And there you have it, folks — the final trailer for Illumination's Super Mario Bros. Movie has aired, and once again is packed full of references and laced with tons of action.
In today's dedicated Mario Movie Nintendo Direct, Shigeru Miyamoto and CEO of Illumination Chris Meledandri introduced the very last trailer before the movie launches in cinemas on 5th April (depending on where you live, it could be earlier!). All six of the main actors also featured in some typical Hollywood banter.
We got a good look at the Mario Movie's take on the Luma — who is imprisoned along with Luigi — the Spiny (how could Bowser forget their names!?) and the Goombas, plus a whole host of other little references. Mario gets bigger with a mushroom, and Donkey Kong even uses the Fire Flower, a first for the ape.
We also got a shot of Super Mario Odyssey's Tostarena, and a few other Mario series-inspired locations. Have a little look at what you can spot and let us know.
But the real star might just be Rainbow Road, and at the end of the Direct, the film's directors — Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic — said that the team at Illumination had improved the lighting technology just for this course. They also acknowledged the history of Rainbow Road, including its difficulty.
Check out the full, short Direct below, and tell us what you think of the new trailer in the comments!

Luma! 😍😍😍
Movie looks great yet again
A Luma embracing death is the last thing I expected to see in this trailer.
@Ade117 If you think about it, it kinda makes sense! Just looking at all the things they do in galaxy, They seem to be pretty chill about that sort of thing.
I really hope Mamma Luma Rosalina comes pissed in her comet in a post-credits scene. That will make my day.
90% of the movie has now been leaked in the 9 million trailers.😝
Tbh, the first trailer sold me so I have been purposely not watching most of them to avoid spoilers. Can't wait to watch it. 🍿 It will be my first in-theatre movie since late 2019.
"cute thing says something that contrasts with its appearance" is getting a bit old
I realised now that it's weird to throw koopa shells at people.
@somebread THANK YOU I'M GLAD I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE
Still don't know why this movie gets so much hate. For me it looks fantastic, and a great way to celebrate my birthday.
With Minior in Pokemon, Rosalina's Lumas in Smash Bros, and this Luma, it simply seems Nintendo's star-shaped creatures are completely ok with knowing they're temporary.
Really looking forward to the soundtrack. It's Avenegers x Mario, going to be awesome!
You know seeing this animation almost makes me think that if we had better hardware we might actually like our Mario games to look a tad better.
Some takeaways:
Other than that, yeah, film looks interesting.
Fire flower Donkey Kong!
Lava Prison!
Mario working together with Donkey Kong!
Bowser army vs the Mario team like....like the Avengers!!
Rainbow Road!
I WANT to see this MOVIEEEE!
The trailer looks fine still not 100% on voicing casting both Seth Rogen and Chris Pratt man they sound like they ain't trying just doing it for paycheck.
I don't like the sardonic luma but considering this is illumination movie I'm going in as very low expectations since their movies are just average but this one they look like they actually put effort into this one for change.
It’s gonna be great. Waaaahoooo
I think I can get used to seeing the Lumas with mouths. In hindsight, it's odd how the Lumas have always spoken without mouths in the games and only the big, hungry ones have them visible. Here's hoping Blue Luma's mama comes to the rescue! Can't imagine Rosalina NOT appearing in this movie in some form. It's clearly not going to be a major role but hopefully at least a small one. There's rarely been a game in which there's been Lumas without her.
The movie 🍿 keep the popcorn coming! Yippee!!! It's a Chris Pratt time!
@Gamergirl94 Illumination movies are just average!? Are you living under a rock? Minions are now more recognizable than Mickey Mouse amongst the youth. They are mainstream in social media memes and let's not forget that Sing 2 has absolutely slaughtered the all time record for a movie in the Netflix top ten for the most consecutive days. No movie will ever be able to beat it. Illumination has a huge presence in Disneyland's rival theme park Universal Studios with Rides featuring Minions and Secret Life of Pets and they are now the studio behind arguably the greatest video game presence of all time. Super Mario!! Let's a go, this film will be one of the all time greats
This seems so delightfully cheesy. I mean for some people that might be a negative but it feels like this leans into the campiness of the silly concept. Also worth mentioning that the Mario bros website has teased something new. A Mario Bros Plumbing van tour around the US. Worth checking out if either your going to PAX (thanks NL team) or live in a metropolitan area.
Arr that be a fine tale, matey
@Nintendad84
Just because it’s popular with kids doesn’t mean it’s quality. What I can praise illumination for is high quality animation on a budget however often times the plot and jokes fall short. This looks better though and I already have plans to see it opening weekend.
so excited for the movie! chris pratt's mario is mid, seth rogen's dk is ok, and the luma (Lumalee, from the mcdonald's toy) is... something, but i'm sad rosalina isn't appearing with the luma, i was so excited, there were so many "hints", but i guess that's all moot and she's in the end credits
That was sure amazing.
But.
