to +$2000.
Also it's incredible to see that many still believes that "Switch 2" will have one Full-HD OLED scree, or even TWO of them! Just check out how expensive the Steam Deck OLED is, and it's below PS4 in power level...
So long if "Switch 2" indeed still is a hybrid console, it will 100% be at as best Xbox One's level, a bit below or above to maintaining the affordable price range plus having a good battery life (99% of people here ignores about it), nothing else.
A hybrid console at Xbox One's level will still be a HUGE upgrade. My own wishful (!) prediction is that "Switch 2" will be a bit above X1, like at 1.4-1.5 Tflops which is just a bit below Steam Deck. But Nintendo is always Nintendo in the end, so lower your expectations a bit then...
It will be probably at between 800 gflops or 1 tflops with 6 or 7 GB RAM, and a 800p screen, no OLED. I don't think that Nintendo dares to taking a risk with a +$400 "Switch 2". So the specs will be lower than expected then.
I wouldn't gets surprised if "Switch 2" is a barely 1.5X upgrade from Switch in the end, sadly.
What the $400 price means is a little confusing for me. A Switch costs $400 in Canada, but I'm guessing the article isn't citing Canadian currency. I'm assuming it's USD but since I'm not American I don't know how that compares. How much of an increase is the predicted $400 compared to the price of the current Switch?
@WhiteTrashGuy
I think you misunderstood my comment. I’m not questioning the name of the product. I am stating that I am unsure if the next console will be similar to a Switch or will actually be a revolution. Like the transition between Gamecube to Wii, Gameboy to DS, Wii U to Switch.
If the next gen console is a follow up to the Switch in the likes of SNES to NES or Wii U to Wii, it’s very likely that the console will not supersede the sales of the Switch. History has proven that they’re less successful (if success is defined by consoles sold) if they iterate. A Switch 2 / Pro will be nice for sure but I’ve always enjoyed when Nintendo disrupts conventions and defines a new strategy or way to play. Chasing perf is not their strong suit.
Backwards compatibility would be nice digital or physical but who knows. Depends how the account system is besides what has been said.
My hope. Keeping Switch elements (separating joycons, dock or base console and handheld dual screen option, aka the PS Vita TV and Vita handheld, Evercade console/handheld, same hardware but syncing images between them or the TV is involved) but dual screen syncing to a console or the TV.
Even if it doesn't happen I won't be that disappointed but it will be unfortunate. Switch is good but other than library I already have enjoyed PSP with a cable to my TV/Vita/Wii U more.
I know using a phone to sync to a TV is very laggy but for third party apps and not the best phones it does a fair job (the TV delays a lot, good for video content, not for gaming it's too many seconds behind). What will we get who knows? We aren't getting Xbox One Windows 8 like aspects any time soon on a single screen I bet. Would be cool but doubt it. Even dual screen phones are kind of bland because no one wants to risk it for a niche device their apps yet. Let alone games for it to use both in interesting ways.
Is R&D experimenting? Who knows. Will they try something different maybe?
I don't want a $400 console that's just more powerful it will be boring. Naming and marketing will always be important but still. I already find current gen boring.
I need gimmicks to make me care to buy a console nowadays. Something retro gen didn't have why? Because even with pressure sensitive buttons of PS2 I found games with more exciting and fresh mechanics on 5th to 7th gen still. Let alone older gens then that. Nintendo has done a fair job with game design and I still have yet to experience many IPs but I mean the mario sports updates have just been sad (not my type of arcade sports games personally).
PSVR2 is fine but even then while Indies are good it needs more support. But oh Occulus because the userbase size. The PC/Mobile audience excuses AAA publishers have.
The software as in the OS/UI side is ok not great (groups suck on all 3 PS4/Wii U folders were better) but even then eh the games are still boring and the controllers don't even use the features that well in exciting ways (then again I struggle to get games with motion on Switch at least for those I've picked up so far I'll get to those that do eventually).
Let alone oh good hard drives well why not a good way to demonstrate it Rift Apart not heavily scripted rifts, why yellow rifts that are stationary when in Portal on PS3/360/Switch you can control them besides the game's level design rules and fast loading is who cares, is it good yes, is it exciting no.
Crack in Time had teleporting between areas and a ship exploration level select (something Starfield can't even do right sadly, No Man's Sky is more impressive).
