Nintendo's new cloud service for backing up saves is a good idea in theory. If the worst happens to your console you can continue your adventures on a new system without breaking a save-data-loss-themed sweat. Backups are even handled automatically, so you needn't worry about remembering to do it yourself all the time.
But there are still a few problems, as discussed in the video above. The primary one being that certain titles including Nintendo's flagship Splatoon 2 don't support this service, presumably to prevent abusing save files to improve your in-game gear. So if you want to have a look at how it all works before diving in yourself, check out the video above to see the process in action.
It's also worth pointing out that at the moment, the backup process doesn't seem to be automated for everyone when it comes to software you already have on your console. Within the ranks of the Nintendo Life team we've had reports of backups happening really slowly, while other staffers have had no automated backups at all. Nintendo may well be limiting how the system works in these early days to avoid clogging things up - but as it stands, you may have to manually upload cloud saves for existing games. Any new game you play will have its data uploaded the moment you close it down.
To update cloud save data for existing titles, all you need to do is open a game which already has save data stored on the console, then exit the game immediately. This will force the upload to occur. However, this only seems to work when your cloud upload is set to 'Pending'. To check the status of each game's save upload, head over to the Settings menu, select Data Management then select Save Data Cloud Backup. From this screen, you can clearly see which games have save data support, which ones have data on your console and which ones have been successfully backed up to the cloud. You'll also see which games are in the 'pending' state.
If you click on one of these pending games, you'll notice that you don't have the option to manually force the upload. Instead, the game waits until you open it, then uploads the save data once it is closed down. However, by pressing X on the save management screen, you can cancel the pending upload and then select a manual one. This means you don't have to open and close every single game to get the data uploaded - a painfully long-winded process.
As we've already noted, this process will most likely become entirely automated for everyone as time goes on, but for the time being, getting that lovely save data into the cloud isn't as streamlined a process as you might assume.

I mean, it doesn't support Splatoon 2 (Nor does Splatoon 2 actively support voice chat, even through the app for that matter)
I just need to know if in-system saves will continue, and if it will be automatic. I mean, I guess cloud saving is optional, but in any case internal saving will always work, right? I guess it should save in the internal memory AND the cloud. Not one place or the other.
Unless for those games where it really matters like Splatoon2.
Looks like I'll never have peace of mind regarding my Splatoon progress...
Wow so what we are saying is:
Online package=
Cloud saves 3/5 (great to have but not available on the games that count)
Voice chat 1/5. (Might as well stand in the yard with two yogurt pots and a piece of string)
Nes games 2/5 (Mostly unwanted addition)
Online play 2/5 (no change still player to player)
Total score 8/20 (4/10) or a Nintendo life review score of 9/10
@Moroboshi876
As I told you before. Of course internal saving will work like before. Cloud saves are totally optional, and you shouldn't even notice it. Stop worrying so much. Your local stored saves will always have precedence over cloud saves.
There are also people who will not sign up for Nintendo Online, so internal saving has to continue to work as before.
The worst thing that can happen to you, is if your Switch get stolen or brakes, and you haven't been online for a while. Then your cloud saves could be old and out of sync. But that's it.
@Moroboshi876 The cloud is just a backup of your local save.
You play, the game save localy, and at some point the console will upload the save file to the cloud (when exactly I'm not sure) but that does not change at all how games are working.
All the games are by default conpatible with NO CHANGE in the game as, in fact it does not change how the game is saving.
This is only the console OS that do it, it is not linked with what the game is going.
Your save are still IN the console, available when being online AND offline. The backup will be done as soon as the console is online.
I have backed up my data and been playing NES games today really cool, I understand that some online games like Splatoon does not support this which is a shame but I agree that this would lead to cheating however these type of games should be automatically backed up on their own servers like how mmorpg's do it, this will stop people cheating you would have to login to their server to receive your character.
Mario tennis is great
I love how @AlexOlney creates a guide by working out how it works while making the guide!
@dres @Godzil Thanks, guys. I was concerned because people around me started getting concerned about potentially losing save data. If it always saves on the system and just uploads it regularly, I'm fine.
@Moroboshi876
If you are so concerned, then you can just switch off "Automatically Backup Save Data" as shown in the video, and do it yourself manually. It gives you the control that your want.
But it really should'n be necessary. It works seamlessly and with out problems at all when "Automatically Backup Save Data" is turned on.
