If you're anything like us, you probably watched the debut trailer for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond in a slight daze. Not only were we reeling from the sheer quality of games like The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, and Mario & Luigi: Brothership, but we're still astounded that, after seven years of waiting, we finally got our first proper look at Samus' latest adventure.
With that in mind, there may have been some details that might have passed you by; little nuggets of information or easter eggs that could provide some vital context to the new game ahead of its release in 2025. Thankfully, then, the lovely Alex Olney is here to walk us through the new trailer and point out everything that you might have missed.
Now, we're only humans, so if there's anything you might have spotted that we haven't covered here, then please do let us know with a comment in the usual place.

Loved the video. Lots of details I definitely missed so thank you, Alex.
Cor! Love a good vent!
The Switch's swan song. Maybe.
So will this be like before or after Metroid Dread?
@anoyonmus Much before. The Prime series is between 1 and 2. Dread is the latest game in the timeline.
Something I mentioned to Alex earlier was that Samus actually sends her Gunship away after landing. This could mean two things: there may be multiple landing zones in which you can summon your ship, and it also effectively removes the ability to save and recharge while your ship is docked.
Or the footage shown in the trailer could be a more scripted event. In which case, ignore everything I said.
@nessisonett I see
@anoyonmus way before.
The game starts in the year 20x9, the game Super Metroid is in the year 20x7.
So if I don’t dupe out the timeline is:
Metroid 1 / Metroid Zero Mission
Metroid Prime 1, Hunters, 2, 3, Federation Force
Metroid 2: Return of Samus / Samus Returns
Metroid 3: Super Metroid
Metroid Prime 4
Metroid other M
Metroid 4: Fusion
Metroid 5: Dread
Could also be that MP4 is beyond other M, not sure in what galactic year other M takes place?
But yeah, we’re getting a new story arc and hopefully that means more MP games (please).
Is that a new gunship? 🤔
@Olliemar28 it looks like an intro sequence/chapter to me (cinematic, appearance of the potential villain, Samus has all her equipment but only 1 energy tank)
Lmao i know that it’s standard practice to name these types of articles… but also I read them with some kind of an antagonistic voice.
“Here are things you missed in the trailer cuz your dumb brain is a lil pea baby brain. Goo goo gaga Metroid lady big guns”
@Friendly Unless Tanabe sticks with the idea he wanted in 2015…
"Instead of broadening it to more planets I would have one and would focus on the timeline, and being able to change that. That's one interesting idea I have in mind...“
So it could be that Samus travels back and forth between 20X9 and other times, and ends the game in a time other than 20X9 and placing it somewhere else on the timeline when all is said and done. Who knows!
@larryisaman Could be! And would make it very interesting too!
Not sure if Nintendo / Yoshia Sakamoto would allow them to, though. Don’t know if they would like a weird branching timeline as with Zelda.
I think it’s also telling that Sylux is having two Mochtroids next to him (not Metroids, it has only 1 brain instead of 3ish brains) which were the first clone attempts and which were also present in Super Metroid.
@larryisaman
This is likely still in and the main story focus of the game to the extent where the fake metroids are a red herring as we go into the past away from the worn out “Metroids are extinct” plot line.
Having skipped the GC era I really need MP 2 and 3 remakes now. Very keen for this game
High-quality recap. Thanks!
Lots of Talk on reddit that thise aren't metroids but Mochtroids. Pretty interesting theory
Do we think the bits that were supposed to resemble gameplay were actually gameplay? I wondet if the whole thing wasn’t just pre-rendered footage. I don’t really have a problem with just the way it was put together and with a vague release window has me wondering