I'm just enjoying more retro experiences or researching original Indies, let alone certain AAs with design I can get behind then anything else right now. On any platform. I don't buy first party PS/Xbox anymore the IPs I did care for that were different aren't going to happen and any I was familiar with as continued series suck now they aren't pushing them enough. It's not nostalgia it's them playing it safe too much.
So Nintendo first party and third parties on other the platforms.
@Purgatorium
It’s generally understood globally that when “dollars” are mentioned, it’s US dollars. Irrespective of your location, that’s due to the overall size of the American economy, value for their dollar, and other economic factors
Exchange rate is around 1.30 CAD : 1.00 USD.
400 USD = 500 CAD min.
If it did cost 399 us dollars, they cannot still sell oled switch at 349.99 if backwards compatible. Assuming a release next holiday season that is.
@-wc- I think a full home-console version would be an awesome idea, as I know plenty of people don’t use the portability anyway. Or they could make it so it links up with a portable-only version like the Switch Lite.
@LinktotheFuture I believe Animal Crossing takes a while to start due to processing all the changes to your island depending on how much time has passed since the last time you played, and not simply because it's loading.
@Gavintendo They would never do that. Big Brain Academy on the Switch is $30 and WarioWare is $50. At most they'd both cost 10 more, so 40 and 60, not 70.
I hope they keep their case by case pricing so that not all games that are 60€ on the Switch are 70€ on the Switch 2.
@P-Man
yes!
that is my concept:
switch 2 deck is a 199.99 home console with a pro con.
switch 2 lite is a 199.99 handheld.
switch 2 "pro pack" (working title) is both at 399.99, essentially what we have now (hybrid experience) except since the "deck" is now a console, "asymmetrical" game play (a la the one thing wii u can do that switch can't) is possible again.
furthermore, others could join with their S2Ls, and it would be essentially the multi gamepad experience that we all dreamed off in the wii u days. 😎
edit - meant to say, that the best part of all this is "NO F'N JOYCONS!" 😂
Oof. US$400 means that it will cost AU$600, maybe even AU$650 here. Forking over just a little more for a handheld PC would be more tempting.
And I'm already p'ed off about games not being in the cartridge in full. What possible excuse do publishers have for not using 32GB or the long-fabled 64GB carts?!
It's been nearly seven years since the Switch launched. Cut the BS about cartridge costs being too damn high. If, however, the cartridges contain an additional partition so that software updates and/or DLC can be installed directly to the cartridge instead (and could be used across multiple consoles), then I would happily pay whatever the hell they please.
@Sisilly_G
at 400 it does seem that whatever it is might pale in comparison to what Pocket PCs will be doing for the same money. 🤔
@Aurumonado then you must not have played totk then..
@-wc- : While I agree that there should be a TV-only Switch (2) alternative in addition to whatever the new Lite looks like, it won't cost 1/2 of the standard model. $300 at launch, maybe. $200? No chance (not at launch anyway).
399 prince will be with a lcd screen a oled screen would cost 50 dollars more..
switch 2 will sell like crazy so why are people complaining about the price?
Portability and backwards compatibility are the big things for me. Price increases are unfortunate but expected.
@Edu23XWiiU Switch NG? That is supposed to sound better than Switch 2? Who in the world would call a console Switch Next Gen and why? What would they call the one after that? It would only next or new early on. And then what?
The name makes no sense and tons of people would be confused and ask what that even means. Looks like you didn't learn anything from the Wii U.
@Sisilly_G
you are probably right that it wouldnt be 200, but in my fantasy here there is no "standard model," simply a home console and a "lite" (i.e. a normal handheld with normal, adequate controls) and they play the same games and can network.
Where did we hear it all before? Oh, right. Everywhere.
@Hwatt again, Nintendo has a history to be cautious about with home console followups, but Switch is a hybrid portable machine, and Nintendo portables' track record is much better in that regard (VB aside, but its undercooked stopgap nature screwed around and found out).
@cdubbed generational spec boosts are a given, but an OLED screen would depend on how much it kicks up the price and how many folks Nintendo will realistically expect to pay that resulting price alongside you.