I'm confused with Splatoon 2 because doesn't that game already save to the game's server? I mean that game has always needed to be online so I'm pretty sure this is a moot point. Sure it doesn't use the new Switch Online cloud saves but it already saves to Splatoon 2 dedicated servers.
@Moroboshi876
If you ever used Steam of Gog Galaxy, it work exactly the same, or close to.
As I don't have a second switch it is hard to tell, but basically, I think the backup is mainly done when you exit the game (or when the save file is updated)
@DarthFoxMcCloud: that is somewhat of my undertanding too. I mean, splatnet knows everything about your account, allow you to order thing etc..
@DarthFoxMcCloud I hate to break it to you, but Splatoon 2 doesn't save to a server. If you break or lose your switch you will just have to start over. This was proven by people who tried to play the game on a different switch with the same account having to start over.
Sorry guys for my dumb questions. I never use cloud saving, nor play games on PC. I'm basically a noob in this regard.
What is more important to Splatoon players?
Cloud saves, or preventing cheating?
It would have been nice for Nintendo to let people use cloud saves, but if they do, warn them that cheating is possible.
I backed up saves for 200+ games last night.
At this point, I'm just glad the vast majority are covered. I still want resolution for the 3 games omitted (Pokemom, Splatoon 2, Dark Souls) but, by and large I feel relieved.
@Gedgenator Regardless though, if people go about transferring their Switch data to a new one (because now there's a similar option for Switch as there was for transferring 3DS and Wii U's) then your data carries over. People just need to learn to actually treat their electronics with respect. It's a $300 console, protect it. I always use a thick case for mine and I have a tempered glass screen protector on it. I treat my Switch like I treat my smartphones. Yes that doesn't cover the issue of someone stealing it, but at the same time, common sense needs to play a part of when and when not to take your Switch out to play.
@JaxonH Any idea if Steredenn Binary Stars supports it? Those last two ships were extremely hard to unlock.
splatoon 2 is the only game that doesn't support it of all the games i have..so i'm fine with it. of course it would be better if i could at least back up my single player progress of that game.
@Giygas_95
Cant say for sure, but there's a 99% chance. Basically every game supports it aside from a very select few. Minecraft which stores on the servers. Demos. Fortite which also stores on servers. Splatoon 2 is really the only full exception right now I'm aware of
I can't really watch the Video RIght Now, but I dunno what possible complaints people could have about the Cloud Saves. It's basically perfect.
Software not supporting the Feature is a Flaw in the Software, not the Feature.
You can Activate Cloud Saves for Every Game or Pick and Choose which games you want to use the feature and if the cloud detects a conflict, it disables the Auto Cloud Save Feature until you review the Conflict.
The two best features that came out of this are:
You can now download your games on multiple Switches and if you disable cloud saves on the secondary switches, people can just use your profile to play your games.
OR
You can Set a second Persons console as your Primary Console and Set your Console as their Primary Console and share all your games between two consoles.
and
If you have a Profile on Multiple Switches Already, you can link your Nintendo Account to All of those Profiles and it will convert them into your Single Account and Compile all of your Saves in the Cloud. IF you have saves for the same game on two profiles, it will automatically disable cloud saving for that game until you pick the save you want and delete the other one.
@1UP_MARIO neooo!!!
I have never in my life felt emotionally or physically safer than the moment last night when I was finally able to upload my 64.7MB "Breath of the Wild" save file, representing my investment of 150+ hours in the title, to the cloud. Last night was the first time in the six months or so since I picked up the title that I actually slept, secure in the knowledge that my save data was safe. And so far today, I've felt a sense of inner calm that I haven't felt in I don't know how long. I can't thank Nintendo enough.
@DrJiggle
You jest, but I'm feeling you.
If I've bought the individual online membership for myself but then realised i want to upgrade to the family membership instead,do I only need to pay the difference or is it full price even though I'm just getting adding a couple of profiles? would be a bit of a vfxygbce move if you're made to pay full price for both
@Rohanrocks88 @DrJiggle I'm really not that scared of losing most save data personally...at least not for games Like Zelda and Mario. Yes, a significant amount of time went into those games, but nothing about them was too hard...but then there's games like Hyper Light Drifter and Steredenn Binary Stars. I did the 800 dash challenge in Hyper Light Drifter last night, and I also unlocked the specialist and Red Baron in Steredenn a while back. Those challenges were absolutely brutal. That's the kind of thing I'd like cloud saves for. Dead Cells not having them is really bothering me though. Why? On the surface, that game doesn't have the same excuse as Splatoon, so why?
