I'm going travelling for 4 months at the end of the year and thought instead of taking a UK->wherever I end up I would find a USB charging cable for my 3DS, has anyone tried these?
Do they work? Can they brick it?
The question is because looking at them the output is around 5V and 1/2Amps , but the official power supply is 4.6V - 900mAmps
I haven't got that particular one, but it should be fine. The device will only draw whatever current it needs. The cable itself wont be outputting any current though, so it depends on the charger/plug part. anything less than 900mA and it might charge a bit slower that the official power supply.
I often work offshore and use something similar (but with GBA/DS/3DS etc plugs) as they can be pretty fussy about getting chargers PAT tested. Figured it would be easier getting a USB one to save me having multiple chargers to get tested - this way I can use a single charger for phone/tablet/whatever handheld I decide to take and only have to get one charger tested.
Thought I would just do an update, so it did work for 3 months, but then stopped. At first if you curled the wire at the input to the 3DS it would work, then just stopped, guessing a wire in the main cable broke or something. But for £5 what did I expect really