@-wc- to play the same games, these units would require the same hardware, thus defeating most of the purpose fans seek in a Nintendo home console as opposed to the "underpowered" Switch to begin with.
i think one thing everyone seems to be forgetting is that even as inflation has occurred, over time the cost of technology has gone DOWN, as the capabilities have gone UP.
ask your grandparents what they paid for an early VCR and tiny CRT back in the day if you dont believe me.
the fact that, adjusting for inflation, a SNES cost MORE in 91 than a switch in 2017, actually cuts against the "but inflation!" arguments, not FOR as some are trying to argue. (i e consoles have gotten cheaper despite inflation, so why would the next console need to be more expensive simply "because inflation?")
@nhSnork can you rephrase that? i feel like theres a miscommunication happening but i want to understand. ✌️
@burgerkingsauce I mean it was as close to a horoscope prediction as it could be. Almost zero chance it doesn't fit the next iteration of the console because there is nothing concrete in the prediction. So, doubt there is any way you can be disappointed from that vague statement.
What would this Switch have that the original Switch can't, besides prettier graphics? More customization? Fun features like Streetpass or Miiverse? Will it have controllers that don't break or get defective?
I'm sorry, but as it stands, I'm bracing myself for not being all that impressed by this last-gen Nintendo PlayStation. If people are happy with that, good for them. But it's all going to depend on the games for me, whether they cost more or not. If the lineup doesn't impress me much, I'm waiting for 2025. I'm sure it would sell out and be scalped to death late this year anyway.
Games for sure are definitely going up with the next Nintendo console. As for the console itself, it will probably increase too.
@Hwatt That doesn't actually answer my question.
I'm basically asking how much of a price raise $400 is compared to the price of the current Switch.
In other words, how much is a Switch in USD?
@Purgatorium 350 oled. 300 vanilla. 200 lite
@Purgatorium
I shared with you the context so you understand why it’s predicted in USD. Just as any console MSRP is reported in USD.
I don’t think you need us to google the current Switch cost on your behalf, no offence.
@1day Thank you! That's what I thought. That's a pretty big price hike. I can see why people would be upset.
@-wc- I'm in disagreement, that sounds like a terrible idea considering portability is what gives the Switch its flexibility.
And yes i know the Switch lite exists, which I also think is pretty terrible of a concept. But it's obvious it's aimed more at families with lower income for their kids to play around with. So it gets a "you tried" prize.
@Purgatorium but it’s only 50 more than the Oled. For me, having only a lite, it’s somewhat difficult to consider buying that (oled) now if the new iteration might come out at the end of year for only 50 more.
...and it will be called Swiitch!
@Croctopus it’s supposedly going to have much better load times and I would imagine better graphics too. I am not huge on graphics, but I have had an Xbox One since 2014 and Series X, Ps5 since Jan. 2022 and July 2022 respectively…. Not expecting full current gen capabilities, but the equivalent of a portable Xbox One/Ps4 would be amazing….
Unfortunately i think the price is about right, as much as i hate yo admit it, but this seems to be the case across the board for everything, so i doubt the Switch 2 will be any different.
In terms of release date, they need to drop the Switch 2 this year at the latest, waiting any longer and they run the risk of having to compete directly with Sony's next machine, i know a lot of people like to make fantasy claims that Nintendo isn't competing with Sony, but try telling that to mothers who have to choose between the newest PlayStation or newest Nintendo for their teenage boys for Christmas.
Theres a good reason why Nintendo doesn't want that smoke, even as a Nintendo fan i agree, it isn't worth it.
@Samalik
you are entitled to your opinion 👍
that said:
"I'm in disagreement, that sounds like a terrible idea considering portability is what gives the Switch its flexibility."
I'm not sure what this even means, really.
"And yes i know the Switch lite exists, which I also think is pretty terrible of a concept. But it's obvious it's aimed more at families with lower income for their kids to play around with. So it gets a "you tried" prize"
there's gotta be a less judgemental, elitist and mean spirited way to say that. 🤔
@Olmectron wow. where do you live? what is your job?
Although this is just another "expert" taking a guess, £400 seems realistic. I got a Steam Deck OLED on release which cost more and if Switch 2 is going to meet those specs, I can see it being at this price point.
The SD has been fantastic so far for me so hoping the Switch 2 hits that as a benchmark in terms of power, battery life et al.
They could offset a higher price with a pack in game.