@Rohanrocks88 @JohnQuixote I actually postponed playing the game for a year because (among other reasons) I wanted to make sure there at least a plan in place to offer cloud saves before I sunk a bunch of time into it.
It'll backup automatically? Like how when a game gets an update and it's supposed to update automatically if you have that selected yet never happens. I have that option turned on yet when I go back to a game I haven't played in awhile I still have to update it. Sorry but I don't trust them to backup my files automatically when they can't update their games that way.
@LinktotheFuture Supposedly not offering cloud saves to prevent cheating. They do know that people have been cheating in Splatoon 2 since that game was released and they didn't have cloud save then and relied on players to report the cheaters. It's just Nintendo trying to be innovative but it doesn't work and they won't admit it or change for the better.
Really wish there was a way to manually back up ever eligible game. Left mine over night and things are still not backed up.
I think what Nintendo doesn't want to say, but is probably the case is "we built Splatoon 2 without cloud saves in mind". I'm sure if they were to make a Splatoon 3 it would support cloud saves without any of this worrying about cheating.
@JediKadabra You can go on Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud Backup, then turn off auto backup (and on again if you want) you will be able to do manual upload.
Oterwise you can open and close a game to trigger the auto backup for that game.
BTW NBA 2K and Dead Cells supports cloud saves despite online info on Nintendo's website saying otherwise.
Seems like the vast majority of games will indeed support cloud saves. Those that won't will either have their own servers (Fortnite, FIFA, Minecraft) or are 1st party games that Nintendo is "protecting from cheaters."
@RennanNT I did do all of them individually, but I wish they was one button to back everything up. Doing 20+ games one at a time got a bit tedious.
@DarthFoxMcCloud
I would agree with you if I didn’t suffer with my Wii U. I couldn’t back up saves and the disc drive just stopped working. I take care of all my stuff and this was the first time a console I owned didn’t work. Nintendo couldn’t transfer my saves from one Wii U to another when I sent it to them and I was stuck with saves on a Wii U that didn’t have a drive that worked. It was also gonna cost me $125 to fix it at a time where switch was on the horizon. Electronics break sometimes regardless of how well you take care of them so for someone scared to loose a save is very legit. I have a friend with 850hrs plus on Splatoon 2 and of his switch goes than he’s screwed.
What if your system is stolen?
So... Dark Souls seems to support cloud backups, and Dead Cells and NBA 2K 18 and 19 definitely support it (can testify first hand).
Seems some of that information that was reported was inaccurate
@brandonbwii
If your system is stolen, you can now (as of today) deactivate the account on their website. And when you get a replacement, sign into your account, download all your games, and download all your saves.
We are now completely protected for lost/stolen Switch.
@Giygas_95
Dead Cells does support cloud saves. I'm not sure where all the false information came from, but I have already backed up my save in Dead Cells. And NBA 2K. Even Dark Souls, which I just preloaded, is not showing the message Splatoon 2 has saying it's not supported. So I can only conclude it also has cloud back ups.
There's some bad information floating around. I can verify Dead Cells definitely supports it though, so you can rest easy about that one
@JaxonH That's very interesting. I wonder why there's been so much information saying Dead Cells doesn't support it?
Unfortunately I just know Animal Crossing isn't going to support it...we can hope anyway.
@Giygas_95
It originally had a message on Nintendo's website saying it wasn't supported, as did all those other games so people concluded they weren't supported. And that was a natural conclusion to make.
But it seems that was just a default message and needed to be updated perhaps?
Dead Cells does support. FIFA and Minecraft no.
Splatoon 2 not having cloud saves while Mario Kart 8 and ARMS do makes zero sense to me. Out of all the games they could have excluded that feature, it just had to be my favorite one.
Nice.
I can understand why Minecraft isn't backed up, possibly for the huge save files. But I agree Nintendo needs to change their policy on Splatoon 2 and Smash Bros Ultimate saves. They have stated publicly that neither will be supported because of the competitive scene, but if my Switch dies and I loose my 200+ hours of Splatoon progress I will be very sad indeed. People are already hacking Splatoon 2 without online saves, and as of now they are the only ones who can backup their Splatoon 2 save data. Nintendo find another way to block hackers.
