$50 lol heck no. You can get it now on the DS - as god intended you to play - for 20 bones or less.
I really like this, will deffo pick it up
Should just be on NSO.
Or it should be a collection of games.
Rather underwhelming release. The original on GBA was already a severely lacking "remake" of the GB classic, with far less content to boot.
But Nintendo is looking to pad out the final days of the Switch.
@Browny And we still don’t have Donkey Kong 94 on NSO. It was announced as a future title, right?
@DwaynesGames
Heck, I thought it was on NSO already. Huh.
Not sure if it was announced for the service or not, to be honest. I haven't played the game since it was on the 3DS VC more than a decade ago.
@Cashews Isn't there just a GBA version? I have it on my 3DS via 3DS ambassador.
This remake kinda deconfirms the GBA version for NSO yes? Like the Advanced Wars 1 & 2 with the Reboot Camp remake released. That's the only caveat I find with these remakes, Nintendo would rather sell the remakes for full retail price or close than offer the original on their subscription service.
Is this will be full game in cartridge?
I don't want another code in box again like Wii U version.
$50 is a hard pass, for the same reason I do not find Advance Wars Re-boot worth the money.
1) I have the original cartridges, and this new version doesn't do enough different.
2) GBA emulation is easy-peasy.
Who asked for this remake? I sure didn't...
I'm really looking forward to playing this as I love DK '94 an indescribable amount and never really gave this semi-sequel a chance as I wasn't keen on the pre-rendered look on the low resolution (and horizontally cropped considering how zoomed in they were) screen.
For others who don't mind the look of the original, or even who enjoy it or are nostalgic for it, I'm not convinced this is a $50 game, especially as @Browny mentions its underwhelming in size/content compared to the GameBoy title?
Also, yeah I agree the cover art is really weak. The hand drawn GBA cover was much nicer and the DK '94 art is possibly my favourite Mario cover art ever... up there with Super Mario Land.
@SwagaliciousJohnson I did. I like this game.
At that price, no thanks.
@Anti-Matter This is a cartridge, the download code only games for Switch clearly state so on the box art.
Also, that Wii U game was always download only except Japan, and then released as a "code in a box" to desperately try and scrape up a little money while the Wii U was (sadly) floundering. This game bares almost no resemblance to the Wii U title, the series changed dramatically over time to become a completely different style of game. This game was always intended as a full price release for GBA rather than a small budget download only title.
@EaglyBird yeah i don't know who is doing the style of Mario these days.... but its not as great as it used to be.
Nintendo cash-grab special
Have already preordered it discounted on the site of my trusty retailer here in Italy as I loved what I've played of the original (never finished it so this will be my chance to do so)!
@Porky Not necessarily, might eventually come to NSO just like Link's Awakening did despite the Switch remake, but certainly not in the immediate future.
@samuelvictor I'd say this game is actually longer than Donkey Kong '94 considering that the game is comprised of 6 worlds with 6 levels each plus Mini Mario and Boss ones, but after the final boss you unlock as many plus worlds with almost as many levels (only the Mini Mario ones are missing) and you can also unlock extra expert levels by getting stars - i.e. high scores - in regular levels.
I’m pretty excited for this. Nice way to give us something to play before Switch2. I will end up getting it, though I feel $40 would’ve been a better price for this.
If theirs no preorder bonus of an actual Mini Mario toy then meh.
@JohnnyMind Oh, that's cool to know, thanks! I love it when games do that kind of thing - its something I'm implementing in my Hazel game to give extra replay value. 😀
PS nice to see you again mate! I've been away from social media for a few months for a mental health break.
@DwaynesGames THIS!
I thought, cool the new NSO games we're getting.
My mouth dropped when I realized it was a full priced new release!
Amazing game, but wow that's a lot for an old gba game!
@samuelvictor I've seen the posts where you mentioned that, glad to see you back here on Nintendo Life!
It may not be full priced ...but it is still pricey.
This is a remake of a GBA game, not a full console release. It should really be a small download title for like €20 maybe, like most of the other Mario vs. DK titles.
I assumed this would be digital-only priced at $20. That's the sort of game this looks like.
@Browny I fully agree that this game is highly over-priced.
However, your comment that this has less content than DK '94 is objectively untrue. DK '94 I can beat 100% in about 2.5 hours. Meanwhile, completing Mario vs. Donkey Kong 100% took me probably 20-30 hours. It's has far larger levels, far MORE levels, and WAY more challenging levels.
You might think you beat the game after the initial 6 worlds, but then there are 6 plus worlds with a totally new game style, then a bunch of expert levels that really push your skills to the limit. It's a meaty game that blows DK '94 out of the water.
€50! not a hope... €20 be more suitable
@JohnnyMind Thank you 😀
Does anyone else feel like this game feels, like super low effort? Even for a Mario Vs. Donkey Kong game. Cool to see this game back though, it's really good
I'm confused as to who this is supposed to appeal to.
@Porky Same! I would rather see value added to the subscription service.
It may be difficult to do, but I would rather see a collection of the DS games adapted foe Switch.
Really cool to see the original MvsDK remade but I feel the GBA title still holds up even today.
I love Mario vs Donkey Kong....but is this a 1-1 remake with a few extra features? If so, $50 is a little out of my price range.
Now if it was $50 and included a Mini-Mario amiibo, that'd be a different story.
Anything that kinda looks like DK94 is a win in my book! Never played the original, let's a go!
I hope they release the original on GB NSO for the occasion
@Cashews It's a gba game, not a ds game. The sequels were ds and 3ds, and they are inferior in every way.
I don't blame you, @N0SEGaming as a matter of fact I am happy for you, but I'd rather had Wind Waker HD/Twilight Princess HD.
Nintendo has done Donkey Kong dirty this generation same with Star Fox and F-Zero
What the hell it’s a naff game with a naff price tag….surely this can’t sell!
I like the game but not at that price. Will stick with the GBA version.
I have the GBA version on my Wii U and played through it this year so easy skip for me
A lot of the comments I'm seeing about this game are strong evidence that Nintendo was really stupid to change this series into a Lemmings clone without changing the title. So many people seem to think this is the same level of quality as the sequels when in reality it's so much better.
If this game had a mode like stage maker like either Mario Maker 2 or being able to create dungeons like in the Link's Awakening remake, then it would probably be worth the price. But Nintendo is getting way too comfortable making these minimalistic fully priced remakes for games that were on a 20 year old handheld that you could probably buy for cheap nowadays.
I'm good. I still think the first on GB was the best. $50 is crazy to me, but I did buy the RDR port. It's obviously subjective. Happy for those who are happy with it!
One of Nintendo's most boring franchises without a doubt.
@EaglyBird They would have had to put more effort in the box art than the game itself if you want it to look any better.
@sketchturner
Actually didn't know there was that much content to the release. Only sampled the game back during its initial release about two decades ago, and I cannot definitively say I completed it (likely didn't, given that I didn't remember the extra levels being a thing).
@DwaynesGames Nope
Sadly all the physical game stores in my area closed down. We had a retro store but they carried new games as well. It shut down 5 years ago. Then we had gamestop since like 2007 but it shut down. Sadly I had to pre order it from amazon but I just hopes it comes in the mail on time.
When the Switch 2 comes out I am worried how im gonna get a system on release. I legit might have to book a hotel or something in a city 2 hours away from me and wait outside a best buy at 6a.m lol
@Anti-Matter yes, it's a cartridge in a box.