Be interesting to see what Nintendo does with the joycons. Love them or hate them and reliability to one side, it's the only console option offering two player out of the box. All others you need to spend circa £50 extra for a second controller.
A decent sized SSD would be nice but Im happy with micro SDs to keep the price down and for those still staying physical.
Nintendo gonna pull a switcheroo and release the Wii U 2. Only this time the gamepad will be like to the Virtual Boy where you gotta put it up to your eyes like goggles to use it.
This is a pretty whacko prediction if you ask me. Like seriously, what is this guy on?
Anyone with half a brain cell can see that the reason the Nintendo LABO team has gone quiet is that there’re currently working on something big. Something REALLY big:
The world’s first fully-functioning all-cardboard console. Everything from the speakers to the circuit board, meticulously crafted from aerospace-grade cardboard-fibre.
Not only that, but it will connect directly to the brain tissue, offering a level of realism that puts VR to shame. This will require fairly extensive cranial surgery and the removal of much of the pre-frontal cortex to accommodate the device, but the results will speak for themselves.
Ladies and gentlemen, prepare your bodies and minds for the next generational leap in gaming: Nintendo LABOtomy.
…Ehem. Yes, it will probably be a souped up Switch with a few neat (or perhaps largely useless) gimmicks thrown in for good measure. Expanded smartphone connectivity, more social media integration, maybe the return of certain elements that were popular during the 3DS/Wii era (channels, etc.). Given that the Switch is such a stripped back, no-nonsense ‘games machine’ there is plenty of room to expand the ecosystem without making drastic changes to the hardware itself.
Predicting Nintendo must be a frustrating job
@-wc- Definitely second this idea👍
Hopefully this is correct. Everything we’ve heard suggests a decent bump in graphical power, they just need to carry on with the same design rather than reinvent the wheel. I’m worried they’re still gimmick obsessed and they’ll waste development budget on building in a hologram generator and a Pez dispenser and 7 microphones or something.
The price doesn’t sound far off. The OG Switch launched at £280 which is about £360 now. An increase in game prices seem inevitable. They haven’t kept up with inflation or increasing dev team costs and despite what some think, they aren’t immune to that.
Wow, so illuminating! Any one with an IQ above room temperature (centigrade) can deduce a Switch 2 will be a glorified update of the current format because it's so damn popular.
Sorry, no, Nintendo unequivocally denounced as false those rumours of a Switch "Pro" in development. The existence of a 4K dev kit means nothing, as it could be a simple R&D exercise, as these companies are always looking ahead. Most of us are thinking the Switch 2 won't even be 4K, so a "Pro" to be released 3 years ago certainly had no chance of it. At best, any new hardware would have revolved around an early Switch successor if sales began to stall.
I guess these clowns, and basically the entire media, will never get over being duped by the Pro fantasy all those years. Yet it was this humble user that constantly slapped down the notion. Those two big hardware rumours (the red box and OLED updates) of the time proved to be false attributions to the usual iterations that Nintendo always do, not some super enhanced, super expensive model selling besides the base model. Even Sony and MS are quiet his cycle, and that's because the birth of the mid-cycle "Pro" last generation was due to the sudden proliferation of 4K and HDR early in those cycles. Yet everyone suddenly thinks a "Pro" is the new standard. Bizarre! PS5 and XBX are now into their fourth year, so would be due. It's just rumours for PS5 and nothing for XBX. I'd be surprised to see the "Pro" concept eventuate from anyone, ever again.
@Alpha008 Not really. Nintendo is so predictable. Their history dictates they will push a system for as long as possible, and, if required, release iterations along the way to ensure longevity. If the system is a dud, they will abandon it.
The problem these days is trafficking in rumours is quite lucrative, and there's an endless amount of people looking for attention. That creates the confusion. If you look in retrospect, the Switch, being so popular, is being flogged for as long as possible, and got two revisions (the red box and OLED updates) to help achieve this. Gameboy, DS and 3DS all got the same treatment, and even NES and SNES got revisions. The N64 got a memory upgrade. The Wii got controller enhancements. The Wii U was abandoned.
As for a Switch "Pro", always a fantasy. Nintendo unequivocally denied all rumours. They were the red box and OLED updates that rumour mongers promulgated as a Pro. To think Nintendo would release a super enhanced, super expensive model mid-cycle to sell beside a base model, it went against all their history. Even for Sony and MS, so far the Pro concept is a one-off, and that was due to the early emergence of 4K and HDR in that particular cycle.