#WENEEDSPLATOON2SAVEDATA
Thanks for the write up, my time with the service so far has just been me playing these lovely NES games. I'll get to work on the cloud saves now. I'm so glad my Breath of the Wild save data is going to be safe and sound!
@Reverandjames Yeah, I think it will take some time for everything to start backing up automatically. (Just because so many users are backing up right now)
You can however do a manual override or just start the software, save ingame and then exit to the home menu. The save will be backed up then as well.
@LinktotheFuture I'm not sure how that would help. Even if a user chose not to use cloud saves, other players could still use them for cheating.
@Moneyjaypr7 You couldn't just move your save data to a new system using a flash drive or external hard drive?
Thanks for the guide. I was messing around with it last night and seen several pending but didn't see the option to force it. I'll have to cancel the upload and redo it. At least I know now.
@Macalos I understand for Pokemon games because Pokemon hacking and duplication is still a problem and backups make it very easy to abuse, but they should tie in Pokemon bank to the Online service and make that aspect seamless. Any Pokemon player knows your Pokemon are the most important part of the game so losing actual game progress is not a big deal over all.
I have game systems in my house from as long as 20 years ago that still retain my saved data. Even though I went and paid for the Switch online service, I still don't get why this was such a HUGE selling point for so many people.
@TuragaNuva It probably wouldn't help. I guess you could have separate servers for those with cloud saves and those without.
Probably more trouble than it is worth.
@Nico07 When I can back up my 700MB DQB save, then there is no excuse as to why Minecraft couldn't be backed up. That whole cloud save feature feels so lackluster atm.
I have also backed up most of my saves manually, with automatics being triggered strictly per factual software launch/close. But "However, this only seems to work when your cloud upload is set to 'Pending'."? In my experience, the only time this appears is when you attempt a backup while the system is uploading another; all the subsequent backups made in the meantime are simply queued, but otherwise the manual backup button works as intended, too - and it never required me to launch the game first.
Yeah I had to back mine up manually on 2 accounts on 2 systems. Tedious but it only takes a few minutes running down the list, you can queue them all up and move from one to the next, they'll uplaod in order, you don't have to wait for each. It's an annoyance but a trivial one (and some games I had to do manually either way since I had different saves on different machines I had to choose one.)
Also, you do not have to exit the application for the save to sync. I verified periodically with Cat Quest, NES, and Capcom BUMP collection yesterday, it does sync while you play and/or when you put the system in sleep mode, not just on application exit.
@DarthFoxMcCloud Sometimes electronics fry, or overheat or a power surge blows it out, or a sudden downpour starts out of absolutely nowhere, or a flood or earthquake happens, baggage handlers or TSA officials "lose" your equipment. Things happen. Backups are important.
@Reverandjames Yeah that's what the article is mostly about. Just go into the cloud save management, turn off "auto save" then turn it back on. Go down the list into each entry and upload manually.
Save games do automatically upload when you're actually playing the game (if you go run a game and save it will auto-sync shortly after, even though your other games are not syncing.) It's just games not currently being played that aren't syncing automatically during the first startup. After this one time setup it should all be automatic.
This article is wrong. You don't have to have "pending". That only shows when backups are queued up, which can happen if you have a whole bunch in line the first time. Sighhh... It's not that hard.
After the first back up it's completely automatic and does it every time you exit the game. I believe the automatic back up for the first time will actually work but it only works in sleep mode? Idk. I just did it manually so that I knew 100% my saves were safe.
Now it works like a charm where anytime I exit a game, within 5 or 10 seconds the save is backed up to the cloud.
@Reverandjames
I think it works when it's in sleep mode, but I can't confirm, I've only heard from others.
Just manually back them up, and once they're backed up the first time, it works automatically every time you exit a game. Hit + on the game icon and go to Cloud Backups, and Back Up. Or if you have quite a few games to do just go to options into data management and you can get a long list of all your game saves to back up in a row. As soon as you press the back up button you don't have to wait for it to actually back up to back out and start another one. I ran down the list super fast and had like 40 or 50 in my queue by the time I got to the end of the list
Thank goodness! I thought it was just me! Before I manually backed up the saves they were stuck at “Waiting to backup"
@Reverandjames Yeah you don't have to go into the games manually at all, as @JaxonH said you can just go into Settings/Data Management/Cloud saves and flip automatic backups (globally) off, and then right back on again, then just run down the list, go into each one and click backup. You don't have to wait for it to complete, you can just do that right down the list all at once. Most saves are tiny so the whole process takes minutes even over a slow connection.