Trust me when I say, I never, ever, expected Shigeru Miyamoto himself to greet the creators of... Teen Titans Go.
@Deemo37 yeah just reread my message and now I feel I came across a bit aggressive. I want to apologize to @gamergirl94. I am just shocked at the dislike for Illumination. I am from the States and I never thought any studio could overthrow Disney and Illumination has done just that. It's an ongoing topic over here.
@Gamergirl94 @agent-7 Seth Rogen’s DK sounds like Wreck-It Ralph.
DK using the fire flower was surprising. Animation is good, I particularly like Bowser's body language. Humour still isn't very funny to me, but it's not terrible. Pratt's Mario voice is alright; I didn't have a problem with it beforehand and I think it may be a bit different now, but still, I think it's not bad. I'd prefer if Rogen's DK sounded a bit more gruff and serious, but it seems that his characterisation is going to be more laid-back and comedic than usual, so it's alright.
All in all, it looks like it'll be at least passable. What I hope is that the characters get some depth to them; nothing too dramatic, but I hope the movie is something more than just a collection of (visually impressive) action sequences and wacky hijinks.
Love it. Is it me though or does it feel like pratts mario voice changes ever so slightly with each trailer
To be frank, I dislike Illumination, but I can’t deny that they know their audience and do a very good job of catering to it. The fact that they produce enormously successful movies isn’t hard to square with the fact that I generally don’t like those movies; not everyone is a grumpy sod and there’s no need for the studio to bend over backwards to appease people like me.
Still, even as a grumpy sod with an aversion to the studio’s output, I have to admit that the attention to detail that has been put into this movie is simply staggering. While I find the humour and voice acting a bit hit-and-miss, it’s undeniably a sumptuous treat for the eyes.
I haven’t decided if I’ll watch it yet, or in what language if I do, but even at this stage it’s fair to say that it’s massively exceeded my expectations. So fair play to Illumination for that.
@DwaynesGames i don't disagree with that, but I don't hate the dk voice, it could be a bit deeper, but it's not a failure.
I still want to see the movie but the things that make me cringe are:
1) Chris Pratt. I like most of what he does but the voice is just not there.
2)Seth Rogen. Not really a fan and he is just being Seth Rogen here which is not good enough for this character.
3) The whole Peach thing is overplayed. The warrior female is great but not new for Peach or basically every thing else recently.
The animation looks great but seems a bit too familiar. I did see more game references in this trailer such a Mario Odyssey. Luigi and Toad seem like they are a good fit voice wise and personality. Jack Black seems to be one of the best in the trailers so far.
I hope the "plot" is better than the trailers indicate. This is a movie after all and since we cannot play it we need a deeper story to follow. That previous statement seems ironic considering Miyamoto once said gameplay was more important than story.
Ok, I have no doubts it will entertain now. I can't wait, time to clear my calendar and call up my nerd bud.
New Donkey Kong county with Mario power ups confirmed
@Nintendad84
I’m from the states and I would never go as far as to think anyone’s overthrown Disney. They’re still basically in charge of the cultural zeitgeist. I also don’t think illumination distaste is particularly new. I don’t think I know many people who like Minions beyond the first two despicable me films. I personally am a huge fan of the original sing but it’s not an opinion shared by everyone. If you like their films though that’s cool and what they do they do fairly well only exception maybe being the most recent minions movie and the second secret life of pets.
So I'm excited with the direction, but a child glorifying death as "sweet relief" is waay too close to glamorizing suicide.
Honestly feel like the bit is not worth the risk.
@Nintendad84 being popular among 6yo does not make a film “good” 🤷🏻♂️
So Mario its going to actually grow in soze when eating a mushroom…. Its going to be weird.
Anyway, Im really exited about this film
will this be in imax?
Looks good. Beautiful. Something to relax your mind to watch.
Is that ... the actual rainbow road shortcut? Next to impossible to really tell, but I think the turns he leaves the track on and the one he end up at are the same direction as when you do that trick in the actual game.
If so, crazy impressed with that level of detail.
@Nintendad84 lol, you are giving them waaaaaaaay too much minor credit there. Disney is still king here in the USA.Yeah that got the rights to Mario, but they are nowhere near Disney/Pixar levels. Heck even Sony's animated Spider-man movie is 10x the quality of every illumination film combined.
Before Sony's film, Disney was the standard that most animators in the biz tried to replicate. Now animation is following the new standard set by Sony.
Illumination has so little impact with their mixed to average films that it's not even a contest. I mean their best achievement is Netflix. Lol.
No plot, no dialog, no jokes except the first bit ... a forced "dark" one.
Is it starting to dawn on people that this is for 8 year olds?
I mean, I have absolutely no problem with that. It should be for 8 year olds. I'll enjoy it even if it is. But ... man, the US marketing seems to be going out of it's way to make sure people are not going to understand that going on. There is going to be some MAJOR freaking out when this is released and the 20-30 year old Nintendo fans realize they got tricked into watching a kid's movie.