When it comes to predicting Nintendo, look at their history and use your own common sense. You'll be right most of the time.
I think any reasonable person can make these predictions. I'm expecting to pay $400 or more for the "Switch 2" and to pay $70 more often for Nintendo games, but I do not think that will be standard price. Metroid Prime 4, Mario Kart 10 and the next 3D Mario are all likely to be $70 games.
I do hope they have more up their sleeve.
I'm not buying another system cut from the same cloth, but with more power.
I like the Switch very much, but it also does represent a step back in a couple of areas I consider crucial, so if they really were to just serve more of the same, I'd probably sit one out.
@FirstEmperor That makes sense.
It’s going to have a clam shell design or I’ll eat my hat.
Given that everything is becoming more expensive 400 seems like a reasonable prediction.
Honestly, this is just a guess and one that practically anyone could make, I've definitely seen better ones here on Nintendo Life and even this very comment section.
Also if the thing has full back-compat, then you'll save at least a cool hundred on the trade in for the Switch 1.
Dang! I would be happy with working durable controllers.
What ruined video game magazines and websites starting 30 years ago?
Constant “reporting” on speculation and predictions.
Analyst needs people to keep hiring him.
Next Nintendo system to be made by Nintendo. May require eyes, hands to use.
Okay, snark off. This guy isn’t taking into account how huge the Switch is with on-the-go people. Maybe I read this article differently? I don’t see it with his out-of-context quote.
Economy is rotten worldwide. He predicts people to spend $400 on an electronic toy and $70 for titles? He needs to share what he’s smoking.
@HalBailman
Every time you say Nintendo was obviously never going to do a Pro because historically they have never done that or it was because of 4K, you conveniently gloss over how the "New" 3DS is a Pro.
In regards of them vehemently denying one, we know for a fact they have never lied before, right?
I am absolutely all over this.
All we need is more power and back compatibility.
@Ironcore Pretty sure YMMV here. Quality modern TVs, particularly ones with a Gaming Mode, already do some of what mClassic does without the extra cost. Probably why there are a ton of articles/posts out there that claim the mClassic is a scam.
And in case @Mario500 missed my comment earlier, mClassic improves AA and resolution.
At least it isn't patcher!
But still, analysts suck.
But this one is right, games will go up.
But we've already seen that so EVERYONE knows it is an inevitably.
I, however, do not see Nintendo releasing a $400 price point console.
$350-$375 maybe.
@Kilroy Absolutely not a scam, everyone I've ever shown it to in person was convinced.
I've tried it on lots of displays, consoles and game combinations and it absolutely is worth the money imo especially with certain games like mario odyssey and the zeldas on switch just to mention a few.
I honestly thought it would've been a must have when I got it and still dont understand why everyone doesnt use it, I guess the misinformation you mentioned may be part of it but I thought enough people would at least be curious about it.
Evolution. Good to hear this. İ think it will be a big jump to Switch 2. İ hope this is true.
Personally think they should offer two/three variations.
The Switch hybrid (& maybe handheld only)
The home console only.
I never play handheld so I don't need the screen or battery, but give me a dock that can give extra power to play games in 60fps and I'm sold.
Both consoles should be able to play the same games.
@jamesthemagi 3DS was an iteration and replaced the old model and sold at the original RRP while the old model was put on clearance. A "Pro", in terms of a PS5 Pro, is a super enhanced, super premium model selling at a premium price alongside the base model. The 3DS simply did not offer the commensurate upgrade in resolution and frame rate as did a PS5 Pro. In fact, there was none. It was mostly cosmetic and peripheral improvements like a Switch OLED. Probably this penchant to call any new hardware a "Pro" contributed to the confusion!
We can only go on known facts and Nintendo denied any Pro in development. Furthermore, this is supported by hard evidence of the two iterations coinciding with the two main rounds of rumours. At best, the rumours were false attributions. At worst, complete fabrications.
@HalBailman
The New 3DS was not a replacement to the 3DS. They were sold alongside each other for a long time. The iteration was both variants of the 2DS or the XL models. The original 3DS received a price drop so the New 3DS was sold at a higher cost. In fact, the New 3DS was almost non-existant in the US. The XL model was the one mostly found in stores alongside the "old" version.