It's clear it's supposed to automatically back it up. Either it's a bug and not working right in 6.0.0, or, more possibly it only checks "unplayed" games once a week or so and would have uploaded in seven days or so anyway. Still, might as well do it manually and get peace of mind
@JaxonH Also, you don't even have to exit the game, it backs up while it's running despite what NL says. Confirmed it on Cat Quest, Capcom BUMP Collection, and NES app. So much about this works the way it should, and so much information says it doesn't, it's confusing. Who knows the old games might auto upload after a week or two anyway.
@TuragaNuva no the Wii U didn’t support being able to transfer your saves from one Wii U to another. The external hard drives connected only worked with that system. I tried a system transfer from one Wii u to another but it failed. So I sent it all to Nintendo and they couldn’t do anything about it. Basically had all my saves stuck on the Wii U with a broken disc drive
The cloud saves are possibly the best addition to the console:)! I honestly can't understand why it took them so long fo get sorted:p. I manually backupeach of my games, as I onow they have been properly backed up then. It is strange that you do it from the game icon menu rather than in save data management. Nintendo's console(Switch) does seem to have trouble with automated save backups and I think people should understand that Nintendowill have trouble with this as it is their first attempt at this.
@BensonUii Sorry, I know I had asked this before, but as I explained, I started to worry again because people around me didn't think it necessarily would work that way. Now it's clear to me. Thanks.
@NEStalgia
You dont even have to flip automatic backups off. Leave it on. When you manually back up it backs up on the spot.
And ya, it does work great. Once that first backup is made, it's smooth sailing.
This is a HUGE asset to have that we didn't have before. I feel so good now knowing all my saves are safe and secure.
@JaxonH it depends what status it has at first. If the status is "not backed up" you can just go in and hit the backup button. If the status is "waiting to backup" as everything was in my second switch, the backup button is disabled. You have to flip it off and on to clear the "waiting" status so it enables the backup buttons again.
@shani i lost mine after 210 hours when my niece at christmas deleted the whole system on me thankfully at that time that and zelda(which i beat) where the only two games i really needed the save files. sucked badly for splatoon 2
I don’t get the big fuss about these cloud saves. Is the only reason to have them that your system might lost or damaged and you won’t loose your saves? I get that it’s nice to have, but I don’t really care that much. It’s just a game. Even when I was gaming all the time I don’t see my self being that devastated if I lost all my saves at some point. Only Goldeneye, I put my soul into getting all the unlocks on it. But such amazing games don’t exist these days. So what is the big deal?
@Almighty-Koz Yeah I can imagine. Sounds awful. It would probably discourage me from playing those games ever again (that was the case with other games before, at least).
@Lord The games that count LOL...the best games on this device DO have backup saved data w/ no issues. LOL Splatoon 2 is only 1 little game popular as it is, theres much better games on this device (I can name a dozen) from Hollow Knight to BOTW to Dead Cells to Octopath Traveler (etc, etc) - all have saved data, sucks that Splatoon 2 doesnt, we can be in agreement there...but for me...not so much. I have backups of all my games now..peace of mind (at the very least) its what Im ponying up $20 for basically.
@JaxonH i've had some issues just now (just today) went to load Dead Cells and it had a screen pop up ("Auto backup failed to launch, please try again later if this persists contact Nintendo Support") ...weird...I can still play game and it has back-up ON the cloud, but I have automatic (set to ON) for all my games. So and Dead Cells is my recently played (most recent) title (its a digital obviously)...I launch it, and usually after I am done and close the software, I can press the + and it shows "Not backed up....backing up.......0%....100%, COMPLETE, Backed Up (once again) so it basically back-ups after-every-play-session. But this last launch (I keep my system in Sleep, in handheld mode) I brought it out of sleep, went to click Dead Cells, and I get that error message, saying it failed to back-up (the last time) so its having errors (just that game)....weird. I am looking online to see if ppl (already in just a few days have had any errors/issues w/ the service, I have the 7 day free trial (its day 2 of the trial) it doesn't end till 9/29/2018 - right now is 9/22/2018. So...Hopefully this dead cells-error (to auto-backup) which has failed 3x times now...ill try again later like it says I guess...
@Itzsfo0
I just tried it 5 seconds ago.
Backed up perfectly
Although when I tried to quit the game it hung, and wouldnt close, and I got an error. But the backup worked fine.