Can't wait.
@somebread Yeah it's a pretty tired joke at this point. But I'm definitely not expecting this movie to light it up in the humor department anyway.
The trailer has an unfortunate familiarity inheriting the same cliches "The Lego Movie: 2" established. I would of preferred personally a mature (Not 1993 Mario. Sam Raimi Spiderman equivalence of execution) adaptation of Super Mario Bros.
Looks fun.
Seems they're rescuing Luigi, so they could have called it Super Mario Movie rather than Super Mario Bros, which would also further differentiate it from the 90s movie.
Loving this movie more and more. Hope it turns out well in the end!
@Vexx234 I personally believe you are underestimating the times. Disney (and strictly talking about animated films) is a powerhouse and always will be. Their classics like Lion King and Aladdin and the rest will stand the rest of time. What I am referring to is the present day and time. Disney and their sister company Pixar have released flops like Light-Year and Strange New Worlds. Their quality of film making has gone down hill dramatically to the point where Bob Iger, CEO of Disney has made many public statements on how Disney Animation needs to get back on track. In the meantime Illumination has quietly built up a catalog of movies that have characters the mainstream population enjoy. I mentioned it earlier and it is a fact that amongst today's youth Minions are more recognized than Mickey Mouse. What we are seeing is a transition like that of when Apple became more popular than Microsoft. Nobody thought that was possible back in the day. Similar to streaming services crippling Blockbuster and putting them out of business. So the fact that "Netflix is their biggest accomplishment" is actually a massive deal. That is where today is. We are not living in the past. Today's generation prefers Illumination over Disney and that's monumental. Whether you like their movies or not they are clearly do something right and have staying power for the foreseeable future. Rest assured Illumination and Nintendo worked on this Movie for 6 years. They will not fail us. It will be epic and glorious and cement Illumination's legacy
@HeadPirate I thought the same thing when I first watched the trailer. It has to be a reference to Rainbow Road Mario Kart 64. The jump the separated the men from the boys
I love it, man. Say what you want about casting, I smile the whole time during these previews.
As a film/gaming score enthusiast, I'm pumped for the soundtrack score. Should be another wave of sonic Easter eggs
Has it not been for McDonald's, the Luma reveal would've been a tad more surprising.
I'm glad this isn't like a kiddie movie, but at the same time... this is like the third time we've seen them make a joke about death. I hope they'll have other material that doesn't just revolve around morbid = funny. It's kind of getting old and, in my opinion, isn't very befitting of the Mario universe. Not saying they can't make, like... one or two jokes about death here and there. But they should tone down the dark humor a little bit. It's almost as easy as making a fart joke.
Edit: Actually, there are 4 jokes about death. I forgot about DK saying "Now you die." The other two are Toad saying, "Don't touch that mushroom, you will die!" and "His brother is about to die!" This is only from the footage we've seen so far, which is like maybe five minutes or less.
This is looking to be Mario's redemption act after the 1993 screw up.
Oh man this was pure goodness to my face.^^ That nutty Luma was hilarious.😄 Also, is this first time DK has used a Fire Flower? (as in having actually absorbed the power and all)
I don’t mind Chris Pratt too much, but Seth Rogen DK just sounds off to me lol. Very excited for the movie regardless!
Man... Mario's ground pound has never looked more painful. It doesn't seem to bother him, though.
I might actually attempt to take my kid to his first ever movie theater movie for this. I look forward to everything going horribly wrong!
Y’all who hurt that Luma?
@HeadPirate Wouldn't be surprised if it were intentional, the attention to detail in this movie and its marketing has been insane (so much so that I even wondered if Spike saying "SUBPAR" in his review on the site could be a reference to Mobile Golf, but that could just be a stretch).
Personally while the movie has certainly parts aimed to kids (as it should) I'm confident it will be able to appeal to even adult fans as long as they don't expect too much from those and enjoy what's actually aimed to them like the attention to detail I mentioned... at least they really appeal to me as a big Mario fan!
...has a Luma before this ever made PG-13 suicide/death mentions?
Cause if not, this movie's really taking it up a notch.
@JohnnyMind
Completely agree. Hollywood is pretty good at making movies for kids that parents can also enjoy, so while the focus is going to be 8 year olds, I doubt this is going to be as painful for adults as a Dora The Explorer movie or something like that.
Some of the international marketing seems to be playing into this, targeting the 40 year olds that grew up with the NES as a movie to bring your kids to.
It will only be bad if you're so entitled that you get upset as soon as anything isn't made for you and you alone, and think that any creative decision you disagree with is BETRAYING THE FANS. Thankfully gaming doesn't have any market that thinks like that ...
I can't even begin to tell you how excited my family is for this movie. Mario is a family affair in our house, and we will all be going to see the movie together. I even purchased a couple Mario movie toys that I plan to give to my kids before the movie starts. They will be thrilled.