You are extremely wrong in saying that it was mostly cosmetic changes. The New variant had a more powerful processor, which was evident in improving performance of certain titles and to take it a step further, there were games that only play on this variant. In fact, the entire SNES VC was only available on this variant. Not to mention, the new nub as well.
You are right, we can only go on known facts and it is a fact that Nintendo has outright lied before about their hardware development to preserve current console sales. You are also incorrect on the timing of the rumors. The rumored developer kit of the Pro version happened after the release of the OLED Model.
@cpmh1234 it will sound like a succesor, Switch 2 sounds generic and unimportant.
@BTB20 CODE NAME dude, code name, learn to understand what you read.. At least, it's more original than Switch 2, that sounds like a 13 year old came up with it. Besides, that's how Billy Kotic from Activision called it from that email that was showcased on the Microsoft trial against the FTC, so, that's most likely the codename for the console.
@1day Yeah, I think that's an issue Nintendo has to consider when announcing this console.
@Hwatt None taken. I hope you got the sense of self-worth you were looking for.
@NinjaNicky like Xbox One S or Series S? I would be very happy with either….
@Edu23XWiiU Nobody anywhere here said "code name", not even you yourself. You said NAME and nothing else.
"Switch 2 sounds dumb4ss and, it's the name the press gives it to try to relate Nintendo to PlayStation. Switch NG sounds better."
That's what you said.
The other person you're replying to didn't say anything about code names either. And what would it matter anyways?
We're talking here about what the console is going to be called, not about a company internal development code name. Because that is the only instance in which Switch NG would make sense. The actual finished product when released should be called Switch 2 and not NG. Like I said Switch Next Gen as a name for a commercial product doesn't make sense.
The code name doesn't matter at all. The Game Cube was called Dolphin. What does it matter to the finished product?
It's about making the console successful, which includes not creating confusion among customers. Switch NG would 100% create confussion just like Wii U and New 3DS did.
On the other Switch 2 would not create any confusion and it would immediately be clear that it's a new console and the next big Nintendo console. Nintendo NG would first make tons of people ask what NG stands for and then be confused about how this console is Next Gen or New Gen when it's 2029 and the thing is five years old.
How tf would Switch 2 sound unimportant and NG not? Is this a lazy attempt at trolling or what?
Also he's called Bobby Kotick and he doesn't know anything about internal Nintendo things.
Switch 2 is definitely coming this year. If it weren't we'd have seen a revision in 2023, two years after the 2021 OLED, to push sales another 2 years to 2025. No revision = 100% guaranteed Switch 2 in 2024
The lineup also makes it more than obvious this is the tail end in the run up to Switch 2.
Expect a crap load of 3rd party games to be announced for Switch 2 in that first year as the gold rush for early adopter dollars turns into a mania
I've put a moratorium on any further Steamdeck purchases until Switch 2, as I expect we'll see ports of Baldurs Gate 3, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Dragon's Dogma 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, Visions of Mana, Persona 3 Remake, etc. Not all will be day and date, but they'll all make their way over at some point.
If the Joy-Con design is the same; it is a NO buy.
@Gerald ha ha Patcher? Well, he'd say it's 50/50 on Switch 2 coming out this year. Flip a coin.
@cpmh1234 I really like the idea of it being called the Super Switch, but only for nostalgia, NES to SNES.
@flarocque Switch Pro controller is the way to go. Zero issues after almost two years of use
@-wc- I can play on the toilet. let's put it that way.
And as for my comment for the Switch lite, I can't think of any other way to word it. It's the budget option. No way around it. Even seen kids in public have it a lot more than adults, who take the base ver.
So much contradiction and misinformation in this. If Nintendo's new console was just a minimal-upgrade over the current model, there would be no reason for the secrecy and subterfuge (Nintendo President claiming that their new hardware was not shown off at Gamescom when it was reported by major reputable, journalistic outfits that it was.)
We would have seen it already. Nintendo isn't talking, so people are just making up their own stories at this point.
The only thing in this that I will agree with is the $400 price-tag. That I can see. I don't expect the new console to be on-par with the PS5 or XSX, or even the higher-end hybrid systems, but it's pretty dilapidated to claim that it will only be somewhat more powerful when the Tegra X1 is a 9-year old chip.
nVidia has more powerful alternatives that they can use that would still give it at WORST PS4-level power, which is substantially-better than the current Switch and it wouldn't even be expensive to do that. They could easily make a PS4-level Switch for $350 and sell it at a profit. When you think about games like Uncharted 4, Ratchet and Clank, God Of War 4, and Spider-Man all running on 11 year-old hardware, and you add in the mastery that Nintendo is able to do from a development-standpoint regardless on the power-level of their system, PS4-level power may be all that they need, even though we all want more.
@d2k Nobody said it's a minimal upgrade, he said "iteration rather than revolution", which means an upgrade like PS4 -> PS5 instead of a complete overhaul like the Wii or the Switch itself were, completely regardless of hardware power.
@Samalik
I agree that it is the budget option. My objection was of your "terrible concept" characterization, because i think that having a lower cost option for people is a terrific concept 👍
I wonder if you didn't simply mean that you don't like the design of the lite itself. 🤔 because about that, I could agree with you.
(though i have mostly the same complaints, and then some about the design of my gen 1 switch 😆)
@Kilroy
Ibought two 8BitDo SN30 pro+ a few years ago; no problems with those. But I travel a lot and having the Joy-Con drift resolved once for all would be great.
Yes, because analyst get it right so often.
@jamesthemagi Sorry, you're wrong. The old 3DS was discontinued put on clearance. Of course there was overlap in sales because stock was still on the shelves. It was called New 3DS for a reason: it was the new version. 2DS and the other variants were exactly that: variants. Much like a Switch Lite.
I never said the processor was the same. I said there was no graphic improvement like seen with PS4 Pro. That's a fact. So you're right about the processor; wrong that I referred to it. That a few games required a New 3DS further moves it away from the Pro concept as that gives a substantial graphic improvement to ALL existing games, not be a required model for a handful while offering no graphic upgrade.
The Switch iterations did follow in the wake of the rumours. That's a fact. While you can believe anything you like, I'm commenting on known facts to formulate my analysis. Clearly it's been more accurate than any of the industry "experts".
Mexico. I was a cashier when it launched. I earned the equivalent of USD$260 monthly. 48 hours of work per week. The console was USD$550.
@-wc- people clamouring for a new Nintendo home console usually do so in the hope of seeing newer games come to it faster without losing the zoomer fluff in the visual department, but having a handheld "lite" version would mean having to optimize ports for its hardware threshold anyway.
Why do people gladly spend over $1k every two years for upgrading their phones (which is useless, you're not texting or watching YouTube faster) but not half of it on a video game console that will last over 7 years?
Switch 2 needs to do two things: include backwards compatibility, and perform at or above the level of a PS4.
If they can't achieve the goal of providing modern-era graphics and performance, they should delay releasing a new system until they can. Anything else would barely be an upgrade.
@MK73DS That's a great argument against upgrading phones every two years, but not a very good argument for releasing new game consoles with only meager improvements.
@nhSnork
oh i see. 👍
yeah I dont care if the console is more powerful than a wii U lol so I'm definitely not in that crowd. I just want to play interesting games, new and old, on my tv, in an affordable way.
also i think technical limitations make new games more interesting. i lost interest in "modern gaming" when there became essentially no limitations on scope, scale, and "realism."
EDIT - I have to admit, I would like to see what nintendo could do with a console that keeps up with competitors again, a la gamecube. so i guess im a walking contradiction 😂
heres what i really want, truth be told: a switch pro, AND a gamecube 2, for the next generation. i think the gamecube 2 should be in the neighborhood of ps5 and play switch pro games in addition to gamecube 2 games, and network with switch pro for asymmetrical and LAN type gameplay situations.
id scrape together 400 for that console (yeah, I'm all over the place,) but not a graphically enhanced switch without alot of specific improvements to especially controls.
The price increases make a lot of sense with the crazy inflation we’ve had. I mostly wait for deals anyway and use various reward points to get my must have day 1 games. I’m fine with a $400 price point if it will do 1080p/60 consistently for a new generation of games and have backwards compatibility. OLED would be great but I’m almost 100% docked.
This will be the future in general for Nintendo you feel. There is no one handheld and one home console iteration per generation. They'll go hybrid for a long time and for a number of generations IMO. I have said before it'll be like a Switch 2 Advance type console rather than a big generation bump or change in tech anatomy of console and the way you play it. Fine by me.
I think the source here is merely talking safe common sense in terms of predictions.
Sort out the problems with Switch 1 and give me OLED and backward compatibility and we are away. Mind you, $400! Eye watering.
@BTB20 Switch NG sounds like a codename, and Nintendo would never put something as bland as "Switch 2" as the name, sounds stupid and dumb, and totally unimaginative. The console will sell because of its essence and games, the name will do nothing to that. Be sure, final will be something good, not a ***** name the press puts out, and the slow minded people took as the actual name, or something that has not been announced yet hahahaa.
I would like a Switch 2 to be a home console only with PS5 Pro-like specs. I know that's not going to happen so I would then like to see Nintendo take a Steam Deck approach and launch with 3 SKUs where the tech specs are the same but differ in storage and screen quality:
1. Base Model. 256GB NVMe SSD. LCD Screen (maybe smaller). $400
2. Mid-Tier: 512GB NVMe SSD. OLED Screen $500
3. Top-Tier: 1GB NVMe SSD. OLED Screen. $600
Rough pricing. To take advantage of fast data speeds, like PS5, I think games will need to be installed so storage space could be important. Nintendo could increase margins on the mid and top tier while still being able to release a more affordable option. Perhaps the mid-tier and upper tier have physical backwards compatibility and low tier is digital only, if a X1 chip is needed (not sure of the tech requirements for BC). Of course, full BC on all tiers would be ideal.
If they end up doing a Switch 2 Pro I don't think the above would cut into sales since the Pro would have increased specs and core gamers are likely to be the ones to double dip on a system.
Switch 2 Pro controller needs a better D-Pad. I returned 3 Switch Pro controllers to Nintendo when the Switch launched and the D-Pad sucked on all of them. I'd like analog triggers, as well. Still don't know why they regressed on that. Maybe a small touch screen but battery life would suffer.
Obviously, better joy-cons with no drift and better ergonomics.
Pie-in-the-sky: Reverse Wii U where the Switch 2 handheld sends the AV signal to the dock for dual screen usage (as an option). Can also dock for better performance and power. Right now, when docked, the Switch touch screen is useless. This would allow for better text input, better controls for games like Mario Maker and asynchronous play a la Wii U. Maybe allows for ports of mobile only games, maintaining touch screen controls. Could be a fourth way to play: Dock, Handheld, table top, touch.
In terms of power as close to Xbox Series S as possible with perhaps some "smart tech" to make up the difference. Just so it can hang with this gen of Xbox and PS5 - which could see new systems mid-way into Switch 2 life cycle.
We'll see what happens but most importantly are new and great games to play. Edit: Whoa. I didn't realize I wrote so much. The sooner Nintendo announces this thing the better! Can stop speculating
I heard every time a switch 2 prediction comes out, Nintendo pushes the release date back another month
@-wc-
I want that but it won't happen. They wont cannibalize sales for the connected version at 350, for a portable version for 200.
I wish it would but it does not make sense for a company selling truckloads at their current prices (I bought mine used, non-Oled for 250 and it came with a 35 bucks credit). At best, a 250 lite version with smaller screen and non detachable controls, that will require you to buy an additional controller, and with no games included.
@Corvus96 Then lets us prepare for a 2082 for a release!!!
@Edu23XWiiU Switch Evo, there!!
@-wc- It’s called inflation. What happened in the past is irrelevant. The PS5 digital has already gone up in price. There’s a reason the Switch never had a price drop. It’s ok to be wrong, you’ll find out when it launches then you can remember why I was sarcastic towards your ignorant, uneducated self
@Aawill91
Charming.
I think you've lost track of what my comment actually said.
@-wc- Your comment just pointed out prices of previously released consoles. I said the past is irrelevant to today’s inflation. I don’t think, I KNOW you lost track of what we’re actually talking about.
@Aawill91
I'm talking about the comment i made that you decided to chime in on, champ.
My reply to you was a completely reasonable response to your question, which was
"Why would a new console cost the same as or less than the current console?"
and i gave you numerous examples of exactly that. youre welcome.
@LinktotheFuture hoping as well
@-wc- Wow, you STILL somehow don’t get it. You’re as smart as the character in your profile pic.
@maceng that one's good!
@Corvus96 hahahahahaha the curse
